"Starting taking this bc after norethindrone was making me feel "empty" inside and I honestly did not like it. I'm a healthy 28 year old who doesn't smoke or drink and it caused me to constantly feel nauseous that's the main reason I decided to switch to something else and even when I would take it at 10pm I was still nauseous all day, I started breaking out a lot but my skin would clear up completely once I would take the inactive pills, I was also extremely hungry all the time and once I would start the inactive pills I would have my usual apetite back again. PROS: my period was lighter. I gave the birth control 3 months just to see if the side effects would go away but they did not..had my doctor switch me to a lower dose bc."

"I have been on Mononessa for 2 months and I realize that everyone is different but I think I have suffered almost every side effect in the book while being on this pill. First it started with bloating, I have been extremely tired, to the point where its hard for me to get off the couch midday. Have had a lot less energy, an out break of acne on my back, which is strange because hormonal bc is supposed to help with that. Dropped my sex drive significantly, but the hardest thing to manage is obsession with food; the amount I'm eating, binge eating, and craving high fats, carbs and sugars. I'm feeling depressed, I don't know if its because of all the symptoms or if its a chemical imbalance. Needless to say I'm going to the Dr.'s and switching."

"I really wanted to keep using these, but I am up right now at 6 am because the nausea woke me up from my sleep and I’ve been vomiting since 5 am. I’ve been on these for a month and a week. I’ve never experienced such bad nausea as with these pills. I’ve been vomiting every single day. Unfortunately, I’m making the decision to discontinue today."

"I was on mononessa right out of high school for about 2.5 years. In the beginning, my symptoms were mild; sore breasts, nausea, (when I doubled up on pills or took the pills during the day, instead of at night), occasional head aches. Eventually my symptoms worsened, I developed debilitating anxiety, severe depression, and mood swings. Mononessa completely changed who I was, it almost ruined my relationship, it ruined my grades, and it made me feel hopeless. Within two weeks of quitting, I felt like the dark cloud that had been following me for years has finally cleared. I feel amazing now."

"After trying five other birth controls including trinessa, I moved to mononessa in order to skip my periods. I didn’t gain weight, I didn’t have skin/acne changes, I didn’t have sex drive changes and I do not feel like I’m crazy like when I was on trinessa. After five years of mononessa, my body began to breakthrough bleed when trying to skip periods. I tried seasonique which is made to only have four periods a year and my skin went nuts!!!! Super oily skin and what not. Just went back to mononessa... will never switch to anything else and would recommend it to anyone!"

"I started mononessa due to extreme period pains about 3 years ago. It works really well for me. I have had no spotting and my cycle has been relatively normal. When I get to the 7 placebos, it takes about 3 days for my actual period to start. When I start taking the pills again it stops my period within a day or two but leaves me with heavy discharge. I have had no abnormal issues since starting mononessa. It works well with Vraylar."

"This was my first birth control. The first few weeks I got horrible nausea, I felt overly emotional, and tired. I figured that was normal for my body to be getting used to the drug. Once that was over I had no complaints. My acne cleared, and I had no other symptoms. But now, I've been on it for almost a year and suddenly I'm getting those symptoms again. I wake up in the middle of the night with nausea, I feel extremely anxious, I even am having strange vivid dreams. I will be changing to a different birth control."

"I have been on this birth control for just over a year now and I love it. It is the first pill I've ever tried and it works great for me. I had a little nausea when I first began taking them, but it went away after a month or so. The only negative thing I have noticed is sometimes at the beginning of a new pill pack, I lose my appetite for about a week. I have gained about 5 pounds in the past year. I have no complaints other than that though. I take my pill at the exact same time every day religiously and have never missed a pill, and I have not gotten pregnant. Also, I am able to determine exactly what days I am going to be on my period now which is so nice. It's been a great birth control for me!"

"THIS WAS AWFUL! On the fourth month of use, I experienced extreme anxiety and depression. I had to go see a therapist to calm down. It made me not want to get out of bed, or do things I love. I just stopped taking this birth control, so hopefully I will feel better again"

"Everybody's body absorbs differently. My body did not like Mononessa at all. I only lasted 3 days of this pill. I had an insane reaction, my doctor even told me she's never heard anything like it. My body had an insane panic attack as I was puking. My fingers and toes started to tighten and I could not move them, I had partial paralysis in my fingers and toes! I was crying and rocking back and forth. I never want to experience anything like it again. My body would wake me up every morning at 4:00AM to do this every time I took the pill. I was switched to the Yaz pill which was amazing! After the 4th year of taking it, my body got used to Yaz and now I am experiencing a lot of mood swings and my sex drive decreasing! Microgestin here I come!"

"Honestly, I know it's hard for anyone with a mood disorder to take hormone-related birth control, but this was the worst experience I ever had. I have moderate anxiety disorder, and after a week of being on this pill, I had severe panic attacks. Worse than I've ever had them. I couldn't control myself and was shaking and extremely dizzy and it felt as if the world was going to end. I always get sick after anxiety attacks but that one was the worst. I couldn't eat for a day or two. I know different medications work differently for everyone, but that by far was the worst reaction I've gotten. Going to try non hormonal from now on."

"This pill was fine for the first three months that I was on it, then I started constantly spotting. I only had 3-4 days a month that I was not spotting while on this med. I was switched to Lo Loesterin and the spotting has stopped."

"So far so good! I switched from Lo Loestrin Fe. I was liking the lo-fe the first 3 months, 3 day periods was amazing. Then months 4-6 I had spotting, break through bleeding, and cramps, sometimes crazy discharge sometimes I was super dry, terrible mood swings, etc.) Anyways, I switched to this because it contained more estrogen and ever since January I've felt loads better. I don't see any difference in weight, appetite, or sleep. I have seen an improvement in my mood and concentration/focus since switching to this pill, I feel balanced. My period does last 5 days but my cramps aren't as bad nor is my period nearly as heavy as when I wasn't on birth control. 9/10 because I still use condoms and haven't really tested it 100%"

"I love this pill and I'm surprised it has so many poor reviews on this website, but I guess it really goes to show you that it's all about finding a form of birth control that works for you. For me, Mononessa is just that. PROS: Cheap (I only pay about $10/month, but I was getting it free for a while) with no negative emotional or mental effects (I find this pill actually increases my mood!). I used to have extremely painful cramps on the first two days of my period, but that pain has dramatically decreased since taking this pill. Lingering acne on my face has also vanished. CONS: Occasional light spotting with a small breakout a week or so before period. I have gained a few extra pounds, but I've managed most of it with diet and exercise."

"I've been on this birth control since I was 16. I am 20 now and starting to wonder about other forms of birth control. Its not a bad pill, but its not great either. It makes my period slightly lighter and I haven't had any pregnancy scares with it, but I really don't like the way it makes me feel. Terrible cravings, bloating, headaches, etc."

"I've been on this pill since October. My reasoning for going on birth control was due to my irregular periods. I've had many side effects such as the nausea or throwing up. If I take my pill late that night & wake up for school the next morning it's a given I'll throw up. If I accidentally forget to take a pill one night and take two the next night I ALWAYS throw up. The sickness has made me have 4 absentees from school. Besides the puking, it has made my periods regular! It is so nice to know when the flow is on its way!"

"Mononessa has been my birth control for 2 years now. I have never had a single problem with these particular pills. I have had no mood swings, weight loss/gain, nausea, etc. I feel the same exact way as I did before taking birth control... just protected! I am very strict on myself with taking it at the same time every night. I set an alarm on my phone and take it at the same time every night. I have never had any problems with the pill. I really recommend trying to see if it works the same way as it has for me."

"Went on the pill to clear my skin. I'm in the middle of my 2nd pack. I've been on other acne-focused pills which are supposed to get worse before better so I'm used to waiting it out. But, this pill is not worth it. I'm breaking out in places I never have before and wake up every morning with new white heads and black heads. The entire first month I was slightly nauseous all day and extremely tired, sore throat, and head ache. I also got very hungry at night, just figured I'd push through and all the symptoms went away after a month except the acne. It just got worse and I noticed when I was on the placebo pills, my face cleared a little. Now I need to visit a derm and most likely spend lots of money getting chemical peels and nice masks."

"Been taking it for just 1 month, I had to change my other birth control because of mood swings and acne. Monosessa is better but still not perfect. My acne got better and my mood swings are better but I'm always hungry now and weirdly enough I smell differently and I sweat more than usual. But I mean that's better than the other birth control."

"I've been taking Mononessa for about a week now, so my opinion probably doesn't mean much yet. My period was still bad the first day or two, but then it got very light, to wear I barely felt like I was even on it. I do get the "sick to my stomach" feeling a little in the evenings, but it's not terrible and I haven't thrown up. Yesterday and today I have had a constant headache, which I'm assuming is coming from the pills becsude I don't get frequent headaches. I had a little bit of breakouts on my chin, and it has gone away already, but that could also be attributed to just the fact that pimples go away with time. I haven't had sex yet, so I'm not sure about whether or not my intimate relationship will change."

"TERRIBLE. I have PCOS and endometriosis, this is the third birth control I’ve tried and by far the worst. I’ve been on it for two packs now, my doctor wouldn’t let me be off of it after the first month. She wanted me to stick it out to see if my body would adapt to it and it hasn’t at all. I have extremely heavy periods, which is saying a lot because I’ve always had super heavy periods naturally. Now it’s like something out of a horror movie. I get extremely nauseous and have migraine headaches frequently. On top of all this I’ve been having problems with anxiety and depression, which I’ve never had before. This pill is toxic for me. Don’t take it."

"Mononessa was my first contraceptive. The first month was terrible. I was always nauseous and I would get super hungry but not able to eat due to the nausea. I had my period for around 4-5 days. It was light with minimum cramps. Month 2, my nausea started to go away and libido went up. Month 3, breasts grew and acne was gone. Never any mood changes, but weight gain of 5-10 pounds. I used it for about a year and went off of it because I stopped taking my pill on time. I switched to 3 different contraceptives until I went back to Mononessa. I used it for ~2 more years. About 10 months ago, I started having break through bleeding for about 2–3 weeks during my cycle and it just wouldn’t stop. I had a bunch of imaging done for the abnormal bleeding and all results pointed to everything being ok. I think my body has just changed or something but I am retiring from this pill because of the bleeding. It was still, nonetheless, an amazing run though while I was on it. PS never got pregnant!"

"I took this for about a month and my body took it very well. The only downside was that I was nauseous after I'd take it to the point where I couldn’t function and I’d have to lay down in order to settle myself. I had light periods before and they did get heavier but that’s no big deal since they weren’t horrible. Overall, it’s a fair medication and I don’t see many things wrong with it"

"Mononessa pill was a colossal waste of my time. I was prescribed this because I have low estrogen/have a really irregular period and my doctor was concerned that it would effect my bones and put me at risk for osteoporosis. The first day of taking the pill, my stomach cramped and I felt nauseas and bloated. Totally unlike me. This lasted each day around the time I took the pill. My skin started to break out around day 4 on my forehead, somewhere I haven’t gotten a pimple in 4 months. I knew something was off. I got small whiteheads around my mouth too. My body is completely rejecting this pill so I stopped. Looking into ways to raise my estrogen naturally"

"I took the Mononessa for about 3 years. I noticed little to no hormonal break outside, which was a plus. I did gain a lot of weight over those years, including 20 lbs in one year, but about 40 lbs overall which may partially be due to the medication. I was advised to take the pills every day with no sugar pills in between, or just three days of sugar pills. I took them every day and had no periods but sometimes there was spotting. My skin got very dry and I became concerned about fine lines. My hair has thinned a lot in the last 4-5 years, partially due to using Wen (hair product), but after discontinuing wen, I still lose a lot and I'm waiting to see significant regrowth several years later which I feel is due to the hormones. I stopped taking any pills about 3 months ago and already lost about 7-10lbs with little change in lifestyle. Everyone seems to react differently with these."
