It is possible to take Adderall during pregnancy, but there are some potential risks for both the mother and baby. According to a 2021 review on the effects of ADHD medications on pregnancy outcomes, there is not enough data to prove that stimulants like Adderall raise the risk of complications when taken during pregnancy. However, some studies have suggested that the medication is not completely benign. More research is needed to understand the risks of taking Adderall during pregnancy.

Because ADHD and narcolepsy can greatly impact daily functioning and can even put some people in danger, treatment with medications like Adderall (amphetamine and dextroamphetamine) may be required throughout pregnancy in certain cases. Some research suggests pregnant women with ADHD might be more vulnerable to worsening cognition. Stopping treatment could put both mother and baby at risk. It is important to weigh the risks and benefits of treatment with your healthcare provider.

What happens if you take Adderall during pregnancy?

Based on limited studies, Adderall does not appear to increase the risk for birth defects or perinatal death. One study found a possible higher risk for gastroschisis (hole in the stomach) in babies born to mothers who took Adderall during pregnancy, but other studies have not found this link. However, Adderall might raise the risk of premature delivery and low birth weight. Taking stimulants like Adderall during late pregnancy have been linked to reduced fetal growth. This can mean your baby is born smaller and/or with a smaller head size.

In one study, over 3,000 women exposed to amphetamine–dextroamphetamine early on during pregnancy had a higher risk of preeclampsia (high blood pressure during pregnancy) and preterm birth. Researchers concluded that the risks were small, and women should not stop their ADHD treatment based on their findings. Other studies have also found that women who took amphetamine during pregnancy were more likely to develop preeclampsia.

Does Adderall cause withdrawal symptoms in newborns?

It is not known if Adderall causes withdrawal symptoms in newborns after the mother has been taking it while pregnant. The manufacturer cautions that babies born to mothers taking Adderall might experience withdrawal symptoms, such as agitation and lack of energy.

Are there long-term effects on children born to mothers who took Adderall during pregnancy?

There is not enough research on long-term effects on behavior in children who were exposed to Adderall while in their mother’s womb. One study that included about 2,000 children found that children born to mothers who continued ADHD medication during pregnancy did not have a higher risk of brain development problems, or problems with vision, hearing, seizures, or growth compared to children born to mothers who stopped their ADHD medication.

Do you need to stop taking Adderall when pregnant?

There are currently no clear guidelines on ADHD treatment during pregnancy. You do not need to stop taking Adderall while pregnant, but you should consult with a healthcare professional about the risks and benefits of continuing treatment with Adderall for your health condition, and all of your treatment options.

A 2024 review article in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology (AJOG) offers some clinical guidance. The authors recommend initially treating mild to moderate ADHD during pregnancy with:

  • Psychoeducation
  • Self-management strategies
  • Coaching
  • Psychotherapies

For moderate to severe ADHD, the authors suggest considering medication in addition to the treatments listed above, since they have some reassuring data around safety. Options include stimulants, like Adderall, and nonstimulants.

To minimize your baby’s exposure in the womb, take the lowest dose necessary to treat your symptoms. Your healthcare provider will monitor you and your baby closely during pregnancy. Do not stop taking your medication(s) without consulting with a healthcare professional first.
