"Sex became extremely painful after menopause, so much so that penis insertion was impossible! I thought I was done. My gyno suggested this and gave me some samples. I had started seeing somebody I really liked so had 'the talk' about pain. I know some others have had this talk too. He said it wasn't a problem and meant it but I wanted to try. A month later, penetration was achieved with only a slight amount of discomfort! In fact, I was so surprised that it took me a moment to register that Yes, that IS what I'm feeling. So far, everything is fine. I will never be the way I was, but I'm very satisfied with this medication."

"I am 57 years old and 3 weeks on low dose Vagifem 10 mcg - gained 5 kg and experienced a hypertensive crisis 200/100 blood pressure at its worst. My BP was completely normal beforehand. Spoke to GP who took me off straight away - really rare side effect but can be found in the small print. 4 days later, BP returned to normal, now 120/80. Watch your BP, girls. On the upside, had sex with minimal pain, which was fantastic, but guess what, can't take the drug. Talk about depressive!"

"I take antidepressants each morning as well as several combined sleeping tablets. Within a few days of using Vagifem l sank into deep depression, and by about 6 days l was almost suicidal! PLEASE, if you take antidepressants (I take Efexor xr), consider carefully using this product. It is an uncommon but serious side-effect for some!"

"Use of Vagifem to address bladder frequency has caused significant irritation, itchiness, and rawness around the vaginal area, as well as thick white discharge. I have discontinued it and am attempting to treat these symptoms, which have progressed to the urethra. Very discouraging, as many women find it very helpful for postmenopausal conditions."

"Started perimenopause in my late 30s and suffered extreme vaginal dryness, burning, painful intercourse, chronic UTIs and both uterine and bladder prolapse by 40 years old. Had a partial hysterectomy and bladder lift at 40 but still suffered the extreme vaginal dryness, burning, frequent urination, etc. Vaginal moisturizers were useless. Dr. Rx'd Vagifem 3x a week and it's truly been a life saver! All these horrible symptoms are now gone. Have been using it for around 6 years now with zero side effects."

"I was on the generic for atrophic vaginitis and bladder issues. I was on it twice a week for 10 months. Ultrasound, before I started, showed everything normal...after 10 months, numerous gallstones and hepatic hemangioma. Now I have to have my gallbladder out. It did work wonders, but I can't take it...Gyn. told me to stop immediately. I wish there were more things to help this condition!!"

"I take a fairly high dose of Effexor XR, and within a week of using Vagifem 10, my depression was as bad as it has ever been! It took me a day or two to realize a possible connection. My gynecologist told me to stop using it immediately."

"Great medicine. I was having recurrent UTIs and vaginal infections as a part of menopause. I have been on this medication for two months and have had no issues at all. I highly recommend it for vaginal atrophy"

"I used Vafifem for Atrophic Vaginitis for 8 years. I experienced hair loss, weight gain, breathlessness, painful headaches, and extreme shoulder pain resulting in limited mobility in my arms. I have also developed an abnormal heart rate resulting in Atrial Fibrillation and high blood pressure. My doctor advised me to stop using it. On stopping all of the above symptoms disappeared. I think this medication is highly toxic for some women and should be monitored more closely by your doctor."

"This med was a complete cure. I went through menopause, experienced extreme dryness and horrific pain during relations, constant urinary infections as well. I use the 10mcg, and it was perfect. Get it a lot cheaper through israelpharm. Different amounts in packaging, but still a heck of a lot cheaper than Walmart. Yay!!!"

"Really good experience with stronger dose. Now on lower dose and after a year or so, the effect is nothing like as good. As atrophic vaginal conditions increase with age, it is obvious that what once worked well will no longer be effective at lower dosage. It is a shame that so many women will have to suffer this painful condition because of a short term study of a very small sample of women."

"Oh my goodness ! I was prescribed Vagifem for terrible urine problems where I constantly had pressure to use my bladder. Well my initial response was good and it cleared up this problem really well but the side effects were horrendous. I had severe heart palpitations and feeling of absolute panic. I was journaling when I had heart palpitations and panic attacks and it was always a day after I used vagifem. I stopped using them, and I got better, after stopping for 3 months. My doctor told me to try half a tablet once a week, well I had a reaction but my palpitations were even worse. I cannot use them, so I don’t know how to treat my Atrophic Vaginitis."

"I've tried this medication for over a year and it just doesn't work. It's maybe helped increase vaginal moisture just a tiny bit, but it sure hasn't help w/ pain during intercourse. I've found it to be a waste of money."

"I am 65 years old and my last period was 12 years ago - I never had any real issues with menopause, one of the very lucky ones, I realize. I was prescribed vagifem 2.5 months ago - I did the prescribed one tab daily for two weeks then one tab twice a week. It was prescribed to address a prolapse from the rectal side of my vagina. I was hesitant because of the amount of breast cancer on my dad's side of the family (daughters of his brothers). I was also warned about breast density on the report of my last mammogram. The doctor and intern basically blew off my concerns, saying it was a very mild medication. So, since then: I have this awful yellow discharge which I never had before; I am gaining weight and am very bloated; I now wake up at 3 am with massive headaches and a pounding heart; I cry easily now. None of those things bothered me before. I've been using 5 mg melatonin for sleep most nites and always had really good sleeps until I took this stuff. I am taking myself off of this."

"I was prescribed 10mg pessaries for atrophic vaginitis. They worked quickly and well with no side effects. I found half the prescribed dose effective for me. However, four months later I have got bacterial vaginosis, which I first thought was just an increase in normal discharge. I am taking metronidazole for it."

"Have been using vagifem pessaries for 12 days. Experienced headaches initially but these seem to have disappeared. I now have severe lower back pain like period pain which I haven’t had since my periods stopped 6 years ago. The pain is so severe I cannot bend down or lower my body. I also seem to have flu like symptoms and am incredibly thirsty. I bought this product as I cannot have sex without great discomfort and wanted to try it out. I have informed my gp as I wanted to be prescribed these pessaries if the outcome was good. On the plus side my vagina is plumper and becoming moist so lubrication is a lot better but unfortunately the lower back pain is intolerable. I think I maybe extremely sensitive to these pessaries even though they are a low dose, 10 mc. I will no longer continue using vagifem as I feel very debilitated. I wish there were some kind of alternative, one that doesn’t cause severe lower back and period pain."

"My doctor prescribed 10 mcg Vagifem, then another doctor, after hearing my complaints of leg cramps and other vague problems, told me to stop using it. But there is nothing out there that works for me. Premarin cream is not for me, Combipatch I gave up long ago, so 10 mcg Vagifem seems to be my only option. All the other non-hormone lubrications do not work. So, if you are taking it, watch closely for side effects. 10 mcg is the lowest dosage, 25 mcg is not allowed by the FDA in the USA."

"Been using it for over a year, no problem at all, in fact excellent results. Got a bit worried this week when GP at routine check said there are no risks involved, that upset me, as I hadn't been aware in the first instance hence me looking on this site. Decided to use it every 5 days now to see if the effect remains the same, if so will then push it to every 6 days."

"After suffering with terrible burning, irritation, soreness and self medicating with anti fungal medication I have finally found relief with Vagifem. It wasn't thrush at all, it's, for me, a miracle product, after two weeks I am finally back to normal... thank you so much Vagifem!!"

"Insufficient insertion instructions. Inside of applicator came away from the outside once. It says the tablets won't fall out when you stand up, but first three times, my cervix must have pushed it straight out. Tried using them at bed-time, only to find them on sheet in morning. Tried again at bed-time, only to find tablet stuck, half melted, to tip of my cervix next day. Slight stinging sensation at first; when that stops, it's probably because tablet has fallen out. No instructions for pessary-wearers, presumably we remove the pessary before administering; the only method I haven't tried yet is putting tablet in, followed immediately by inserting pessary, but that would defeat the object, I imagine, leaving me dry and sore beneath. I don't care for throw-away applicators; it seems a waste of plastic not to wash and re-use them. Doctor said to stay on these for life, but I can't see the point if they won't stay in. Liquid or ointment would be better."

"Vagifem made me dizzy, too, and also caused ocular migraines, very scary. I never get headaches. I also despair of the cavalier overuse of plastic. Vagifem did work to stop my recurring urinary tract infections. I am 68 years old with acute vaginal atrophy. I am off Vagifem now. I am lucky to have discovered vaginal laser therapy which I must finance myself but which works without drugs to end the recurring UTIs. A gynecologist in my city offers this therapy which costs about what an annual gym subscription would cost."

"I am aged 68 and 3 years ago suddenly had vaginal and bladder pain, frequent urination soreness, itching , redness and swelling. The soreness has recently got worse and my Gyny prescibed Vagifem. From the first dose I experienced bloating and stomach ache but carried on until dose 7. About 1 hour after insertion I experienced the most terrible burning which carried on all night and has been flaring up in the 4 days since. Now I cannot use any of my emulsifiers of herbal creams which used to help. This medication has caused the worst pain ever. In my experience even a score of 1 is too good for it."

"I've had this prescribed by my doctor who knows I have had to use primolut to control mennoraghea associated with perimenopause at 47 yrs. Dr knows my Gynie monitors endometrium thickening as a result of using primolut as it can cause endometrium cancer. A recent ultrasound revealed normal thickening of uterus for my age 57. Some uterine fibroid cysts though I am post menopause. Ovaries are normal. My constant bladder infections and incontinence were attributed to atrophy of the vagina. And I was told initially in my 40's to use a cream on the urethra, I never did. But the infections affected my kidneys and I started to lose my hair and damaged occurred in hair structure. So I'm tempted to use the Vagifem even if it is risky."

"I started using it 3 weeks ago, noticed sudden drowsiness, wake up wanting to sleep all day. It does help lubricate my inner vagina but thats about it I use 10mg 2 times a week will reduce to once a week and see what happens. I am very sad as I am 41 and had fallopian tube cancer at 38 with full hysterectomy and used to be very sexual. Now, I cringe at the thought of a penis inside me."
