For GERD "Holy cow, this medicine should be pulled from the shelves. I can't believe there isn't a lawsuit against the makers. I took this for GERD for 10 days. I noticed around day 9 that something was off. It is now 14 days since my last dose, and I'm a mess with side effects, including dizzy, brain fog, oh, the brain fog. I even feel like I'm getting a cold or something weird in my head. My ears hurt. I feel like I'm hungover or something to that effect. I had to go home from work yesterday because I was wobbly. This medicine is a nightmare. I hope these side effects end soon. I mean, how long can you actually have side effects? I feel like I'm detoxing. Horrible, absolutely horrible."

For GERD "I have had acid reflux (GERD) many times. First, I took Tecta 40 mg, which worked fast and great, but for some reason, it does not work as well anymore. The doctor changed my prescription to omeprazole 20 mg twice daily. I took it for about 4 days, then the terrible side effects came with bad diarrhea with blood, abdominal and chest pain, dizziness, it is so bad. Hope someone that has GERD is careful to use this medicine. Recommend asking the doctor for other PPIs."

For GERD "I was on this drug for 2 days for heartburn. Besides having heartburn, I am a very healthy and slim person. I am not normally on any medications. Two hours after taking the first dose, I had vertigo (intense spinning) from tilting my head. I also had the worst chills. Even wrapping myself in a heavy down comforter did not help. I thought maybe it would be better the next day and kept taking the pills. Again, two hours after taking the pill... more chills and vertigo. Heartburn seems safer than the chills and vertigo. I'll stick to baking soda and water."

For Hiatal Hernia "Omeprazole did reduce and control heartburn symptoms very quickly, but the side effects that I suffered subsequently were eventually unacceptable, so I stopped taking the drug. These included constant feelings of anxiety, an arrhythmic heartbeat, and occasional dizziness. I changed my diet to reduce heartburn symptoms. Less fat, less bread, less sugar, less carbs generally. Smaller portions. More fruit and vegetables. Giving in to temptation usually ended with a need to take antacids."

For GERD "I've been taking it for a week, started having mood changes, getting upset, mad, dizziness, constipation, and not able to concentrate at times. I stopped taking this drug. The old formula worked better, now I'm taking baking soda and water again."

For Gastritis/Duodenitis "I was diagnosed with gastritis in August. I began taking omeprazole and immediately experienced the side effects. Then I was switched to pantoprazole. I couldn't take these side effects. I decided not to take any medicine at all and just try with foods. It became hard for me to eat anything. I have the lump-in-my-throat feeling, and it keeps me from eating. Now I'm back on omeprazole, and the side effects are horrible! I feel weak, and the dizziness is way too much. I still barely eat anything, but I'm back to eating solid foods. Does this go away? I've been taking it for almost a week now."

For GERD "So I’m still going through tests to figure out if my acid reflux is caused by GERD or an ulcer. Nonetheless, my doctor prescribed this for me in the meantime because I literally wasn’t eating, the pain was too great after eating. Day 3, I started feeling the headaches, and I’m going to day 7, and I’m completely a nutcase. I’m already diagnosed with anxiety and depression. Also, it doesn’t help that I have PMDD as well. This did nothing but ramp it up to 100. It’s the nausea and shakes for me that really did it, and the headaches really topped the cake. The dizziness is almost constant. I loathe this, I don’t think it’s worth it. Please look into alternatives with your doctor and advocate for yourself because they WILL try to convince you that this is normal, that you’re being dramatic. You are not. Your feelings and pain are valid. You deserve better than this poison. (20mg 3x a day/7 days)"

For Gastritis/Duodenitis "I mean, I completely won’t knock omeprazole. It works. This is my second time dealing with gastritis and my second time taking omeprazole for it. Yes, omeprazole has side effects, and I know it’s from the drug because it’s been the same feeling both times. (Slight chest pain, trapped gas, dizziness, slightly elevated heart rate upon motion, and general unwell feeling). However, when compared to the worst side effects I get from gastritis (no appetite, constant nausea, cannot eat, I get severe anxiety that comes with it), the ones from the omeprazole definitely don’t seem so bad. I take it until I’m eating normally again and my stomach has healed, then I discontinue it. Usually about 3-4 weeks. All I can say is, yes, the side effects suck, but everyone’s different. My grandmother has been taking it for years for GERD and has zero adverse effects. Give it a shot, the worst it can do is not work for you."

For GERD "Just found this site today, and I agree omeprazole has made my heartburn go away, but the dizziness and worse than usual anxiety has got me saying no more. I barely drank very much alcohol, and the next day had a hangover way worse than I should have, and every morning I'm nauseous for 2 or 3 hours, so I think this stuff is no good. Zantac 175 seems to do the acid trick, so guess I'll stick with that."

For GERD "After the first day, started to feel dizzy and a bit unbalanced in the head. Now at day 4 and feel like total rubbish, I feel shivery, have a bit of a headache, stomach is still sore from what the doctor thinks is gastritis, so have had no relief from belching or acid reflux either. Muscles feel achy, and my throat feels a bit sore and have a bit of a dry cough. Could be GERD getting worse, but I’ve cut out coffee and alcohol and am eating smaller meals."

For GERD "I started taking omeprazole 20 mg over the counter 4 days ago for reflux that I could feel in my throat. Upon starting the first dose, I immediately became lightheaded, dizzy, nauseated, gassy, bloated, and had a bubbly stomach. I also developed pelvic pain, constipation, and omeprazole seems to have “blunted” my need to “go.” I feel like my insides are inflamed and not working correctly. Yesterday, on my third day of using it, I ended up in the ER because I thought I was going to pass out. I was driving and got lightheaded, dizzy, and severely ill. The ER ran all sorts of labs and tests and said I was fine. I stopped the omeprazole because I’m 100% sure it is that! Now waiting for these horrible effects to go away!!!"

For GERD "My symptoms were coughing up clear, salty mucus for over 3 years, then 3 months ago, a burning sensation between the ribs just above the diaphragm, pain in the middle of the back (the burning is what forced me to see the doctor two months ago). He put me on Lansoprazole for 6 weeks. The burning between the ribs reduced. Then the doctor decided to let me continue meds and changed to Omeprazole, one capsule at night. The burning sensation is almost completely gone. I have that feeling that food is stuck around the middle of my chest, something I never felt before meds. I have also noticed that during my menstrual period, the usual mild headaches turn into bad migraines, dizziness, muscle cramps, and body weakness. After my menstrual period, these symptoms reduce, except the muscle weakness and cough. :("

For GERD "Do NOT take this medication! I've been on it on and off for a while, but recently I've been on it full-time due to having to take antibiotics and other medication which affected my GERD. They do work for GERD, but at what cost? I've got awful insomnia, dizziness, muscle cramps, feel shaky, and extremely anxious. It's no coincidence. I mentioned to my GP about bone fractures and long-term use as I have osteoporosis, she just said, well, people are on them long-term! What an answer. They don't care. My mother was also on omeprazole and kept getting pneumonia, I again mentioned it to her GP about the connection with PPIs and pneumonia. He said he had never heard of it, but she can stop them. She did and never got pneumonia again! Slippery Elm is very good and a natural herb, try it, guys, what have you got to lose? We have to manage our own health, I'm afraid. Doctors are too busy. I have given it two as it did help with GERD, but it also comes back when you stop it, never again."

For Indigestion "My doctor prescribed this because I would have anxiety so bad to the point I would throw up every morning before school and always have to go home early. It’s worked so well! It does make me a bit dizzy sometimes, but I take it once every morning and I still get anxious, just not to the point I throw up anymore :)"

For GERD "So weird how a medicine simply meant to lower levels of stomach acid can cause side effects as devastating as 220 mg Effexor withdrawal. I can continue to live my life by willpower, but the brain fog, brain zaps, forgetfulness, vertigo, among others, really makes it a drag. I only took it twice. I took it at 3 PM, and the next morning when I woke up, I thought I was getting sick. Then I googled omeprazole and felt eased. No anxiety increase, but it has really slowed my thinking. Garbage medicine. Three points because it actually worked well for my heartburn. Maybe I'd use omeprazole sparingly, but I can't see myself following a daily course for weeks in any universe. Thank God it doesn't conflict with any other medication I'm currently taking because I'm really kicking myself for not looking it up before taking it or even purchasing it. $40 down the drain. I'm depending on Aspirin to keep going for now because, without it, the pounding heartbeat side effect really saps my energy."

For Helicobacter Pylori Infection "Given omeprazole 20 mg (mostly 2 x day) when I had some painful burning sensation in the upper part of my stomach. I was with that for about 2 months while they found the root cause of my problem (I was having tests and scans and all were normal). The problem was that it all took so long (COVID-related delays). But then, I found out I had H. pylori. So I got the antibiotics treatment plus PPI (30 mg twice a day) for a week. The doctor did not guide me on whether I should or should not continue with omeprazole (and nothing at all on the side effects). So I stopped it after the H. pylori treatment, and then I had a horrible rebound of the acidity (and terrible back pain, constipation, dizziness that took me to A&E, lack of sleep, nervousness, fatigue, shortness of breath). I had these effects on and off also while taking omeprazole. So back to omeprazole. In total, I had omeprazole for 9 weeks. Now, day 7 after stopping it and feeling better but now dealing with rebound symptoms. CAUTION SHOULD BE GIVEN BEFORE TAKING THIS MED!!!"

For GERD "I only took omeprazole for 2 days. I experienced lightheadedness and dizziness the 1st night when I went to lay down, didn't think nothing of it. But it's happened again, so I stopped taking it because this is the only thing that can be causing it, and my other meds have never done that. I hope the dizziness and lightheadedness go away quickly, as it is just such an awful feeling."

For GERD "I was given omeprazole 40 mg to help with really bad acid reflux. It helped relieve the acid reflux within days. I felt better as the indigestion pain eased. I started having some chest pain, heart fluttering, and bad dizziness. I didn't realize at the time it was this medicine causing these side effects. My chest pain got so bad and scary I went to the emergency room. I had been on the medicine for a week at this time. The hospital did EKG, blood work, and x-ray but couldn't find anything wrong and sent me home with naproxen 500 mg twice a day. They said it's chest wall pain. I still continued the omeprazole once a day as well as naproxen. My chest pain didn't get better. I was so puzzled and concerned about my health that I started reading reviews on both pills, and when I read the reviews on this pill and saw that others experienced the same side effects I had been having. This medicine has serious side effects. This is my last day taking this medicine. So thankful for all the reviews."

For GERD "I have suffered from GERD for a long time. I've tried everything under the sun with limited help. Lansoprazole works but at a high dose, but then came omeprazole. It worked. Holy smokes, my acid reflux was better. My sore throat and phlegm were decreasing, then at the 10-day mark, the side effects kicked in. Oh man, they're terrible. Dizzy, exhaustion, sleepless nights, anxiety, and sour stomach. I feel like garbage. Yeah, it's made my GERD better, but at what cost? I quit them 2 days ago, and hopefully soon these symptoms will go away. Horrible, horrible drug."

For Helicobacter Pylori Infection "Usual dose is 20 mg/day, but for H. pylori, I was given antibiotics plus omeprazole 40 mg twice a day for 10 days. My stomach pain was gone after two days. After seven days, I had to stop taking it due to lightheadedness, dizziness, anxiety, and nervousness, which started at day five. At day eight, the doctor changed me to pantoprazole 40 mg twice a day for three more days. The symptoms are the same but just less severe. I called out sick from work yesterday, day nine. I am just suffering it out as I want to be rid of the H. pylori. After I’m done with the 10 days, I will never take another drug in this family of PPIs (Proton Pump Inhibitors) again."

For GERD "I’ve taken omeprazole for years, and it has kept my heartburn away. Now and then, I’ve had to take Gaviscon as well after twelve hours. I’ve never bothered researching it, as I felt fine, but I have a new doctor now who questioned why I take them. He pointed out the negative side of taking them for so long and suggested I come off them gradually. I took 20 mg a day for years, and now I’m on 10 mg a day for a month, hoping to gradually stop altogether. Four days into my new lower dose and feeling fine. After reading all your comments, I realize my dizziness, stomach ache, tingly hands, etc., probably was due to the medication. After only a few days on my new low dose, I feel a difference already. Can’t wait to stop them altogether."

I’ve been taking it a few years, had to have an x-ray on my hips, and been told I have arthritis of the apex, pelvis, and spine, then, and of the bones, all down to this horrible tablet. Now started to have panic attacks, feeling dizzy and nausea. Would never take again, sticking to Andrews and Gaviscon."

For Indigestion "After suffering a stroke, I was put on clopidogrel and was also prescribed omeprazole to protect my stomach. The consultant then switched me to lansoprazole. After a few days, I started to experience balance issues, which I hadn’t had before. My GP has put me back on omeprazole, but I'm still having balance issues. I've been referred back to the stroke team."
