Precautions

It is very important that your doctor check your or your child's progress closely while you are receiving this medicine to make sure this medicine is working properly and to decide if you should continue to receive it. Blood and urine tests may be needed to check for unwanted effects.

This medicine may increase your or your child's risk of developing blood clots. Check with your doctor right away if you or your child have swelling and pain in your arms, legs, or stomach, chest pain, trouble breathing, loss of sensation, confusion, or problems with muscle control or speech.

Receiving this medicine together with birth control pills may also increase your risk of developing blood clots. Use another form of birth control (including condoms, spermicide) to keep from getting pregnant.

This medicine may increase your risk for seizures. This risk may more likely to occur if you are having a surgery for a heart or blood vessel problem. Talk to your doctor if you have any concerns.

This medicine may cause a serious allergic reaction, called anaphylaxis, which can be life-threatening and requires immediate medical attention. Tell your doctor right away if you have a rash, itching, hoarseness, trouble breathing or swallowing, or any swelling of your hands, face, or mouth after receiving this medicine.

If you or your child will be receiving tranexamic acid (the active ingredient contained in Lysteda) injection for longer than several days, your doctor may want you to have your eyes checked regularly by an ophthalmologist (eye doctor). Blurred vision, difficulty with reading, or any other change in vision may occur during or after treatment this medicine.

This medicine may make you dizzy. Do not drive or do anything else that could be dangerous until you know how this medicine affects you.

Do not take other medicines unless they have been discussed with your doctor. This includes prescription or non-prescription (over-the-counter [OTC]) medicines and herbal or vitamin supplements.

Serious side effects of Lysteda

Along with its needed effects, tranexamic acid may cause some unwanted effects. Although not all of these side effects may occur, if they do occur they may need medical attention.

Check with your doctor or nurse immediately if any of the following side effects occur while taking tranexamic acid:

  • anxiety
  • bloody or cloudy urine
  • blurred or loss of vision
  • changes in vision
  • chest pain or tightness
  • confusion
  • cough
  • difficult or painful urination
  • difficulty swallowing
  • disturbed color perception
  • dizziness, fainting, or lightheadedness when getting up suddenly from a lying or sitting position
  • double vision
  • fast heartbeat
  • halos around lights
  • hives, itching, skin rash
  • migraine headache
  • night blindness
  • numbness of the hands
  • overbright appearance of lights
  • pain, redness, or swelling in the arm or leg
  • puffiness or swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes, face, lips, or tongue
  • redness of the skin
  • seizures
  • sudden decrease in the amount of urine
  • sweating
  • trouble breathing
  • tunnel vision
  • unusual tiredness or weakness

Other side effects of Lysteda

Some side effects of tranexamic acid may occur that usually do not need medical attention. These side effects may go away during treatment as your body adjusts to the medicine. Also, your health care professional may be able to tell you about ways to prevent or reduce some of these side effects.

Check with your health care professional if any of the following side effects continue or are bothersome or if you have any questions about them:

  • bleeding, blistering, burning, coldness, discoloration of the skin, feeling of pressure, hives, infection, inflammation, itching, lumps, numbness, pain, rash, redness, scarring, soreness, stinging, swelling, tenderness, tingling, ulceration, or warmth at injection site
  • diarrhea
  • giddiness
  • nausea
  • vomiting

Hypersensitivity

A case of severe allergic reaction to tranexamic acid was reported involving a subject on her fourth cycle of treatment who experienced dyspnea, tightening of her throat, and facial flushing that required emergency medical treatment.[Ref]
