Bactrim DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I had possible Strep throat. First day I took it my fever rose to over 102. I was shaking, chills, rash. My blood pressure (and I have high blood pressure) was 100/55 and my pulse was 50, I was not feeling well at all. I called doctor next morning and he switched me to Amoxicillin. I hope it works better. Now I have a under the skin rash all over and am itching. Guess I am allergic to this one."

"I was prescribed sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim for a bacterial infection. The first pill I took about 7 p.m. and I couldn't sleep all night, I was wide awake and felt as though a train was running through my muscles. The pain was so severe that I felt as through I was going to die. I couldn't tell if it was helping my infection or not since the pain was so severe. I have not taken another dose as nothing is worth that much pain. I will never take that antibiotic again."

"I started this medication sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim five days ago for urinary tract infection. It was a three day dose. I finished it two days ago, but have felt very weak, anxious, and bad headaches. Im not sure if this is normal now that I have finished the medicine."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I had a bacterial infection and feeling ill, and the doctor prescribed Bactrim. I didn't think it was helping as my illness took a turn for the worst. I had fever, chills, muscle weakness and pain, stomach pain, and I couldn't get out of bed. I'd start to feel better after a few hours and thought it was finally working. Nope. I took my next dose of Bactrim and all the symptoms came back full strength and I was severely ill again. I finally linked it to Bactrim and stopped taking it. My symptoms cleared up over the course of a few days. I learned my grandmother and mother have a severe sulfa allergy, and I found out the hard way I do too. Words just don't describe how sick I was on this medication."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "My father was given Bactrim for a bad urinary tract infection and it put him into Kidney Failure. My daughter took Bactrim for a staph infection under her arm and she was so sick she could not get out of bed for most of the treatment time. Avoid this if at all possible and make sure your doctor is aware of all of your diagnoses. I did do it's job, especially with my daughter, she could see results the next day"

"***Do your research before taking this medication (sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim) ***I was prescribed this medication for an ear piercing (rook) that rejected. I was supposed to take it for 10 days/2x daily. The first 3 days, no symptoms; however, the next two days I started feeling like I was coming down with the flu/cold. I experienced body aches, low grade fever, headaches and a mild sore throat as well as some unsteadiness. After experiencing these side effects, I stopped taking the medication. I’m waiting for my doctor to contact me with further instructions. But I will not be taking the remaining pills and I’m never taking this medication again. BTW: My ear looks and feels much better."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "First time I got MRSA it started as a small pimple under my arm and quickly became a massive abscess over night. I went to the ER and doctor told me it was MRSA and prescribed me 10 days worth of bactrim. With in four days the infection stopped and the wound started to heal. It was completely healed before then ten days but I took all the bactrim as directed by the doctor. Then about 7 days ago I noticed a large pimple and got it checked it and it was MRSA again but my whole leg was swollen. They lanced it and gave me another ten days of bactrim. I'm about five days in and the swelling has resided and the pain is much less. No side effects other then a constant headache and abdominal cramps. Seems to work good for MRSA and staph infection"

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I was prescribed Bactrim and Keflex to treat an traumatic force injury to my shin which a month later turned into a bacterial type infection. I was on these 2 anitbiotics for 3 doses (100 mg Bactrim) and I got small spots of hive-like bumps under both forearms, on my hand, and on the backside of the injured shin. They took me off those antibiotics and without taking any other medicines yet that day, approximately 8 hrs later I looked like I had the chicken pox. It's Day 3 after stopping Bactrim and I'm just starting to get some relief from the intense itching ( I did have a steroid IV today to try to help this)."

Septra (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I am taking Septra for an infection on the tip of my nose. Day one was horrible. Nausea, fatigue, and vertigo {felt like a flu}. That lasted one day. Day 2-7 has been without issues. I take it with a meal and a good 12-16 ounces of fluid. 3 days to go and I expect that will be fine. My infection appeared much better by the 4th day."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I was prescribed Bactrim to treat stenotrophomonas maltophilia in my lungs. I have had a persistent cough for 4 years and this bacteria was found after having a bronchoscopy. My cough got better but the medication caused a ganglion cyst I have in my hand to become very inflamed and painful. The cyst is in the palm of my hand at the base of my middle finger. The finger became so painful I could hardly bend my finger. When I stopped taking the medication it went away. I did complete the course of treatment because it was important to me to get rid of the infection but that was my only side effect."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I saw so many negative comments and got so scared but my doctor insisted that I'll be okay, and it really was okay for me. I was taking it for intestinal bacterial infection, since nothing helped me for a week and I felt horrible. This helped me right away, after first dose. I was taking it for 5 days and I was completely healthy after just 2 days of taking it, along with some probiotics and other medications."

"I’ve been taking this for a UTI, and I believe its helping with that but honestly all the side effects are taking over to the point where my UTI is the last thing I’m thinking about. MAJOR nausea I have to lay in bed all day, it always feels like I could vomit. It’s made my anxiety so bad, I keep having panic attacks at night and it has kept me up all night thinking. My nausea has been the worst at night, too, so really not getting much sleep. Really not worth it"

"Been taking this sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim for 5 days now due to strep. I was fine until today. Now my body aches all over, my joins keep popping and ache, as well as my muscles, I have jaw pain, and headaches. Don't know if this is the bacteria die-off symptoms and I should keep on? Calling doctor tomorrow. If I know I'm not in serious trouble will keep going. But don't know if this is an allergic reaction or something completely normal when destroying the bacteria in your system."

"I used bactrim as part of a bacterial infection I got from my sinuses. I HAVE NEVER NEEDED TO DRINK MORE WATER IN MY LIFE. I went through roughly 4-6 bottles of regular sized water every single hour ( think normal grocery store brands). I took this medication for a week and a half. This resulted in me drinking around an entire 48 pack every single day. It sounds ridiculous, it really does, but that’s how much I drank. To this day I’m well, the antibiotic helped me so much but I still can’t believe how thirsty it made me. If I didn’t drink a bottle of water around every 10 minutes or so, my mouth and throat would completely dry up and I wouldn’t hardly be able to breathe. Never experienced anything like that, I felt like a manic OCD with my compulsion just being “water drinking”."

"I had to stop taking it after 5 days. I hadn't had panic attacks in years and I do take zoloft for them. I appreciate reading other's experiences because I really thought I was losing my mind. I haven't had any for 4 days and still feel a little off. Now I'm probably fretting over how I feel...which isn't good if you're prone to panic!"

"My doctor put me on Sulfamethoxazole in hopes of clearing up a mild but reoccurring skin infection under my arms. I was instructed to take 2 pills per day for 2 weeks. My first, second and third day I felt okay, but the fourth - ninth day (today) I have felt very tired, shaky and dizzy. When I turn my head a certain way, or lay down, I feel as if I spun in a circle ten times, then stopped. I called today, and spoke with a nurse who assured me that I would have had the side effects the first or second day. Well, I know my body and I don't feel right. So today will be my last day on this."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I was given a three day supply of bactrim for my post vasectomy recovery. I've just finished the second of two days and so far so good. One side effect though, and it may be an accidental benefit, it's cleaning me out- in fact everything feels better and things are more normal in consistency. I haven't increased or changed my diet in the last few days, just increased output and I feel better overall."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "Being Immuno-compromised by steroids taken for another ailment, I contracted a bacterial infection (Disseminated Nocardiosis) that spread throughout my body - brain, kidney, lung. (AKA: Sepsis) Initially I was hospitalized on an IV of a liquid form of Bactrim for 30 days followed by 11 months on oral Bactrim at 3200mg/day. No noticeable side-effects. It saved my life."

Bactrim (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I have a small either cyst or some type of mass on back of neck under skin. Doctor said it could be due to some type of staph. He prescribed me Bactrim aka as sulfameth.trimethoprim. He said two weeks to take this and if it does not go away we will need to Lance it. Which in a way I'm glad, it bothers me. Anyways I went to pharmacy to get my medicine and went home. I actually started the same day taking my pill. Friday Saturday and Sunday I felt ok. But come Monday about 3 am I got up and had diarrhea, multiple times I felt nauseous & achey . 7 am I felt it in my throat I vomited and after that I had a horrible headache. Can't eat, I feel as though my joints are stiff. Doc is changing my meds. No sulpha again !"

"Online doctor prescribed this for my UTI. After day 1 my symptoms are (1) periods of lethargy, feeling drowsy, napping, significantly lower energy/motivation (2) insomnia (unable to sleep more than 3 - 5 restless hours a night; I was already a light sleeper before UGH); (2) stomach pain. I already had acid reflux issues but now my stomach will feel bloated and painful. DEF take with A LOT OF WATER and Food to prevent side effects. I took a giant horse pill 2x a day. I think this dosage is too big for me (I'm 100lb). I have 2 days left and cannot wait for this to be over. I've been unable to concentrate, working/getting anything done is basically impossible (I almost called in sick today, but I WFH due to COVID so was able to nap when needed). I didn't know antibiotics could have so many side effects. The older UTI antibiotics, I didn't have any side effect so missing that experience. It is making the UTI better tho. I do not recommend this based on my experience."

Bactrim DS (sulfamethoxazole / trimethoprim) "I have chronic bacterial skin infections and my dermatologist put me on bactrim ds. It did the job. Got rid of the infection but the side effects was why I had to stop. It caused me to have blood in the stool, so she switched my medicine and now I feel the infection coming back. Guess we got to find another antibiotic."

"This sulfamethoxazole & trimethoprim antibiotic combo medication took away some symptoms of a UTI. Normally, I am prescribed macrobid which I notice works miraculously hours after taking the first tablet. I moved and have a new doctor who prescribed me this medication instead of macrobid. I decided to try it and hoping it would work even better than macrobid. It took 3 days of treatment until I notice my symptoms of a UTI subsiding. After taking a final tablet of treatment, a day later symptoms of a UTI returned. Had stomach issues, itchy skin and felt hypersensitive to touch. Will not be using this medication again."

"I was put on bactrim for acute prostatitis. I took it for two weeks and I have never been sicker in my entire life. I had jitters, sweats, severe nausea and vomiting. I would deal with that but I have had uncontrollable anxiety and muscle pain in the back of my legs. I have been off of it for a week and the leg pain and anxiety are still out of control. Caused a mild rash on my sides after taking it. This is the worst thing I have ever taken. I have been in the emergency room three times while on this. Was told by doctors to finish two weeks worth. I will never take this again."
