"TLDR; This drug can be a nightmare. I finally went to the doctor for my mild UTI. Water just wouldn't kick it. After my first dose, I was immediately thankful that I had gotten it. To my surprise, after taking the first dose, it seemed my infection had spread to my bladder. That night was awful: bladder spasms and private area burning like fire. Before I took the medication, I only had slight burning with urination. The next day I pushed water like crazy and thought I was getting better. The meds made me speedy. I was in a fog but was getting things done. I felt very sickly. I thought, again, that it was a good thing I got the antibiotics because my infection must be super severe to make me this ill. That night, I got very short of breath and my heart was pounding. I thought I may have caught COVID. I tried to sleep. Through the night I was awake with awful thoughts of death and severe anxiety. The next morning, I woke with my heart pounding and severe anxiety. I felt like death still."

"I hope my information can help someone! Here's my story: I was put on Bactrim for 7 days for a UTI. It helped my symptoms, but my urine looked off. I finished the course, there was blood in my urine, but no infection. UTI symptoms back. I went to the doc and begged for another course of Bactrim. I had bladder spasms, and that urine color came back. I thought I was doomed for IC. Weird until I researched and found out that Bactrim can cause bladder spasms and blood in urine! I stopped the antibiotic (ask doc first) and decided to detox my liver with turmeric tea (recipe online). Currently symptom-free!! Not sure why docs prescribe this if the side effect is blood in urine, it could be dangerous if you think blood is from infection! (For me, it was dark tea color.)"

"This medicine is rough. I was prescribed it for UTI. I had never read about it until now. I’m pretty sure my UTI is gone, thankfully. But I have felt absolutely awful the whole time. I thought it was due to the UTI, but after reading, I think this antibiotic is actually causing my symptoms. I’ve had severe fatigue, terrible headaches, and brain fog. I just feel so bad. I can’t stay out of bed for too long. I took my last pill yesterday, so hopefully these side effects go away soon now. In the future, I will ask for a different antibiotic just in case. I give this medication a 6 because it did seem to clear up my infection. But the side effects are terrible."

"I often suffer from UTI. And Bactrim Forte is the antibiotic that I usually use to treat them. The only side effect that I have noticed is headache, with a little nausea and dizziness. I also take Ultra Levure with antibiotics to avoid a yeast infection."

"Not a good option for me. I will never take it again. I was prescribed Bactrim for a recurring UTI. I think I may have taken it before and done fine, but not this time. I took my first pill in the evening and vomited. I didn’t really think much about it. I have the lap band, so that’s not all that unusual. I took my second dose the next morning and started going about my day. I started feeling body aches in all of my joints within four hours, with a slight headache. By the afternoon, I couldn’t tolerate light. I had a high fever and was short of breath. I was itchy, and some of my skin tags had become swollen and irritated. Every cell in my body hurt like I had been beaten with a bat. It was miserable, and I felt like death. Those symptoms lasted all night. The headache was the most debilitating part for me. Kind of afraid to take the new RX after that experience."

"I was prescribed Bactrim for a UTI. Day one, I thought I had the flu. Day 2, I could barely walk. Joints hurt very badly-ankles, knees, wrists, and shoulders. I stopped taking this medication. Called the doctor to prescribe something else."

"Bactrim was the worst antibiotics I have taken. I was prescribed this medicine for a UTI from the Dr, and I took one pill before I went to bed and felt fine. It was like 4 am when I got hit with a massive headache from hell. I could not sleep, and then about 2 hours later, around 6 am, I started vomiting until all I could vomit out was my stomach acid. Horrible! That day, I still had a bad headache and was nauseous all day. I discontinued the pill and flushed them all down the toilet!"

"I'm on day 2 of treating a urinary tract infection. I have been trying my best not to puke. I'm so nauseous, tired, and dizzy. I've had an irritation from my UTI, it hasn't cleared up yet, so I will have to see what the rest of the week brings. I've never had problems with antibiotics before."

"I'm on day 5 of Bactrim, and it sure is hard work. I don't know what makes up Bactrim, but its side effects remind me of an opiate! I am 18 and go to the gym every day, and I cannot work out properly anymore. I'm so dizzy and tired, I also have this weird mind fog. I did 7 miles on the bike at the gym today, and boy, did that take a lot out of me. This medication really sucks. I recommend drinking lots and lots of water."

"I had a UTI for about a month. I was on Cipro for 10 days and Bactrim for 10 days. I went for a urinalysis and was prescribed Bactrim. I have only been taking it for 3 days and am already starting to feel way better. The only downside is that I've noticed that my urine is very smelly and brightly colored. I'm hoping that I feel back to my normal self within the next few days."

"Was on 2 doses of Bactrim for 7 days for UTI. After 3 days, the UTI symptoms were much better -- but I developed nausea and worse, a dizzy/spinning feeling that made me unable to drive and had to miss work. The dizziness stopped after about 24 hours of not taking the drug. Never again."

"This antibiotic works quickly to get rid of UTI, but my main side effects are stomach pains and loss of appetite. I have one more dose to take, and then I’m finished, thank God. I’m taking the 800 mg."

"Had a three-day course for UTI. No reaction at all. After one pill and a good night's sleep, I felt a whole lot better. I don't like taking drugs and frequently have very strange side effects. Not with this one. It only helped."

"I don't know why I get chronic UTIs, but I do, and most of the time I'm prescribed Bactrim DS. I'm 41 years old. I had a UTI so bad once it spread to my right kidney and I had a 104 temp, the shakes, hot and cold, etc. OMG, it was so bad! I remember in the ER they took me back immediately because my temperature was so high. Anyway, Bactrim DS works really well for me. I was prescribed ciprofloxacin once, and I didn't like it and got really itchy, and it didn't work quickly like Bactrim does. Bactrim gives me relief on day one."

"I've been taking Bactrim since Friday, it's now Sunday. My doctor told me it's a urinary tract infection, but the only symptoms I'm having are the urge to pee with little urine. Vaginal itching that comes and goes with discharge. I'm ready to stop the medicine, but I know I can't. I've missed two doses because the side effects are me feeling dizzy, feeling nauseous, a bad headache, and loss of appetite. I don't know what to do. I feel like if I stop taking it for a possible UTI, it won't go away. But I don't feel it's a UTI 'cause I'm not having burning when I pee, only after I pee, I have an itchy feeling that I want to scratch with tissue, but I know I can't do that either. I really need help, and I hope someone sees this who can give me honest answers. I've been to the health unit and two hospitals, they've all given different results."

"It worked the first time I had a UTI. No change in symptoms the second time I was prescribed this medication since it is a weaker antibiotic for UTIs. Didn't really have any negative side effects besides not wanting to eat, but I think that was just the demon from hell UTI."

"I started the Bactrim prescription two days ago. I was prescribed two pills a day for 7 days. You can feel the effects within hours, and it’s not a great feeling if you have not had a sufficient meal. This medication does cause flu-like symptoms. I have only slept 2 hours total. This is hampering my studies and leaving me anxious. I have never had sleeping issues, but here I am, restless and very paranoid more than half of the night. The short amount of time that I do sleep, I have experienced awful nightmares, very vivid and almost terrifying to the point of not wanting to blink. This medication is definitely a 0 in my book."

"Years ago, I had an allergic reaction after being prescribed Bactrim for a UTI. I had a rash all over my body, and my face was swollen. So, my advice to anyone else who has been allergic to Bactrim is never to take Trimethoprim antibiotic. Recently, it was prescribed to me. I was taken to the hospital by ambulance with a rash all over my body, prescribed Prednisone, which sent my blood sugar sky high. I am a Type 1 diabetic. Now, I have a 19 cm blood clot in my leg. BEWARE. I believe the GP, who knew I was allergic to Bactrim, should have known Bactrim includes Trimethoprim. I am not happy or confident with the TGA."

"Day one: shortly after taking Bactrim, my stomach hurt, so I took it with yogurt. Vomited five times during the day. Second day: same. Couldn't keep any food down. Third day, called doc; she said, 'Oh, keep taking.' After the most horrible week of continuous vomiting and diarrhea, I quit. In two weeks, I lost 20 lbs. This was a year and a half ago. My stomach hasn't been okay since; doc says an ulcer! Don't take it!"

"I shared my IBS symptoms with my primary care, and she put me on Bactrim. This medication turned my intestines into an explosive, uncontrollable nightmare. I stopped taking this medication because I cannot even leave the house. I have to wear diapers 24/7, and now I’m waiting on another GI specialist appointment. This medication is nothing but poison. Obviously, it has something to do with allergies to sulfate drugs, but my PCP didn’t review my records well enough to know that I cannot take sulfate drugs. I keep good medical records for myself, however, it slipped by me as well."

"I've taken this to treat and to prevent urinary tract infections, and it has helped me with both. The only reason I gave it an 8 is because if I don't take it for a while, and then I take it, I get hives. The next day when I take it, I'm fine. It just happens the first time. When this happens, I have to take allergy medicine to help it go away."

"First two times I took this, it was a lower dose and worked great for UTI. On a higher dose after standard antibiotics failed, I feel like I'm dying. Fatigue, nausea, dizziness, abdominal pain, just completely wretched all around. So awful I am probably going to simply go celibate as an alternative to risking another stubborn UTI."

"Short and sweet: I'm a person who suffers from pure OCD, panic attacks, and I'm allergic to all the cillin family. I recommend this medication. Note that everyone is different and not cookie cutter. Not every med is for every body. The only side effects I've had are slight pressure in the lower throat, a very slight increase in anxiety (but I'm medicated for that), and being overly tired. IDK what's up with the fatigue of it all, but it's a bad fatigue. Unnatural body weakness and feeling of lethargy. I would rate it 10/10 if it weren't for the sleepiness alone. It works though. It works so good!"

"I took this medicine for an acute bladder infection, and the 3rd dose something happened. I went into a panic attack, had shortness of breath, was hyperventilating, and my stomach was killing me, so I was racing back to the ER, and I was hallucinating. I kept seeing people jumping out in front of me while driving, but there was no one there. It was dark but not too dark, but I made it to the ER, and I got in right away just from having a panic attack and hyperventilating. I have no idea where this side effect came from, it was the weirdest, scariest thing ever, so the doctor gave me Cipro, which makes you feel awful."

"I took the full course, seemed fine. The next day, I was rushed to a hospital 2 1/2 hours away from my town because no hospital in the cities near mine would take me. I had Stevens-Johnson syndrome and was in the hospital for a week with severe problems with every mucous membrane on my body. Also, can’t have MSG and hydrogenated soy protein. There are other antibiotic allergies and sensitivities in my family."
