For GERD "Since my early twenties (I am in my mid 50s now), I have had great difficulty swallowing, with a feeling that something was stuck in my throat, followed by esophageal spasms, followed by projectile vomiting of stomach acid. Episodes could last for up to 10 hours. I've been hospitalized several times while having severe episodes of uncontrollable spasms/vomiting for hours. I was misdiagnosed for decades, had my throat stretched by laparoscopy/balloons periodically, and tried a variety of medications. Nothing helped. I was extremely underweight from not being able to eat for so many years. Finally, a doctor put me on Protonix, and it was a miracle. Unbelievably life-changing. My only complaint was I gained 20 lbs in the first year I was on it. I take it twice a day and can eat whatever I like with no reaction."

For GERD "This was not effective in reducing acid. Four days after stopping Nexium and starting Protonix the heartburn started and I had to take Gaviscon. I had a 3-month supply, so I kept taking it and ended up with a swollen, painful esophagus and difficulty swallowing with vomiting. I stopped taking Nexium because my insurance no longer would cover it."

For Stomach Ulcer "Spent two and a half years vomiting everything but coca cola, ramen, and mashed potatoes. Had tried numerous ulcer medicines, all failing miserably. Protonix made life bearable again! It actually ceased the pain!"

For GERD "I started on Zantac, and it just stopped working for me. I've been taking this pill for years, and it does wonders! I have 0 noticeable side effects. It's important to take it both every day and before you eat, or it is not as effective."

For GERD "Best medicine ever! I have taken Protonix for over 5 years now with no complaints other than when I run out and have to use over-the-counter meds that do not work. I usually take the Protonix first thing in the morning. It lasts all day. There have been times I have forgotten to take it first thing in the morning, however, no matter when I take it, the pill still works within 15 minutes of being taken as if I had taken it in the morning."

For Erosive Esophagitis "On Protonix only two days, feel 100% better from my erosive esophagitis. I couldn’t swallow because of the pain, and the gnawing pain between the breastbone killed me. Ended up in the ER (many) times. This med helped so much!!!"

For Barrett's Esophagus "I have been using this medication almost since it came on the market. I take a dose of 50% over the maximum recommended dosage. The medication seems to have 7-10 hours of effectiveness before rebound symptoms appear. I've tried several of the other proton pump inhibitors, which were not very effective."

For Stomach Ulcer "I was taking an acid reducer called Ranitidine quite often over a 3-year period. Doctor prescribed 40mg Protonix for 28 days, and my stomach felt so much better. Now going without the medication for 10 days, it feels as if my stomach is not doing so well. Doctor advised that I take 20 mg when needed. Bottom line - it worked for me."

For GERD "I took this medication until my HMO dropped it from their formulary. While taking it, I felt great. I took only one a day, and if I forgot to take it or forgot to refill it before running out, I could miss a day or two without the heartburn returning. My doctor subsequently put me on Prilosec, twice a day. If I miss one, heartburn returns with a vengeance. If I miss a whole day, it takes three to five days to get the heartburn under control, again."

For GERD "Protonix totally eliminates my throat pain, hoarseness, reflux, etc. After 6 years, my insurance decided not to cover it, so for the last few months, I've been on several other medicines, and they just don't work. My doctor is trying to convince them I need the Protonix. Wish me luck."

For Duodenal Ulcer "I was recently hospitalized for 4 days with a duodenal ulcer. They ran Protonix through an IV -- I was in miserable pain. Within 2 days, no problems, and I could eat again. I'm now on 40mg 2x a day, and soon decreasing to 1. It really works, with no side effects!"

For GERD "I have had GERD as long as I can remember. It wasn't quite so bad before pregnancy that I decided against medication. Since becoming pregnant, it was to the point of throwing up stomach acid a few times a day, and I could barely move. We tried a few other medications that just did not work. I have been on Protonix for 1 month, and I have not had a single bit of heartburn since the very first day I took it."

For Peptic Ulcer "Hospitalized in January 2012 due to a bleeding peptic ulcer, which I didn't know I had. The GI doctor said the ulcer was due not to H. pylori but entirely to NSAIDs, specifically the nightly 325 mg aspirin (combination therapy with Plavix for RCA stent, December 2010), to which I added generous doses of Advil (600-800 mg) most days, trying to combat muscle pain from simvastatin. My current combination of Livalo 2 mg and 400 mg CoQ10 has resulted in no pain. I am supposed to continue taking Protonix as long as I am taking aspirin (now only 81 mg). There have been no visible side effects after a year and a half. I do take magnesium 2-3 times a week due to concerns about Protonix lowering my magnesium levels. I also take Caltrate for the osteoporosis it may cause. Protonix is easy to take but hard to get off of, I hear."

For Stomach Ulcer "After a couple of days using Protonix, I felt relief in my stomach of the full feeling I would get whenever I ate. I used to feel very bloated and uncomfortable after I ate a meal. I wasn't overeating either. I had to watch what I ate, such as spices, onions, etc. Most of those symptoms have gone away."

For GERD "I had tried every other medicine out there, and none of them has worked for me like Protonix does. In combination with Carafate, I feel like me again. The chest pain, burping, and burning have almost completely gone away. No side effects at all. I highly recommend this medication."

For GERD "I have had GERD for years now. I started out taking Prilosec, but it started making me burp a lot, and it would just absolutely hurt. My doctor switched me to Protonix, and that has helped so much. I take 40 mg twice a day. I don't burp nearly as much, and food doesn't creep back up into my mouth like it did so much either. I also take Zantac at night, but it still had helped a lot even before then. It's been such a relief. I didn't get any side effects from it either. I take it 30 minutes before breakfast and 30 minutes before lunch."

For GERD "My GERD mainly affected my voice and was the source of mild chest pain. I started Protonix about a week ago, and it's been a massive help already. I feel like I can finally breathe again. I've tried OTC drugs in the past, such as omeprazole and Gaviscon, but neither helped. I'm virtually symptom-free now and have experienced no side effects."

For GERD "I was recently diagnosed with GERD. Of course, this was after a trip to the hospital thinking I was having heart problems. The doc put me on Protonix, and after about 1 week it's as if my life was back to normal. Unfortunately, my insurance doesn't cover it anymore, so I gave it a '9' instead of a '10' rating for this alone. With many generic others costing only $5 for 60 days. Anyway, I suggest that if you do try it, give it a few days to work."

For GERD "After two years of SEVERE PAIN in my stomach and esophagus, I finally decided to go to the doctor and get help. I thought all the pain was coming from an ulcer, and after two years of pain, I found out that I did not have an ulcer (yet). The doctor prescribed me Protonix. In less than two days, all the pain and acids in my stomach stopped! I finally don't have acid reflux."

For Peptic Ulcer "Esophageal ulcer: I had problems off and on with horrible heartburn throughout my teen years until I ended up with an ulcer due to undiagnosed acid reflux and other problems. I was prescribed Protonix, and it was the only thing that worked. Since then, I have been able to use Tagamet (cimetidine) for everyday use, along with watching what I eat, but the Protonix is awesome."

For GERD "I was put on this medication after my insurance company stopped covering another PPI that worked well for me. I lasted one month and spent most of it popping ranitidine since anything I ate or drank caused almost immediate heartburn. By the end of the month, I was vomiting. It was awful. I hated to be a pain, but I called my PCP and told them I needed to go back on my previous med, which, of course, involved a lot of paperwork on his part. I have a friend that swears by this medication, but mostly all I did was swear during the month I took it."

For Stomach Ulcer "Prescribed this for a stomach ulcer with possible bleeding. This medication has been a miracle for me since the first dose. Immediately eliminated abdominal pain from the ulcer, and although I am still not able to eat much, I am able to eat solid foods again. This medication did have side effects and made me nauseous, but this stopped after the first three doses, which was also helped with Zofran. However, the side effects were minimal compared to the pain and weakness I was feeling before being prescribed this medication. I go for an endoscopy in a few days, and I’m very hopeful that it has helped to heal the ulcer (not fully, of course, as I haven’t finished the medication yet). I hope this review helps someone!"

For GERD "I have had severe GERD/acid reflux for nearly 6 years. It has put me in the hospital 7 times now and has totally destroyed my teeth, which I have always been meticulous about caring for. Presently, it's also causing me swallowing problems and voice troubles. The pain the GERD can generate is an actual true '10'-far, far worse than the pain I experienced from a quad cardiac bypass surgery. My doctor gave me Protonix for it, and it worked very well on reducing, perhaps, 80% of the pain. Unfortunately, the medication caused peripheral edema big time, and I had to go off of it again. The edema immediately went away, but the pain came back too. I have noticed this reaction from almost all proton pumps that I have tried to date."

For Erosive Esophagitis "This is literally my second day on Protonix, and I am very happy. I will say I have experienced dizziness for about the first 2 to 3 minutes upon taking. I can deal with that; I am not experiencing acid reflux! I have literally taken Prilosec for six years. I had the gastric sleeve, which brings upon extreme heartburn."

For GERD "I have had GERD for over 10 years now, and I tried Nexium OTC, which helped, but I ended up in the hospital because I had chest pain really bad. The hospital put me on Cafarate and Protonix, it helped right away. I take Protonix twice a day and Cafarate before every meal and at bedtime. I can eat anything I want and have no more pain in my chest. I will continue to take this medication as long as I can because I can eat anything without any pain."
