Metoclopramide "Yesterday, I went to the emergency room with severe vertigo that I had for three days prior, and a migraine had started two days after the vertigo. It was painful, it was the first time I ever went to an emergency room for a headache. They were very worried I could not walk due to the severe vertigo, so they decided to give me meclizine and Reglan in an IV drip and something for nausea. Within 10 minutes of the IV, I began shaking uncontrollably all over, and my muscles were twitching. My stomach was burning horribly, and I literally felt a panic so severe I thought I was dying. Finally, it became so bad the doctor gave me a Valium, and within 10 minutes, I felt back to normal. Reglan was the problem, and I NEVER want that feeling again!"

Metoclopramide "Well, went to the ER for a massive migraine and vertigo. At first, they gave 1 mg of Ativan, 1,000 mg of acetaminophen, and 600 mg of ibuprofen. Even though it made me feel slightly better, the tightness around my head was still there and the room was still spinning, just not as bad. So they decided to give me 'the cocktail,' which included Compazine, Reglan, and Imitrex. After about 15 minutes, I felt so restless, like I needed to keep moving my body. I thought it was the combination of all the damn meds, but then I stumbled onto this website. Now I know it was the Reglan. Anyway, I was sent home with a prescription for Reglan and was told to take it with Tylenol and Advil for migraines. Well, the first night I took it, I was up all night fighting against the worst anxiety attack I've ever had. It lasted all night long. Never again will I take this medicine."

Metoclopramide "I was inpatient in the hospital for a 5-day migraine. I was given Reglan and Benadryl through IV several times over a 4-day hospital stay, and it helped the migraines in minutes. I want you to understand how miserable I was. I had to have the curtains always drawn, couldn't watch TV or listen to music, and the room always felt like it was spinning. I noticed that when they administered the Benadryl, it burned when given through IV. I had competent nurses who administered it slowly to prevent intense burning. I also noticed after both were administered, I felt like I needed to move around, so my fingers and legs twitched a little, but not too much. It helped more than anything, and I'm really happy it was there as an option."

"I had a migraine for 3 days and noticed double vision on day 3. I had my sister take me to the ER. I was given metoclopramide in my IV. It worked like a wonder drug. I have a prescription and haven't had any problems. Three months later, I had another migraine, took a 10g tablet of regular, and took a nap. Felt great. Sorry it doesn't work for everyone."

Metoclopramide "Horrible, it’s been over 2 years, and I swear I have PTSD from it. I had it twice. The second time the nurse told me it was probably injected in the IV too quickly, that’s why it caused panic. She did it slowly, and within seconds the same thing happened: panic, anxiety, like my body was going to go nuts, but my head hurt so bad, and I felt sleepy, so it was this crazy internal battle. I’m afraid to take any medication now or go to the hospital with severe migraines, so I just suffer. How can these even be allowed to be administered to people? Worst experiences of my life."

Metoclopramide "The cocktail didn't do a thing. First Benadryl, then Reglan. No help, and it wasted precious hours that I was in pain. I've had migraines for 26 years and know what helps. I was in the ER for ~6 hours. Only when given Fentanyl did the pain level 27 go down to a ~4. I told them Demerol and Phenergan knocks it out, but the ER doctor didn't listen. (Why did you ask me then?) I was left with a dull headache for 1.5 days."

Metoclopramide "I was given part of my migraine cocktail in the ER via IV. They said it would make me anxious, but the IV Benadryl would help counteract it. LET ME TELL YOU, IT DID NOT!! I am an RN and have given this med IV push, I had no idea it could make you feel like this!! I wanted to crawl out of my skin, I could not breathe. Anxiety is an understatement. I even had residual anxiety days later and still feel anxious thinking about it now. I had shakes so bad."

Metoclopramide "Went to the ER for a migraine. They gave me this drug to ease my stomach. Three days later, back in the ER with chest pain and feeling panicky. The day still feels the same. The doctor gave me Ativan. Has anyone else had this happen? And when will it go away?"

Metoclopramide "I went to the hospital for a migraine and vomiting. Within seconds of administering the IV of Reglan, I sat straight up, couldn't stop rocking back and forth, felt like I was losing my mind and wanted to run out of there until my legs fell off. I was begging for help. It really does feel like you are being tortured. I remember looking over at the clock, and it was 2:00 in the morning, thinking 'why didn't I just stay home and suck it up,' but at least now I know. I had a similar experience with Compazine (also used for nausea)."

Metoclopramide "I have chronic migraines and used to get either Dilaudid or Demerol with Phenergan and Toradol. Now, because I'm 'chronic,' the hospital will not give me narcs. They try and give me Reglan and Benadryl, which does nothing at all, yet they still won't give me anything for relief. I've told them over and over Reglan does nothing, but they don't listen. Because I have PO Dilaudid that I usually vomit up when the migraine is so bad, they tell me they'll give me Phenergan and go home and take Dilaudid, which won't work. I go to the ER for immediate relief, not to be treated like a dope seeker."

Metoclopramide "I’ve had migraines for over 30 years. It took a few ER visits for me to realize that Reglan took away my nausea, took the edge off my pain (never completely took it away), but made me paranoid and anxious!!!!! I tell them I’m allergic because I will never take it again. Toradol is great! The injection burns, but the migraine relief begins in less than 10 minutes. Pain is gone in 20 minutes. I ask for it by name!!"

Metoclopramide "I was given Reglan in the ER via IV for a horrible migraine, amongst many other drugs due to my original reason for going to the ER. Almost immediately, I felt weird, like I was crawling out of my skin, as if I could run to California, and I live in CT. It was horrible, I would avoid this medicine, as the side effects are far worse than the benefit. There is another drug that can do the same thing! But whatever you do, don't ever take Reglan, please!"

Metoclopramide "How do they give this out without asking about mental health? I am bipolar, and after 5 minutes of having a Reglan IV in my arm, my mood changed, and it felt like I was in some depressive manic episode. I wanted to leave the hospital, and I was tweaking in the bed. I couldn’t stop crying and begged the nurse to help me. More Benadryl put me to sleep, but for 10 minutes, I was in a nightmare."

"Awful medication. I still can't get over the reaction I had to it. Went to the ER on Friday because I'm 9 months pregnant and my BP had skyrocketed. I only had a small headache, but they insisted on giving me this Reglan rubbish and Benadryl via IV. As soon as it went into my system, a nightmare broke loose. I felt dizzy, panicked, and started to shiver badly. Fight or flight kicked in, and I almost ripped the IV out. My poor husband just kept saying, 'just calm down.' Yeah, right... I was sure they were trying to kill me and my baby, and I just kept saying, 'I want to go home' and 'get this sh*t out of me, they're killing me.' Finally, the nurse came back, saw what was happening, and flushed the IV line, all while nonchalantly telling me about how another patient had this reaction and ripped their clothes off. Nice! I felt better after the flush in about 5 minutes. After this, I will insist on knowing what drugs they give me. No Reglan or metoclopramide ever. Ban this stuff!"

"I unfortunately just went through all of this again this past Saturday. The same wave of terror hit me as soon as they started the “migraine cocktail.” I even told the guy I’ve been through this before. I think I have a bad reaction to whatever drug you’re giving me. He then said I was probably just a Reglan, it tends to give people jitters. I said no, this is not just jitters, it is a full-blown panic attack. Is there anything you can take to counteract what you just gave me? And he just said no. We can’t give you anything for jitters here. Four hours of anxiety feeling like I’m freezing, having to pee every few minutes, diarrhea, heart racing, trouble breathing, feelings of doom, and the thought of wanting to run out of the hospital-all of these feelings came back. Why are they giving people this medication and not explaining the side effects?"

Metoclopramide "I have about 15 migraines/month with status migraine at least once per season. This is actually an improvement from daily incapacitating migraines. There are a lot of empty promises/side effects with migraine drugs and often not a lot of relief. Reglan for me was OK. I did not get a ton of side effects, but I found that it does help me break status migraine at home after I found it effective with the Migraine Cocktail in the ER. It's not the immediate 'out of migraine now' feeling. I find that after I take 3 or 4 doses my migraines taper off out of status within a few (2-3) days. I hate the ER, but I like to incorporate successes in my at-home routine after discussing it with my neuro. I know that feeling of wanting to rip out the IV. I'd check to see if it was being pushed with a steroid. If you had a rough time in the ER but it broke your migraine cycle, I'd talk to your doc about incorporating this in your migraine relief toolbox. It's not perfect but worth a shot."

"I've never written a review before, but I have to for this one because it's just unreal. I have been going to the hospital for migraines for over 10 years, and they always give me the usual 'migraine cocktail.' Every time, I have to ask and remind them to give me Benadryl because, otherwise, I will go insane with metoclopramide. And no joke, every single nurse and doctor has no clue what I'm talking about. They look at me like, 'Huh? Why do you need that? What drug does that to you? What symptoms do you get? Hm, okay, I'll ask the doctor.' I have to fight just for Benadryl! And even with the Benadryl, I still feel super restless. But if I don't add metoclopramide, I will still be in pain. It's just horrible. This drug is the worst. If I took it alone without anything else, which I learned the hard way the first time, I thought I was dying. I wanted to crawl out of my skin and go running down the street, screaming. I highly recommend not taking this drug at all."

"Had a horrible, horrible headache for 3 days, so I called a doctor I knew. I told him I can't open my eyes, I'm dizzy, and my head hurts so bad, and I'm nauseated and hardly can stand up or see. He said go to the ER now, so I called my mom. When we got to the hospital, I walked into a glass door, didn't even see it or feel it, just know my head was pounding. Once I got in back, they gave me a cocktail of Toradol, Benadryl, and Reglan. Within 30 minutes, my blood pressure was down from 199/100 to 130/77, and the headache was gone. I felt the weight lifted off my head. Thank you, RN at SRMC. I will remember that cocktail always."

Metoclopramide "I was diagnosed with a migraine. Given Reglan pill and ibuprofen. Didn't really take my headache away until after I got home and time passed. I was able to take my Excedrin Migraine. Not sure Reglan worked as well as the good old standby... so no need for me to fill the prescription he also gave me. One was enough."

Metoclopramide "Like everyone else mentions, DO NOT accept for migraine treatment! They will tell you they're giving you a migraine cocktail (Benadryl, Reglan, Toradol). I have anxiety and am prone to anxiety/panic attacks, it induced the worst anxiety attack I have ever had. Sharing this because I started shaking uncontrollably. I almost pulled the needle out of my arm. I couldn't walk when they asked me to get up for my brain scan. When I told the staff I was starting to feel anxious, they said, 'Yeah, you'll feel funny,' which is quite the understatement. I wanted to scream. I couldn't hold my arms out in front of me for the neuro exam (I had been having migraines for a week straight, so I expressed my neuro concerns). Thankfully, I survived, but I am genuinely traumatized."

Metoclopramide "CAUTION: HORRIBLE REACTION. I was hospitalized for severe migraine. They gave me the 'migraine cocktail' which included Reglan. Wow! Where to begin? 15 or 20 minutes later, maybe, I started sweating, ripped my sweater off in front of my fiancé and the doctor, then I immediately had to go to the restroom and got diarrhea. I wanted to jump out of my skin, I felt so anxious, irritated, it was absolutely terrifying! I forgot what to say to the doctor about my symptoms and cried to my fiancé that I wanted to leave immediately but couldn't. I will NEVER take Reglan again. I am so bewildered that this happened to me and other patients. DO NOT TAKE!"

"I took my son to the hospital because he was having persistent headaches. They gave him a cocktail of Benadryl and Reglan. Immediately after the administration of Reglan, he started acting funny, eyeballs wide, saying, 'I feel dizzy,' saying, 'I wanna go home,' trying to say he needed to use the bathroom at the same time, acting nervous and scared. He has used Benadryl in the past, so I know this med was not the issue. It was terrible for him, and I would not recommend this drug to anyone."

"I was given this medicine in the ER for a horrible headache 2 years ago. My heart rate instantly shot up to 150, and I couldn't sit still. I wanted to rip my IV out. They pumped me full of Ativan to try and get me to calm down. My legs and toes started moving on their own, and they kept me in the hospital for 3 days!!! I now am plagued with horrible panic attacks, and my toes still move on their own. Never take this drug!"

"I was given the IV 'migraine cocktail' also when in the ER for a severe migraine. The nurse told me the Benadryl could make my chest feel heavy and possibly anxious. Benadryl was pushed slowly via IV, and I started feeling relaxed and sleepy. THEN came the Reglan! After the Reglan was administered, my relaxed, sleepy state reversed, and I felt like I wanted to rip the IV out of my arm. I felt so hot, like I was boiling from the inside out. I was so nauseous, my heart rate went way up. I was in full panic mode, feeling like I made a huge mistake!!! I told my husband to get the nurse, and when he finally found him, he did nothing for me except tell me to calm down! Ugh... Never again will I put myself through that. Reglan... NO THANKS!"

Metoclopramide "This drug needs to be removed from the market. I experienced a concussion and was administered this medication intravenously in the emergency room for migraine and nausea. Immediately after receiving the drug, I felt dizzy and as though I was going to faint. Within minutes, my heart rate skyrocketed to 190 bpm, and I had the worst panic attack I have ever experienced, and I am a combat veteran. My entire body began shaking uncontrollably, and all of my muscles clenched up tightly. This continued for around 45 minutes. The medical staff provided Benadryl to 'reduce' the side effects, and the doctor informed me that 'those side effects are normal.' Are you kidding me? They did not even ask whether I had a history of anxiety or mental illness. Unfortunately, I suffer from anxiety disorder and PTSD, and this experience triggered a significant PTSD episode with crippling anxiety that persisted for over two months after taking this medication. If you have pre-existing anxiety, avoid this medication."
