"Having heart failure (EF 20%) and edema and no longer able to take lisinopril, my doctor put me on this. My edema has improved dramatically and it is proven to help extend the life of patients with CHF. The bad part is this medicine has horrible side effects for men and I have exhibited some. I believe it will help extend my life (I am 53) so I continue to take it."

Aldactone (spironolactone) "Aldactone didn't work for me. I didn't know I had congestive heart failure (CHF) until one day I couldn't walk 20 feet without being out of breath. I went to the doctor, and my blood pressure was sitting at 170/117. I was given Aldactone to take, along with other medications, which lowered my blood pressure to 90/63. Unfortunately, it caused me to faint every time I tried to stand up, and my doctor stopped the medication."

"It was like taking ten Benadryl. I could not stay awake. I was instructed to take it in the morning with food. Within 20 minutes, I was sound asleep. It made my fatigue worse, tenfold. Blurred vision and dizziness, brain fog. Tried it at night instead, but was still groggy and fuzzy the next day. I'm done."

"For me, spironolactone was a miracle pill. I was on Lasix, Losartan, and Metoprolol for heart failure, and I significantly improved, but my ejection rate was only between 35 and 40. My cardiologist wanted to insert an ICD, but I was not convinced. I went to UCLA, and the doctor put me on spironolactone instead of Lasix, and a few months down the road, my ejection rate was 55 and my heart looked completely normal. Yes, like other people, spironolactone gives me bad leg cramps at night, but if it saved my life, I can put up with it."

"Was taking spironolactone for a few months alongside many other heart medications to help aid water retention. Unfortunately, after a few months, I noticed my breasts were enlarging and becoming very sore (gynecomastia). Being male, I was quite worried about this as they were getting rather big. Having spoken to my community heart nurse, I was taken off spironolactone and put on eplerenone. Hopefully, this will stop any further growth. If you notice this, tell your GP immediately, these are obviously not for me."

"This is a bad drug. Caused me to have muscle pain and severe cramping. I had to stay in bed for three days. My kidney function dropped to 30. Can’t believe they would put this stuff on the shelf."

"Blood pressure is very good, but muscle pain is crippling after 4 weeks at 12.5mg. Waking hourly all night with horrid pain in legs. Difficulty urinating as well. Time to give up."

Aldactone (spironolactone) "Didn't work for me. Muscle aches, itch, and most importantly, it dropped my blood pressure too low along with the other medication I am taking. Pressure was 87/54, normally I am 130/70. I was exhausted, tired, weak, and constantly falling asleep. This medication was not for me. Called the doctor, he told me to stop taking it, and this was at 1/2 pill dosage."
