"I was prescribed these for a tooth abscess. After the first dose in the evening, I was extremely nauseous and drowsy. I then slept for the evening but within half an hour of my first does the next day I was nauseous again, and so sleepy and confused that I needed someone to monitor me (I'm 43!). I stopped taking them but still needed to spend the day in bed - after just 2 doses. They also give me very strange and unpleasant dreams. I asked my dentist to prescribe an alternative, which they did immediately and they are effective with no side affects."

"I started taking this almost 4 days ago for a dental cyst triggering infection / abscess. I can’t even lift my head off the pillow on a morning to get up with my teen daughter for school. I feel so lethargic which I wasn’t before starting them. I feel so awful, my stomach is giving me excessive hunger pangs which I know stomach issues are a listed side effect. Also had pain in what I feel might be the right kidney and keep drinking loads of water as recommended. Suffered with the heartburn too, plus headaches. However, my mouth feels better"

"Given metronidazole for a big dental abscess in Jan. It worked well. No nasty side effects. Week later the 'bad' tooth broke off , exposing the roots. So, back on the Metro five days. No problems with side effects. Root Canal treatment and all seemed well. 9th/10th March, abscess re-appeared. Hard to find emergency dental treatment here on weekends, but our lovely NHS came to the rescue. Local A&E saw me within 20 minutes. Talking to Nurse, the abscess burst. She prescribed Metro 400mg for 7 days, plus Clarithromycin 500mg for 7 days, plus Co Codamol for pain, though not needed it so far. Dentist said the jury's out until infection settles but recommended 5 days on the Metro was more than enough but to complete course of Clarithromycin. Still only minor issues with Metro, but the Clarithro is making me tired, with a bad taste in mouth"

"I was taking this along with amoxycillin for a dental infection..The side effects were extreme..Nausea and vomiting (bile when no food), severe headache, chills and sweats alternating, diarrhea, no appetite, could not hold food down even water, fatigue. Not sure why I had to take 2 antibiotics but will never take this again."

"Worst experience of my life. Most horrific side effects on this drug. Only had 3 x 400mg and had to stop due to severe nausea, racing heart and body trembling constantly. Felt like I was slowly dying and will never take this poison again. It did seem to be clearing the infection but the side effects are much too severe for it to be worth taking."

"Doc prescribed me metronidazole for 7 days dose = 250mg three times a day. After the 2 first days I've started to feel confused with nearly constant headaches and head pressure I've never felt this before, the next days the brain fog is even harder, making me feel zombie-like, still constant headache and nausea, at least the abscess started to shrink but after I finished the course it grew back. 2 weeks after I still have the brain fog, headache and tension in the back and around the temples, I'll never take this drug again it's a nightmare I wonder when the effects will stop. Talk with your doc before taking it!!"

"Awaiting root canal but very bad toothache. Took this medication with Amox and after 1 day pain lessoned by 90% and this felt amazing. Felt sick as a pig, slept a lot and was mega moody BUT this was better than the pain for sure. Just 4 tablets left and can't wait to finish so this sickness goes away. Yuk"

"Went to the dentist June 14th, with Toothache, had some x rays taken, and saw there was an abscess on one of my upper right teeth. Prescribed me with 200mg, 3 per day of metronidazole which I have had before. By the Thursday evening the right side of my face was swollen, and Excruciating pain. Friday was no better. Today, (Saturday) swelling and pain had subsided a lot, but still there, especially in the jaw at the bottom. Hoping that by Monday, last day of taking them the abscess would have gone completely. Back to the dentist in 3 wks time either to have root canal or have the tooth extracted."

"So I got these pills from my dentist for a infected tooth although they warned me to not drink alcohol with the tablets they did not warn me that I would be feeling like I had been hit by a bus after just the second pill. I have had a severe head ache all day I cannot look at bright lights or even the TV, my right side of my body has gone all tight my chest is tight and it's difficult to breath plus many more side effects :( this feel more like a torture than a treatment"

"I have a infection on my tooth due to poor root treatment, I'm taking amoxicillin & Metronidazole at the same time, honestly both are not completely helping but I assume it takes some days to the remedy kicks in. I have no side effects as most of people described."

"I took these for 5 days for a dental abscess, I had a little heartburn but that goes with over the counter tablets. The metronidazole hasn’t made the slightest bit of difference to the abscess though"

"This is my 5th time this year on Metronidazole for an impacted wisdom tooth that can't be removed but keeps developing an abscess. It usually follows a failed course of amoxicillin and although it always clears up the infection the side effects are pretty awful. I feel like I've the flu for the first few days (fever, fatigue, unable to sleep, stomach cramps and loss of appetite) which usually means I have to miss work and then a really sickly stomach for the last three. It also takes me a few days after finishing the course for my energy levels and stomach to get back to normal. So drug works but the side effects are worse than my actual aliment."

"Into my second day and after only 3 x 400mg tablets I stopped the treatment. I had severe stomach cramps, diarrhoea, dark urine but worst of all severe back pain. I stayed in bed for most of the day even after I stopped the treatment. I will avoid in future."

"Was prescribed metronidazole for my gum abscess. Suffered from side effects ever since the first dose. I'm on 2 tablets 3 times a day. Stomach has been producing more gastric juice and there's burning sensation. It leaves a bitter taste on ur tongue for a while after you've swallowed the tablets. Worst of all, I've been feeling nauseous all day."

"I was prescribed metronidazole on Monday morning for a dental abscess, 400mg 3x daily. Yesterday (Tuesday) I slept in a deep sleep for most of the day and night, waking up for medication/ food/water and having spells of confusion and extreme fatigue, feeling angry and frustrated. This morning (Wednesday) woke up feeling exhausted and very irritated. Not understanding why, crying for no reason. This behaviour is completely out of the blue for me. Phoned the dentist surgery they were no use what so ever, said they are not the common side effects for this medication. Family members were worried so took me to Drs, they’ve prescribed me some different antibiotics. Safe to say will not be taking this again!!!!"

"I have suffered with teeth issues for years. When you’ve been in that much pain you’d take anything to never feel that pain again. I’ve had a few teeth removed and been prescribed this, I’ll take whatever comes to me. Some tablets won’t agree with you so be mindful but please try this if amoxicillin hasn’t worked. This works."

"I have an inflammation around my wisdom tooth which has spread to tonsillitis and I was prescribed Phenoxymethylpenicillin by my GP and Metronidazole 400 / three times a day by my dentist, who agreed I can take them together. Within a first pill of Metronidazole I started to have a massive headache, so I took paracetamol too. After the second pill I woke up sweating and dizzy with a terrible rash on my hands and painful red spots inside my fingers and under my nails. I can't use my thumbs properly as they are hurting me. However, I still continue taking this medication because I've been having such a terrible infection and it's spreading too quickly. I'm on my second day now but I feel improvements, although they are very slow. Hopefully everything will be ok."

"I have been on this antibiotic going on my 5th day I have 3 1/2 days left and my face is not excruciating although although it feels like I've been hit in the temple with a hammer, my neck hurts my urine is very dark or frequent and colorless. My back start bothering me yesterday but today I am really uncomfortable. The pain med are not working and I'm worried they are effecting my kidneys( Advil 800mg and a really strong prescribed pain med) after reading the above comments I'm thinking I would feel better without pain meds considering they could be making my body work hard to process all the medicine!"
