For Hypothyroidism, After Thyroid Removal "I had my thyroid removed about 2 years ago. I weighed about 190. I was put on 125 mcg Synthroid right after the surgery. I lost about 20 pounds without trying at all. My dosage was increased to 175 mcg. I then started gaining weight. My endocrinologist increased my dosage to 200 mcg. My weight went up to 224 lbs. Never weighed so much before. I've been told by a couple of other doctors that the higher doses of Synthroid should cause weight loss, not gain. I am 72 years old. In general, I have aches and pains, something wrong every day. Don't know if that's Synthroid related or not. But I am very uncomfortable with all this weight, just doing everyday things."

For Hashimoto's disease "6+ years on Synthroid, and this is what I have to show for it. Used to be a size 12, now a 28, no periods, pain all over, hypo symptoms still, mental and mood symptoms (anxiety, depression, mood swings). My growth hormone is only 40 and my FSH is 78. I can't have children. Finally switched to Cytomel, it broke me out and still had the same symptoms as above. My level was over 20 last they checked. Just got a prescription for Armour, hoping I finally get my life back."

For Hypothyroidism, After Thyroid Removal "Lately, I have been experiencing flu-like body pains. Feeling achy, weak legs and arms. This medicine is ruining my life. Every time I increase the dosage, even by small amounts, I feel so nervous and withdrawn."

For Underactive Thyroid "Had partial thyroid removal with benign tumor 30+ years ago, was OK until about 2 years ago and routine bloodwork showed low thyroid. After 2 years being OK on the medication, suddenly the thyroid levels are dropping again, hair falling out, skin is breaking out in itchy red welts, gaining weight, so Dr. upped the dosage. A couple of weeks on a higher dose I feel like I am 'wired' in high gear, can't sit still, talking to myself going in circles, and my hot flashes have really, really ramped up big time. Dr. says to give it at least 60, preferably 90 days to adjust, not sure I can hold out that long before stopping it. Hoping there is a better solution out there someplace."

For Hashimoto's disease "Synthroid has changed my life - from 16 hours/day in bed to being an active medical school student. The only side effect I have experienced is dry eye in the mornings, but that is fine with the use of artificial tears. I used Synthroid for my Hashimoto's and now continue to use it post-thyroidectomy. I only use the Synthroid name brand because generics could be made at different labs and will not be exactly the same every month. Talk to your doctor about using generics. My doctors only prescribe the name brand for me because it is important to have constant thyroid hormone levels."

For Underactive Thyroid "I used Synthroid (25, 50, or 75) for over more than 10 years, but had to use the original, not the generic, because the generic does not work in some people. I've not been operated on, but for over 2 years, I've been using NatureThroid (32.5) instead, which was recommended by my ND, and I have to say that all my side effects that Synthroid caused had gone. I almost lost all my hair and had terrible heartbeats, headaches, joint pains, etc. I do not have Hashimoto, and really don't know if it works for people with this condition, but I tried NatureThroid, and I am very happy with the results."

For Hypothyroidism, After Thyroid Removal "I have been on Synthroid for 15 years now. Two years ago, my insurance company would not cover Synthroid anymore, so they sent me the generic. I broke out in a rash and felt awful. My doctor wrote for Synthroid only. I am paying $288.00 a year now out of pocket instead of $16.00. I am not sure what happened, but my belly has been bloated ever since, and I have gained 40 pounds! My new doctor of internal medicine does not seem to care and says it's my age, blah, blah, blah. I told her I wanted to be tested for Hashimoto, and she said there was no doubt in her mind that I have it. My thyroid is totally not working, and I am taking 125 mcg a day. I am not sure what else I can do, as she does not seem to want to help. Me gaining 40 pounds is not acceptable."

For Hashimoto's disease "Was diagnosed with Hashimoto's about 2 months ago. I would wake up feeling very fatigued, and I would have to take a power nap at work before I could drive home. I had seen the endocrinologist, and he put me on 50 mg of Synthroid once a day. After about two weeks, I felt great, I was back to my normal self minus the weight I gained (10 lbs in 2 weeks). Now, all of a sudden, I woke up this past Monday with a migraine and no appetite. Today is Friday, still battling the migraine and have lost 7 lbs. Every time I think of food, I want to vomit. Had labs done, and everything came back normal. Body feels very hot, and a lot of sweating. Doc lowered me to 25 mg on Wednesday, but still no changes in headache or appetite."

For Hashimoto's disease "I have been on Synthroid now for 4 years. I wasn't able to take the generic Levothyroxine because it caused me high blood pressure. I was shocked to find out I had thyroid disease. My dosage continues to go up, I'm on 125 mcg now, and just had my TSH checked, and it's again on the low end (which I can tell because of fatigue, weight gain, hair loss). I demand my thyroid to be tested every 4 months. When it's in the middle of the 'normal' range is the only time I feel good!"

For Hashimoto's disease "Suffering for years from all symptoms of hypothyroidism, and my mother has Hashimoto's. Finally, the doctor did thyroid tests. My thyroid peroxidase ASB level was 170, but Free T4 and T3 were within the normal range. The doctor prescribed 100 mg Synthroid to start. Wow! In three days, I could tell a difference. I rated Synthroid 8 out of 10. Time will tell if I have side effects, but for the time being, after one week on Synthroid, I feel like a new person."

For Hypothyroidism, After Thyroid Removal "I am a 38-year-old female. I had my thyroid removed about 7 months ago because I had thyroid cancer. I have been on Synthroid for about five months. My endocrinologist has a great deal of experience, so we found my correct dose after only two tries. Once I was at my correct replacement dose, I felt great. I feel just as well, if not better, than I did before I was diagnosed. I am counting off a point only because Synthroid (though this is the case with all brands of levothyroxine) is a nuisance to take every day, and it requires some planning if one must (as I do) take calcium and iron supplements every day as well."

For Hashimoto's disease "I was on this medicine for about 6 months, and in that time, I felt worse than when I wasn't taking it. It took the migraines away, but I still had muscle aches, fatigue, hair loss, dry skin, brittle nails, and more. The huge symptom I had on this medicine that bothered me was the depression. I felt dread and doom every day. I couldn't take it anymore, so I stopped taking it, then I went to a different doctor who prescribed me Armour."

For Hypothyroidism, After Thyroid Removal "My thyroid was removed in September 1993 due to papillary carcinoma. After removal and treatment, I was put on generic Synthroid and could not get my levels regulated. After a time, I was put on brand name Synthroid and leveled out. I am unable to take the generic."

For Hashimoto's disease "I've taken name brand Synthroid for 30 years now. At first, when I was on the lower dosages, the 25 and 50 mcg, it seemed to work fine. Then suddenly, my TSH went up and I was referred to a new endocrine doctor, and we raised my dosage to 75 mcg. This caused palpitations and severe anxiety, so we went down to 62.5 mcg (125 mcg cut in half). I've been on 62.5 for a while now, and I'm frustrated. After my dosage kept going up, I've gained 10 lbs over a few weeks. I've also developed a constantly bloated abdomen and face, heartburn, constant hunger which I manage by staying on 1200 calories a day and no snacking. I also work out daily. I've been tested for H. Pylori, SIBO, celiac, food intolerances, etc. and no answers. I think this medication causes all of these issues at higher dosages. My current TSH is 1.4, but I am going to see if I can try something else or try alternating with a lower dosage. I'm tired of waking up to my clothes not fitting and constantly looking pregnant."

For Underactive Thyroid "I've been taking Synthroid for a few years and it has really helped. My dose has gone up several times. I can really tell a change in how I feel now compared to before I was taking it. I tried the generic and it actually made me feel worse, so I am taking the name brand only."

For Hypothyroidism, After Thyroid Removal "I had my thyroid removed in February 2009 and was on Levothroid until about 2 months ago. It did nothing to help. I switched to Synthroid, and it seems to work better, but I still am feeling depressed, have difficulty concentrating, and have trouble remembering things, like any new information given to me. I just haven't felt like myself since the surgery."

For Underactive Thyroid "After seeing my OB for some problems with menstruation, I was sent for about 10 different blood tests to check my hormone levels. Let's just say that we found the source of my problem and I was referred to an endocrinologist. She wanted to repeat my TSH level because she said that being at 3.65 was a little high for someone my age. So I went back within 4 weeks to get retested and my TSH was 10.36, and I was feeling it. I was so tired I could barely get out of bed. My headaches were out of control, and I gained about 10 lbs in a month's time. I just started 75 mg Synthroid a few days ago, so I'm feeling optimistic. I feel once we get my pituitary adenoma, thyroid, and my vitamin D under control, I'll be so much better. ADVICE: listen to your body."

For Underactive Thyroid "I was put on Synthroid 1 year after telling my endocrinologist (he was taking care of my type 1 diabetes) that I think I have low thyroid (it runs in my family). After a year, he finally tested my TSH, which was high, and put me on Synthroid. My TSH came back fine, but I told him my hair was still thinning, my nails were still brittle, my stomach was still swollen, and I got every bug that was within 100 miles. I also developed total exhaustion and only left the house for doctor appointments. I went from 103 lbs. to 130 lbs. He put me on a higher dose and switched me to Levothyroxine (generic for Synthroid), which caused a rash and itching on my face, then on the rest of my body, it felt like a ball in my throat. Changing doctors now."

For Hypothyroidism, After Thyroid Removal "I had my thyroid removed in December 2013 and have not felt like me since it was removed. I have been on Synthroid 100 mcg and am having back and knee pain, terrible chest discomfort, tiredness, fatigue, and shortness of breath, which prevents me from doing daily chores as I would like. Doctors keep saying it has nothing to do with the med, but I beg to differ. Cardiac workup fine; at times cholesterol goes up, glucose and blood pressure go up, and the list goes on. When will the doctors listen to patients and not try to tell them how they feel (because they are not the ones suffering)? Pray that I can find a doctor who has thyroid problems. These drug companies are thinking of their bank accounts and not that of the people who have to take their drugs."

For Underactive Thyroid "Thyroidectomy after cancer diagnosis, and so far I've had not had great luck with Synthroid. Currently, I'm on 112 mcg, and it makes me feel like I have an itchy sunburn. The weight gain is insane, I feel waterlogged in my legs most of the time and have too many mental glitches. I dislike this drug, it has too many fillers that cause other issues. If you have known allergies, avoid Synthroid until they can create an allergy-free version."

For Underactive Thyroid "I was born with a thyroid condition. I am a 23-year-old female. I did the other brand for a while, and it made me tired, sad, and just made me feel hopeless. I am on Synthroid 88 mcg, and although I sometimes feel sad, my weight is maintained, I'm able to work, and play with my 1-year-old daughter, who, thank God, is healthy. Finding the right dosage is so important and is trial and error. If everything is good and you only have one symptom like sadness... get a hobby, again a close friend is so important and always take your pill!"

For Hashimoto's disease "My Hashimoto's with a benign nodule was found after losing my twins to early delivery. Endo believes this was a missed factor in my loss. My TSH was over 4. Started on levothyroxine 100 mcg was great for 2 months, but by the third month, my blood sugars dropped, heart was racing (palpitations), body itching like the burn you feel after a workout, my hair was falling out, severe anxiety, and I was losing 2 lbs every few days (that part I didn't mind). I was insistent to check my TSH and it was 0.27, adjusted down to 88 mcg with an extra half tab once a week. My TSH is now 2.2, but I feel the depression and fatigue. Adjusting back up to 100 since it's been 3 years. At least now I know what to watch for. I no longer experience PCOS or DM 2."

For Underactive Thyroid "After the birth of my twins 32 years ago, I was diagnosed with postpartum hypothyroidism. Started on 88 mcg, and with monthly labs, I found myself within a year at 200 mcg. My grandmother had lupus, and looking back, I think I had some sort of an autoimmune disorder since childhood. Two of my children also have autoimmune disorders, one with Hashimoto's and the other with psoriatic rheumatoid arthritis, and they both have PCOS and the anxiety disorders that go along with this lovely disease. Originally, I was given levothyroxine, but my levels were just not normal, so I was given Synthroid, and it had to be dispensed as written by the pharmacy. I still have symptoms that sometimes feel debilitating. I really feel that Synthroid has obviously helped me, but 32 years on this and still symptomatic and deficient in vitamins, I think it's time that an endocrinologist would allow me to become one of their patients! Autoimmune disorders are no fun!"

For Hashimoto's disease "I was on this medication for about two weeks or so, and within the first couple of days, it made me feel extremely anxious and depressed. I felt as if I was not in control of my emotions. As if this was not bad enough, I also felt an uncomfortable sensation in my neck and experienced trouble sleeping."
