but also depression. I just started feeling somewhat calm. I am concerned that vigorous exercise will increase my metabolism and get me charged up (anxious) and also possibly have a negative effect on my meds Should I be concerned? I also take other meds. but I'm not concerned about exercise's effect on them.

Added 20 Jan 2014:by "also possibly have a negative effect on my med" I mean the level of zoloft in my bloodstream or whatever
Added 20 Jan 2014:I would also add that I am doing breathing exercises to calm me down. How can I do this when I'm huffing and puffing?

I was on Zoloft for about a year and found it very helpful to exercise. I did not feel it hinder my medication it actually helped a great deal.
Best of luck
Hi, Poppe, you ol' fox! I think your question would best be answered by your doctor, but I really don't feel you have reason for any great concern. First of all, exercise can significantly improve depressive symptoms because it causes your body to secrete endorphins, nature's feel good drug, and it probably won't affect your Zoloft levels significantly. Studies have shown that exercise can affect certain medications, but the clinical significance of that is unknown.
One thing you should be aware of is that both sweating and Zoloft can minorly reduce sodium levels ~ don't eat more salt, but don't decrease your salt intake.
Try this breathing exercise: Inhale through your nose for 2-3 seconds, hold for 2-3, exhale throuh your mouth 2-3, hold for 2-3. Repeat this several times then increase the intervals as your respiration and heart rate decrease.
Good luck, Poppe. I'm proud of you for thinking about an exercise program! Great benefits ~ and studies have shown diet/exercise when you first start taking an AD can often offset any potential weight gain from the drug.
Thanks WCV, You always have a way of alleviating worries/concerns. Your caring is felt even through this medium. You have great advice and it is reassuring to know you are there looking out for us. I especially appreciate your looking out for my pocket book. The price of a new wadrobe would likely break the bank. Likewise you might have saved my marriage. It is nice to know that there is the chance that my girth will not exceed a point where I can no longer give my wife the warm hugs that she so deserves ;-)
Amen Poppe:) You sound like a nice, warm caring husband!
Really! I wanna give Poppe a big hug!
Inhaling through my nose for 2-3 seconds, holding for 2-3, exhaling throuh my mouth 2-3, holding 2-3. Repeating several times increasing intervals respiration and heart rate decreaseing... warm hug accepted and given in return. Peace my friend
I'm actually doing this breathing exercise right at this very moment! It does help! :)
This is a beginner's exercise designed to focus your attention on your breathing and away from conflict. It helps you to focus, relieves stress and anxiety by slowing respiration and increasing blood flow to the brain.
Next step is when you're inhaling use your abdominal muscles to push out your belly (make a pot belly). Visualize drawing your breath down deep into your belly; release as you exhale.
This will help to relieve muscular tension in your neck, chest, spine, and pelvis.
Thank you- WCV for the helpful breathing exercises..I wrote them in my jounal to practice..Are they from yoga class? fondly,~~dD~~
Yoga, meditation, simplified Reichian breathing techniques that a psychiatrist taught me long ago. :-}
