I’ve started with mirtazapine due to GAD and weight loss and am up to 15mg at night. I sleep through the night well. I still feel the anxiety issues during the day. I take clonazepam for it, trying to take as little as possible... total of .5mg/day.
Only negative side effect is voice irritation if talking too much. I still have low inspiration to do things I once did like cooking or reading, Appetite has improved slightly. Has anyone had experience with mirtazapine and resolved the problem of daily anxiety to the point of feeling normal again? I’m on my 2nd week of mirtazapine. I will see my PCP in two more weeks. I would welcome comments from those with similar experience.
Taking mirtazapine at night for sleep?

I've had GAD with depression all of my life, and got put on 15 mg. of Mirtazapine after suffering an acute, intractable bout of anxiety about 8 years ago that caused me to lose a lot of weight and basically stop functioning normally for several months. Taking the Mirtazapine nightly and a low dose of Clonazepam during the day got me back on track. I've been on both ever since, and still have anxiety, but not nearly as bad as before. Mirtazapine usually makes me groggy and helps me fall asleep--but not always. Sometimes I take a low dose of Ambien as well. (However, I've accidentally taken Mirtapazine a couple of times during the day--it looks a lot like one of my other meds and I've mixed them up-- and that ALWAYS makes me groggy!) My appetite came back with a vengeance, and I've put on a lot of weight, more than I would like, and I can't seem to shed any of it. It also gives me restless legs if I don't take it and fall asleep immediately, so I have to time it just right or be miserable in bed.
It takes time to see the full benefit of any new med, so be patient if it's only been two weeks (I know that's really hard). I've been on a lot of antidepressants, and it always takes one to two months for me to know whether or not they are going to help me.
Taking Clonazepam sometimes makes me feel sluggish and sleepy during the day, but overall I feel pretty good, and I'll take the side effects any day over what I was going through when I started my regimen. I hope you start feeling better soon.
Hi again, Red!
You still have a lot of room to tweak your dosage:
"Initial dose: 15 mg orally once a day at bedtime
Maintenance dose: 15 to 45 mg orally once a day
Maximum dose: 45 mg/day"
Since you're showing improvements but not enough to feel "normal" you and your doctor might discuss increasing your dose... but it may also be a matter of giving the medication more time to become more effective:
"Sleep, energy, or appetite may show some improvement within the first 1-2 weeks. Improvement in these physical symptoms can be an important early signal that the medication is working. Depressed mood, anxiety, and lack of interest in activities may need up to 6-8 weeks to fully improve."
Try to be patient. As they say, "All good things come to those who wait."
