"After 18 months of extreme life stress, I could not fall asleep. I was getting mental health counseling and started taking a low dose of sertraline (50 mg), not sure it helped. I was diagnosed with acute trauma, anxiety, major depression, paranoia, and insomnia. My new general practitioner recommended I try trazodone, as I would only consider a stronger drug like Xanax as a last resort, I am very sensitive to medications. She prescribed 50 mg at bedtime. I started with 25 mg at bedtime. After just one dose and a great night's sleep, I woke up the next day feeling like I had just awoken from a very long (18 months+) bad dream. I am at a loss to understand how just one dose of 25 mg and one night's sleep had that huge impact. MIRACLE!!!"

"I was given this drug 2 years ago for insomnia after withdrawal from drug/alcohol abuse. This drug has changed me so much I don't ever want to get off of it. I take 100-150mg every night experiencing deep sleep with weird dreams that I like. A calm, hungover feeling in the morning which dissipates into just a calmness for the rest of the day. I think well, have lowered anxiety, and a positive feeling toward life. If you really want to be your old self you can still muster it from within when needed though, then return back to the comfortable altered state afterward when you want to."

"I started taking 50 mg about 4 years ago as I had a hard time going to and staying asleep. It worked for me. About 15 minutes later, I'm asleep, and I wake up restful and not grouchy. I used to be a grouch in the morning. After about a year, I felt it was not as effective as in the beginning, so my doctor upped it to 100 mg, and I've never looked back. Love me some trazodone!"

"I've been having extremely severe trouble getting to sleep and staying asleep (depression). My psychiatrist put me on lamotrigine and trazodone, and it worked extremely well. I slept for 10-14 hours. I stopped it because I was thinking about conceiving. I had to go back on trazodone because my sleep was very irregular. I've been back on trazodone for 2 months now, and my sleep is getting better slowly but surely."

"I have been taking trazodone for about 3 years now and I can't sleep without it. Before taking the drug, I would have 'night terrors' that would last up to 3 hours about 4 times a week. These 'terrors' would include crying, back arching, muscle tension, and joint pain. I have not had a 'terror' since I started trazodone. The best choice I ever made with my medication."

"Started taking it to help me sleep when I was going through intense anxiety. For that purpose, it worked very well. However, there was a side effect of feeling generally panicky all the time. It became so bad over time that I could not leave my house-or even step outside the door. I had to quit cold turkey after a month because this was so debilitating. After four days of being off of it, I was able to walk around my neighborhood again. But 3 months later, I still have trouble driving far distances. This drug almost killed me. Also, while I was on it, I had incredible anxiety-like my skin was crawling. Again, this ceased within a day or two of stopping this medication. All in all, it was a horror experience for me."

Trazodone "I have been on trazodone for about five years, ever since I was going through a nasty downward spiral due to my personal situation at the time and couldn't sleep for three days/nights in a row. The doctor who prescribed it for me was an 'old-time' doc who wasn't into unnecessary medication (or any, most of the time) but saw there was a need that day with me. The fact that it was also an antidepressant was also a plus (but ultimately it wasn't effective enough on its own for that purpose). Taking trazodone at night (50mg) plus 1/2 a typical Ambien pill helps me sleep a good five or six hours straight--beats the way I used to sleep and thought was normal for most of my life; waking up every two or three hours."

"Love trazodone. I was taking Ambien to help me sleep, but I would wake up after 2 or 3 hours. My doctor prescribed trazodone, and I sleep 7 to 9 hours a night. Plus, it has helped my anxiety. Totally recommend."

"I went and saw my doctor yesterday about my problem getting to sleep and staying asleep. I had assumed she would prescribe Ambien, but instead, she prescribed this 50mg of Trazodone. I took it for the first time last night and I have to say I was out within half an hour, but I did wake several times in the night, but luckily, I was able to fall right back to sleep. I did experience slight dry mouth, which was to be expected. I'm hoping it continues to work well, and hopefully tonight I won't wake up so often. The doctor did say that when I see her again in 2 weeks, she can always up the dose... so we'll see."

"For the longest time, I have always had little sleep. After being prescribed sertraline and trazodone to help me sleep, I have noticed a big improvement in my sleeping habits. I get 9 hours of sleep, and I actually stay asleep. The downside for me is that I feel tired and groggy throughout the day. Hopefully, I will find a new way to not feel this way, which I will share. I take 100 mg before I go to sleep."

Trazodone "I had been taking 30 mg of temazepam but after getting out of the hospital recently, I have not been able to sleep. My psychiatrist added trazodone 100 mg tablets. This is a moderate dose and has helped tremendously. The only downside to the use of trazodone as treatment for insomnia is the early morning hangover, especially during the first few days of therapy. It's not addictive. You WILL go to sleep, just takes a little time."

"The doctor prescribed 100 mg nightly for sleeplessness. I found I could fall asleep within 5-10 minutes (no more bedtime TV) and sleep wonderfully, waking up alert, feeling great, ready to go. However, sometime around noon each day I'd find my eyes getting blurry (no more reading). I cut the dosage down to 50 mg, same thing happened. I cut it down to 25 mg nightly and I still fell asleep in 5-10 minutes, stayed asleep, awoke refreshed and raring to go, and VOILA, no blurry eyes. Trazodone is a wonder."

"It does put me to sleep within 30 min, and I'm out for 8 hours. First few nights at 50 mg-weird body sensations, no help with sleep. I pushed through for a few nights, upped the dose to 100 mg and it started working. But, I had to increase dosing for this effect to hold. My last dose was up to 300 mg. Sluggishness too much to bear, so I tapered down, which was quite difficult-crying spells, anxiety, hostility, and rebound insomnia. But nothing else worked for mind-boggling, soul-crushing, why-can't-I-sleep insomnia, which then returned. I'm back on 150 mg, getting sleep thankfully, but do have a hangover in the morning. The hangover is a sluggish feeling. I force myself to work out first thing in the a.m., which helps wean the sluggishness, but it takes a lot of discipline. I've determined I'd rather go through this process for 8 hours of sleep, as opposed to suffering through the mental anguish of not falling asleep, up all night, feeling like a human failure. Trial and error with dosing."

"My husband is in a nursing home with dementia. He was given this drug as a sleep aid. He is now very confused and his balance is poor. He cannot stand on his own or even with his walker. He is falling almost every night. Our family is very concerned about his deterioration since taking this drug. The doctor's response was to increase the dosage! We told him no and insisted on removing this drug from his medication. Since stopping this drug, we can see improvement in his condition. It will take time to get it out of his system. I would not recommend this drug to anyone, especially seniors."

"A doctor prescribed this for me several years ago, calling it 'a nice little drug to have on hand in case you ever need to sleep.' Back then, my anxiety and depression were a lot worse, and it would take me two pills to get to sleep. Now, just taking half of one helps me sleep through the night. I'm not up at 3:00 a.m. for the fastest bathroom trip ever. I can sleep through things, have less wild and manic dreams, and wake up more rested. I'm a fan. Many times I do not take it, I'm going through some medical issues now and realized again how helpful it was to me."

"I have severe anxiety and, as a result, I have constant intrusive thoughts, mainly as I try to sleep. I take anywhere from 50-100 mg every night with absolutely no side effects, and it provides an amazing night's sleep for me. There have been occasions where I'll skip a dose or two and jump back on it with no ill effect. The only thing I regret is not trying this amazing drug years ago."

"I have been having some serious sleep issues as of late. I can fall asleep fairly easily, but then wake up after 4 hrs or so. I asked my new doc for Ambien (which I HATE), and he said, 'Let's try you on Trazodone.' It has been a godsend. I take one just before bed and have slept through the night for several nights, for at least 7 hrs. NO HANGOVER EITHER! I've taken Ambien, cyclobenzaprine (muscle relaxer), etc., and they all make me feel horrible the next day...except for Trazodone."

"I was prescribed trazodone 50 mg while I was inpatient at the hospital. That was pretty much the best sleep aid I've ever taken apart from Nyquil, which I only take while I need cold relief too. (By the way, I've taken Benadryl for myself as a sleep aid. It's the exact same active ingredient as the stuff Nyquil makes and markets as a sleep aid. (Source: being obsessive over checking medicine labels). However, do not ever tell your doctor what to prescribe you. It worked well for me for insomnia (co-morbidities are anxiety and depression, post-traumatic stress disorder)."

"I use Trazodone for sleep - it is non-addictive, and it's been around a long time, so I have higher trust for it. Trazodone gave me the worst side effects for about 5-6 days. Skin crawling, I literally felt like I wanted to jump out of my skin. But on the 6th day, I woke up and that feeling was gone. 50 mg seems to be my magic number, I fall asleep every night with no hangover. But if I, for some reason, get less than 7-8 hours of sleep, I can feel the skin crawling again, but manageable."

"I was on Trazodone for insomnia, and it did what it was supposed to: I would fall asleep within 30 minutes, and I would stay asleep through the night. The issue I had with it is that I would sleep for way longer than I'd want to, and I would not feel well rested after I woke up. I would have difficulty concentrating, and my mind would feel like it was slowed down, and that would last about 4-5 hours after I woke up (and I'd already have slept for about 12 hours, so that's about half of a normal waking day that I'd feel I lost to Trazodone). If I absolutely needed to sleep, Trazodone was helpful, but also a game of Russian roulette: Would it be better to sleep but not feel rested, and feel sluggish for most of the day, or risk not sleeping?"

"I've been taking trazodone for almost three years at different doses. I started out at 50 mg, then 100, and now take 150 mg. I've taken some kind of sleeping pill on and off for 18 years but recently became dependent on them because of family deaths, relationship issues, and postpartum depression. Trazodone works for me, but it gives me horrible nightmares, so I have to wake up two to three times a night. I feel groggy the next day, and my memory has declined. I also experience extreme anxiety. I don’t know if trazodone is the cause. All in all, I would rather deal with the side effects than live with insomnia."

"Trazodone was prescribed to me to help me fall asleep and stay asleep. I take 50 mg each night as needed before bed. This medication makes me sleepy within 15 minutes of taking it, and I'm usually asleep in 30 minutes. However, in the mornings, it's been very hard for me to wake up because I feel the medication really affects me and keeps me still feeling sleepy throughout the day. But I'm overall happy with the results and would recommend this to anyone having insomnia or anxiety before bedtime."

"Got prescribed this while in the hospital for mental health and substance abuse issues. Non-habit forming, which is great, but I feel wicked groggy and out of it in the morning. I break the pill in half so I'm not as out of it when I wake up. The doctors advised me of prolonged erections in the morning. They were right."
