Squiggle Toothbuilder has been my toothpaste of choice, available on Amazon. I have no burning tongue but my cheeks have become intolerant of minty flavors, among other things, and they do burn. I have a very dry mouth and now Biotene gel burns too. I’m hoping that using the gel hasn’t made things worse.
Whatever the cause of this condition, I noticed that my toothpaste was an irritant. I had been using Colgate Total Whitening (with sensitive relief formula), which is flavored with sorbitol. I switched to one which helps. It is Crest Pro-Health Sensitivity (whitening plus, Scope minty fresh). The active ingredient in the Colgate Total is somewhat different, (.45%) stannuous fluoride vs. (.24%) of sodium fluoride of the Crest.
Mint in toothpaste or anything else takes my burning to a level 9-10. (Basil is also in Mint family) My dentist had me try a Non-toothpaste dental product with Xylitol to use for my toothpaste. I've had BMS 7 years now and only use this product to brush my teeth. I LOVE it, find it soothing and it does not burn my mouth. It is best to order it Online as stores do not sell it. A few dentists where I live sell it but I find ordering it online quicker. I do not work for their company either, no vested interest in it.
If interested, you can go go directly to the Manufacture website and read about it if you want
at : Oxyfresh.com They have many different products but this is the only one I use.
The product is called "Oxyfresh Pro Relief Dental Gel" with oxygen, zinc and ALOE. It is highly soothing. The front of the tube or box says 'fresh mint dental gel' but the mint is so incredibly LOW, it has never caused any burning for me, which is very surprising. This is not toothpaste. It is a non-foaming dental gel for painful oral tissues. It does have Xylitol & Aloe in it. My understanding is the Xylitol helps prevent cavities. I floss & brush with this product 2 x a day. In 7 years I have not had 1 cavity and I've had more than my share of cavities in former years using Colgate, Crest, etc. With BMS I have become a little 'OCD' about flossing and brushing out of fear of needing any form of dental work. Aside from dental cleanings, I do not want to ever have anymore crowns, cavities or root canals. I fear any dentist could make the pain worse. This Dental Gel, for me, has been an incredible product for my BMS. Their website is very detailed for anyone wishing to read about their "Dental GEL". Hope this helps.
There is also one that has fluoride but that’s not the one you use correct
Hi Golfadkt,
Please accept my apologies for my late reply. Both my husband and myself became Very sick in December and spent weeks at home in bed, fever, etc. I checked email today and saw that you had asked me about the Oxyfresh Pro Relief Dental Gel that I use. You are 100% correct, I do NOT use the one that has Fluoride. As to other comments, I don't want BMS either but am going on 8 years. I realize toothpaste did not cause BMS. Yes, my BMS is due to Nerve Damage. My 5th, 7th and 9th cranial nerves are permanently damaged. However, I've found all my former toothpastes (Colgate, Crest, etc. ) made the Burning WORSE each time I brushed. Once my dentist had me try the Oxyfresh Pro Relief Dental Gel, it never made my Burning worse - though other toothpastes have for me. I've read that the SLS in toothpaste can irritate BMS, not cause it. Anything with "MINT" in it sends me to the moon with increased burning.
I find this product for the past 4 years has worked well for me and I've not had ONE cavity while using it. I did brush for with Baking Soda prior to Oxyfresh but soon developed Thrush with baking soda. The Dentist told me to stop using baking soda to brush with as it creates an alkaline environment in mouth which is friendly to Thrush.
If you have other questions, please don't hesitate to post. Again, so very sorry I missed your question. Hope my answer helps. I also rinse with a clear Aloe Vero liquid some days that I find soothing to burning tongue & gums. I buy it at our health food store. It has no flavor, coloring, or additives. Happy New Year! K2Z
Thanks so much for all this great info..stay well
I actually use children’s fruit flavored toothpaste and it doesn’t irritate at all.
Yes. I have been using that for months. But I need a cure. It’s frustrating
Yes. I too have been using that for months. But I want a cure. It’s frustrating
From what I’ve researched, there is no cure. When the pain becomes unbearable I switch a mixtures if 1tsp if Maalox or Mylanta with 1tsp of children’s Benadryl. I swish for a few minutes and then spit in sink. If it’s really bad I’ll add a small squirt of Orajel. It numbs the pain for at least a couple of hours and it can be repeated 3 times a day.
Add some lidocaine to your mix. It helps Lidocaine, maalox. and Benadryl. 2.5 mg of each
Not many people are discussing medications that work. I am on year 14 and I would be suicidal if my neurologist hasn't recommended the off-label combination of two meds: gabapentin and amititryptyline. I would say that it knocks the pain down by 75%. I take 600mg gaba in the morning and 30 MG amitriptyline at night. Someone in this thread got sleepy from Gabs, but I don't. Everyone had different side effects.
In the year 1 of BMS I tried Lyrica. It worked amazingly on the pain and made me a babbling napper with nystagmus. Had to stop it, darn it!
If any reader here has not tried this med combo I would suggest it. If anyone has a different med or med cocktail that works please share.
By the way, about 12 years ago I went to Mayo for help. At that time they had no cure and said the med cocktail I was taking was a good choice. I believe I was only a data point in a study, but I don't mind. I'm a scientist. I get it.
I use Oranurse unflavoured toothpaste, I buy it off Amazon. It’s also none foaming and seems to work very well.
In my humble opinion, for me, toothpaste makes no difference. I believe mine is nerve damage caused by a virus. No foods or toothpaste make any difference at all. 7 years and just trying to live with it... funny..I notice that when I use a toothpick, symptoms lessen.
Hi wondergirl, I’ve had BMS for one year. I’ve been to a million doctors. My neurologist gave me gabapentin which gives you a euphoric feeling then makes you sleepy . It doesn’t really take the pain away but you dont notice it as much . Also my doctor gave me some pills to create more saliva which helps for a little while but the side effect is sweating and nausea so just take half a pill it’s easier to tolerate.I also try to stay positive and thank God when the pain is less. Also I was reading about Botox injections in your tongue have been found helpful for people with BMS. I’m going to try that:)
Hi. Ive also tried EVERY toothpaste. Ive been up and down the mouth care aisle a hundred times. My tongue has been killing me for 2 years. Severe pain. Its hard to do anything. Speaking is a nightmare. It hurts worse to talk. Trouble swallowing and teethmarks on the side of tongue hurt terribly. Feels swollen. Everything i do is a chore because of this pain. But i been using a baking soda toothpaste. Dunno if its helping or hurting. Sometimes i feel like cutting my tongue off. Ouch. Anyways ive seen a few drs. Nobody has answers or offered me a prescription to try. One dr told me to try mouthgaurd at night and swish tabasco sauce in the day. Didnt help me, but maybe someone else. Something about the capsaicin in hot sauce, interacts and 'resets' nerve fibers in your mouth. Also noticed an uncontrollable twtiching in my tongue. But reading these posts and people suffering for 5+ years with this?! WTF?! I cant take this pain much longer, any suggestions???
I use Epic Xylitol toothpaste. I use the spearmint and I cant believe that brushing my tongue actually slightly and temporally helps my BMS. Other than that, besides Magic Swizzle, I've found nothing that helps.
I find that all forms of mint exacerbate the problem, thus I seek non-mint toothpastes. Currently I use Tom's all natural mango toothpaste. I miss the freshening factor of mint and I brush my tongue to keep my breath fresh. That tongue brushing also exacerbates the problem, so I take a small nip of Oralgel to deaden the pain for a while. This is my first time on the support group site and I think I am coming up on having BMS for five years. Now I will keep reading past posts and see what I can learn/contribute...
i have BMS and i´ve been using biotene (toothpaste-gel-washmouth) and i think it works a little... im from peru so i´ve to buy it everytime a family member travel.
But the last one that brought me was stronger than the last ones... so i dont know if they changed something.
Sorry for my rustic english i speak spanish!
I found that Arm and Hammer Baking soda tooth paste helps a lot. I will say to use a tiny amount . It also feels hot to me but that is because of the Burning tongue. Good luck. Let me know.
I have the same problem and I use Biotene. They make toothpaste, mouthwash, gum, and a gel to use. They don't taste great but they do work.
