Metronidazole for Pelvic Inflammatory Disease "For the first couple of days, every time I took this, I was overcome with a severe migraine. After a few days, the migraines stopped, but what came next was far worse: insomnia, fever, fainting, no appetite, severe exhaustion, dizziness, and brain fog/decreased motor skills. Due to the medicine’s side effects, I was convinced my uterine infection was killing me, going septic. I couldn’t tell if I was sick from the infection or from the antibiotics - neither could the doctor. Hours after my final dose, I collapsed, BP dropped, fever and shakes set in. I spent the next 3 days in bed, unable to eat, with constant diarrhea, heart palpitations, vertigo, too nauseated to speak, unable to do anything but sleep. It has now been 4 days since I’ve been off the medication. I am still dizzy and quite weak, but I feel a little more normal. I hope the uterine infection has been properly managed. Time will tell if the side effects were worth it."

For Clostridioides difficile Infection "My rating is not on the medicine's efficacy as I am only halfway through. I just want to share the hellacious side effects that I have had on it. I literally want to die. Constant headache, fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, and absolutely everything tastes terrible. The pharmacist recommended lots of Gatorade to battle dehydration, but nothing helps. I'm determined to finish the 10 days to beat my infection, but I'm not sure I won't die before then (yes, some exaggeration, but I do feel terrible)."

For Clostridioides difficile Infection "Horrible experience! I was taking this medication, 500 mg three times a day. I was on Cefdinir for 3 days for a UTI, and I didn't take a probiotic while on the medication, so I contracted C. diff. I also work in the hospital, so while being on the medication, I was more prone to catching something. The C. diff was terrible, but the medication side effects were even worse. It cleared up the infection pretty fast, but like I said, the side effects were the worst. This is day 10/10, I still have the metallic taste even though I brush my teeth 4 times a day. I had dark brown colored urine, dizziness, headache, loss of appetite, and nausea. I would not recommend this medication to anyone, even though I myself work in the healthcare field."

For Bacterial Infection "I took this along with Cipro. After 3 days on a 10-day treatment, I was feeling much better. I made the decision to discontinue both. I had horrible diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, a nasty taste in my mouth, no appetite, zero energy, and sleepiness. I would not take this combo again for anything. I lost 5 lbs while taking it due to the inability to eat or drink much."

For Bacterial Vaginosis "I left an earlier review but am now finished taking this medication, so wanted to share my final experience, and yes, I do mean final because I will NEVER be taking this medication again. It made me extremely, extremely sick to my stomach, unable to move, feeling like I was gonna puke, appetite gone, terrible taste in my mouth, etc. These symptoms actually got WORSE the longer I took this medication. I quit taking it on day 4. I couldn’t take it anymore. I finished out inserting boric acid suppositories to fight the rest of the infection. I am hoping that works. Yeah, this medication was a nightmare, and my body does not like it for some reason. AT ALL. I don’t know if anyone here has had the extent of sickness I did while taking this medicine. But if you do, trust me, you are not the only one who is unable to take this."

For Bacterial Infection "I was prescribed this medication twice daily for 7 days to treat BV. Like many others, I experienced the metallic mouth, but this was the least of my worries. The abdominal pain, bloating, constant nausea, loss of appetite, and acid buildup in my gut became unbearable. Initially, I contributed the tiredness and nausea to my early pregnancy, but at times the pain was more like labor. Finally, I contacted my OB, who advised probiotics to get my gut back in balance since the meds had most likely killed off the good bacteria. It's taken me the better part of 2 weeks to feel like myself again. I'd rather live with BV and never take these meds again."

For Bacterial Infection "I was prescribed a 14-day course of this medication for SIBO. The first five days I had nausea, diarrhea, foggy brain, metal mouth, dark urine, and an upset stomach. Then my foggy brain got worse, and I was dizzy, irritable, and depressed. This is not normal for me. I felt uncomfortable driving any serious distance, and some days wouldn’t drive at all. I feel just overwhelmingly not good. Headache, loss of appetite, and all the previous symptoms, and now the last three days my heart has been racing! Today is my last day, and I can’t tell if it’s helped the SIBO because the side effects mimic so many of the symptoms. Hoping for the best-would have a clear conversation with your doctor before you start these!"

For Bacterial Vaginosis "Ok, so I'm 21, just so everyone knows. I'm taking this medication for 7 days at 500 mg twice a day. It's been pretty rough. The first tablet, I was so tired, sensitive to light, super sick, headache, chills that felt like a fever, sweating, no sleep. The second and third day, all the crazy symptoms went away, and now I'm seeing dark urine (which is gone if I drink more water than usual), a horrible metallic taste in my mouth, no appetite, I'm super bloated (the kind that you can't suck in, if you know what I mean it's almost like my stomach is swollen), and I feel so nauseous, it's awful. These are the symptoms I have right now, and they're honestly awful. I also still get cold at night. I'm on day 3 and I literally can't wait to finish this medication."

For Clostridioides difficile Infection "I was diagnosed with C. diff about a week ago. They think I got it from taking Cefdinir for acne for way too long. I don’t know if this drug is working for me. I guess I’m not going to the bathroom as much as before, but I’m very constipated and I have absolutely no appetite. Then when I do eat, my stomach pays for it, so I try to refrain from eating altogether. Today is day 6 on the meds, and I’m experiencing severe pain when urinating like I have never felt that before!! :( It's awful. I’m beginning to feel lifeless. I have no energy to do anything, and that’s because I have to return back to work in two days. I thought medicine is supposed to make you feel better with time, not worse. I really hope these symptoms start to subside."

For Giardiasis "I'm taking 5 400 mg Flagyl tablets daily with a meal, and I feel worse now than I did with Giardia. I've lost my appetite entirely, I've been stuck in bed for a week, and now I'm off work. I had been going to work with the Giardia because I thought it was IBS. But since I have been taking this poison (and it does feel exactly like I'm being poisoned), I barely get out of bed, I am so fatigued. I am finding it hard to concentrate, my mouth tastes like I have been chewing on aluminum foil. I feel nauseous constantly, constipated, and no matter how much water I drink, I feel dehydrated. My urine is a dark color with a strange smell. I have read this drug is an antagonist of vitamin B1, so I will start taking B1 and magnesium supplements to hopefully improve these horrible side effects. Good luck to anyone reading this. The only reason I have given it a GENEROUS two stars is that so far it has worked to reduce my giardia symptoms, but once I finish this course, I will NEVER touch this stuff again."

For Bacterial Vaginosis "Had to take this for a week straight, 2x a day. Makes your body super tired, diarrhea, loss of appetite, slightly irritable, dry mouth, upset stomach (cramps), also back and thigh pain. All in all, it seems to be working on my lady parts. Good luck to anyone else!"

For Bacterial Vaginosis "I was diagnosed with bacterial vaginosis after having cold coagulation following an abnormal smear. I had a bad odor and swelling of the abdomen. My doctor prescribed me metronidazole 400 mg twice a day, as well as co-amoxiclav 500/125 mg three times a day. I found after taking the first few doses I felt quite drowsy and tired, and I expected this, as metronidazole is such a strong antibiotic. I felt a loss of appetite but carried on eating as normal and taking the tablets while eating. Once I was on the second day, I started to feel quite nauseous but soon found this to be if I allowed myself to get hungry, so definitely take this tablet with food! The odor was gone by day 3 and so did the side effects! A wonder drug! :-)"

For Bacterial Vaginosis "Had BV and prescribed 2 pills a day for 7 days. Cannot drink alcohol for 10 days, which sucks but is worth it to be healthy again. I tried the gel before and it was messy and didn't work. This pill makes me feel nauseous, especially at nighttime. Bad headaches and tired 24/7. I can barely make myself get up and out of the house. I forgot to take 2 twice a day, so I had to take them longer than the 7 days. I think it worked, hope it is gone for good. I also have no appetite, nothing sounds good to eat. Force yourself to eat something when you take it and coat the pill before putting it in your mouth, the taste is horrible, like no pill I've ever had before. I dipped mine in random foods to avoid the taste (frosting, pudding, peanut butter is a good one)."

For Clostridioides difficile Infection "I caught C. diff after having two surgeries in 2 days and a hospital stay. I was in so much pain from the C. diff, nausea, diarrhea, cramping, sharp stabbing pains, and no appetite. I did one round of meds 3 times a day for 14 days. The symptoms only subsided a little, got tested again, and still had high toxin levels. So they gave me another round, symptoms again got a little better. Got tested again and still had the toxins, so yet another round. To this day, my insides are still haywire, but maybe have to do with the gallbladder removal as well. My surgeon explained C. diff can be a hard bugger to eliminate sometimes. So I feel like the medicine did its job, it won the war, just took a few battles to get there."

Metronidazole for Bacterial Infection "I only have 2 days left, thank goodness. I'm taking 500 mg twice a day. This medication is working very well, but if I ever run into this problem again, I will opt for a different medication only because I am constantly nauseous and have no appetite whatsoever. It has been like my whole pregnancy in 5 days without actually being sick this time. I just have to keep reminding myself, 2 more days, then you're done."

For Bacterial Infection "I wish I had read these sooner. I had a similar situation as another poster here where my doctor diagnosed me without even checking to see whether I had BV or not, but he believed it was some sort of infection. I am on day 3 of 7 for this medication, and while the symptoms started out mildly, though I had a loss of appetite from day 1, the symptoms quickly increased, and now I'm experiencing flu-like symptoms where my body aches. I am constantly fatigued, and even on waking up, I am still exhausted. My head hurts, I feel nauseous, and my muscles are sore. I'm only continuing on with this medication because I'm told that if I stop taking it early, then things will be worse."

For Bacterial Infection "I made the mistake of not reading about the side effects before taking this medication. I took my first pill at night and was up all night with stomach cramps and diarrhea. It was so bad I thought I had food poisoning. By the second day, I had no appetite, and the cramping and bloating in my stomach were unbelievable. It was at this time that I started reading the side effects and realized this was indeed a bad side effect. I too was so happy when my last day arrived to take my last pill. And although I also experienced an awful taste in my mouth after taking this pill, that was the least of my complaints as all the other side effects were worse. Good luck taking this medication."

For Bacterial Infection "I went to the doctor, as for 2 months I was experiencing diarrhea and mushy stools up to 5 times in 2 hours. I had lower left abdominal pain near the belly button, severe bloating, gas, belching, and stomach burning, no appetite, body aches, but no fever. The doctor never ran tests except for H. pylori. No other testing. I got prescribed Ciprofloxacin 500 mg every 12 hours and Metronidazole 500 mg every 8 hours, both for 10 days. I'm on day 5, and the side effects have definitely made me feel worse: metallic taste, burning stomach, still mushy stools, dizzy, confused, slurred speech, fatigue, and no energy. I have begun to see a thin white thread-like substance in my stool. Abdominal pain has subsided. I have no diagnosis, which is somewhat unsettling to me based on these harsh meds. I've also noticed that stools now have no odor at all. I have found that a banana and half a glass of milk help with the Metronidazole, but I cannot wait to be done with this medication."

For Diverticulitis "I’ve been on a dose of Cipro and Flagyl for 7 days. Three days to go-thankfully!!!!! My experience and side effects are similar to what I’ve read on this site. All I can say is, “It better work.” I’m 70 years old and never remember feeling this bad. The doctors really should tell you about the horrible taste in your mouth, lack of appetite, etc., etc. Pretty miserable. Thankful there are drugs to combat illnesses. Just think about how our ancestors must have suffered!!!"

For Diverticulitis "I was diagnosed with diverticulitis. Currently on my 5th day. The positive side is I am actually feeling better, far better, but side effects are hitting hard: diarrhea, heartburn, upset stomach, zero appetite, and the urge to vomit. There are still a few days to go. I will keep going since it's for my good."

For Bacterial Vaginosis "This is my first experience with BV, and if I ever get it again, I plan on trying a different route before doing this antibiotic again because it was so rough on my body. Of course, if all else fails, I would do it again. My only BV symptom was odor. Doc prescribed me 7 days of Flagyl - 500 mg x 2 daily. The drug made my skin hot and flushed, internal prickly. I felt lethargic, with little appetite. My mouth felt tingly, and I would slur my words; itchy eyes, headaches, rapid heartbeat, inability to sleep, loss of personality... By day 2 of the pills, my odor was gone, but by day 4, the symptoms from the pills were almost too bad to finish. I started taking probiotics on day 5, and it was a complete game changer. All the symptoms were so much better. Plus, it lowers the risk of developing a yeast infection (common side effect of Flagyl). I take 2 probiotics with each one pill twice daily and two probiotics alone at lunch. I also made sure to drink electrolytes (i.e., coconut water) and eat food with each pill. Good luck!"

For Giardiasis "Just finished my treatment of Flagyl, and it was a roller coaster. It began when I contracted giardiasis from a lake. The virus itself lasted about 2 and 1/2 weeks. I then stopped eating due to my stomach shrinking from all the food posing from giardiasis. I started the medication and was able to eat more and more each day. The side effects are pretty bad, sadly, but if you're looking to get better, then it is worth it 100%. I had an upset stomach 24/7, metallic taste in my mouth, constipation, diarrhea, and complete loss of appetite. This drug is intended to kill everything in your system, and I will not be around people for another 3 days. The drug did work, and that is what its purpose was. If anyone gets this disease."

Metronidazole for Bacterial Infection "Within 2 days, my bacterial vaginitis completely cleared up. I don't take antibiotics or any sort of medicine often, and this is why: no appetite and some other side effects, but would rather take that over bacterial vaginitis!"

For Bacterial Vaginosis "I had no symptoms of BV but was diagnosed after a pap and was given the pill for 2 pills a day for 7 days. The side effects have been absolutely awful. I went home from work on day two thinking I had the stomach flu (nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, fever, sweating). I finally realized it was the pills. I've also experienced trembling hands, night sweats, dry mouth, fatigue, loss of appetite (which is weird because I'm PMSing and usually starving at this time!), mood swings, and increased anxiety. I don't find the taste of the actual pill to be as unbearable as everyone says, but it does leave that metallic taste in my mouth. I'm on day 4 and don't even know if I want to take the pill before work this morning!"

Metronidazole for Bacterial Infection "I felt fine until day 4, where my whole body was aching. I had to take the day off work and stay in bed to try to recover and rest. No nausea at all or metallic taste, but definitely muscle weakness, low appetite, and very low mood. Worst antibiotic I have ever taken, will be devastated to go through this and not see a result. Here’s hoping!"
