Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "This has been so scary I went to doctors for a routine check-up it turns out I have a UTI which they prescribe Bactrim. 3 days into the Bactrim I was not feeling good, light headed, sick to my stomach, my head and face were burning up on fire unbearable headache. Day 4 run a fever of 102.9 all day. Day 5 and 6 got worst couldn't even stand, couldn't sleep the pain was unbearable from the tip of my head to the bottom of my feet. Day 7 I made it early in the morning to the doctors to see what was going on turns out (as the doc called it a really DRASTIC allergic REACTION to this Bactrim doctor said one more day and I would have ended up in the ICU today is day 8 and I'm still sitting here in excruciating pain called the doctor back and waiting for an answer. I'm having trouble using my hands and very painful to walk. So my suggestion is if you feel ill after taking Bactrim see your doctor soon"

"I wanted to share my experience because I get medication anxiety, so I hope this helps someone. I had a bad UTI and previously had a horrible reaction to Macrobid (I think that’s how it’s spelled), so my doctor prescribed me the Bactrim. Reading the reviews, I was terrified; so many bad reactions, but I read one review that gave an excellent tip, and it worked for me. Before taking my medicine, I made sure I drank a full bottle of water and ate a heavy meal. Then I took the medicine with another full bottle of water and tried to drink plenty of water during the day. I was literally drowning in water! But it helped. The only side effects that I experienced were a slight upset stomach and I would have to go to the bathroom after taking it, but nothing excessive. And since I drank so much water, I had to pee all the time, but it’s what helped me. Again, I have terrible medication anxiety; just reading the reviews made my anxiety start up. I hope this helps."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I took Bactrim once for a urinary tract infection. I can't remember exactly how many days I was instructed to take the pill, but I know it was over a week. Everything was fine up until the 9th day, then my entire body broke out in hives."

Bactrim DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I had 3 UTIs this year so far, first in February, got cephalexin prescribed for 7 days. It returned in June, got prescribed ciprofloxacin for 5 days. It had returned in August. I asked the doctor why this is happening. She said they prescribed me the wrong drug the first time, the first drug was resistant to the bacteria I had. (Really? Why do we pay doctors for?) So I got Bactrim DS prescribed now, I'm on day 3, got it for 5 days. I weigh 100 pounds, so I try to take the pill with Activia and Yakult, that helps with the upset stomach. I felt as side effects, dry mouth (because it dehydrates you), loss of appetite, tiredness, fast heart beating. Hope this works for me, can't be sick anymore because of the doctor’s mistake!"

Bactrim DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "No health insurance. Went to the ER for UTI and was prescribed Bactrim. UTI symptoms quickly subsided (didn't disappear completely but like 90% better), so that was nice. Then the Bactrim symptoms started. Oh man. I had a different set of symptoms every day. First, it was tingly hands and severe fatigue. Then I had a full-blown panic attack (depression and anxiety can be made worse by Bactrim apparently, so I tried to keep reminding myself of that). Last couple of days, I've had headaches and bad nausea. I'm on day 6 of my 7-day course now--gonna try my best to make it through the whole course, but wow, it's tough. I just hope these symptoms clear up once my pills are gone. It got its job done but made me miserable in the process!"

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "Was prescribed Bactrim by a walk-in clinic. Should've known better. After 2 days, I experienced some awful side effects - chills, fevers, night sweats, insomnia, diarrhea, and migraines - for three days. I thought I was going to die. After I finished my prescription, I got this terrible head-to-toe rash that itches like crazy. My UTI is gone, but it was not worth the rash and three days of near death. Does anyone know what I can do for this rash?"

Septra DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I have been having urinary tract infections for a while and have had them more than once. I have been given different kinds of medications to treat the infection- even ones that made my urine turn orange and stained my underwear. I have to honestly say that the Septra DS is the best I have ever taken (I asked for the generic brand from my doctor). I know it's huge-like horse pills, but after the first dose, I felt relieved. The first thing I noticed was that I didn't have to urinate that often and the pain associated with urinating subsided. I never had any side effects with this medication."

"I hate UTIs, must have had it bad because cranberry 100% real juice did not work! As always, this is what I'm prescribed. I hate that people had awful/bad experiences with the drug. I love it, it works every time!! Don't know if I'm allowed to say, but it sounds to me some might have had an allergic reaction or their body just plain didn't like it! But I've never had problems and am grateful for this antibiotic!!"

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I was prescribed Bactrim for a very painful UTI that I could not flush out naturally with water and cranberry. My UTI pain subsided after about 5 hours of the first dose of Bactrim, which is great. However, the side effects are not so pleasant. I have had chills, mild diarrhea, vivid nightmares/dreams, and extreme migraines. I am on day 3 of a 7-day prescription, but I am contemplating stopping after day 4 or 5 if the side effects continue. The side effects are still not as bad as the UTI pain!"

Slight right-side facial weakness, shaking, confused, and nearly paralyzed from the right shoulder through my neck. Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I only took 3 prescribed bactrim pills for a UTI over a 3 day period, By 3rd day woke up in middle nite feeling really bad no idea why. Chills so bad shaking whole water bed. Husband woke up took my temp was 105.4 I refused go to ER but did agree call drs office & they wanted meet me at office at 6 am. They walked me straight thru hallways to hospital to be admitted. After 3 days still didn’t know what was wrong with me but knew had leukopenia, WBC only 300!! So also had bad respiratory infection nothing to fight off infections. Called in hematologist & he knew in 5 minutes. It was the bactrim. Said he didn’t understand why they gave me such a strong med for a UTI, it’s so strong almost like a form of chemotherapy. But I was one of those ones that had the rare type reaction. Be cautious!"

Bactrim DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I had a UTI, finished an entire prescription of Macrobid. I noticed as soon as I finished the meds, my UTI symptoms came back - so it didn't work for me. I then tried Bactrim. The pain went away after 1.5 days of being on Bactrim, which was a huge relief, but it is now day 4 and I am suffering from nausea, cold sweats, chills, insomnia, and anxiety. It works for your UTI, but the side effects are unbearable after a few days."

SMZ-TMP DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I've just finished my treatment for a urinary tract infection. I no longer have any symptoms from the infection. The first 8 days of a 15-day treatment were fine with no side effects. Beginning the 9th day, I began experiencing a mild rash and itching, which seemed to begin on my chest and neck and migrated to my back. A bit of a nuisance but tolerable. Around the 11th day, I began to experience mild joint and muscle aches and a tender scalp around the base of the skull. Acetaminophen and ibuprofen have helped to overcome this, but by the 14th and 15th day, I felt like I had the flu, with no nausea but a loss of appetite. I took the last pill this morning, and by 1 PM, had to lay down with chills, aches and pains, headache, and a slight fever."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I woke up with a really bad UTI I called a doctor with Web MD He prescribed Bactrim for three days. I took a pill and the first day it got better. By the third day it stopped working. I went to work and I started shaking really hard and felt like I was going to faint. I went to the clinic in town and they tested my urine and said I had a pretty bad bladder infection still. So they are putting me on another antibiotic. The nurse said that they don’t ever prescribed Bactrim because it is so awful and the side effects are terrible. I was going to give this a chance but it is bad. I read all the reviews and I was like oh that won’t happen to me. It did. This is a horrible drug ask for something else"

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "Never again, first 10 days Macrobid. Still had infection. Put me on Bactrim. I was so sick after day 5. I missed 7 days of work, I think 10 days was too much. Had loose poop, nausea every day, dizzy, lost 7 lbs in 7 days, and the worst was the dry eyes and mouth. I felt like poo. I thought I would end up in the hospital. It even made me depressed! Never again!"

SMZ-TMP DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I am on the 5th day of my UTI. The pressure and bearing down while urinating is similar to labor pains. I'm out of state and visited an Urgent Care Center. The NP prescribed the generic Bactrim. I went back to the Urgent Care Center after 4 days, and she gave me 3 more days of the SMZ-TMP DS. I told her my symptoms were the same as my initial visit. Promised that the infection would clear with the additional pills, in addition to AZO, an over-the-counter pill to relieve the pressure. It's now day 5, and I feel like I'm on day 1. This medication is doing NOTHING for me. It's Friday, and I'm sure I will be visiting another Dr. on Monday. I just want to feel like myself again."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I am in my second UTI this month. I went to the doctor the first time and was prescribed Macrobid, and my UTI came back in two weeks. Now I'm on Bactrim, and it seems to work really well minus the headaches. I like it a lot better, and I feel like it's actually gone now."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "Took Bactrim for a UTI. I had never taken it before. At day 3 I started feeling horrible, short of breath and intense stomach pain. I had never had a UTI before so I assumed this might be just a bad UTI. Day 6 I was shaking with chills and could not pee AT ALL. Went to the ER, I had a fever, high eosinophils, and a very elevated creatinine. Turns out I had an acute kidney injury from bactrim. I was given fluids and I woke up the next morning covered in the most painful drug rash. That rash lasted two weeks. Not to mention I was put on prednisone for the rash and because I had interstitial nephritis. The prednisone drove me out of my mind. Awful experience."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I have a chronic UTI that has spread to my kidneys and, 2 times, septic. 1-3 UTIs per month for the last 4 years. Bactrim never worked... I am told it is used frequently for gram-negative bacteria. Finally, a university hospital lab found it was gram-negative E. coli ESBL. Bactrim is not usually effective on ESBL."

Bactrim DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I have been suffering with a UTI for at least a month and a half. I have been prescribed nitrofurantoin and Cipro 2 times. With those drugs, I still had the urge to urinate, and immediately when I stopped those two antibiotics, the symptoms came right back. Doctors were getting ready to send me to a urologist until I mentioned Bactrim. After one dose of the antibiotic, I was feeling 80% better. I haven't had any side effects yet, and it's day 2. This drug is God-sent!"

I'm on the second day and have a horrible migraine. My spine hurts to walk, severe leg cramps, joint pain too. It's awful. I will know now to never take this again. My body did not react well. The side effects are not worth it. Next time, I will be sure to tell my doctor to never prescribe me this again!"

SMZ-TMP DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "It helped my simple UTI almost immediately and completely, but I had side effects that I've never experienced with any other drug. My face was extremely red (like a bright, painful red that felt like a bad sunburn) all over for the entire time, plus a week after I stopped taking it. I felt extremely anxious and jittery, and I didn't get a good night of sleep for a week after I stopped this med. I should add that I had all these side effects when I only took the drug for 3 days! I've never experienced side effects with other antibiotics. I believe this is a sulfa-containing drug, and I guess I must have a sulfa allergy."
