"I nearly didn’t take metronidazole after reading these comments. I’m so glad I decided to take it anyway, as it is curing my dry socket. I took advice from one review and am eating a lot of live yogurt (with ginger) and probiotics. I’m also making sure I eat before taking it. I find that I feel sick if I don’t eat regularly. I’m feeling very tired, but at the end of the day, I feel lucky to have access to antibiotics."

"I was prescribed these for an infected wisdom tooth after being on amoxicillin for a week before, which didn't really do much. First day on them, and the pain was a lot worse with night sweats and drowsiness. By the second day, I felt like a new person. Pain in tooth has gone - although I still have lockjaw, and the swelling around my face has gone. No other side effects. Take them after meals and with a pint of water."

"Started metronidazole yesterday for an infected wisdom tooth. Three 400 mg tablets per day. I haven't had any adverse reactions so far. The pain has been reducing. Not all meds react the same with people. Thankfully, this works for me. You don't know unless you try."

"I was prescribed the 400 mg version to be taken 3 times a day for 5 days to treat a dental abscess. The tablets did a great job at treating the abscess, but they did have side effects. I did research the tablets prior to taking them and heard they were not the nicest, so I was prepared for that. After a day of taking them, I felt quite drowsy for 2 days. Once the drowsiness subsided, I began to feel nauseous but did not vomit, and I developed a terrible taste in my mouth. If you do have to take them, I recommend taking them in between your food, as I found it helped with the nausea and also to avoid the immediate nasty aftertaste. Overall, I found them to be brilliant at treating the abscess, so would take them again."

"I have had a severe tooth abscess, which I fought on and off for a few years. Last time I had it, it gave me the most severe pain I have ever experienced in my life! Half of my face was swollen, I couldn't eat or sleep. I would stay up all night crying due to the extreme pain. I was prescribed amoxicillin and ibuprofen. Took them for more than a week, but they didn't seem to do much, and the swelling was getting worse. Then the dentist prescribed me metronidazole along with the antibiotics I was already taking, and it changed my life! The pain was completely gone within less than 24 hours, and the swelling went down within the first 3 days! I have personally not experienced any side effects and would take this medication again if needed."

Flagyl (metronidazole) "Was reluctant to take this, had read reviews, and was going on holiday. But weighed up either bad toothache or risk side effects. No effects whatsoever. Shifted my toothache. But didn't risk alcohol at all. Was a bit itchy, but nothing bad. Would take again if I had to."

"I was put on amoxicillin for an abscessed tooth, and it helped but did not completely clear the infection. I'm on Flagyl now, and I feel better than I have in years. Instead of sleeping ten hours a night, I am sleeping about six, and yet I have more energy than I have ever had. I feel so good right now that I would like to take this forever. My fibromyalgia is in remission, and the chronic fatigue is gone. This is awesome. I wonder if the really bad side effects for other patients are because they are allergic to it, or this antibiotic is just not the right one for the infection that they have (and are they staying away from fermented sugars/alcohol?)."

"A week ago, I had a wisdom tooth extracted. After the anesthetic had worn off, I was in agony. Obviously, after such trauma to my gum, the pain should be expected, right? For the next 5 days, I was crying in pain, every day, night, all through the day. I've had 5 strokes but recently broke my back in 2 places. I'm on some pretty heavy-duty painkillers. The pain was so bad in my gum that I did what I never thought I'd do and I took extra pain meds. Yesterday, I went back to the dentist. He poked my wound, gum, and jaw, then wrote up a script for metronidazole 200 mg to be taken 3 times a day, a 5-day course. He asked if I had liver problems, then told me if I was sick, I was to stop. I feel great, hardly any pain. This drug works wonders."

Flagyl (metronidazole) "Caught a bacterial infection from daughter visiting from Japan August 2016. Could not get well. Unknowingly had a dental abscess that made me even more ill. Did some research and found Flagyl with Augmentin had helped others. Got dental problems addressed and took 21 days of Flagyl 500 mg x 2 daily with Augmentin 875 mg x 2 daily. Got well. Had to have more invasive dental work and am currently taking a 21-day course of Flagyl 1000 mg x 2 daily with 875 mg Augmentin x 2 daily to head off infection recurring. If you have been ill and given up hope, try this combo. Yep, it's a lot of antibiotics but I was quite sick and it helped me. I was infection-free at the time of last dental work but taking this as a preventive course."

"Positive experience - I was prescribed a 5-day course of metronidazole 400 mg 3 x daily for a tooth abscess. I wanted to review after terrifying myself from reading all the negative reviews. Fortunately, this medication worked almost perfectly for me. On the first 2 doses, I didn't eat properly with it and did experience some nausea, but from day 2, I made sure I ate a full meal with it and took the medication halfway through eating with a large glass of water. No further side effects for me. Cleared up my tooth abscess and I felt fine on it. I didn't drink alcohol at all in the days leading up to taking it and for about a week after. My dentist warned me that drinking alcohol with it would cause a severe reaction, so definitely avoid that."

"On Metronidazole for the 4th time due to a wisdom tooth which keeps becoming infected (they cannot take it out as it is sitting on a nerve and may leave me with permanent facial numbness). Overall, this drug is amazing, and I always find that the infection disappears within 3-4 days of taking it. However, I have a very weak stomach, and therefore it hits me hard and leaves me fairly nauseous most of the time. As well as this, I tend to feel 'spaced out' and not quite myself. On the whole though, the pros outweigh the cons, and the side effects are well worth the results! ***Note: I've been told to take ibuprofen and paracetamol whilst on Metronidazole this time to take away pain/swelling, etc., and I found this amplifies feelings of nausea x1000.***"

"it seems to be helping the infection but the side effects are hard to deal with. Not used to being nauseous or having any kind of side effects at all. But I have found out that smoking marijuana helps with the nausea and the dizziness. Highly recommend the drug if you have an infection. But also highly recommend having a bag of herb for the nausea. I would highly recommend smoking before you take your daily dose. It that stops the nausea before it ever happens."

"Taking 400 mg of this x 3 per day plus penicillin due to an infected wisdom tooth. It's definitely clearing up the infection, but I've been feeling sick, had weird dreams, the sweats, and lethargy. Pretty heavy duty, but no more toothache, so I guess it's worth it."

"Prescribed metronidazole 200 mg three times a day for 5 days alongside amoxicillin 250 mg, same dose. After 24 hours, the horrific pain in my tooth has gone, and aside from a dizzy spell yesterday, I have not noticed any side effects. Also taking ibuprofen for the pain but have cut back on that now that it's gone. So glad to be feeling normal again! Have not drunk any alcohol as advised by the dentist."

Flagyl (metronidazole) "For a few years, I have had this horrid smell coming from under my crown. I have had dental care from my dentist, but the smell would persist. My dentist said he didn't notice an abscess, but I told him that fluid was leaking from under the crown as well. I tried amoxicillin for 14 days (two separate runs), and it calmed the smell down some, but once I stopped the med, the smell came back full force. I am about to finish Flagyl, and I don't notice the smell at all. This is great, tastes like crap, but it works."

"After a filling, I ended up with an infection, worst agony I've ever felt (and I've given birth). The only thing that relieved it was a hot water bottle (I'm aware you should not do that, but I was in so much pain). Allergic to penicillin, so was prescribed this. Slept for a week! I slept so much I had to move in with my parents so they could take care of my son. From day one, I couldn't get out of bed. I also dropped 7 lbs because I wasn't hungry at all. Felt high, acted high, missing memories from the week, very odd dreams. Bloating. Gas. Day 3, swelling and pain way down, day 5, gone. Also, 2 weeks later - 9 days late on cycle and altered bowels drastically!"

"I have a tooth infection, and I'm on my fourth day of taking metronidazole. I am prescribed 400 mg three times a day. I'm still in agony. I have to take paracetamol and ibuprofen just to ease the pain. I've had severe headaches and really bad muscular pain. I will finish the five-day course but will not be taking this again for dental purposes again."

"Worked wonders for my dental abscess. Midway through my A-levels, a wisdom tooth in my lower left side of mouth decided to come through, causing severe pain and subsequent pericoronitis. Dentist prescribed me three 400mg pills for a total of 5 days. He warned me of side effects that could negatively affect my performance in exams. The metronidazole was extremely effective in reducing the pain - paracetamol simply wasn't effective enough. It also reduced my massively swollen cheek within 2 days - the metronidazole rapidly cured my abscess and I feel no pain anymore. I did experience some side effects - my chest felt tight, I felt slightly dizzy and uncoordinated most of the time, it was harder to think deeply, and I had a reduced appetite. I was anticipating the worst after I read all these negative reviews, but in my personal experience, the drug was extremely effective, and I would recommend it to anyone."

Flagyl (metronidazole) "I had teeth abscess and my whole face swelled, it was scary. I was prescribed augmentin with flagyl and serodase for a week. I woke up the next day the swelling increased. Then within two days pain decreased, swelling decreased and by the fifth day everything was gone"

"Prescribed with amoxicillin, I have sore joints, am weaker than normal, have the most intense and beefy (flows like liquid but there's more oomph to it than normal) diarrhea, but the swelling in my jaw is dwindling rapidly after day 3 of a 7-day course. It's worth the side effects for me, especially since the diarrhea is almost enjoyable because of the sheer novelty of it."

"I have been prescribed metronidazole as I have an infected lower wisdom tooth, I was struggling to open my mouth, had severe headaches, earache and generally feeling unwell, this was all before I was prescribed and took Metronidazole so I'm guessing it's mainly symptoms of the infection, rather than the drug itself. I am having to take amoxacillin alongside though because my infection is that bad. Felt sleepy and poorly but that's just because I have a big infection my body is trying to fight off rather than the antibiotics"

"I had a bad reaction to this drug and I have never had problems with antibiotics in the past. I had to take 5 days but got to 4. I took it in good faith never having problems before. The side affects hit me out of left field I felt like I was being poisoned. I had high anxiety emotional crying (I never cry) nausea, sleeplessness, shaking one minute, too hot the next, and felt like I was sinking into a black hole of despair. Thank god for the Internet and research and others on various websites having the same side effects. I am on day three of stopping and I am about 70% getting back to normal. This antibiotic needs to be taken off the shelf, it's scary."

"I am on the 3rd day of medication after having a severe tooth abscess. Infection and pain subsided to almost nil. Only side effect is drowsiness and slight depression, but I can live with this as opposed to the horrendous pain of the abscess. 4 days to go for a tooth extraction as it is wobbly and loose."

"Had a sinus infection which caused pain in the middle of my upper jaw, which then travelled down to my lower jaw. The pain affected my teeth which were otherwise in reasonable health. Took metronidazole and the pain subsided within hours. Relative had an actual tooth infection and was also prescribed same drug - same result; it worked wonders in a short space of time, less than one day. We both finished course as advised. Note: do NOT consume alcohol during and after course and wait at least 48 hours after you've finished your course. You may also feel a little out of it - this is normal, and will subside. By out of it I mean you'll see and hear things but they will take time to fully register. Take drug with plenty of water and after a meal. Hope this helps."
