"I started Lutera mainly for birth control purposes. I have been on it for about 4 months, and I hate it. At first, I noticed I was acting slightly different, even my best friend mentioned it, but I thought it was just my body getting used to the pill, and I would go back to normal soon. Since then, I feel as if I am not the same person anymore. I have become increasingly moody, emotional, snappy, needy, dependent, grumpy, and have no patience. I have begun to push my friends away and broken up with my boyfriend. I feel like I cannot enjoy small situations or even a little bit of stress. I made an appointment and plan to talk to my doctor tomorrow about getting an alternate pill or coming off of it altogether."

"I was on the Aviane equivalent for a year, and it was fine. My insurance switched me to this. Now, for the past four months, I’ve become depressed, angry, and irrational. My periods have become altogether 10x worse on all accounts, including migraines, weight gain, emotional breakdowns, horrible cramps and backaches, and heavy bleeding. Stopped taking it for two weeks and feel so much better already. Beware this pill! Made me crazy :("

"I have been on Lutera for 3 months now, and I'm gaining so much weight! The weight gain makes me sad. This pill makes me feel so lazy and emotional. My skin is better than normal, though. Plus I'm not pregnant!"

"I was on Lutera from October 2011 to October 2013, and it was amazing. My periods were on time every month, I had no severe cramping, my mood swings died down a lot, and it protected me. In the 2 years I took Lutera every day, and it was the best birth control I ever took. No weight gain, no acne, it was perfect. Unfortunately, I had to stop taking it as I didn't have enough money to afford another year's worth of birth control. Three months later, I found out I was pregnant with my son, who is now 5 months old! My OBGYN prescribed me Microgestin Fe 1.5/20 BC, and I'm trying to switch back to it. Lutera is the birth control I know that worked for me."

"I just renewed my prescription today, so I have been on Lutera for a year. I consider myself a low-maintenance person, and Lutera fits well into keeping me that way. I have not noticed barely anything changing while I am on it, except I went up a cup size. I don't necessarily like that, but my periods are normal, and it has worked to prevent pregnancy. I take it at 10 pm every night. I don't have any complaints and have been truly satisfied with the results, especially because my insurance covers the cost 100%."

"I’ve been on Lutera for about 2 years and did not have issues with it. I noticed that my periods became lighter, shorter, and less painful. One thing that I realized was that a week before my period, I would get really sad and depressed, and my mood was just not it. I also noticed weight gain, but that might have been with the pandemic; not sure on that one yet. A major thing for me was that before I was on birth control, I was not the type to burp; after getting on it, I started burping a lot more. So, more gas. I am thinking of getting off of it because of the lack of good mood."

"I'm 17, so this applies more to teens. I was on the DEPO shot. I had horrible effects, would tell anyone and everyone to stay away. So after my 9 months on it, I had a 2-month-long period, incredible pains and mood swings, and it was all too much. I came off and went on Lutera. It's been 3 weeks. I put on about 5 pounds, but so far I've been working out and dropping it! The weight gain is fast, and I'm finding it easy to get rid of! My moods are much more stable, which is amazing because it really makes a difference if you are in a relationship. So far I would recommend it."

"Wow, this birth control was awful. I was on it for about 4 months and gained about 10 lbs. Worst of all, it gave me depression and bouts of really dark thoughts. It was gradual, so I didn't even know it was because of the pills. Luckily, my boyfriend made me stop taking them, and I felt better within 3 days. If you're taking this, please be careful!"

"Lutera is a great birth control in terms of no moodiness or other severe side effects. My boobs did get bigger and did gain some weight (healthy weight around my hips and butt), but my acne did not clear up. I also broke out in hives throughout the four months I have been taking it."

"I am 17 years old, 5'1" and 125 pounds when I was originally 105 lbs. I started taking Lutera almost exactly 1 year ago. It was my first birth control, and the reason I was getting it was because my periods were horrible. There would be days I couldn't go to school because I had to change my pad every couple of minutes. Also, I planned on being sexually active once it started kicking in. I became sexually active about 3 or 4 months later, and it is great with protection. I gained a LOT of weight. I expected to, but not this much. It's made me have very low self-esteem. ALSO, I don't know if it's just me or the pill, but even though I have been sexually active, it's impossible to have an orgasm. I want to switch because of the weight gain, but I'm too scared."

"To me, it has been working for around 7 years. I love it. Although I have been a constant birth control user for over 10 years, I have never had kids or been pregnant, so I'm 30 now. I have stopped taking it to avoid any future complications due to general birth control issues. Before I started taking it, I tried many, and Lutera has been the best working for me. I highly recommend it."

"Since I've been on this pill, my periods are lighter and last 3 to 4 days. Before Lutera, I would get horrible cramps, and now my cramps don't bother me as much. When I first took the pill, of course, there were some side effects, but nothing severe, your body just needs some time to adjust to it. I've been on this pill since I was 17, now 22 years old so far. No problems with it, and I continue to take it every day at the same time."

"I just started this pill a week ago, so far, it has increased my appetite. I love it! Since I rapidly lost weight this summer due to depression, I'm no longer depressed, and my sex drive increased. Plus, I have a fast metabolism, so it's perfect so far. Good luck!!!"

"I've been on Lutera non-stop for about 5 years. Pros: Never had any noticeable weight gains, acne, mood swings, cramping, or any other side effects that would be linked to the pills. Also, no pregnancies, which is kind of the whole point! Cons: Within the past year or two, I've noticed a big decrease in sex drive. Also, stopped taking it for a week or two recently (was on antibiotics), and my next period was medium flow for almost two weeks. Noticed my PMS kicked in big time when I took that time off."

"I have used Lutera for 13 years. I'm sexually active and have never been pregnant while taking this pill. I'm currently 42 and have been told that I'm still safe to take it. It's a low-dose combo pill that is safe to use for women who aren't high risk for side effects from using oral contraceptives (refer to your physician). I have had no side effects from this pill. I get the normal PMS syndromes I have always had (since I was a teen before I even went on BC), like breast tenderness and occasional cramping, but overall it has been very effective with no other side effects."

"I started taking Lutera because I have horrible pain and insane cramps, hot flashes, etc., on my period. I could've taken a pain killer, but I chose I could just go on birth control again. I used to be on Ortho Tri-Cyclen Lo. This was a low dose of Lutera they told me, so I said ok. It worked as far as birth control and took my cramps and pain away right away, which was a plus. On my 4th pack, I started noticing I had very bad anxiety, I was sweating in my sleep, feeling zoned out after a full night's sleep. I hated how it made me feel. So, I stopped taking it. After 3 days of stopping, I started having light brown discharge and horrible cramps. The longer I've been off it now for a week, the worse it is: heavier discharge, headaches, body hurts, and I have bleeding."

"I just want to review this birth control because I know people are more likely to hop on the interweb to write negative reviews rather than positive ones. I had the Mirena for almost five years, and all of a sudden, CRAZY ACNE started. I wanted a BC pill to help with it, and I was given Lutera. PROS: After the first few weeks, I didn't break out nearly as bad as I was before taking it. Regulated period after the second month. My boobs! They're bigger! CONS: Acne was worse the first couple of weeks. First period was gross. Brown, and it came before the off week. Give it a chance, I'm on my tenth week. You need to give it a few months before deciding you hate it! It takes a while to regulate everything."

"Before I was on Lutera, I was on Lo Loestrin FE (which was awful! I would bleed literally two weeks out of the month, had no sex drive, and gained 10 lbs). After switching to Lutera, which I have been on for a month now, my mood swings have been consistent (even though I cried when a dog commercial came on). I have actually lost weight, there is no breakthrough bleeding, and my sex drive is back to normal, and this is covered 100% by my insurance. Also, no bad side effects such as acne, stomach pain, or severe discomfort in any form. The only thing is my boobs swell up a little bit, but no complaints there. This is such a great pill! I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to start a new BC or wanting to switch."

"Had no problems at all while on this pill. Lost weight, periods were lighter, skin got better, didn't get pregnant. The only reason I'm stopping is because I'm getting the implant now, but if that doesn't work out, I'm definitely going back to this pill! I highly recommend it."

"So far, it's been over 2 weeks on Lutera, and I like it. I only had a headache and was slightly nauseous on the first day of taking the pill, and after that, I was fine. My skin is clear (I didn't have acne before either, though), I have no mood swings and no spotting. My energy level is the same as before I took the pill. I have no weight gain either. Overall, I am very pleased with this pill. In the past, I have taken Orthotricyclen, and it made me slightly nauseous, and I had some light spotting if I took a pill later than usual. I hope this review helps someone. Just keep in mind everyone is different, and their body reacts differently to BC pills."

"I've been on it for about 4 months. I do get nauseous taking it. My appetite seems to have decreased, but I've gained a lot of weight on it. I do get headaches more often, and for some reason, I get constipated as well."

"I’ve taken Lutera throughout high school and still to this day, and it works fine for me. When I tried a different birth control (APRI), it made me gain so much weight. I went back on Lutera. I don’t break out, I didn’t gain weight, and I’m not sure about the mood swings because I think that’s just how I am, lol."

"I really liked this birth control and wanted to continue using it, but after 3 months, it started causing big zits on my chin around the time of my period, so I stopped. Other than that, no other bad side effects that I noticed."

"As a disclaimer, I have not taken birth control for over ten years. That said, I decided it would be the right choice with a new partner in tow. The first week I started Lutera, I experienced dryness around my lips. As I entered week two, I began experiencing dryness around the labia. The change in hormones affected me adversely as I became irritable and anxious for no reason apparent. It became very clear the pill was thinning the walls of my vagina and natural lubrication disappeared when I had normal intercourse with my partner, and I was torn inside. I experienced quite a bit of tearing and consequent bleeding from those rips. I remained on the pill for a full month. My lips progressively became more dry and cracked."

"My doctor prescribed me Lutera since I am new to birth control. One major thing is that you really need to set a reminder (on phone, alarm clock, anything) because it is pretty easy to forget about it. I've been on the pill for about 9 months, and it's pretty good. Small things include: weight change (decreased - also my change in diet, I think), more acne than before I was on this pill, slim to no mood swings, slight spotting between periods, and definitely lighter periods. I wouldn't say shorter but definitely lighter. Overall, pretty good product for a first-time user. Just make sure you set an alarm, it also comes in a green sturdy pack, so I guess you can find it if you put clothes or books over it, and it's peeking out."
