For High Blood Pressure "Verapamil 80 mg 2 times a day lowered my blood pressure significantly. The side effects are occasional constipation, itchy rashes, little shortness of breath, and mild fatigue. Drinking at least 8 to 10 glasses of water a day helps. I like this better than atenolol, which lowered my heartbeat and blood pressure to 100/49, and hydrochlorothiazide, which caused dehydration, tingling, rashes, feeling very cold, and fatigue."

For Migraine Prevention "To me, this is a wonder drug. My migraines were driving me crazy, it was the most uncomfortable experience. I was told by my neurologist that I have cluster migraines and suffered with it for about 6 years, and he put me on 40 mg of Verapamil twice a day. I can now live freely. If I get migraines now, they are very weak, and I can go about my day normally."

Calan SR (verapamil) for High Blood Pressure "Very effective in lowering my blood pressure, but for the three weeks I was on it, I had horrible diarrhea (I was told it would go away in a few days) and subsequently turned into bleeding problems. I was on stomach meds for over one year after taking it for only three weeks and still to this day suffer from it. Be very careful with this med. READ the warnings closely, this side effect is rare but not an 'unknown' reaction to this drug. I was just unprepared and trusted my doctor, boy, was I wrong."

Calan (verapamil) for Migraine Prevention "I started taking Calan (Verapamil) 20 years ago. It decreased my migraines from monthly to only getting them every five years. So obviously, I think it works amazingly. I take 120 mg per day, and I take extra if I feel like one is coming on. More recently, I also started taking 400 mg of magnesium, and I think that has helped as well."

For High Blood Pressure "I have been on Verapamil ER 180 mg twice daily. It was gradually increased from once per day. I've been on this twice-a-day dose for over 15 years and was doing great. Now I am noticing breakthrough high blood pressure again, and it's fluctuating high and low. I am now exercising, walking 2 miles per day, and some days my BP seems to be high, 170/98 or so, even higher at times, then at times too low for me at 90/60. I get weak with the low BP, but with the high BP, I am very sick. Not sure how to handle all this. I don't know if I am to take my BP meds when my BP is too low. But if I don't take it when BP is lower, it will soon go back up. I'm frustrated at this point."

For High Blood Pressure "I asked the NP to change my BP med from amlodipine to verapamil. I had bad side effects starting ten years ago, but there wasn’t a better replacement for amlodipine at the time. I read good reviews about verapamil and wanted to try it. It has turned my life around. No “Kafka dreams” anymore. My energy is better. My mood is better. It’s the right BP med for me. It may also help my mood that I’m in Tucson now and not in Northern Idaho anymore!"

For Migraine Prevention "I have only been taking verapamil for less than 2 months. It took 2 weeks before I got relief from my chronic migraines. It was a wonderful feeling until my ankles started to swell and I had intense pain in my feet, legs, and hands. I just started to wean myself off of this med and already have relief from the swollen ankles and pain. So, back to the doc to see what else she can offer. I hate taking meds and think I will try a chiropractor and see what they can do for my migraines."

For Migraine Prevention "40 mg per day is normally considered a very low dose, but is all that I need to prevent migraines. I tried just about everything else for years until I got on to verapamil. To me, this is a wonder drug."

For Cluster Headaches "Suffered for 4 years in a row from a very strong cluster headache, the doctors prescribed all sorts of medications, from migraine medications to steroids-based medications, until I met a brilliant neurologist who successfully diagnosed my case as cluster headache. After 2 months of using Verapamil, the headache disappeared for 3 consecutive years. I still suffer from mild attacks every now and then, but it is not comparable in intensity and frequency with my previous state. In brief, Verapamil is magical in healing cluster headache."

For Migraine Prevention "Was prescribed this medicine to prevent migraines, which I was getting several times a week. After being on these tablets for 3 months, I have had no relief from the migraines, either in frequency or severity, and have experienced side effects including night sweats, hot flushes, dizzy spells, and shaking."

For Arrhythmia "I was prescribed 120 mg (a low dose, I understand) 2 weeks ago for constant arrhythmia. I estimate I now have arrhythmia 30% of the time, and the feeling is much less intense. I am greatly relieved, although I still wonder what triggered this condition. No noticeable side effects yet."

For Cluster Headaches "Life-saving. 10 years of dealing with cluster migraines, then with research on my own and an understanding doctor willing to write the prescription. I am now able to function with a normal life. Within 7 days of starting 80 mg x 3 daily, no more clusters... Zero! Been on meds 4 months. Excited to enjoy life again!!!"

For High Blood Pressure "Was prescribed Trorprol and Lisinopril before they put me on this. The first two made my hair thin, so they put me on 180 mg of verapamil. So far, I have been on it for a month, and it definitely has reduced my blood pressure. If you have problems with hair thinning, I recommend this. I haven't noticed any hair thinning at all, and I have not experienced any side effects. I'm 19 years old, 135 lbs, and I'm 5'2. Definitely recommend!"

For Migraine Prevention "I have been prescribed verapamil for vestibular migraines that I have had for the last 8 weeks, with the only symptoms being tiredness and disequilibrium. I am still in my first week of taking it (4 days) and have found it great. It has cleared the lethargy and tiredness, and my disequilibrium has improved substantially. The only side effects I have had are slight dizziness if I move too fast or get up too quickly from sitting, and my feet have been feeling a little swollen at night, but nothing major. I am a 45-year-old male and normally very fit and take 90 mg of verapamil each day for a month, followed by 180 mg in the second month."

For Cluster Headaches "It does work really well. I have been dealing with these headaches for about 6 years now, and this is the best treatment yet. Headaches are not as frequent, I was having 4-6 a day lasting about an hour, extremely intense. Now it's down to two a day and not as intense. I do also take Imitrex when they are really bad, or if it wakes me up in my sleep. I noticed drinking a lot of water helps too, I hate these headaches and empathize with all of you."

For Arrhythmia "Have a slow pulse plus atrial fibrillation. Since newly diagnosed in 2010, have been happy with results. Pulse beating much stronger and a regular beat more frequently. My husband takes it for high blood pressure and atrial fibrillation and a much higher dose than I take. He has been on it for a long time with excellent results. Beta blockers and other blood pressure pills did not seem to work for him. All our bodies are different and respond to medication differently, but we are both satisfied."

For Migraine Prevention "I had my first severe migraine attack at age 7 and was rushed to emergency! Now age 40; and after having 2 kids, migraines became way worse almost every day! The only thing that worked was Excedrin Migraine, but I was fearful of the effects of long-term use of OTCs. Tried Botox, which was very expensive and only got rid of migraines during treatment; then they came right back... plus Botox side effects were awful. Topamax worked, but terrible side effects as well. My doctor recently put me on Verapamil 80 mg, 0.5 tabs, 3x/day and FINALLY a lifesaver!!!! In the first week of use, I still had migraines. In the 2nd week of use, slight dizziness for about half an hour after taking the med, but NO more migraines!!!!! Miracle drug! I have my life back!! Wish I had been introduced to this med years ago."

For Migraine Prevention "I have been having daily migraines with aura for many years. I tried different things until I was prescribed calcium channel blockers. I tried first amlodipine with encouraging results at first, but then having severe side effects. So, I switched to verapamil, where the positive impact on the migraines is a bit less pronounced, but I am practically free of side effects. It didn't solve my problem, but I can feel a significant improvement."

For Migraine Prevention "I have never had migraines, but 5 years ago, I suddenly had stroke symptoms with hemiplegia on my left side. I have very little residual from that now, but I would get twinges/pinches in 2 distinct places in my brain and was very sensitive to light, noises, and movement afterwards. Any concentrating on difficult things would trigger the symptoms, not a good thing for an ICU nurse. The only thing that controls it is 240 mg ER of verapamil. With that, I can work and live a normal life. I tried reducing it this year... big mistake. My symptoms returned... it has taken me almost 2 months to get back to where I was."

For Migraine Prevention "I developed severe migraines 5 years ago after having a brain aneurysm surgically clipped. 24/7 for 3 months straight. My neurologist put me on Verapamil. After 3 weeks of being on it, I was ready to give it up, but in the fourth week, it finally kicked in and my migraines were gone. I knew I could not live with these migraines the rest of my life 24/7. My neurologist explained to me that the blood from my heart was pumping too fast and too hard in going to my brain. In taking the Verapamil, pumping slowed down and took the pressure off the brain. That was five years ago. Just recently, they started up again and she had to raise my Verapamil from 120 mg to 180. I'm praying that it will kick in soon as it's been just under a month. Still having the migraines."

Isoptin (verapamil) for Arrhythmia "Not happy at all with this drug. 3 weeks on it and have extreme stomach pain, nausea, palpitations, very dry mouth, light-headedness. Would like to hold out to see if my body becomes adjusted, but can't function like this. My cardiologist is away, so I have to find a doctor who can help."

For Cluster Headaches "I have suffered for three years, at my wit's end I too did my own research, and after two weeks I am pain-free. The bad attacks stopped instantly, and the minor ones subsided after about day 7. I feel like I have my life back. I was exhausted for the first week until my body adjusted... but push through people... this medicine saved my life. I can even enjoy a glass of wine now and again!"

For High Blood Pressure "I took this medication for a week, and although it did help with my blood pressure, it made me very confused and lightheaded. I got so bad that I stopped taking the medicine and called my doctor for a different type of medication. Just wasn't for me, I guess."

For High Blood Pressure "I was told to take Verapamil once a day. The first day was fine, no problems at all. The second day (only the 2nd tablet I took) was horrendous. Within 30 minutes of taking the tablet, I began to feel very hot. Within about 40 minutes, I could barely stay seated upright - I felt so weak. Then I started to feel like I was no longer in my body. I became very anxious and felt extremely ill, to the point where I actually thought I might be dying! This continued for about an hour, then began to lessen. I didn't take a 3rd dose (unsurprisingly!). Months later, I was doing some research after having my DNA sequenced and found I have a metabolic disorder called TMAU (trimethylaminuria). TMAU causes my body not to process some chemicals properly, including some medications, e.g., Verapamil. I presume this is the reason I had such an extremely bad reaction to it."

For Cluster Headaches "I was misdiagnosed for years. I went to a sinus specialist and was also referred to a chiropractor. I spent thousands of dollars out of pocket having my neck cracked, often during attacks. Because my cluster attacks typically last about 3 hours, I thought the chiropractor was actually doing something. I also think it affected my marriage and that my wife did not believe the severity of the headaches. Finally, my chiropractor told me his treatments were not working. My neck muscles were tight, but my alignment was fine. I was experiencing one of the worst attacks I’d had. He sent me to the walk-in clinic, and a PA actually listened to me and she knew immediately what was wrong. She prescribed 240 mg Verapamil SR once a day, took me off Ibuprofen entirely, and prescribed Imitrex Nasal for abortive. I still get some attacks. I now go months with no headaches, and when I do enter a cluster period, the attacks are much less severe. I also use O2 to treat an attack before it gets severe."
