Clomipramine for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I have been taking Anafranil 100mg for a year now and it has changed my life. I have battled with OCD, severe anxiety, panic disorders, and intrusive thoughts since I was young. While trying different drugs, finally at the age of 40, one drug works for me and this is it. I still have the 'thoughts' but instead of obsessing over them, they pass by like moving cars. The side effects are bothersome: dealing with constipation, bloating, sweating, insomnia, twitches. I don't believe I can ever function without this medication and instead maybe lower my dosage to see if it reduces the side effects."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I started clomipramine due to a sudden rise in panic attacks and severe OCD. (which was super strange because I have only had a couple panic attacks my entire life.) My doctor said this might help my symptoms, and I could not be any happier. It has taken away my OCD symptoms about 90%. This is insane. I can't believe I am even typing this. I have had severe, awful OCD since my childhood, and now all of my intrusive thoughts are gone. If I do have them, they are fleeting and aren't debilitating like they used to be. At the beginning, I had some side effects like extreme dizziness and lack of appetite, but now I feel better and they are lessening. I am confident that this medication saved my life."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I don't even know where to start. This medication was the breakthrough for me. I had tried so many medications over a year and a half before my doctor put me on this. I was skeptical at first, started off on a small dose, the nausea and headaches were not too terrible. The first few weeks my obsessions got worse, but once I was at 100mg, I felt a small breakthrough and a small ease of my symptoms. I had even greater results at 150mg. I'm now at 200mg, working my way up to 300mg, but honestly, this is the best I have felt in years, and for the first time, I feel like I can enjoy my life and breathe without the constant obsessions and compulsions. I'm not saying this will work for you, but do not give up. I thought I was hopeless and medications would never work for me until I finally got on this. There is light at the end of the tunnel, and you deserve to have this same feeling!"

Clomipramine for Depression "Was on Effexor, Seroquel, and Prothiaden but could not shift the constant thoughts of killing myself. Driving became a nightmare, just leaving the house was impossible as my thoughts kept telling me to walk in front of a bus, etc., etc. Anafranil literally saved my life and gave me back the wish to live. Most effective drug I have ever used, and gradual withdrawal worked really well. Thoughts not completely gone but no pressure anymore, they just drive on by."

Clomipramine for Panic Disorder "I was suffering panic attacks, anxiety, depression, and irritable bowel syndrome. I started on half of a 75 mg for two weeks and then a full tablet. The side effects were a bit of a challenge some days, but the upside was I had good days very early into taking. I started them four weeks ago and panic attacks are gone, minimal anxiety now, depression lifted considerably, also no more IBS. One thing that no tablet cannot do is change how you think. I am very, very blessed!"

For Depression "I've tried many SSRIs and SNRIs with little help, with augmentations of all sorts. Clomipramine is the only drug that has worked well so far for my depression. I did a combo of rTMS and clomipramine at 100 mg. Now, I am finally pulling free from the grips of severe clinical depression. Thank you, clomipramine!"

For Panic Disorder "Had life debilitating panic attacks after my mum died. I couldn’t work or socialize and felt like I was dying too, it was so awful. After a couple of weeks on this drug, I started to get my life back, and now, 4 months in, I feel so good. Only wish I’d been prescribed this years ago, as OCD has affected me all my life. Side effects? A few (tiredness, hot sweats, and a dry mouth - but only in the first few weeks, now all gone). Honestly, this drug has been a lifesaver."

For Panic Disorder "Have suffered from a lot of anxiety, panic, and depression, as well as a few unwanted thoughts and feelings for 6 years...!! Tried all SSRIs, SNRIs, anti-psychotics, and two TCAs (imipramine, amitriptyline), none of them can bring a satisfying response!! But clomipramine did!! Difference of day and night just inside 7 days!! No major side effects, only minor ones in the starting days!! Dose: 50 mg at night/daily!!"

For Premature Ejaculation "Out of nowhere, I started having premature ejaculation problems, so a doctor prescribed Anafranil. The drug definitely worked, and after I stopped taking it after a couple of months, my problems were gone. The drug did make me feel pretty queasy and out of it (I threw up once), but it was as if my sex life was rebooted and my body trained to orgasm later. I recommend, but don't drive or do anything important while on the drug."

Clomipramine for Irritable Bowel Syndrome "Before taking Anafranil, I had severe episodes of Irritable Bowel Syndrome diarrhea. I had anxiety which gave me diarrhea, and that fear of diarrhea gave me anxiety. It was a vicious circle. I even had an 'accident'. I was prescribed Anafranil (75mg, then I lowered the dose to 50mg) and it was definitely a life-saver. No more anxiety and no more diarrhea. I could eat everything I wanted. I was able to go on vacation, have a girlfriend, go to the mall, go to parties, have a normal teenage life, and not wonder every time if there is a bathroom near. For sure, there are some typical tricyclic antidepressant side effects, but I prefer to have them than having anxiety and diarrhea. You have to make a choice and find the right dosage for you."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "Anafranil or Clomipramine has completely changed my life. I have been taking it for over 25 years (I'm 51) and wish I started it 25 years sooner! It started to ease my OCD symptoms almost immediately. I was first given several SSRIs and could not take the side effects - they made my OCD much worse. Don't settle for the medication of the month or what your doc has seen work in the past. Everyone's brain chemistry is different, and just because Clomipramine is old does not mean it's ineffective. I also have adult ADD. My meds for that have not proven to cause any problems with the Clomipramine. Best wishes to all sufferers."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I have been on this medication a short time. Apart from drowsiness which I'm still adjusting to, I am finding it really helpful. After being on many other medications over the years, I am finding that Clomipramine mixed with my others has finally reduced the pit of anxiety plus the intrusive and obsessive thoughts that I tend to have continually. For the first time I feel like I can overcome the anxiety plus not be troubled by thoughts that I cannot control. I was SO tired of people just telling me I needed to control my thoughts and could overcome them if I wanted. Hey, I'm in my 50s and hasn't been possible up until now! Anyway, so far so good. The drowsiness is a bit troublesome, but to be honest, nowhere near as troublesome as problems."

For Depression "This is a VERY effective Rx; it totally cured my depression and repetitive thinking, but is the polar opposite of imipramine and amitriptyline in side effects. The others were sedating, increased my appetite, and decimated my memory. Clomipramine decreased my appetite and gave me tons of energy. My outlook changed 180 degrees. It may increase anxiety for some, but made me feel so well and happy that I wasn’t worried about anything (not that I didn’t care or was catatonic as on imipramine). I’m no longer always obsessing about the minutiae to the point of being impossible to live with; fear no longer motivates me. This could make someone who is bipolar (last reviewer) more manic and takes a while to adjust your sleep pattern to, but this prescription is a godsend. I’ve been on and off antidepressants for 35 years. I wish I had found it sooner. If the other TCAs made you slow or confused, have weird skin problems, rashes or acne, try this."

For Depression "I use this medication for 5 years after I tried everything Prozac, Cymbalta, Abilify, and all the others. This one was the only one that worked. It took 1 month to feel good and continued to grow for 1 year. It is not like the other medicine that lets you continue in your life, but you still don't feel good. This medicine really makes you strong and without all the bad thoughts and the lack of energy."

For Panic Disorder "It's a wonderful med, but fully eliminating panic takes at least 6-8 months. It's not a benzo, it's going to go down day by day. Be patient. Take some benzos with it and a higher dose if possible. I'm taking 250 mg. Hope this helps someone."

Clomipramine for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "My obsessive compulsive disorder has improved significantly. It has also helped with depression, but I just upped my dose from 150mg to 225mg to see if I can get more of an antidepressant effect. Almost no side effects. I take it in the morning and I do not feel sleepy. Anger and irritability have improved significantly as well. For those who share in the future, let me know how much you take, please. It helps."

For Depression "I've been on over 6 SSRIs along with the combination of benzodiazepines over the past 7 years for the treatment of depression, PTSD, OCD. Nothing has been so life-changing and effective as clomipramine. It's the most expensive prescription I've had ($40/mo), but it's also the most helpful. I noticed the benefits within 2 weeks, with its effects continuing to increase over time. I've been able to wean off of the benzo, and my anxiety has stayed at a manageable level. My OCD has subsided immensely, but more importantly, this medication helped pull me out of a deep depression I had been stuck in for years. I couldn't be more grateful that my psychologist had the idea to try this medication, as I hear it is an older drug. TRY IT! :)"

Clomipramine for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I began taking this drug in 1990. It gave me my life back. I have taken it for 27 years, and it still works for me. For me, the side effects are worth enduring. I also take Buspar twice a day for these 27 years."

Clomipramine for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "After three years on different antipsychotics, I started taking this finally to some relief. I have been taking it now for about six months. It is still working well for obsessing, but the side effects are starting to add up. I have steadily gained weight. Severe dry mouth at first, not so bad now though. Total anorgasmia fixed by Viagra, and uncontrolled twitching. It sounds bad when I write it down but compared to the antipsychotics it's much better. I still feel better than I have and so much happier."

For Panic Disorder "My panic disorder with agoraphobia started when I was 16. Clomipramine (Anafranil) is the only thing that controls it. I am now nearly 60 and still take a small dose, 25 mg, per night. I have tried repeatedly to manage without Clomipramine, and to begin with, it is fine, but then eventually the panic attacks recur and are very debilitating. Thanks to this, I have been able to lead a fulfilled life - working both at home and abroad, traveling, driving, and looking after children and a husband. It frees me up to be myself. I have tried cognitive therapy and other things but always come back to this. It is not nice to be on a high dose though as it affects sexual response. This is why it does not get 10 out of 10."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I have had OCD since 7 and have been on most SSRIs and most SNRIs. Clomipramine is the only drug that quiets the mind. 150+ dosage. Side effects include dry mouth, genital numbing, constipation, and urinary retention."

Clomipramine for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "After taking this medicine, I woke up one morning to realize that I felt connected to the world, and when I started to do my rituals, I realized that I just didn't need to. Amazing. The problem was that I gained 40 pounds, and the high dosage, necessary (over 200), scared me. I would recommend that a person try it and see if a lower dosage will work for them. If so, it's a miracle."

Clomipramine for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "Ever since I was ten years old, I have had intrusive images of inflicting pain and suffering on myself and others. These images create emotional turmoil in life because obviously I don't want these thoughts. I've tried different medications, yet Anafranil seemed to work the best. My intrusive thoughts went away almost completely, granted I was on the highest dose. However, Anafranil had consequences: it gave me irregular heartbeats and heart palpitations to the point where I felt like I was having a heart attack. I had to wean off the medication because of this. This was distressing to me because Anafranil made me emotionally feel like a million bucks, but physically made me feel dumpy."

Clomipramine for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "After a long 12 years of being on Effexor XR, my anxiety OCD was beginning to get worse. My GP felt it necessary to increase my Effexor to 150 mg, and although I had done that in the past, Effexor was just not working anymore and actually began working against me. Awful anxiety at nighttime and my OCD ('I have pure-O'), and I felt I couldn't get things under control. I had enough, and it was time for a change. I saw a different GP who was knowledgeable about anxiety, and he switched me to clomipramine/Anafranil 50 mg to start. I only had a few bad days from the initial switch because Effexor can be nasty to come off, but then my life came back, and I feel great! Just remember nothing will rid you of OCD, but this med is great to manage it!"

Clomipramine for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I battled with OCD since being a child, but I was only diagnosed after being hospitalized in my forties. I have been taking clomipramine at 250 mg a day, along with antipsychotics, for the last 5 years. The intrusive thoughts that used to be so crippling have greatly reduced to a level I can handle. Clomipramine saved my life, literally, as I was hospitalized twice for attempted suicide. The only downside is the side effects. For me, as a man, the impotence and loss of libido are difficult to live with, but it's a price worth paying."
