I've been taking two ambiens per night for years now. It works every night. I can't sleep because I'm in chronic pain and anything for pain gives me a migraine. So I need something to sleep. Nothing else works.

Is it something you had to discuss with your doctor first? To be able to take 2 of them? One is not working for me.

I know that I am answering this 16 hours late, but I have to tell you that it is not a very good idea to take 2 10mg Ambien without your doctor telling you to do so and they normally don't tell you to take this much.
I have taken Ambien before and it can cause you to walk, talk, eat, and even drive in your sleep!!! It is a hypnotic!! Which basically means that it puts you into a state where you are not aware of what you are doing! The reason that I stopped taking this medication is because I used to get up in the middle of the night and eat, hold conversations, and one night I got my car keys, got into my car and started it and attempted to drive!!! My Fiance heard me start the car and he stopped me before I got out of the driveway! I DID NOT REMEMBER DOING THIS THE NEXT DAY!! So please don't take a larger dose without your doctor telling you to and if you can, have someone there who can watch you when you take this just in case you do start to do things in your sleep! Believe me ... this is a very scarry side effect of this mediction. Please keep in mind that I am not a medical professional, I am a patient who has expierence with Ambien.

I'm on very high dose of prednisone for bronchial inflammation but it's causing me to have horrible anxiety really want to take a Xanax but I've been taking 10 milligrams Ambien to go to bed at night but during the day I really need something to knock the edge off and I don't know what to do any suggestions

dear BOSSLADIE75 - If Ambien 10mg (max) is not working for you, speak with your doctor about something else. I tried Ambien once, was given a weeks supply as it was used then as "short term" med. 1st night, slept like a baby. 2nd night and thru the rest of week it did NOTHING for me. Some people swear by it, others like me, don't have very good results. If your doctor is trying to help you sleep, there are other meds to try. Insomnia may require something stronger. I take Dalmane (for chronic insomnia) and have found even that works best if I don't take every night. Good Luck...

The max dose is 10mg/day. You need to talk to your dr before you make any changes with medications.

10 mg - max prescribed dosage for severe insomnia.
12.5 mg cr - max dosage for rewaking many times throughout the night. Longer lasting and you’ll feel it the next morning, as it passes slowly. After effect is similar to A great benzodiazepine, temazepam.

My main doc @vanderbilt and the nurses talked to me about trying something and so I did, I'd like your opinions on it & if its something you have tried.i take a 10mg ambien 1 night, then rotate to the 12.5 ER and I just keep rotating like they suggested since they have had awesome results with it. There decision & logic was by rotating them each night or would keep your body kinda blanketed with the 10mg & then the 12.5 Er and that way by alternating them it will get into your system better without leaving you feeling like it's not working for you. This way I have a 10mg that puts me to sleep faster and get 4 hrs of sleep and stay waking up some, next night take the 12.5 ER and it takes alittle longer to start but it comes in later on and so your sleep is better towards the end of your sleep.
So they say by rotating these pills like im doing that it builds a good wall & it's a good thought of plan that keeps a person from getting amund to just the 1 pill so with the rotating & a new different pill the next night makes great sense to me. Hell I did what my infusion team nurses said to do and I can honestly say they nailed it and it was something this simple to get both pills in your body every otherday and the results are awesome. So I thank you ladies in Nashville Tn at the 100 oaks infusion center for always thinking of us and for helping us all. My sleep never has been the nest but the waking up 10 times a night has been cut by over half, I now fall asleep faster where before it took me at least 45 minutes to dose off. Then with the rotating each night the 12.5MG ER is building up in my body and so im catching great sleep on the front & back end of sleep. So thank you for sharing these things because it's really helped me along with alot of other people. Thank yoi

I have taken two before didn't do anything for me Ambien doesn't work very well for me at best 2 hours of sleep. You should be careful though as this could increase the chances of you having a sleep walking/sex/driving etc episode. Definetely never combine it with another hypnotic as someone else did and learned his lesson.

I stopped the use of Ambien it would only allow me to sleep for about 5 or 6 hours I now take a .25 x and it lets me sleep comfortably thank you for your response
