"Since pills work differently depending on the individual, I think it's important to know a little about the person reviewing. I'm 5'1 Asian 105 lbs. Lutera is the second birth control pill I've tried, before was Beyaz. I do like Lutera better, as Beyaz was depressing. I've been taking Lutera for 4 months now. I have noticed a difference with my period timing. It would come earlier than the average 28 day cycle, but would only last 3-4 days. These past two months, it has only lasted 3 days. The pill seems REALLY effective, considering sometimes I forget to take my pill at the designated time. NO difference in acne for me."

"I have taken Lutera for about two years. I used to have awful period cramps, since I started this pill I haven't had any. I don't even remember what they feel like. Periods are super mild, I barley need anything. I never have acne. I have a breakout here and there, but that's life. My only complaint is that I gained weight. It makes me hungry constantly. I gained 10 lbs in two years. I could of kept off the weight if I watched what I ate and exercised more. Overall great pill. It's also very effective."

"The pill worked great at preventing babies, but it did make me extremely tired all the time. Plus it made me super emotional, crying about the littlest of things to being angry about everything. It also made my skin break out really bad."

"I started Lutera about 2 weeks ago, and the only side effects I have noticed is slight tenderness and swelling of my breasts (not really a problem) and occasional mood swings, (which are easy to control if your aware you are having mood swings). At first it was difficult remembering to take the pill, but I set an alarm on my cell to remind me. I set it for a time when I'm usually awake, and not busy. The pill however like any other birth control will cause slight weight gain, so it's wise to cut back on the amount of calories you consume while on this pill. It does not stop your period either, well at least not for me. My menstrual periods are much shorter, and somewhat lighter, but still there. Also, I've noticed occasional, slight cramping."

"I have been on this Birth Control pill for 2 years now. I have not had ANY trouble with it ever and really was happy with it. I've heard my girlfriends talking about their birth control pills and how they have horrible side effects with them. I have always been happy with this pill and would recommend it to anyone!"

"I have been taking Lutera for a year. It has protected against pregnancy very well. My periods are much lighter and I almost never get cramps. I have missed 2 periods which was a little scary. I have gained about 8 pounds and I crave sweet foods even more than I used to. My breasts are slightly bigger. I feel tired if I don't get at least 10 hours of sleep. My sex drive is slightly lower. I do have a mood swing usually about once a month where I cry about anything and everything for 2 days. I have always felt more emotional right before my periods, but I did not cry as much before. I think I am going to switch birth control because of the weight gain. Other than that, the side effects do not bother me."

"I first started taking Lutera around the beginning of January. I noticed immediate mood swings within the first 2 weeks of taking it, I had a little trouble sleeping one night & literally started sobbing out of no where (mind you I'm not a very emotional person). It made me EXTREMELY depressed, & I only ever felt angry or sad, never happy, not to mention I felt very disconnected to my boyfriend who I am deeply in love with. I immediately got off of it during the third week. They say to stick it out the first 3 weeks at LEAST but I could not stay on it one more day. I immediately noticed the changes & I was back to my spunky positive self, thank god! ( :"

"I used Lutera for just about 3-4 months, and loved it. No real side effects, switched to it from Ortho tri Lo. Didn't seem so hungry after I made the switch. After about 3-4 months I switched to Nuva Ring for ease of use. Just now starting the ring, and if it goes poorly I would happily go back to Lutera."

"I love this birth control! I've been using Lutera for a month now. First time ever being on anything and at first I was very nauseous the first week taking it. I believe that was just my body getting used to it. I did spot after receiving my period. I've lost a total of 6 pounds in the first month and my breast have gotten slightly plumper. Haven't experienced any mood swings. I guess everything works differently for everyone."

"I am only on week 2 of Lutera and I am stopping it. I know you should wait for the first few cycles to really get a feel for it, however I cannot take the side effects anymore. Even after the first week in I felt weird. My mood was so weird I was all over the place. Crying for no reason, irrational thoughts, angry outbursts. Then I started having the weirdest cravings and nausea as bad as my morning sickness was. So bad that I went and bought a pregnancy test while I was spotting because I was convinced I was pregnant (negative). I haven’t been on it long enough to know if I would gain weight but I can already tell by the way my appetite has been I would have. Cramps and bloating with bleeding during week 2. BAD idea to use this form."

"Wow this birth control was awful. I was on it for about 4 months and gained about 10 lbs. Worst of all, it gave me depression and bouts of really dark thoughts. It was gradual so I didn't even know it was because of the pills. Luckily my boyfriend made me stop taking them and I felt better within 3 days. If you're taking this please be careful!"

"I've taken birth control, first when I was a teenager to control my periods, then to prevent pregnancy. I've had an IUD, it's a toss up on that one. I have one child and until I can save enough money for the permanent procedure, Lutera is what I'll use. It's effective, no weight gain, no mood swings. Felt a bit nauseous when I first started taking this but other than that I highly recommend it."

"I love Lutera. I am very sensitive to other forms of birth control. Lutera has been one of the only kinds I can take. Pros: light periods, no cramping, no intense side effects, bigger boobs. Cons: Brown periods, slight weight gain. I also tend to get a bit emotional 1 or 2 days before my period....however I am always an emotional person so this could just be me. I have been on Lutera for 6 years ☺"

"I have been on lutera for 8 months now and so far my experience has been great! My obgyn switched me from safyral to this because it was over $100 a month. But my periods are only 5 days long with a medium to light flow. I bled extremely heavy before ever on the pill. I have had no weight gain, actually lost 2 pants sizes, no unusual mood swings, breasts went down a cup size but seem perkier, and no babies. The only thing I have noticed is a little bit of breast tenderness before my period and I only get slightly moody at PMS time. It has been a good pill for me so far. Every woman is different, but I highly recommend this pill."

"I was so scared to go on birth control again after my horrendous experience with Loestrin Fe. I had mad rage, couldn't think clearly, emotional mess, and worst of all, acne, something I never experienced before. I knew after a week I liked it. Mostly because my moods since I've been on it have been fabulous. My breasts got huge too! I did feel slight nausea and a loss of appetite, but I'm not complaining. Slight headache and light spotting. This doesn't bother me because I was mostly concerned with my moods shifting. I haven't noticed my skin look any better but I've only been on it for 2 weeks."

"My doctor prescribed me Lutera since I am new to birth control. One major thing is that you really need to set a reminder(on phone, alarm clock, anything) because it is pretty easy to forget about it. I've been on the pill for about 9 months, and pretty good. Small things include: weight change (decreased-also my change in diet I think), more acne then before I was on this pill, slim to non mood-swings, slight spotting between periods, and definitely lighter periods. I wouldn't say shorter but definitely lighter. Overall pretty good product for a first time user. Just make sure you set an alarm, also comes in a green sturdy pack so I guess you can find it if you put clothes or books over it and it's peaking out."

"I started Lutera mainly for birth control purposes. I have been on it for about 4 months and I hate it. At first, I noticed I was acting slightly different, even my best friend mentioned it, but I thought it was just my body getting used to the pill and I would go back to normal soon. Since then, I feel as if I am not the same person anymore. I have become increasingly moody, emotional, snappy, needy, dependent, grumpy, and have no patience. I have begun to push my friends away and broken up with my boyfriend. I feel like I cannot enjoy small situations or even a little bit of stress. I made an appointment and plan to talk to my doctor tomorrow about getting an alternate pill or coming off of it altogether."

"My doctor prescribed Lutera for acne, which I was on for 3 months. My periods were lighter, but there was no improvement with my skin. What prompted me to write this review is how I believe it affected my mood. I started Lutera right before I moved overseas (stressful enough as it is). For these past 3 months I've been more anxious than I've ever been in my life. Constant tightness in my chest, nervous for no reason, overwhelmed, irritable, etc. The smallest things felt unmanageable and crushing. I assumed this was just the stress of moving so I tried to meditate and exercise but the anxiety was still there. About 2 weeks ago I ran out of pills. A few days after finishing the inactive pills I noticed the anxiety was gone. Nothing has changed in my life, but I feel lighter and completely normal, without constant stage-fright nervousness. I'd urge anyone who's feeling unlike their usual self to consider that the hormones may be hurting, not helping, their mood."

"I have taken 4 other birth controls. I am now in college and recently had to get the IUD taken out so my doctor prescribed me Lutera. It is THE WORST birth control EVER. Wish I did my research. I’m going on month 5 and I feel like a psycho girl. I get so angry at the smallest things, cry all of the time, have anxiety over everything and feel depression on the regular. You would be so surprised at how this pill can effect your moods for the absolute worse. I didn’t even realize. I am no longer taking it, I want my self back."

"I went on Lutera for two years. I got cysts in my boobs and my sex drive was completely gone. I had a normal period and sometimes get acne. I definitely stress a lot more and have a big sugar craving. I’m not sure if it was the birth control or the fact that I went off to college, but I gained around 10 pounds throughout the 2 years. I workout 5 times a week and would say my diet isn’t that bad. I would say Lutera isn’t the best for me, and I decided to switch to a new birth control. This was just my experience!"

"A couple years ago I took Lutera for a year and didn't have too many problems. I stopped taking it, then re-started 6 months ago. This time was bad. My mood was off - little things would make me super aggravated or want to cry, while "better" days made me extremely happy and hyper. Also had on-off dryness down there - pretty uncomfortable, esp. sex-wise. WORST part was the 2-week periods I got on this pill. For five months straight, I had my period for 1/2 the month, with cramps, lower back pain, irritability, and heavy bleeding. The gyno kept saying it was my body adjusting, but after the 5th month of this, I'm taking a break for birth control for a month and then switching to another pill."

"I'm 23 and I've been taking Lutera for 2.5 years now. At first it was great, I didn't have any side effects except for mood swings now and then. But after 2 years I've lost my sex drive almost completely and have a lot of trouble with natural lubrication. I also have really dry eyes. At least I haven't gotten pregnant, I have an alarm to let me know to take it so I have never missed a pill and have taken it within the same 10 minute time frame every day. Today I ordered the Skyla after talking it through with my doctor and I can't wait to not have to remember to take a pill anymore."

"I have been taking Lutera for 7 months now. The first 3 months I hard horrible, painful bloating every time I ate anything. That has subsided, but I have gained a lot of weight, my hair and finger nails are growing rapidly, but are very brittle, my acne has gotten worse, my breasts are larger and more tender, and I get frequent headaches. I have been on several other birth control pills and they all gave me insane mood swings. I don't seem to have that problem with this pill."

"BEWARE! I GOT PREGNANT ON LUTERA. I always have “perfect use” of birth control pills, aka I never miss a pill and have never even taken one late in my almost ten years of using different birth control pills. I switched to Lutera and followed all of the instructions about when to start and how long to use backup protection (confirmed with OBGYN I was doing it correctly too). Within three weeks, I got pregnant! Definitely NOT what I want from a birth control. OBGYN has no idea how it happened because I never got pregnant on any other pill and did everything right here. Very alarmed that this pill seems to be ineffective at the one thing it’s supposed to do!"

"Before I was on Lutera- I was on Lo Loestin FE (which was awful!- I would bleed literally two weeks out of the month, had no sex drive and gained 10 lbs). After switching to Lutera, which I have been on for a month now, my mood swings have been consistent (even though I cried when a dog commercial came on), I have actually lost weight, there is no break through bleeding, and my sex drive is back to normal, AND this is covered a 100% by my insurance. Also, no bad side effects such as acne, stomach pain, or severe discomfort in any form. The only thing is my boobs swell up a little bit, but no complaints there. This is such a great pill! I would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting to start a new BC or wanting to switch."
