I am currently on my 3rd Depo shot and I want to know if it can cause permanent infertility? I have done research and some say it can cause infertility. What's your experience? Please let me know!

I know this post is older but I had to throw in my 2 cents. I have 2 kids already (no fertility issues and clock work periods) and when my youngest was about 6months old I got on Depo. Loved being on it, I had 0 complaints for 1 year. When my youngest was about 18 months old we decided to complete our family with baby #3 (this was Feb 2021).
It took 12 months for my periods to return. When it came back I bled for 4 weeks straight. The following cycle, however, was back to my pre-depo cycle. We tried unsuccessfully for 1 year. OB/GYN suggested IUIs. We did some testing, some ultrasounds, hubby was screened, HSG (aka worst thing ever), and was given the green light as nothing was wrong. We did 3 unsuccessful IUIs. Went to a fertility specialist, who did a few more tests and ultrasounds (mostly concerned with my c-section scar) everything was found to be within normal limits. Continued to try on our own.
Was suggested to go on the mini pill to "straighten things out" for 6 months. Again tried 2 more unsuccessful IUIs. And that leads up to today (July 31, 2024). Still trying on our own. I am taking Vitex and have felt more myself lately. I still notice things coming back that used to be part of my normal... so anyways, I fully blame Depo.
Hi, I am now in my 40’s and a mom of three biological kids but want to provide some feedback that may help. I took the depo shot from my teenage years through early twenties for about five years. I could not get pregnant afterwards! My gyno said to take my temperature daily before getting out of bed and that when ovulation occurs, I should have a higher body temp-typically about 99 degrees. Also suggested was to hang my feet in the air after being intimate. While he was kidding, he said many females go and clean themselves up. He said do not rush. My periods would only happen once every 60 days. He suggested progesterone but instead I went to a licensed fertility specialist after 2 years of trying without any luck. They ran all kinds of tests. I gave nine viles of blood, husband had labs too. No issues. His sperm count was ridiculously high, the longevity, and the shape all were within normal range. Then they wanted to see if I had scar tissue and the uterus shape.
I had a procedure called hysterosalpingogram (hsm). It hurt like hell in the moment. The dye burned, but they took the x-ray, and then flushed it out. I was pregnant the next cycle. It flushed out whatever mild scar tissue and I went on to deliver a healthy baby, every two years. Three was more than enough for me, so my husband ran for a vasectomy. Please consider talking to a specialist in fertility to determine exactly what the hiccup is. Treatments are really coming along in this day and age. You are not alone. Do not settle and suffer in silence.
I see it's been several years since there's been any comments here but after reading all these, gosh it sure makes me wonder if this was my issues. I was regular till I had the shot at 17, took it for a year and then somewhat irregular after that. I was never able to have a baby, to my knowledge I never conceived at all. We saw specialists and they said it was unexplained because from what he could see we both were just fine
Horrible stories about the drug.
I came off the depo provera about 3 years ago. I was on it for 6 years, never had any problems while on it apart from the first month. I had 2 days of itching all over my body. My periods stopped more or less straight away too.
My periods returned to normal )28 day cycle) after 12 to 18 months. However I did have periods before this but not regular.
My partner and I wanted to have baby we have been together over 3 years. This year we fell pregnant in may and miscarried at 5 weeks 5 days.
We then fell pregnant again but again miscarried in August but at 10 weeks afew days. We choose to wait alittle but fell pregnant again and this time miscarried at 8 weeks.
We both have children from our previous relationships too. I did say to my partner that due to being in the injection i might not be able to conceive but i have conceived just can not carry a baby.
I am gutted although I knew there was temporary fertility issues I for one did not think it would stop me from having a child altogether.
There really needs to be more research on it.
I am currently experiencing the same problem. I been off Depo Provera for 4 years going on 5 and I am still having difficulties trying to have a child. I have done ton of research and it states on the FDA website and Pfizer site that “return to fertility” should be within 31 months since the last depo shot. It has been past 31 months for me and the long term side effects I am facing due to depo is still on going. If I knew what I knew now I wouldn’t have NEVER considered using this birth control method.
I got depo once in 2015 & am still unable to conceive.. periods are fine but not ovulating after 3 yrs.
If you are still trying to conceive, try looking into Vitex. It has helped women (including me & others I've recommended it to) get their hormones rebalanced after Depo. You cannot use it at the same time as hormonal birth control.
Late comment here sorry, but I had to respond. I started Depo when I was 17 and was on it for 3 years straight. It’s been 22 months since my last injection. My periods have just started to become more regular in the last year to 6 months or so. They’re still somewhat irregular but my bf and I have been trying to get pregnant the last 5 months and no luck. I believe I am still infertile, and I think it’s from the depo. I’m not on any other birth control. I wondered if I had any other infertility problems or if my bf did but we haven’t been tested for that yet . I just kind of figured I can’t get pregnant because of the depo I was on for a long time. I have read online that it can take some women up to 2 years to get pregnant depending on how long you were on depo. I was on it a long time (3 yrs) so I feel that could be why?? I just hope there’s nothing else wrong. I’m only 22 years old,
Guys you know I have been on this thread for ages and I have been chasing the infertility train for a long time convinced I was and I chased doctors and so on and it has nearly been years of depo free and pill free and I have fallen pregnant unplanned. I am not ready for this baby but after all my struggles and worries I couldn’t think of not having it and I will find a way to mange. We have hope
All you need to do is regulate your periods much as you can use apps and use your ovulation days. I obviously done this testing my body and it has worked after 6 months of really testing it before it wasn’t real trying. I have hope for you all
The first time I read about it, it said there's 1% chance infertility.I took it when I was 15 to 17 then switched to the pill after 2 weeks of stop taking it I got pregnant but miscarried, took once again when I was 19 I believe, I'm now 22 and I havnt taken birth control since and I yet have not been lucky to get pregnant so you should be careful.
Personally, yes it can. When I was 16 I only had taken the depo 2 times now I'm almost 23 and I have been trying to conceive a child for 2+ years with my fiance and it still has not worked. We both have been checked out to see if there was any problems with him and myself. Everything came back negative. They couldn't find anything wrong. Studies also show that the depo can cause ovarian cancer. The depo and other birth control mostly depo are used to not be fertile. But this is just what I've looked up but you never know. I would recommend talking to you ob/gyn about it
Has anyone else had problems conceiving after being on the depo for a long time. I was on the depo for 8 years with no breaks. I got my period back around 1 year later. We have been trying for a baby for over 2.5 years now and we have followed all the charts and fertitle Windows with no success. I am going to the hospital next month to check on my fertility but am really worried that i may never have children. Has anybody else had the same problem
New update: Today is September 1st. My shot was due 2 days ago and I'm already spotting! And not the light red spotting. Its about as red as red gets! Hopefully this means I haven't gone infertile after over 6 years of being on Depo Provera. My problem is, I need to track my periods and I don't know which day to start tracking. (Now or when I get a consistent flow.) I never thought I'd be so happy to see blood. Oh, and the cramps are horrible!! But I've read that a lot of women have cramps like never before while withdrawing from the shot. Any updates or advice?
hi ive had the shot once and havent had my cycle at all and am scared it wont come back ive most of the comments and seen some people have had it more then one and not had a problem but is there anyone here that has never got there period back after just one???
How long has it been since your shot? My period stopped immediately with my first shot and I didn't have any periods while I was on it. I loved that actually. It took nearly two years after I stopped to get my periods back but I was on the shot for 8 years.
Have you been able to get pregnant ? Still no update. Doctors won't look into my case as they probably know it causes infertility and I will need to go to a gynaecologist which is a lot of money. Guess it won't ever be fully confirmed but I know I can't
I did get pregnant, with no fertility or medical assistance and had a healthy son nearly two years ago and I was 47 years old. I just think that if it caused infertility and I was on it for 8 years straight and stopped when I was 40 it seems impossible that I would have gotten pregnant so late in life. I have read all these posts though and it seems people are having trouble, but I was on it for a very long time and had zero periods during that time and had a healthy baby, so I don't know...
Hey Everyone
I know this thread is kind of old but I was hoping for updates from those of you that had fertility/conceiving issues. Have you been able to have children since posting on here? I am 23 and have been on the Depo shot since I had my son at 17 (6 years).
I have never had any negative side effects and stopped having periods right after I went in for my second shot. I actually really liked the shot and swore by it until I found this thread. Now I'm super worried that, in the future, I wont be able to have more children. By the way, the shot I received last month WILL be my LAST! And thank y'all sooo much for being so open about your personal problems! If it weren't for this thread, I probably would've stayed on the shot for another 10 years.
I was on it for 10 years, it was great because, like you, I had no side effects and my period completely stopped. I've been off it for 7 years now (unsuccessful in getting pregnant with 2 different partners) and I was recently diagnosed by OBGYN with "Unexplained Infertility" Don't have thousands of dollars for a fertility clinic so just have to accept that I will never have kids. I fully believe this is due to the Depo
This is devastating. Why is nothing being done about this? Even when you look up the side effects it says NOTHING about infertility. I just wish I would've done more research sooner. I was more focused on not having more children at the time. I really hope someone on here has had a change of luck and can give us all hope that this is not permanent.
I seem to be the only one with a happy ending, so I hope I can give y'all some hope. I was on depo for 8 years, from the age of 32 until I was 40. I had oneāchild when I was 25. I figured I should be going into menopause soon, so I got off the shots to let my body do that. I got my first period nearly 2 years after quitting and slowly returned to regular periods after that. I got married when I was 44 to a man who is 9 years younger than me who also had never been married but who did not have any children. I told him I was too old for fertility treatments, but I would not prevent a pregnancy and if it was meant to be, it would be. Six weeks after we were married, I found out that I was pregnant but miscarried at 9 weeks. Two years later I was 46 and assumed menopause was close when I found out I was pregnant again. At the age of 47, I gave birth to a healthy beautiful boy, 8 lbs 13 oz, 21 inches long. He'll be 2 in August. So
, I am living proof that it can happen after depo and at my age, completely naturally with 22 years between children! Praying for you all to be blessed with the babies you hope for!
Unfortunately they deny that Depo causes infertility, could you imagine the lawsuits!!! I tried mentioning it to my doctors and they quickly dismissed it. My theory is that taking a drug, that alters your reproductive system, for an extended length of time is bound to do some permanent damage. I've come across far too many women that can't conceive, after taking the depo, for it to just be coincidence
This is so bad guys I have an appointment tomorrow to try and get more information so I am aware at 22 if I can have kids or not. Too many people with the same situations thank you for updating us and this thread I feel like I've been talking to myself going crazy in regards to this
Please keep us updated if you can! After reading all of this, I cant wait for the 3 months to pass since my last shot (2 months left). I feel like I've been poisoning my body for the last 6 years. I had no idea what it could do. I read on another forum that taking a body cleansing vitamin helps get the shot out of your system a little sooner and I don't know how true that is but I'm ready to try just about anything to get this crap out of me.
I'm in a similar boat. Been on it for 5 years. Off at 24. I always had super light spotting periods 2 weeks before I was due for my second shot and would last until I got it. JUST got off and switched to the nuvaring so I'll see if my periods come back on the off week. I had achey joints and just heard your only suppose to be on it for 2 years. Which is annoying cause I started asking plan parenthood (around 2years ) how long is too long for me to be on it and all they said is heir only concern is for bones NOT INFERTILITY. I am not planning trying getting pregnant for a couple years waiting til marriage. But this REALLY scares me. All I ever wanted is to be a mom :( hoping that depo didn't ruin that. I would also like to hear if These people had success and after how long.
Funny you mention bones because I've been having issues with my legs recently again. More over my knees and ankles and couldn't think why. Been and issue over the years on and off. Makes more sense why now. Forgot that they mention it can thin your bones but they didn't tell me that after my 4 years of being on depo. So I'm in both boats really because doctors can't or don't want to tell me and my legs are funny on and off. I hope we all find our ways but I defo don't take my pill consistently now and I haven't fallen pregnant.
UPDATE: Since posting, my SO and I have decided that we want to conceive!! :D I have 8 days left until my next shot is due(i'm not getting it). I've had some minor pregnancy symptoms but I'm 99% positive that they're Depo withdrawal symptoms. (nausea, bloated, some heartburn, cramping, etc.) Also this weird twitch feeling in my stomach for a few weeks now that seems to be happening more often and all over at different times. Very similar to a baby kicking during early pregnancy but I'm definitely NOT pregnant... YET. ;)
Does anyone else have a more exciting update? I need good news!!
Guys I have offficially been off the depo and pill for 6 months. I stopped the depo a long time ago now I’m talking maybe 3 years but still took the Yasmin pill (also for my skin mainly) as I didn’t want to fall pregnant too, I took it here and there because I KNEW my body was giving me signs that I can’t get pregnant so never worried. I completely stopped taking everything and cleared my body out 100% and 6 months in and still negative tests. I don’t want to get pregnant right now but the fact that my body is showing me that I can’t is making it hard to not want too. I know it’s only 6 months but this is the first time clear of everything for real and consistently having sex. Very worrying to think I have been taking pills and shots when without I still am not pregnant
Also Kayev! I hope you are pregnant. From all of us lol
Unfortunately, still not pregnant. And still no period. It's only been two months since my last shot expired so I'm trying to be patient but its soooo hard. I keep thinking my cycle is coming back because of these weird symptoms which seem to be different every week but the cramps have completely disappeared and at this point, I'm pretty sure ill go crazy long before I ever conceive lol I hope everyone else has better news!
