"I was in and out of the ER due to migraines, and on the last day, they gave me a prescription of Compazine. The next day when I took it, I laid down to take a nap and woke up struggling to breathe. My throat was closing, and I could barely talk. I went into a full-blown panic attack and called the ambulance. They gave me three different shots of something I can't remember and rushed me to the hospital. My jaw felt locked, like I was clenching my teeth hard together by the time I got to the hospital. I was shaking uncontrollably and crying hysterically. After I was discharged, I came home and chugged some children's Benadryl and took some Xanax and felt the side effects slowly go away. I have never in my life felt so scared."

"I went to ER for uncontrollable vomiting. I was given Compazine (don’t know the dose but was via IV push and a syringe full). Immediately, I felt anxious and panicky. When I asked the nurse if this was supposed to happen, she said if anything should make me feel more relaxed, WRONG! It’s been exactly six days, and I still feel overly anxious, strangest and most scary vivid dreams, and cannot sit still. Have to walk nearly 8 miles a day to barely be able to sleep at night. BELIEVE THE REVIEWS, I HOPE AND PRAY SOMEONE CAN SEE THESE AND PREVENT THE AWFUL SIDE EFFECTS OTHERS ARE EXPERIENCING! That is definitely going to be listed as an allergy to medication in the future. I would have much rather dealt with throwing up from food poisoning than deal with these endless awful feelings. If anyone knows when I will be feeling normal again and constant panic and anxiety will go, and the awful scary dreams would stop, please PLEASE let me know or post here, I will check regularly."

"Very bad side effects. Given by IV in the emergency room for severe migraine. Jaw clenching, agitation, loss of appetite, groggy, incessant urination (with a foul smell). Side effects lasted for a week after administration."

"Absolute worst experience. Please read the reviews. They gave me this for a headache, heart rate went to 155. I felt like I was going to die, never in my life have I felt that level of panic. My first instinct was to rip my IV out. Became restless, skin crawling feeling like I needed to jump out of my body. It was the most uncomfortable I have ever felt. Once home, I paced back and forth for hours, I could not sit or lay down. I felt like I was losing my mind - I just wanted it to stop. I called the hospital, they suggested Benadryl, the ONLY thing that let me lay down after hours. I took a couple more the next day to be able to stop moving every second. It's been 33 hours since I was given this med, and I am still restless, cannot stop moving my legs. I don't care how much pain or how nauseous I could be or how much someone paid me, never in my life would I take this again, and I wish I had looked it up first."

"I experienced the 'restless, anxious' side effects from this medication, and it's been almost 24 hours, and I am still feeling it in my legs. My headache is gone, which is great, but my legs can't stop moving."

"This was the most awful medicine I have ever had. I thought I was going to die, my heart rate went up to 180. I couldn't be still. I tried ripping my IV out, and when I told the nurse, she laughed and said, 'Just calm down, you're fine.' It was horrible. It's been 3 days, and I'm still having panic attacks, muscle twitches all the time. This medicine has ruined my life, please do not take this."

"Went to the ER twice with a severe migraine, both times given Compazine. It definitely helps with relieving the pain, but the side effects outweigh it for me. Felt like my skin was crawling, restlessness, skin rash, dry mouth, anxiety (triggered a panic attack both times), brought up a lot of bad thoughts of how I was dying. Long term, rebound headache, insomnia, loss of appetite. Also had it with Benadryl once, and that scared me."

"When I had the stomach flu, I was given Compazine as a suppository so that I could eat again without vomiting. It seemed to work okay at first, but I would soon find myself fighting for my life. It started with pain and difficulty speaking, but quickly morphed into my body contorting backward involuntarily to the point where I couldn't move any of my torso, legs, arms, etc., on my own. In quick progression, I went from barely able to voice a whisper to being unable to breathe at all. I was suffocating, and if not for the swift action of EMTs and a life-saving dose of Benadryl, Compazine would have succeeded in being fatal. After the fact, I heard a doctor refer to my adverse reaction as 'Compazine lockdown.' I'm lucky to have lived through my experience taking Compazine."

"I was given this for nausea and a migraine. It did not help me with either, but made me anxious, and I felt like my skin was crawling. I've never experienced anything like that. I was ready to pull the IV out myself and escape from the room if they didn't hurry up and discharge me. I've never had a response to a medicine like that before, and it was absolutely awful. Worst hour of my life."

"Believe the reviews! Do not under any circumstances, when going to the ER for a migraine/headache, have them give you prochlorperazine through an IV. When it was given, I had an insanely fast heart rate, my skin was crawling, and I literally stood up, asked the nurse to remove my IV, and I paced the hospital nonstop. My wife drove me home, and I literally paced my house for almost 3 days straight as I couldn’t sit still or sleep! It’s been a month since then, and I’m still having PTSD from that incident."

"This is the only medication I have ever been given in my entire life that has made me literally want to rip out my IV and run out of the ER. I was given this in the ER to curb the side effects of my lumbar puncture. I have anxiety and RLS, so in the beginning, I thought I was just experiencing a minor panic attack. I felt so restless that I had to go to the bathroom just to do something with myself. When I got back to the bed, I immediately told my gf that I wanted to leave. Was pushing the call light. And damn near left screaming. I flipped my shot on the doctor, and he said this was a common side effect. I told him I feel like I'm going to have a panic attack, and he gave me Benadryl and some kind of benzo. Absolutely horrid."

"After having a migraine and horrible muscle pains for 20+ hours, I went to the ER. This medication, Compazine, was in the migraine 'cocktail' they gave me. I have never felt the way it made me feel. I couldn’t sit still, my body didn’t feel like my own. I was literally freaking out. I wanted to get out of there, I was ready to rip out my IV and run. My husband tried to help keep me calm. When the second nurse came in, she said this happens sometimes and that they should have given it at a slower rate. I do not know if that would’ve made a difference, and I am not giving it a second try. Worst medical experience I’ve had. I do not blame the Dr. or nurses, but this medication has left me traumatized."

"I went to the ER yesterday for a migraine and was given Compazine and fell asleep, however, when I woke up, I felt off, like something wasn't right. I couldn't stay still, I just felt uneasy. It wasn't until I read the comments in this thread that I realized that the Compazine had a side effect on me. I will definitely put it on my non-medication list. I still feel weird the next day. I even called off of work. I hope this helps someone else."

"My mother had a colonoscopy and had a vocal chord spasm, which caused her to cough during it. They gave her some medicine (I don't remember the name) to help dry up her secretions and calm down the coughing. This made her chest tight, painful, and made her feel nauseous after she got home. I took her to the ER, she is allergic to Reglan, so they gave her a mix of Benadryl and Compazine for nausea. Within 5 minutes, she was jittering around and felt like she wanted to rip her IVs out and run home. Her anxiety skyrocketed and her heart rate went up to 154 bpm. It wasn't until they gave her Ativan that her heart rate went down and she was able to calm down. We got sent home, and she was still anxious and fidgeting around for about 4 hours until she finally fell asleep. She woke up and still felt a little anxious and fidgety, but not near as bad as last night. One of the worst experiences she and I have ever had, and she is going to have it noted that she is allergic so she never has to go through it again."

"If I could rate this lower than a 1, I would. Worst. Experience. Of my life. I had severe nausea from a dental infection in the hospital, and the doctors gave me Compazine through IV. I don't even know when this happened, but I had a crazy out-of-body experience. I saw myself laying in my bed and had no idea where I was. I thought I was in Arizona at first, at a hotel, and then freaked out because I had no clue who the people in the room were (my parents, my regular nurses). The room spun, and then I vomited everywhere. It was horrifying. I was nauseous for about twelve more hours and then had hallucinations. I saw people walking in and out of my hospital room that I knew damn well weren't real or there. DO NOT TAKE THIS DRUG."

"Been taking for years for nausea from Irritable Bowel Syndrome, etc. Works great and quickly! Get restless legs next day, but that ends quickly. Heard that if taking it regularly long-term, you should have liver and kidneys monitored, as it can do damage to them!"

"Went to the ER with extreme dizziness. They wound up giving me Compazine. I wasn’t even familiar with what it was. I felt strange at first, but then my hands contorted and froze. My mouth had almost completely clamped shut. An orderly or a CNA just happened to come by to empty trash. I barely was able to say, 'Please go get someone, something’s not right.' The doctor at first thought I had stroked. He ran some tests, gave me some Benadryl, which helped. I would never take this drug again."

"I've never experienced anxiety, I don't take any medication for anxiety, but thanks to this drug, I had my first panic attack. I went to the ER for extreme nausea due to painkillers given to me to alleviate the pain of some kidney stones. Right after being given this medication, I started feeling jittery and like I couldn't breathe. Ten minutes later, I wanted to rip out my own IV, my entire body was shaking and was having facial contractions. The doctor laughed it off, saying I was being overly dramatic and I just needed to breathe. It was the worst experience I've ever had, and I thought the kidney stones were bad enough. Three days later, and I'm finally starting to feel like myself again. I will never take this drug again and have no idea why it's still on the market."

"I went to the ER with a migraine, and I got this through an IV. I was totally fine and all happy until this drug hit me. I went completely insane. I got claustrophobic, I wanted to kill myself, I started twitching, and I got super anxious. They gave me some Benadryl, which helped, so they sent me home. On the way home, it happened again, and it kept happening all night, even after I kept taking Benadryl. The only time I felt not insane was when I was sleeping, but I was still having weird dreams. The next morning, I woke up, and I was still really anxious, but the serious side effects went away. For 2 more days, I still felt anxious, and it was the worst thing ever. Everyone told me this was really rare, and I don't think any of the people there at the ER really knew what was going on. This is a scary drug. I just wanted to share my story."

"I was taking Zofran for years for severe nausea. During a hospital stay, I was given Reglan and had horrible hallucinations, and my skin was crawling, like some people in the reviews had with Prochlorperazine. However, Zofran stopped working for me during the last bout of nausea, so my doc gave me Prochlorperazine, which helped tremendously, and thankfully, I had no side effects."

"This was, like many others on here have said, a terrifying ER experience. I was given Compazine for what they thought was a migraine, plus Benadryl because they warned me about the anxiety. Upon giving it to me via IV, I felt a wave of panic enter my body. My heart stopped for a moment. I immediately wanted to get out of the hospital and tried to rip my IV out. I thought that would be the end of it. But it wasn't. I had crippling anxiety over the next 5 days! Yes, FIVE days. I had constant panic attacks where I would have to stop driving and pull over. One time I almost fainted during a meeting and had to go to the clinic. This drug made me dizzy, lightheaded, feeling like I was going to pass out all the time, gave me the strangest head pressure/tingling feeling, heart racing constantly. I will never ever take this drug again. Worst experience."

"I was given a migraine cocktail that had Compazine included in it. This medication made my symptoms a million times worse! I started with my heart pounding and a severe anxious feeling immediately. I was given this med through an IV. It literally felt like an instant panic attack. It's been 4 days now, and I still am having spontaneous bouts of anxiety due to this medication. The half-life is 24 hours with this med, and it's been well over 96 hours since I was administered it, and I'm still experiencing side effects. I also got low blood pressure, which gave me cold sweats, disorientation, and I was freezing. My only relief was from hot baths, which made my blood pressure go up some. I also had dissociation, as if I wasn't even myself, from this medication. I cannot stress enough how awful this medication is, and it should NOT be used as nausea relief unless it's for EXTREME circumstances. This medication is used in people with schizophrenia! I am still not myself days after, and it's miserable."

"Went to the ER for a severe migraine... They gave me Compazine and Benadryl. 20 min later I was in a severe panic... ripping my IVs out. Calling out to the nurse, saying I was leaving!! They had to give me more Benadryl to reverse it. I left the hospital feeling worse than I did when I went in!! Horrible experience!"

"I had experienced high agitation and restlessness with this drug before, so it’s been on my allergy list. Unfortunately, I was going through a difficult procedure, and it’s the only anti-emetic this office offered. It had been over 10 years since I took it, so I figured I’d try it again. Bad idea. This drug causes severe anxiety, agitation, muscle pain, and a general feeling of needing to rip out of your skin! I remember now why it was on my DO NOT USE list, the effects stay with you for a long time too. I will never take this again. There’s a reason it’s listed as a mental health drug/antipsychotic. In my opinion, it MAKES you psychotic."
