Senna for Constipation "After coming back from vacation, where my guts were not happy, I was 3 weeks of not having a decent BM. I felt awful and had a brutal headache. I read all the reviews, which had me concerned, but I was desperate. I’m 61 and weigh 125 (well, maybe 130 with the extra poop)."

For Constipation "Had an awful stomach bug which caused me surprisingly to become very constipated. I could just about manage to pass a very small bowel movement but not enough to feel fully relieved. I took a senna tablet at about 11 PM because I had awful stomach pain. At about 1 PM, I started to have the urge to go to the toilet. Senna is fabulous!"

For Constipation "This drug worked *incredibly* well for my constipation. Within 24 hours of taking it, I had basically cleared out my whole digestive system. The problem is it works *too well*. I had bad diarrhea and severe cramps for hours once it kicked in. 1 pill (half a dose) of Senna had me doubled over in pain and sprinting for the toilet for the better part of an afternoon. I'd much rather wait a bit longer for something like MiraLax to work, since that is always gentle and never causes any issues for me. Do not recommend."

Senna for Constipation "This works like a charm. I feel really bad for those who it doesn't work for or causes extreme pain. Seems those of us who suffer from chronic constipation, it really works well. I never have pain, works quick, and clears everything right out. I never have any pain while using this product, however, I do have to go to the bathroom 5-6 times after using it for the next few hours. But when I take this, it's because I really need it. So, I love it."

Senna for Constipation "This product works really well. I almost never get constipated, but I have quit smoking, and I was having this side effect. I had tried Dulcolax before, and it was a terrible experience with terrible cramps and urgent diarrhea. This medication was recommended by a friend. I was hesitant to try it, but I was very uncomfortable and desperate. I also had hemorrhoids due to the constipation that were healing, and I was scared they would return. I took 2 pills at 9 p.m., and at 4:30 a.m., I woke up to have a BM. The first one was normal, and I had to go about 4 times afterward, and it was diarrhea. I didn't have any cramping or discomfort. I just needed to be near a washroom for about 2 hours after it started working. I feel so much better now. No more bloating, the BMs didn't hurt my hemorrhoids, and I feel like myself again."

Senna for Constipation "I took two at 8 PM and then the next morning... nothing at all happened, just a few stomach grumbles. I think I may have to increase the dosage today, as it didn't work. I've had laxatives that work in 8 hours, really quick and really effective with 1/2 pills. However, this one you need to slowly build up the intake of tablets every day -.- which is a bother."

For Constipation "Senna works every time! It can take 12 hours to a day to work, but it works with no side effects except some cramping, which is good. I take 2 chewables for the first dose, then take 1 more tablet when I start to feel cramping with no bathroom luck, usually works an hour later. To make it more effective, stay hydrated with warm liquids, massage your abdomen, and place a stool under your feet when using the bathroom to help you go better. Natural and safe!"

For Constipation "Senna works really well, but you have to be very careful about dosage. Remember all those jokes about putting Exlax in people's food as kids? It's all Senna. If it's new to you, take the smallest amount, and then take a bit more if nothing happens until you have a bowel movement. Then you know your tolerance. Also, beware of Senna Tea, it's hard to regulate dosage. That was my nightmare overdose story. LOL"

Senna for Constipation "I took 1 tablet before bed for constipation as advised by a pharmacist (I’d had diarrhea on Saturday, then hadn’t been at all for 5 days - usually I’m every 2-3 days). The Senokot made me have a bowel movement the next day, around 14 hours after I had 1 tablet. Then I went again a couple of hours later. I started to feel quite sick at this point, really uneasy stomach, not much of an appetite. I still ate lunch and snacks as normal and didn’t feel like I needed to be sick - just crazy nausea. Then a few hours later, I went again, but it was more like diarrhea - then I felt VERY sick. I had to go to a pharmacy again for nausea relief (I was taking a flight to go on holiday, so I wasn’t going to wait for it to pass naturally!) - she gave me Pepto Bismol in liquid form instead of tablets - it worked like a dream and I’ve felt fine ever since. ADVICE: If you get the nausea (it was really bad) - definitely get Pepto Bismol to counteract it! So worth it."

Senna for Constipation "For the second time in a few months, I'm getting hives an hour or so after taking this medication. The first time around, they were really bad. The second time, as soon as I got the itching and a few hives, I took an antihistamine that helped with the hives."

For Constipation "Drugs spook me, so I try to be as 'natural' as possible. I've tried senna, but don't like it. What works for me? Prune juice! About 10-12 big gulps of prune juice - a couple of hours later, 'it's time to go' - and I mean go! It's amazing how well it works for me."

Senna for Constipation "Works well for me, usually 1 max strength tablet is enough, but I’ve taken 2 in one day before, morning and evening. I did get some stomach cramps from the double dose, but not bad enough to stop me from doing normal daily things. Personally, I prefer Senokot to Dulcolax, that was the one that gave me really painful cramps, so I have stuck with Senokot!"

For Constipation "Do not take this. I took one pill around 11 PM. Then around 1 PM the next day, I was vomiting non-stop and had severe abdominal pain. I have not been able to eat and am finding the easiest things to be impossible. I’m fatigued, weak, and still have bad cramping. The cramping is so bad that I can’t even stand up straight. It totally ruined my day. I hope tomorrow is better, but I will definitely be throwing this product in the garbage. Avoid."

Senna for Constipation "Was constipated for a few days, so took 2 Senokot, and nothing, so, 2 more a few hours later, still nothing. In desperation, took 2 more. This worked finally, with not too much pain, BUT now have had stomach tremors for the last few days, to the point of I've resorted to heat packs, etc. After doing research, have discovered this can be one of the rare side effects. Just an awful feeling, so never again will I take these."

Senna for Constipation "Despite the bad reviews, I've used this medication four times now and had an excellent experience. I think the difference is you have to drink a lot of water before bed (you'll definitely wake up to pee) and drink lots when you wake up. There is a sense of urgency, although the defecating itself is not painful nor should it be. I think people don’t drink enough water and get bad cramps! I have chronic constipation (usually 5 days) and was prescribed Restorilax by my MD. When it didn’t work, I used this instead. Don’t overuse as it’ll lead to dependency!"

Senna for Constipation "I have constipation regularly. Milk of magnesia gives me terrible cramps and makes me have nausea. Usually no BM. Miralax takes 3 days to work on me. Bisacodyl tablets react the same as milk of magnesia, except with horrible gas. Senna, I have normal cramping before a BM, it usually takes 8 hours to work. Very pleased."

Senna for Constipation "I take three before bed, and in the morning it works. It doesn't seem to have any bad side effects. I take a little pain medication, 1 Norco a day. Much better than Ex-Lax or the others. I have never had it not work."

For Constipation "I hadn't been to the bathroom for almost one week. My stomach was rock hard, and I felt so sick. I took three senna tablets at 7 PM. At around 2 AM, I woke up with the most horrible stomach cramps and gas. I lay on my left side with a cushion pressing into my cramping stomach until 5 AM. I had the most intense urge to poo. I barely made it to the toilet. I had explosive diarrhea. It was the most painful stomach cramps I have ever had, I sat on the toilet for an hour, bent over my legs, crying from the pain. I still feel sick and crampy at 6 PM. It did get the poo out, but it was horrifically painful."

Senna for Constipation "Senokot is an unpredictable laxative. I take pain pills for chronic pain. For years, I took magnesium oxide, which worked like a charm. However, I had to keep adjusting the dose, and it finally stopped working altogether. After trying other laxatives unsuccessfully, I tried Senokot. Began with 2 pills: nothing. 3 pills: nothing. I finally took 4 pills, and the next day, excruciating cramps & went 4 times. Stools were not soft, and I had to strain despite taking stool softeners (these have never worked alone, but I read that taken with Senokot helped). At my wit's end because nothing aside from enemas works. I eat prunes, plenty of fruit, dried figs, & tons of vegetables. I can't take the cramping side effect, which I never had with magnesium oxide."

Senna for Constipation "Worked very well. I’m on the toilet now. It didn’t work in 6-12 hours, it worked in 5, and now I’m going. My stomach hurt so bad. I chose this one at my local Walgreens. I also drank a little of the MiraLax powder, that made it work faster, in my opinion."

Senna for Constipation "I took Senokot, and it took about 9-10 hours for mine to start to work. When it did work, the experience itself is not the most comfortable, given slight cramps and a BM with a soft but foreign feeling consistency. However, it did get the job done, and I do not regret choosing this option. Would only recommend if constipation lasts for more than a couple of days, else, don’t put yourself through discomfort for nothing."

For Constipation "I suffered from trauma and a subdural hematoma that landed me in the ICU and hospital for 5 days. I was started on narcotics and muscle relaxants for pain and was not very active, both led to constipation. I was started on Purelax, an osmotic stool softener that is mixed in 6-8 oz. of liquid once per day, as well as Senna, two tablets/day approx. 10 hours apart. Used this way, the combination worked great other than my first BM, which needed manual removal. Once home, I stayed on both until I was more mobile and gradually decreased to one tab per day and then no tabs, and finally stopped the Purelax once I was somewhat back to my normal activity level. Like all meds, they have to be used properly and for the correct indication and application."

Senna for Constipation "My husband has been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer and hasn’t had a bowel movement for 4 weeks. His oncologist said for him to take 2 Senokot in the morning and 2 in the evening, plus he’s taking Miralax. He still hadn’t poo’d, but tonight he was miserable, and it has led to bleeding. He has more chemo tomorrow, and I will let his oncologist know that this did not work for him. The Miralax is still a good thing, at least to me and my family."

For Constipation "I just took a package of Senna laxative back to the drugstore and told them I felt like it almost killed me, and there should be a big warning on the package. After taking as prescribed at night with lots of water, I woke with extreme cramping and nausea. I crawled to the bathroom, where I lay on the floor because I was passing out. It was coming out of both ends, and I had no control. I was sweating profusely, and my heart was pounding in my chest. It was several hours before the feeling passed. It was terrifying, and I get the same reaction from any senna-based laxative. I don’t know why there isn’t a warning about this on senna medication."

Senna for Constipation "Took one dose and nothing. Took second dose, and that’s when the headache and cramps, and the stomach gurgles started. It sure cleared the pipes, but wow, liquid fire from within, and lived in my bathroom for a day. I was tempted to just sleep on my bathroom floor to make it easier. Once I thought nothing more could possibly come out, a new wave would hit. Can’t even eat crackers or it goes right through."
