For Type 2 Diabetes "I've found this to be the best diabetes medicine I've used. In the extended-release version, it provides consistent and significant reduction of blood sugar readings. My A1C dropped two full points with this medicine alone."

For Type 2 Diabetes "In general, my glucose control was better, but I was getting hypoglycemic during the day, especially after exercising, both manifested by shakiness, sweating, desperate need for a snack, and empty-headedness. Started bringing my glucose testing kit everywhere with me and found my glucose as low as 54 at the times I checked it. Sometimes I was too shaky to test; fortunately, my gym had hard candy, which I hate but had to take. I had been on 5 mg twice daily along with Metformin 1000 mg long-acting in the evening. Turns out the geriatric dose can be 2.5 mg before breakfast. I may try that since my glucoses are 140-150 off of glipizide despite exercise and a mostly plant-based diet, whereas it had been 104-116 on it (but hypoglycemia intolerable)."

For Type 2 Diabetes "I'm male, 52, and have been a diabetic for 11 years. For eight of those years, I was prescribed glipizide, and it worked very well for me in keeping my glucose levels under control. The only adverse side effect that I experienced was sensitivity to the sun and to my computer screen. Sunscreen lotion with SPF 30 protection solved that problem. A new PCP tried to switch me to metformin, but I was intolerant to that medicine (bloating and diarrhea)."

For Type 2 Diabetes "After having a severe reaction to Metformin, the doctor put me on Glipizide. While I don't faint on this medication, the side effects have been horrible for me. My sugar does seem to be better after being high for so long, it's finally below 160 most of the time. However, I am severely dizzy and foggy-headed constantly, to the point I stopped driving. I also have a bad lower backache, nausea, and stomach upset any time I eat, blurry vision (I have perfect vision, so this bothers me), and I've noticed some changes in my emotional response to things as well, such as anger and a bit of depression - which I've never had. The effects have been bad enough that I've had to take off work several days in a row as well as miss school."

For Type 2 Diabetes "Diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes two years ago. My A1C was 11.9, and 850 mg of Metformin was prescribed, which worked OK. Two weeks later, blood sugars were 155. Fast forward 20 months, blood sugars rocketed to 300, then one night 500! Doctor says to try 1000 mg of Metformin, and I'm down to 300. New doctor. Tried Glipizide, one week, blood sugars were 170, then 135, now 105!"

For Type 2 Diabetes "Was at the doctor yesterday because my sugars are wacky, so the doc put me on Metformin 500 mg, take 2 in the morning and 2 at night. Also on Glipizide 10 mg, 2 in the morning and 2 at night. I have the diabetes diarrhea too, off and on, and it is stressful going somewhere and having to find a bathroom. I would have preferred the doctor to put me on insulin since I have to also take dozens of other meds. This is so depressing."

For Type 2 Diabetes "Within a few days of starting on a daily dose of 5 mg, I began having gas to the point that it was embarrassing and had trouble falling asleep every night. Gave up on glipizide after a month and focused on eating better and getting more exercise instead."

For Type 2 Diabetes "I was put on glipizide because the tier for Victoza changed, and it cost $400.00. Since being on glipizide, my blood sugar would drop after an hour of taking it, even when I take it with food. I didn't like the way I felt, and if I had to leave the house, I wouldn't take it at all. I went back to using the Victoza I had left, and I felt much better. I am now out of Victoza, but I refuse to go back to glipizide. I'll try diet and exercise to lower my A1c."

For Type 2 Diabetes "I am a 34-year-old male. Diagnosed with Type 2 in April of 2016. Beginning A1C was 8.4. After a horrible start on Metformin (gastrointestinal issues), I was put on Farxiga 5 mg. Using that alone brought me down to a 7.6 in August of 2016. My doctor upped the Farxiga to 10 mg. That only brought me down to a 7.5 in April 2017. My doctor added Glipizide 2.5 mg XL once a day with the Farxiga. It brought my A1C down to a 6.0 in August 2017. The drug combo of these two is working very well for me. The Glipizide has given me that extra kick to get things under control."

For Type 2 Diabetes "I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes 1.5 months ago. My A1C was 15.8, urine glucose over 500 (test max), and my first home blood glucose test was 577. My doctor had me start with one metformin 500 mg ER tablet a day for the first week, then two a day since then. I also was prescribed a 5 mg tablet of glipizide a day. My blood glucose has been in the 85-150 range the past month. I have modified my diet some. I did experience some diarrhea, though I am over it now."

For Type 2 Diabetes "I just started using glipizide 5 mg 3 weeks ago in combination with metformin 1000 mg twice a day. It is a powerful medicine, as I noticed my sugar was 300, and 3 hours later, it was down to 100. My body was shaking, and my stomach was not feeling well. I was told to take medication and eat 30 minutes later, and then take metformin after the meal. Since my numbers didn't go much over 150, the doctor said we didn't need to up to the 10 mg a day she thought I would need after the 3 weeks. I was avoiding insulin and was prescribed glipizide, I realize I must start doing it without it. Just use one medication, or my stomach will suffer. I had a belly ache and later had to go to the toilet. I also have headaches and need more lotion since I am itchier."

For Type 2 Diabetes "I was on a sliding scale of Novolog and then Tresiba at night. Then I was also on Actos 30 mg. Since Actos is a blacklist medication and can cause bladder cancer, I decided to try Glipizide 5 mg. Well—for the first week, I could only take 1/2 of the 5 mg. So the doctor said take 2.5 (half the pill). I couldn’t sleep at night, up checking my blood sugar because even the 2.5 plummeted my blood sugar, and I felt I had no control once I took the pills. It made me feel so bad with excitement, nervousness, and pain down my left arm. I do work out, so this medication was too dangerous for me as I live alone and these episodes were scary! I felt so bad. Took my last 2.5 and can’t wait until this medication is out of my body. Still have residual. I’m back to my regime of sliding scale. I’m done."

Glipizide for Type 2 Diabetes "I've used it for a couple of years. It has brought down my A1C. It really highlighted my bad eating habits, though. I tend to go long periods without eating. Doing that with Glucotrol leads to hypoglycemia. I end up with hypoglycemia pretty often. But that is from my own bad habits, especially while I am in school. I am getting to the point of having to write 4 papers a semester, and that is just going to get worse as papers are required to have more content. I intend to talk to my doctor about the new Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists and Sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, especially the GLP-1 receptor agonists. They supposedly slow down the emptying of the stomach. I see food I just ate a couple of hours earlier in my stool. That is way too fast."

For Type 2 Diabetes "For the last 13 years, I take Metformin twice a day, but recently it doesn't work well and HbA1C is 8.1, so my doc switched to glipizide 5 mg once a day in the morning. Now my HbA1C has gone down to 5.8 with diet control and regular exercise 5-6 days."

For Type 2 Diabetes "Been on glipizide ER 2.5 for about 9 months. In the beginning, it helped, sugar was 100-118, but the side effects were very bad. Every bone, joint, muscle in my body hurt. I have other health issues, uncontrolled B/P, and this medication just made that worse. Stopped taking glipizide, and the pains went away. When the pain started, my sugar started to go to 160-189. Not a good medicine if you are on other medication. Drs don’t know everything, and everyone is different, and Drs need to understand this."

For Type 2 Diabetes "Type 2 since 2008 and started on metformin with great results. Over the years, the metformin has been progressively increased to the max dose to maintain my A1c at <7. Metformin has now lost its effect, and my last A1c was 10.1. Doctor discontinued the metformin and started Januvia 100 mg and Glucotrol XL 2.5 mg, gradually increasing to 20 mg/day. Nothing! The new combo has had absolutely no effect on my blood glucose levels. My FBS are >170 every morning and 2 hr PP around 240! My next drug is the non-insulin injectable, Victoza. I so wish it could be different."

For Type 2 Diabetes "With Metformin, I had terrible kidney pain immediately as well as diarrhea. Have been taking Glipizide for 9 years, first 2.5 then after 5 years 5mg. BS runs about 112 and A1C 6.7. Beginning to have some early morning tremors and occasional shakes. Not sure if it's the Glipizide or not, so I'm researching new inexpensive drugs. I find some of these reviews downright scary! Not to mention expensive. I actually would recommend Glipizide."

For Type 2 Diabetes "At 79 years old, I have had Type II for 25 years. For years, I had loose stools with metformin but was never told that metformin may be the problem. My former doctors slowly reduced the dosage from 2000 mg daily down to 500 mg daily. The loose stool problem got better but my A1c kept slowly increasing. My new doctor put me on 10 mg daily glipizide and weekly Trulicity. The results were remarkable and quick. No more loose stools, but more importantly, my A1c reduced from 8.1 to 6.7 in three months and then down to 6.2 in six months. I call glipizide my miracle drug."

For Type 2 Diabetes "Works very well in lowering glucose levels; however, significant side effects. Substantial weight gain regardless of diet/exercise, stomach pain, nausea, bloating, burning/tingling sensation in hands/feet, all of which remit when the drug is stopped. I give a rating of 5 due to fantastic effectiveness at lowering glucose, but the side effects can be substantial."

For Type 2 Diabetes "This seems to be a good drug. I take 10 mg tablets twice daily along with metformin 1000 mg in the morning and 500 mg in the evening. I am running 78, and my morning BP reading is 150/85, and I am satisfied and feel comfortable."

For Type 2 Diabetes "I have been on metformin for a few years. Blood sugar was not as it should be, so I was put on glipizide a year ago. I was put in the hospital due to asthma, they found I had very low sodium levels. My sodium levels have continued to fall and are now 125. I was taken off glipizide, and so far, sodium levels are increasing to 128. Not normal, but at least I have hope. I have had horrid pain in my legs and back. At times, I stumble, and this all started when I went on glipizide. I used to walk over 10,000 steps a day, now my feet and my legs hurt so badly I can't walk any distance at all."

For Type 2 Diabetes "I take a glipizide/metformin combo and have no stomach problems on it. It does quickly lower blood sugar sometimes to hyperglycemia numbers. I was on Glumetza, a metformin HCl, coated tablet, non-generic, very expensive, almost $170.00 per month, which had no gastric side effects because it is made by a company that specializes in gastro medication."

For Type 2 Diabetes "I have been a Type 2 diabetic since 2007. I take Glipizide, which is very effective at keeping my blood sugar levels down. But every day it gives me an upset stomach and diarrhea, which has me miserable. Just yesterday, I had to stop what I was doing and rush home to the toilet. Horrible! Just imagine having terrible stomach pains and diarrhea every day! It wasn’t until recently that I realized this was a side effect of the Glipizide. I thought it was from foods containing gluten that I have been eating. I had tried Metformin, and that is just as bad. I’m in the process of asking my doctor if there is something else I can take that won’t upset my stomach so much. Right now, I’m in between jobs but need to get back to work! It’s hard to"

For Type 2 Diabetes "I have been on Juniva and Metformin for years. It has kept my weight and sugar levels between 91-135. For some reason, my doctor decided to take me off that medication and put me on glipizide. In one month, I had gained 15 pounds, and my blood sugars were in the high 100s to low 200s. After two months, she decided to switch me back on to Juniva. A bit late, I think. My blood sugar is now up into the 300s, and I have packed on another 15 lbs. The glipizide ruined my blood sugars, and an extra bonus, it made me gain weight. DO NOT TAKE GLIPIZIDE FOR A FIRST, SECOND, OR THIRD CHOICE. TRY EVERYTHING ELSE FIRST!!!! There's no out-of-pocket experience, but you pay dearly with your health."
