What is the difference between Breztri vs Trelegy?
Trelegy and Breztri are both triple-combination inhalers, but they're approved for different uses. Trelegy can be used for both COPD and asthma in adults, while Breztri is only for COPD.
Trelegy Ellipta, made by GSK, got FDA approval in 2017. Trelegy is a dry powder inhaler that combines three medicines: an inhaled steroid (fluticasone), a long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA) (umeclidinium), and a long-acting beta-agonist (LABA) (vilanterol). Doctors might prescribe Trelegy for people who are already using Breo Ellipta (which has two of these medicines) but need extra help with their breathing. It's important to note that Trelegy isn't for quick relief of sudden breathing problems.
Breztri Aerosphere, produced by AstraZeneca, was approved more recently in 2020. Like Trelegy, it also combines three types of medicine but uses different drugs with similar ways of working to those in Trelegy: budesonide (a corticosteroid), glycopyrrolate (a LAMA), and formoterol (a LABA). Breztri is a metered dose inhaler, which means it sprays out a mist. People use it twice a day, taking two puffs each time. Breztri is only for COPD and isn't approved for asthma or quick relief of breathing difficulties.
Both of these inhalers are meant for long-term, regular use to help manage breathing problems in adults with COPD. They're not meant for children or emergency situations when someone is having trouble breathing.

What are some alternatives for Trelegy Ellipta?
An alternative to the Trelegy Ellipta triple therapy inhaler would be to combine the use of two separate inhalers - Breo Ellipta (fluticasone/vilanterol) and Incruse Ellipta (umeclidinium). You would also need to keep your fast-acting inhaler, such as albuterol (ProAir, Proventil, Ventolin), close by for sudden symptoms. Continue reading
Can asthma inhalers cause a sore throat?
Yes, some asthma inhalers can cause a sore throat, irritation and hoarseness due to the active ingredient, like a corticosteroid, depositing on the back of your throat. Using a spacer device, rinsing your mouth with water after your dose and improving your inhaler technique can help reduce the chance for a sore throat. Continue reading
How long does it take for Trelegy to work?
Trelegy Ellipta is an inhaler for asthma or COPD and must be used daily to be effective. Trelegy Ellipta will be absorbed into your lungs quickly (usually within 15 to 60 minutes) after you take your dose, but it is NOT used as a fast-acting rescue inhaler for sudden breathing problems. It is a maintenance medicine for long-term use. Continue reading
