"Took this antibiotic for 4 days once a day. It got rid of the UTI but within a week of finishing I broke out in a rash on my legs and arms and in my hair that I thought was eczema. Plus I got a spasm and pain in my left kidney area and low back out so I thought the infection had not been cleared so I went back to the dr and he prescribed it again. I took one tablet and broke out in a worse rash all over my body. It’s everywhere. Hot ugly and I can’t stop scratching.it’s driving me crazy. How am I going to get rid of it? Another drug? Worse drug I’ve ever taken. Never again."

"This is my third time on trimethoprim (Alprim) for a UTI and it has worked every time, but UTI continues to slowly come back so got told next time I will be put on a low dose of this for 3 months! Never had any noticeable side effects. Recommend to everyone to please take with a good probiotic to minimise side effects, rebuild good gut bacteria and prevent thrush."

"I was taking 200mg over 3 days. On the second day I got horrendous neck ache, ear ache and a sore throat. I stopped taking it but the symptoms carried on. I'm going back to the doctors today for something else."

"At first I took a couple of Amoxcillin and my symptoms had nearly gone by the time I had my appointment. My doc for some reason prescribed me this. Took my first dose last night for UTI. Got up and nearly fell into the wall I was so dizzy. Couldn’t sleep at all last night until about 10 hours after taking the pill. Experienced anxiety, however I do suffer from anxiety but it’s medicated and generally ok. Still a little dizzy this morning and my UTI symptoms have started to come back :( Going back to get more amoxicillin!"

"I was put on Trimethoprim 200 mg tablets twice a day. After the 1st day I did get a racing heart but that stopped after the 2nd day but after that I experience feeling really really low, depressed, not wanting to leave the house and when I did I felt very shaky and nervous. I have never felt like this before in my life and I have never experienced this after taking any other antibiotic. I told the pharmacist about the symptoms/side effects and she told me to notify my doctor/GP, which I did, and she said that when I complete the course (I was on day 6 of a 7 day course) that after a few days I should feel better. She said she won't prescibe this particular antibiotic to me in the future."

"Dreadful! These were so bad my kidneys and bladder. Couldn’t urinate, weakness, dripping with sweat, couldn’t think or speak, trembling and breathless. I felt like I’d been thumped in the kidneys. I believe this is due to the fact that they increase potassium levels !"

"I was prescribed this medication, has I had sepsis about 4 weeks ago. They think it's due to, infected gall bladder which the duct is block with stone/s. I can't take any of the -cillin family of antibiotics, so was prescribed other antibiotic's 2 weeks ago. They didn't work, so prescribed these. The first day I was fine, second day started feeling yuck and not wanting to go out. The second night ruffled with anxious, horrible feelings which I don't normally have. Third day realised it was these tablets when looked online and read the reviews. I don't think these these should be prescribed at all. I'd rather have sepsis again than feel how I did in this medication. Avoid."

"I was prescribed a course of 3 Alprim tablets for a UTI and immediately noticed a few ulcers in my mouth half an hour after the first pill. I thought it was just the antibiotic making my immune system low and the next day had my next tablet. That’s when I started feeling much sicker and my mouth blisters much worse. I also experienced numbness in my left hand. I decided not to finish the course and so wish I had of stuck to my resolve but family said I should finish the course or the UTI would come back. About 15 minutes after the 3rd pill my mouth was on fire. My tongue, lips, gums all erupted into ulcers and I couldn’t eat or drink or sleep for the pain. My blood pressure is through the roof and I have terrible headaches. The doctor said I must have an allergy. Hand is still numb too. Never again."

"Since taking a low dose of this drug, I have had pricking all over my body. It feels kind of like shingles, though it's not. I am supposed to take for 3 months, but will have to call Dr. to get something different because of this side effect."

"I was hospitalised on day 6 of a course of Trimethoprim (Triprim) with a full body rash which then turned into hives, prescribed Prednisone which caused my blood sugars to rise considerably being a Type 1 diabetic. I spent a day in hospital, was to go home that night until a GP noticed that I was at risk of renal failure. That night I stayed in hospital and all of the next day. Previously, years ago, I had an allergic reaction to the antibiotic Bactrim and was told I was allergic to Sulphur. The GP knew this when prescribing Trimethoprim and I have been assured that Trimethoprim does not contain Sulphur. In my lay opinion, after the trauma I have been through I believe that the T.G.A. (who we are all supposed to trust) should take this drug "off the market" so that other human beings will not have to experience to horrors inflicted upon us. It didn't help, it didn't work, caused immeasurable damage, the dosage was 300mg once per day for 7 days."

"I have just finished a week's course of trimethoprim for cystitis. It cleared symptoms within a few days which was great but they made me feel unwell in myself. I felt nauseous all week and also felt achy and lethargic as if I were coming down with another illness. Once I finished the course, the nausea stopped but a day later I woke up to find an itchy rash all over my upper legs - basically an allergic reaction. These antibiotics certainly cleared the infection quickly but I obviously don't tolerate them very well. However, was on them for a week and I think that they can be prescribed for shorter lengths of time."

"Horrific. Woke up from a nap on the first day of taking with suicide ideas. Staying in an apartment and had balcony visions. Suffer with PTSD but not suicidal. Currently on holiday so panic disorder has set in but has been massively exemplified by this antibiotic. Was prescribed 5 day dose stopped taking after day 3. Still feeling side effects and wondering if I’ll return to normal or whether this is it now."

"worst experience for me because only yesterday I apparently have a uti which I don’t believe I do because I have none of the symptoms. This drug made me almost sick on the first round I had bad side pain still which was worse than usual, my back is killing. I have a headache and find it hard to wake up but struggle to get to sleep, ive just had my 2nd dose and I want to stop taking it because I’m in so much pain, I DO NOT RECOMMEND"

"I took this drug for the second time. 24-48 hours later developed an itch which erupted into a huge blister on my penis - is is a kind of allergic reaction called a Fixed Drug Eruption. Was send to Emergency Department. Later consulted dermatologists who confirmed rare and serious side effects t of this drug."

"This is my second course of Trimethoprim for the same urinary infection. Didn't work after 1 week and now the GP has put me on 2 weeks. Still uncomfortable and not at all confident it's resolving the issue, just masking the symptoms a bit."

"I was prescribed a 7 day course of this antibiotic, as the 3 day course of Nitrofurantoin did not work but I think they would have done the job if the course was for 7 days as I never had any of the symptoms I have with Trimethoprim. All the symptoms I had along with the UTI were awful exactly as others have described ie couldn’t sleep, felt very sick, was sick as just had no appetite for 5 days whilst in them. These tablets should make you feel better not suicidal. Had a terrible headache and felt weird and anxiety thoughts went through the roof ended up in A&E on the second day. I have taken 5 1/2 days worth and now binned the others and will take may chances. I will also let my doctor know."

"On the first night of taking this awful antibiotic I had really high fever, back pain and the most blinding headache. I had taken a three day course before with the same symptoms but thought it was the UTI itself . I thought I was having an embolism in my brain at one point . Now I know , after one night it is the side effect of Trimethoprim. I won’t touch these lethal drugs ever again"

"I took my first dose of trimethoprim around 6pm last night, I started with mild stomach ache about an hour after and by 9pm I began to get blurred vision and feel very light headed, at one point I thought I was going to pass out so had to stop what I was doing and lay down. I was then getting heart palpitations and felt very anxious and was having scary thoughts that something bad was going to happen to me. I had to get my ex partner round to come take care of my 2 year old son as I didn’t feel capable to do so! I was up several times in the night with a desperate urge to pee. I've woken up this morning still feeling slightly light headed and confused, I can’t seem to think straight. My body is very achey and I've had to come back to bed, hoping these side effects wear off soon. I refuse to take anymore tablets, I’d much rather have the UTI. I really don’t know how this drug is legal."

"This review is partly in response to the last review from Stardust: I just wanted to tell you, what you described with your experience I had the EXACT same reaction, so you are not alone at all. I was on 300mg 1 x day for a UTI and it completely wiped me out, I was exhausted from day one. I had pounding, throbbing headaches that were unbearable and dizziness especially getting up or bending over. As I continued taking it it just got worse. Day 3 I started getting awful abdominal cramps and pains in my lower back, stomach and legs, diarrhoea, vomiting and terrible nausea. My heart began to palpitate so bad I couldn’t sleep and my whole body vibrated and I could feel my heart beating through my body, it seemed. I got hot flushes followed by chills. it is honestly the worst antibiotic I have ever had and would rather put up with the burning when peeing of UTI than suffer these horrible, sickly side effects. Ask for augmentin or amoxicillin, don’t take Trimethoprim! Heed my warning!"

"I was getting daily migraines on this drug. Half-way through the course I decided to stop taking my daily dose, after a really awful migraine that I needed to take sumatriptan to clear up. Another doctor had prescribed me another antibiotic for UTI earlier in the year. I had no problems then."

"Had a water infection. 7 days of trimethoprim 200 mg prescribed by my G.P at one tablet twice daily. My infection did go but I felt so nauseous and spaced out after day 2 of taking them. Day 6 I nearly stopped as I felt anxious for no reason and wanted to eat but the nausea made it difficult ! Horrid side effects for me ……."

"Got prescribed trimethoprim for 4 days for a UTI. First dose felt a little anxious but tried to ignore it. Did feel strange for a few hours though. Second dose I didn’t feel anything till I fell asleep and woke up an hour or two later and was having weird visions/dreams, I don’t know what they were but they kept waking me up and when I tried to open my eyes they were shaky and I struggled to keep them open. Felt really paranoid, major dissociation and just not myself. Decided to stop taking after day 2, the UTI symptoms have gone away but it left me feeling off mentally and hopefully I will return back to my normal self soon. Avoid this drug if you struggle with mental health or sensitive to medication."

"Prescribed 20 of these to take over a period of 10 days. Half way through, symptoms of UTI have gone BUT I have awful giddiness and nausea with these. After about 6 hours it wears off and I feel great till I swallow the next one. Dizziness means it’s effecting work and head headed / stiff neck. Hope I don’t have to take them again as it makes me feel horrible!"

"Given nitrofurantoin at hospital. Bad reaction A&E gave me Trimethoprim 200mg twice day for 3 days. Fine first day and thought I was cured just felt bit sick but today no energy, very very nauseous and palpitations and headache. Don't really want to take this for another day. If I could actually speak to my GP it would be a miracle! Don't want to end back in A&E"
