"Use caution ***** I started taking this form of the "mini pill" in September 2016. Initially I had no adverse reactions to it but, the side effects of NON STOP BLEEDING hit me like a Mack truck. For the past two months I have been experiencing what's known as "breakthrough bleeding" almost everyday. The kicker is I stopped taking it over a month ago!! Seek other forms of contraception-this one is really scary (and only 80% effective)."

"I was on this medication for just under two months for fibroids. Within a few weeks I noticed my anxiety, which is usually very manageable on lexapro, started to creep up. I didn’t think much of it nor even connect it to this new medication. Near the end of my second month on norethindrone my anxiety skyrocketed and became debilitating. I started googling whether lexapro could suddenly stop working, which it can, but then I remembered my birth control switch two months earlier and started googling side effects of the mini pill. So many women described anxiety and depression. At this point my anxiety was so bad (racing and irrational thoughts) I couldn’t sleep, lost my appetite, and was crying almost all day. I stopped the pill two days ago and am already feeling worlds different. If you are someone who has pre-existing anxiety, I would pay close attention when you start this medication. One other side effect I noticed was my hair and skin became greasier. Not horribly, but I did notice."

Lyza (norethindrone) "So I was given Lyza because of my migraines. Long story short as soon as i started taking it I've had problems. My migraines seem even worse. It made me really moody & depressed. Not to mention never having a break from my period if I'm lucky I get 5 days off at the most other than that I'm always on my period. I definitely would not recommend!"

"I'm so glad I stumbled onto this site and comments. This pill has been a nightmare. I bleed HEAVY constantly for weeks at a time. I'm now severely anemic and am going through iron (iv) infusions. YES like another commenter I have my period for weeks, last month I was on my period 3 weeks. I'm so tired and frustrated that I'm 38 and considering a hysterectomy. I started this pill 9/28/16. Every time I called about the heavy long periods I was told it takes 2 to 3 months for my body to adjust its now been 6 months and like I said I was on my period 3 weeks last month and just had my 1st of 5 iron infusion treatments. Nightmare.. AVOID THIS PILL :("

Heather (norethindrone) "I wanted to use this pill Heather to try and minimize my period, all it did was make me feel extremely nauseated and couldn't poop ever to where my stomach was cramping. It gave me the most awful acne I’ve ever had, and it took my period completely away, which wasn’t what I wanted. ebing sexually active and not having a period is really awful for not knowing if you could be pregnant or not"

"I was put on this pill 3 months ago due to heavy bleeding - I had been bleeding since February. While on this pill I still had heavy bleeding with clots. I stuck it out hoping it would work. Haven’t taken the medicine for 7 days now and I'm still bleeding."

"I have struggled with abnormal uterine bleeding for quite sometime. Along with that came terrible mood swings that became debilitating. I tried several different combo pills but it was too much for me; I felt too many negative side effects from it. So I wanted to try the “progesterone only” pill and I am so glad I did. It took about into the 3rd week for the bleeding to completely stop but I’m glad I stuck patient with it! The only side effects I get from it is mild stomach upset/nausea or a slight headache after taking it which subsides quickly. I feel so much better! My moods have levelled out, my senses and drive are stronger. It’s been a great game changer for me! :)"

Sharobel (norethindrone) "I've been on this medication for about 3 months now, and I haven't have a period at all. I had abnormal bleeding for an entire month, and then it stopped completely. As a person who relies on their period heavily as a reminder that they aren't pregnant, I don't like this medication. The cramps while the bleeding occurred were horrible. I will be changing my birth control medication back to high hormones, despite my migraines."

Errin (norethindrone) "Prescribed because fibroids and polyps (and probably pre-menopause) made period flow unbearable. CONS: -If I don't take the pill at exactly the same time every day, have 4 days of medium flow between cycles. Happened 3 times. Can't even be 20 min late or early. Felt like 3 periods in one month (every other week). -Cramps much worse than before. Still happen between cycles too. Often need Tylenol mid-sleep. -Clots huge unless I preemptively take Advil every few hours. -Breasts sensitive to point of aching sometimes. -Period can be a week earlier or later than the previous one, so planning is impossible PROS: -Actual period flow is slightly more manageable than before. -Spotting between cycles much less (sometimes not at all) unless I screw up my dose time. SUMMARY: If I take pill on time with 100% accuracy, period is slightly better. But my quality of life feels like it has declined due to the stress the side effects have added to it."

Ortho Micronor (norethindrone) "The first year was fine but now I'm constantly bleeding have constant spots on my face which I've never had. I have also gained a lot of weight inexplicably which just makes me constantly think it's baby weight which is not good at all! Better than the IUD by a long shot though"

"I bled for 4 weeks straight. The bleeding and blood clots got so heavy I had to wear Depends. I really wish my Dr had listened to my previous experiences. The day after I discontinued use the bleeding slowed and stopped."

Errin (norethindrone) "My initial experience was terrible because I would not stop bleeding and after I could not bare it anymore I went to the doctor in tears and frustration and she switched me to Slynd which is a bit of a higher mg and the bleeding stopped in about a week. Seems to be going better with the higher dosage of the pregestin. Definitely check out Slynd if the bleeding is too persistent on Errin."

Heather (norethindrone) "I've been on birth control pills for over a year now for heavy periods. My pharmacy only had Heather brand of norethindrone in stock recently, so I received a 90 day supply. And OMGoodness the next 90 days were horrible. I had horrible cramping for days before and during my period, and literally just felt sick from the pain. Once my 90 days was coming to an end, I went to my pharmacy and demanded they order another brand. I will NEVER use Heather again."

"So glad I found this thread. I was rushed to hospital after fainting on the street two weeks ago. My last two periods have been like a flood so my hemoglobins dropped ALOT. I got a blood transfusion and was prescribed norethindrone. But I've been on my period for two weeks now, even with fibroids after 10 days or so it would've ended by now. I think this pill is the cause of the prolonged bleeding. I'll check with my gyno visit this Wed. But like some of you mentioned I'm scared of having a IUD and I just hate bc pills in general there are too many side effects. I also had a myomectomy 2 yrs ago, and still having the same issues. I'm considering Lupron or embolization at this point. I want kids, but at this rate my health is more important."

"I used this drug after surgery because of uncontrolled bleeding. I was going thru a super tampon every 1 or 2 hours for 2.5 days. After taking 10mg of norethindrone, my bleeding subsided in 8 hours and went back to a 'normal' period and has since completely stopped. If you take norethindrone long term, you may have breakthrough bleeding almost constantly....I had this happen after 3 months of 10mg x day (as endo treatment), it cleared up about 2 weeks after I went off of the norethindrone and back on regular birth control. If you are having heavy or uncontrolled bleeding, I recommend giving norethindrone a try for, it's supposed to work within 24 to 48 hours for heavy bleeding."

Jolivette (norethindrone) "I had a non-stop period 3 months ago. The Doctor prescribed Jolivette to let my period stop but after 6 days my bleeding doesn't stop at all. It's annoying because you can feel the gushing of blood. Until I asked my Doctor to switch it into another pill."

Camila (norethindrone) "I tried to take Camia for three months in order to stop very painful periods with heavy bleeding. I had one normal period, and then I had a period EVERY OTHER WEEK for two months. The severity of my periods had not changed at all, so I was essentially bedridden every other week with bad cramps and heavy bleeding. I was too exhausted to do anything on the 'off' weeks. I hoped this birth control would work for me because I can't take estrogen birth control in case it would raise my intracranial pressure. In fact I do think that taking Camila still raised my pressure anyways, but not a significant amount. It also may have been exacerbating the ovarian cysts and polyp that I have, which are probably causing my painful periods in the first place! Ultimately the risk of side effects on top of the excessive bleeding was not worth it and I stopped taking this medication."

Errin (norethindrone) "I began taking Errin for a month and I've had the worst experience ever with this birth control method. I have gained 20 pounds since taking it. There was spotting between my periods. I had extreme mood swings that were crazy ups and downs. I experienced headache anxiety and increased blood pressure. I don't recommend this b.c. to any women who is thinking of trying progestin only pill. Yes it is the mini pill but I had a horrible experience. I will just deal with my adenomyosis and heavy periods w/o birth control. Never again!"

Errin (norethindrone) "I started taking this back in July 2019 I had been taking the combination pill form for 6 years and they switched me to this because I have Factor 5(a clotting disorder). I liked it at first no complaints but now I’m having periods every two weeks and then they stopped. And I got a cold a few days ago and woke up today to heavy bleeding. I’m not sure what to do because I was under the impression I wouldn’t have a period, maybe just some spotting but not heavy like this. I feel awful it has completely drained me."

Errin (norethindrone) "Terrible. I had taken a combo pill years before and had no issues. This gave me heads aches, tender breasts, and irregular periods. I had two periods a week and half apart then one the lasted 10 days. I stuck it out to see if it would regulate things but it didn’t. Never again. Switching back to a low dose combo pill."

Lyza (norethindrone) "I have been on the Lyza mini-pill for a year and a half now. If you are like me and are bleeding way more often than your not DO NOT listen to your doctor. I bleed for 3-5 weeks and then I will get a week (maybe 2) if I'm lucky of no bleeding. I am constantly bloated and severely crampy. All I can do is lay with a heating pad to get some relief. And when I say bleeding....I mean HEAVY from start to finish. I use at least 3 super size tampons a day because I bleed through them. My doctor however says its "normal". Idk what the hell their definition of normal is but this is NOT it!"

"I have been on this medication for about a year now to treat extremely heavy bleeding during my periods. Within the first month of taking it, it helped a LOT to a point. While I wasn't having nearly as much bleeding, it lasted for 3 weeks straight. In the beginning I was taking 2 x 5mg tablets a day, and was eventually dropped to 1 a day. After the change, I would go about every other month before I started having a period. Until recently, I went 5 full months without having anything, and now am on a 3 week stretch yet again. In those 5 months, there has been an increase in discharge, and my face has broken out HORRIBLY right around the time I normally would have a period."

Ortho Micronor (norethindrone) "I started taking this pill about six weeks ago. The first couple of weeks I had abit of bleeding but I think that was partly my fault, not taking it at exactly the same time each day but since I have and all as been well. My boobs seem quite sensitive but larger, so cannot complain. All in all I cannot fault it, no spots, headaches or noticeable weight gain as yet."
