Hi everyone. I've been on Ativan for over 2 years now. I started taking it for social anxiety, but over the past few months it hasn't been helping my anxiety. In some cases, it will actually make my anxiety worse when taking it. I know my tolerance has gone way up, but even in higher doses, it just doesn't work. What is a sensible alternative to Ativan? Anybody ever have similar effects?
Ativan- Is not working for my anxiety anymore. What is a good alternative?

Im experiencing exactly what your giing through. I going to talk to a psychologist tomorrow about it, because i gotta be able to live without suffering
Have you thought about Klonopin? Valium? Xanax ER? It may be time to switch to another BDP. It's common to grow a tolerance to them. Please talk with the doctor and let them know they have lost its' effect.
Good luck to you and hope you find a better medication. Anxiety can be very debilitating.
Best wishes,
chris
Hi Chris- Thanks, I will talk to my doctor.
Also, can you switch from Ativan to another BDP, without going through withdrawal? I ended up in the ER last year from stopping ativan cold turkey, which was a terrible idea.

Yes. It should be a smooth transition if the doc prescribes the right dose. BDP can be very dangerous quitting cold turkey. You sure know how THAT feels, UGH!!
I had a similar experience with Ativan I was on 1 mg and was taking 1-1/2 tablets three times a day, after about 2 years I reaced a point until it didn't work as well, the doctor switched me to another Benzodiazepine which worked your body adjusts after a period of time and either a dose adjustement or a pill change needs to be made, sounds like it's time for you to talk with the doctor because things get more difficult and he may be able to make a smooth change without you having any problems
I agree that it's time to tell your doctor. I find xanax more helpful than ativan. Ativan made me jittery and didn't calm me down the way that .5 mg. Xanax did. I was taking 1mg. Ativan, once daily. Are you on an antidepressant? At one time, I was on Zoloft 50mg. and Xanax .5mg. once a day and it really helped me a lot.
Good luck to you and pls. tell your dr.
I have some sad news for you. The ativan you get now is not much more than a sugar pill. The idea of the powers that be is that they would rather have you on a psychotic inducing medication like the current anti depressants. I used to order trapax and other benzo['s which kept me happy, productive at a very high level. but now all those avewnues have been closed. and the stupid thing is that they sell tylenol 1 which you can filter out the tylenol with an ordinary filter and use acetone to remove the caffeine. In my honest opinion I would rather take the trapax and be highly productive and happy, the alternative is disability due to the back pain <i suffer from daily. God Bless every one...
