For Urinary Tract Infection "I'm male, 49 years old. Apparently unusual for men to have a UTI. Was prescribed 200 mg trimethoprim x 2 tablets for 7 days, and within 24 hours, symptoms had gone. Unfortunately, on day 7, after I had finished the course, the UTI came back. On the last day of a further 7-day course and concerned it's not going to shift it."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed a course of 3 Alprim tablets for a UTI and immediately noticed a few ulcers in my mouth half an hour after the first pill. I thought it was just the antibiotic making my immune system low, and the next day I had my next tablet. That’s when I started feeling much sicker and my mouth blisters much worse. I also experienced numbness in my left hand. I decided not to finish the course and so wish I had stuck to my resolve, but family said I should finish the course or the UTI would come back. About 15 minutes after the 3rd pill, my mouth was on fire. My tongue, lips, and gums all erupted into ulcers, and I couldn’t eat, drink, or sleep for the pain. My blood pressure is through the roof and I have terrible headaches. The doctor said I must have an allergy. My hand is still numb too. Never again."

For Prevention of Bladder infection "3-day course taken after abortion, as I was concerned about infection. I began feeling unwell after starting trimethoprim, with nausea, headaches, stiff neck, sensitivity to light, and possible fever. Worried that these are signs of aseptic meningitis, which trimethoprim is known to induce."

For Urinary Tract Infection "This is my second course of trimethoprim for the same urinary infection. Didn't work after 1 week, and now the GP has put me on 2 weeks. Still uncomfortable and not at all confident it's resolving the issue, just masking the symptoms a bit."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Horrific. Woke up from a nap on the first day of taking with suicidal ideas. Staying in an apartment and had balcony visions. Suffer with PTSD but not suicidal. Currently on holiday, so panic disorder has set in but has been massively exemplified by this antibiotic. Was prescribed a 5-day dose, stopped taking after day 3. Still feeling side effects and wondering if I’ll return to normal or whether this is it now."

"I’m a 19-year-old female with extreme and random pelvic pain and frequent urination (up to 15-20 times a day). I was taking 100 mg once a day for a few months to rule out the diagnosis of urethritis. Within a few days, I experienced extremely bad headaches and quite a bit of hair loss. I decided to continue with the medication. A little over a month later, I began experiencing horrible symptoms, which were dizziness, a heavy feeling in my legs, nausea, clumsy hands, shortness of breath after walking or even just lifting a box, a tingly sensation on my feet, and chest pain. I contacted my doctor, and he told me to immediately stop taking it. Even after all of this, there was NO improvement in my urinary frequency and pelvic pain! I will not be taking this medication again."

For Bladder Infection "Oh my God, absolutely awful stuff. I've had anxiety for years, so I know my body and panic attacks, etc. Day 5 of these, and my manager had to call 999 as I genuinely thought I was dying. The MOST intense panic attack I've ever had. Heart thumping through my chest, faint, head spinning, hands and legs numb, weak... this was all after days of constant anxiety and dizziness. I've come off them and am still feeling dizzy, but hoping they'll wear off soon. Never again!!!!!"

For Urinary Tract Infection "I was hospitalized on day 6 of a course of trimethoprim (Triprim) with a full body rash which then turned into hives, prescribed prednisone which caused my blood sugars to rise considerably being a type 1 diabetic. I spent a day in the hospital, was to go home that night until a GP noticed that I was at risk of renal failure. That night I stayed in the hospital and all of the next day. Previously, years ago, I had an allergic reaction to the antibiotic Bactrim and was told I was allergic to sulfur. The GP knew this when prescribing trimethoprim and I have been assured that trimethoprim does not contain sulfur. In my lay opinion, after the trauma I have been through, I believe that the T.G.A. (who we are all supposed to trust) should take this drug 'off the market' so that other human beings will not have to experience the horrors inflicted upon us. It didn't help, it didn't work, caused immeasurable damage, the dosage was 300 mg once per day for 7 days."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I was prescribed a 7-day course of this antibiotic, as the 3-day course of Nitrofurantoin did not work, but I think they would have done the job if the course was for 7 days, as I never had any of the symptoms I have with Trimethoprim. All the symptoms I had along with the UTI were awful, exactly as others have described, i.e., couldn’t sleep, felt very sick, was sick, as I just had no appetite for 5 days whilst in them. These tablets should make you feel better, not suicidal. Had a terrible headache and felt weird, and anxiety thoughts went through the roof, ended up in A&E on the second day. I have taken 5 ½ days' worth and now binned the others and will take my chances. I will also let my doctor know."

For Urinary Tract Infection "This is my third time on trimethoprim (Alprim) for a UTI, and it has worked every time, but the UTI continues to slowly come back, so I got told next time I will be put on a low dose of this for 3 months! Never had any noticeable side effects. Recommend to everyone to please take with a good probiotic to minimize side effects, rebuild good gut bacteria, and prevent thrush."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I took this drug for the second time. 24-48 hours later, developed an itch which erupted into a huge blister on my penis - it is a kind of allergic reaction called a Fixed Drug Eruption. Was sent to the Emergency Department. Later, consulted dermatologists who confirmed rare and serious side effects of this drug."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I was getting daily migraines on this drug. Halfway through the course, I decided to stop taking my daily dose after a really awful migraine that I needed to take sumatriptan to clear up. Another doctor had prescribed me another antibiotic for UTI earlier in the year. I had no problems then."

For Urinary Tract Infection "This review is partly in response to the last review from Stardust: I just wanted to tell you, what you described with your experience I had the EXACT same reaction, so you are not alone at all. I was on 300 mg 1 x day for a UTI, and it completely wiped me out, I was exhausted from day one. I had pounding, throbbing headaches that were unbearable and dizziness, especially getting up or bending over. As I continued taking it, it just got worse. Day 3, I started getting awful abdominal cramps and pains in my lower back, stomach, and legs, diarrhea, vomiting, and terrible nausea. My heart began to palpitate so bad I couldn’t sleep, and my whole body vibrated, and I could feel my heart beating through my body, it seemed. I got hot flushes followed by chills. It is honestly the worst antibiotic I have ever had and would rather put up with the burning when peeing of UTI than suffer these horrible, sickly side effects. Ask for Augmentin or amoxicillin, don’t take trimethoprim! Heed my warning!"

For Urinary Tract Infection "On the first night of taking this awful antibiotic, I had a really high fever, back pain, and the most blinding headache. I had taken a three-day course before with the same symptoms, but thought it was the UTI itself. I thought I was having an embolism in my brain at one point. Now I know, after one night, it is the side effect of trimethoprim. I won’t touch these lethal drugs ever again."

For Urinary Tract Infection "No one writes positive reviews anymore, lol. I wanted to state that I had a positive time while taking trimethoprim. Starting off, I was a bit nervous about taking it due to the negative things I read online. Now, I am on day four of the medication, and I feel fine. Although I did crush this medication and took it with applesauce and a bit of syrup. This review is coming from someone that deals with mild anxiety."

"My teenage daughter was prescribed trimethoprim to treat severe bacterial acne. She was prescribed 300 mg twice a day. Within 2 days, it was clear that it did not suit her. She became very anxious, had racing thoughts, trembling, and a very low mood, she was crying all the time. Although she suffers from anxiety, she had been enjoying an anxiety-free period for a number of months. We decided to stop the medication, and she was back to normal after 2 days. We tried trimethoprim again recently, at a lower dose of 400 mg per day, but within 3 days, she became anxious, had a low mood, and very vivid dreams. We have now stopped this medication."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Worst experience for me because only yesterday I apparently have a UTI, which I don’t believe I do because I have none of the symptoms. This drug made me almost sick on the first round. I had bad side pain still, which was worse than usual, my back is killing. I have a headache and find it hard to wake up but struggle to get to sleep. I've just had my second dose, and I want to stop taking it because I’m in so much pain. I do not recommend."

For Urinary Tract Infection "I started a 7-day course, and by day four, I felt absolutely awful. The side effects of this antibiotic are horrendous. I literally felt worse due to the side effects than having a UTI. The most awful feeling of nausea, one of the worst headaches I’ve ever experienced, overwhelmed by tiredness and fatigue, tummy aches and pains, muscle aches and pains, and just a general feeling of feeling unwell. I can’t wait to get back to some normality again."

I took 100 mg twice a day for 7 days for inflammation of the urinary tract and inflammation of the kidneys. We are all different, I was afraid like you."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Had a water infection. 7 days of trimethoprim 200 mg prescribed by my G.P. at one tablet twice daily. My infection did go, but I felt so nauseous and spaced out after day 2 of taking them. Day 6, I nearly stopped as I felt anxious for no reason and wanted to eat, but the nausea made it difficult! Horrid side effects for me."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Tried Trimethoprim last year, and it made me feel very nauseous. I was hesitant to take it again, however, this time, I have only had mild nausea, maybe a headache, and a sore jaw. I think every experience is different. It cleared up my UTI, so I’m happy."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Got prescribed trimethoprim for 4 days for a UTI. First dose felt a little anxious but tried to ignore it. Did feel strange for a few hours, though. Second dose I didn’t feel anything till I fell asleep and woke up an hour or two later and was having weird visions/dreams. I don’t know what they were, but they kept waking me up, and when I tried to open my eyes, they were shaky, and I struggled to keep them open. Felt really paranoid, major dissociation, and just not myself. Decided to stop taking after day 2. The UTI symptoms have gone away, but it left me feeling off mentally, and hopefully, I will return back to my normal self soon. Avoid this drug if you struggle with mental health or are sensitive to medication."

For Urinary Tract Infection "Prescribed 20 of these to take over a period of 10 days. Halfway through, symptoms of UTI have gone, BUT I have awful giddiness and nausea with these. After about 6 hours, it wears off, and I feel great till I swallow the next one. Dizziness means it’s affecting work and a headache/stiff neck. Hope I don’t have to take them again, as it makes me feel horrible!"

For Urinary Tract Infection "Prescribed a 7-day course of this antibiotic, as the 3-day course of Nitrofurantoin did not work - don’t know if these have worked yet as I’m only halfway through. After the first tablet, I started to get a sore ‘thrush’ tongue, but this stopped when I took a probiotic at the same time as the tablets and a daily multivitamin (the chemist said this was okay). Other symptoms on day 2 - my legs/feet went numb and pins and needles. I went to bed, and luckily the symptoms had gone by the morning. Once my UTI has cleared, I’m going to look after myself, as eating rubbish and gaining lots of weight doesn’t help. Makes me more prone to UTIs to begin with."
