For Allergic Reactions "I've used this and given it to my children for over 20 years. My teenage son would take 1 before going to bed so he could sleep without allergic reactions. I've used it for unknown allergies like bee stings and sunless tanner. Works great, and so does the topical cream. No adverse effects with us."

For Allergic Reactions "I took over-the-counter Benadryl for some minor reason, and hours later I started itching all over my body. The itch was deeply intense, from my scalp to my feet - a full body reaction. I started getting visible large hives, and my throat and face were swelling. I went to the ER, and they said it was impossible that I was allergic to Benadryl. The ER doctor was certain I was having a reaction to the pink dye in the pill. He injected me with clear liquid Benadryl to prove this to me. I immediately had a second reaction. They had to treat me with alternative medications; an injection in my bottom, prednisone to help with breathing, and another green pill of some sort to take home with me. I am allergic to Benadryl."

For Allergic Reactions "Allergy reaction to nuts. Started feeling swelling around mouth, throat... very scary, feel like I am stopping to breathe. This instant relief. Give it 10-15 minutes till it kicks in. WORKS WONDERS. BUT... you might need a good snooze after a good dose..."

For Allergic Rhinitis "I have a lot of allergies. About a year ago, I began taking Benadryl at night to help me sleep. It also helped a lot with the allergies. I only take it at night because of the drowsiness. Recently, my stomach was upset for a month, and I noticed they've begun putting calcium in it! This is so upsetting! Calcium stimulates stomach acid, and people with allergies are sensitive to acid. This has been documented in the allergy journal. I would have thought a pharma company would know better than this! I wish the two corp drugstores in my area had a better selection of drowsy antihistamines. They mostly have only Benadryl. CVS has chlorphen, but it has lactose in it. :( For now, I'm making do with a Walgreens combo that includes chlorphen."

For Allergic Rhinitis "I absolutely love Benadryl. It works fast when I need it and relieves the symptoms enough to make me feel comfortable. It does make me sleepy, so I take it at night. I do take it during the day occasionally when I know I don't have to drive anywhere."

For Urticaria "I would get so worked up with hives before an exam with my gynecologist that I would have to cancel. One day I took a Benadryl (they usually come in 25 mg or 50 mg tablets, or in packs of two 25 mg tablets)-just 25 mg before my appointment, and it really took the edge off. I had no hives and was much more relaxed. I buy the generic brand at the Dollar Store. This is used in our house for insomnia, allergic reactions, stuffy noses, and what I had previously mentioned. It is not habit-forming, and at such low doses, it's easy to control. Just make sure you stay hydrated! One word of caution to parents with young kids or teens-there have been many cases of suicide attempts and to trip out on."

For Allergic Rhinitis "Works better than most prescription drugs for allergies and chronic sinusitis (I've had sinus surgery 4 times due to this), whose side effects are health threatening. I will only take at night due to the drowsiness, this drowsiness can turn into nervousness if I don't fall asleep and keeps me up all night. I do have drowsy days often with naps from sitting and just passing out. I find that if I continue taking it every night, about the fourth night, I begin to have vivid and horrible nightmares. I also get drenching night sweats - the two are not always together, one night I may have one or the other. I take one (1) tablet."

For Allergic Reactions "Works well and is one of my go-to antihistamines. However, it is very sedating and is also not long-lasting. It would work great for someone with insomnia as a milder sleep aid, but for my use, I would say that it works but makes you sedated."

For Allergic Rhinitis "Dampens down allergy symptoms fast when nothing else available outside of a doctor's office or hospital will. Yes, it puts me right to sleep, so it's not my first choice for everyday seasonal allergy control, but this is the one to keep in the first aid kit for unexpected allergen encounters."

"Three months ago, I began using Benadryl to help my sleep and stomach issues. Its effectiveness has been the best out of any other medication I've been prescribed. However, I am scared about its long-term use. To reduce this concern, I take a 5 ml dose for three consecutive nights and then have a night off. I hope I can maintain this routine until I have fully recovered, and my fears prove to be unfounded. I am grateful for each day that it continues to work."

For Allergic Rhinitis "Good antihistamine. Can cause drowsiness, but it works quickly and shrinks nasal swelling better than some of the other choices. I take a newer antihistamine during the day, but this helps a ton at night when the other wears off and the pollen is still bad."

For Allergic Reactions "Benadryl is the gold standard for allergies, anxiolysis, and sleep aid. It works like a charm! It is not particularly fast-acting, though. I usually take a half a tablet (12.5 mg) at a time, and it can take up to an hour to really kick in."

"I have had chronic low back and hip area pain for years. Just recently, some swelling was noted on MRIs in that region. NSAIDs (ibuprofen, naproxen...) are supposed to reduce swelling but have never helped me at all. But Benadryl helps reduce my pain. I think because it actually does reduce swelling. It also calms the anxiety that comes with pain. It settles my stomach, too, and if I am on a long bus ride, taken beforehand it prevents motion sickness. I take only 1/4 or 1/2 tablet at a time, usually only once a day when needed. Benadryl really is a wonder drug, this first-gen H1 antihistamine."

For Allergic Reactions "I had a headache attack in June of 2023 and a seizure and had to be put in the hospital. They gave me Ativan, Benadryl, and IV Tylenol as a headache cocktail and it worked like a dream! After 5 days in the hospital, I was all better after that nasty headache."

"I get itchy skin often, and this seems to relieve it. It makes you calmer and sleepy as well, which is good, but it does cause anxiety sometimes, especially after waking up. It can be slightly addictive too. Other than that, it's been around for years and is cheap and works pretty well for a variety of allergy issues."

For Allergic Rhinitis "I have been up since 12 PM with hay fever, took Benadryl, then couldn't stop sneezing due to hay fever, nasal passages swollen, and can't breathe. It doesn't make me sleepy at all, and my nose is still stuffy. It is now 3 AM, I'm still up suffering with hay fever and just took another Benadryl. SMH, not working fast enough for me, plus I suffer from hay fever really, really bad."

For Urticaria "I was diagnosed with chronic idiopathic angioedema in 2005. I was 8 months pregnant and woke up one morning, and my face was unrecognizable. I called my doctor, and they said, 'Oh, it's probably just pregnancy swelling.' I am an only child, so I didn't know about facial swells. My husband came home and said, 'This is NO pregnancy swelling.' This was in 2003. It continued weekly, so we took pictures and took them to my ob-gyn. He had been practicing medicine for over 30 years and had never seen anything like it. I saw numerous doctors and was finally diagnosed. I was in the hospital, and I swelled up. I was given too much Benadryl. It took my breath away, and I couldn't speak. Another nurse came in and yelled at the nurse. It has to be given slowly, or it's very dangerous."

For Nausea/Vomiting "It's a miracle worker with benzodiazepines, take 50 mg with Xanax, etc. If you're like me with a decent tolerance or don't seem to get what you wanted from it. Benadryl amps the effect and takes away more anxiety. Love it!"

For Nausea/Vomiting "I used to take this med when I was younger. I had no side effects. Now, as an adult, a child's dose gives me nightmares and hallucinations. I do have Hashimoto's and take levothyroxine, not sure if that's the reason in the mix. Then again, my friend who is older than me and takes levo for Hashimoto's has no side effects from Benadryl."

For Allergic Reactions "I had been to the doctor for hives from an insect bite, and they told me to use Benadryl cream and medicine, but it didn't help. I used calamine lotion and everything else I could think of, even Cortisone 10 extra strength, it didn't help. I went to the doctor for the 2nd time, and they told me to use the same thing, no help at all. I was itching so badly, the hives were spreading, even the itching and burning sensations to my arm, ankles, burning feeling in my fingers, and hives spreading to my chest. I couldn't help but scratch them sometimes, that probably caused them to spread, but I couldn't help it. I went to see another doctor for the 3rd time, and he prescribed Prednisone and Hydroxyzine, and this is my 2nd day taking them, and I see a great difference. My arms and everything are clearing up, and I finally could rest. I recommend Prednisone. I give it a 10."

"I have tried hydroxyzine in the past for panic and anxiety, and it did not work for me. In fact, it always made my anxiety worse. Benadryl, on the other hand, works amazingly well. Now, it's as needed and should not be taken every day, but as a temporary panic medication, it worked very well for me."
