"My doctor inserted the Mirena after a D&C, so I was under anesthesia (no pain). I am 51 years old and I've had a horrible and very symptomatic perimenopause for 4 long years now. The worst being debilitating heavy bleeding that would cause me to lose a couple of days of work each month. The bad being an everyday feeling of uncomfortable bloating, unpredictable mood swings, insomnia, and hot flashes that came almost once an hour. I tried countless natural remedies from diet/exercise to so many products/supplements. NOTHING worked so I sought out another doctor. My new OB doc did some testing first, I'm healthy! My estrogen levels were on the higher end and my uterine walls were measuring thick, but she had a plan of action instead of me continuing to feel awful every day. The Mirena has been amazing for me! No periods, I can't feel it, and my anxiety/mood swings are replaced feeling much more calm and balanced. I feel great, no side effects, got my life back!"

"I am 53 and a half, and last November 2022, I finally got the Mirena. My non-stop heavy bleeding was due to the hormones in perimenopause. I am so happy I got it, and finally, after 4 months, the bleeding settled down. I still have other symptoms, but having the debilitating bleeding under control has given me some control. I really thought it was going to get better around 52, but no, I'm one of the late menopausal. Do not suffer, get the Mirena!"

"Okay, this is a Mirena review. But it is also a four-part review of Estarylla/Sprintec, NuvaRing, Paragard, Nexplanon, and Mirena. I am a person who has been on some form of birth control for almost 20 years. I have had VERY heavy periods to the point that they interfered with my daily life. Estarylla/Sprintec - Spotting, water weight, pH issues. (18 years.) NuvaRing - Constant BV. (Approx. 1 year.) Paragard - Worst cramps EVER, even heavier flow. (Approx. 6 months.) Nexplanon - Immediate horrible acne and oily skin. (Approx. 6 months.) I have had Mirena for two months. This is my second period. The first one was already less, and this one is lighter than my light days on a 'normal' period for me. Cramps are almost non-existent. I lost ten pounds. It did not give me acne. All pH issues are gone. It did not affect my sex drive at all. I have had pretty regular light spotting, which is normal initially. I will update if anything changes."

"I have had horrible heavy bleeding for the past 10 years since my second child was born. It was awful! It wasn't just bleeding. Every month, I would spend at least 1 full day completely nonfunctional. All I could do was lay there and bleed. There were days at work when everyone thought I was mad or really upset, but in reality, I just didn't even have the energy to speak. I had thought about the Mirena for years because I have friends who use it for birth control and don't get their periods, but I was so afraid of side effects! I've now had it for 6 months, and my periods are so much better! I still get them, and they still last a long time, but I'm using nothing more than light or regular tampons, which feels like a breeze compared to before. Cramping has improved significantly, and my PMS fatigue is not as bad. Emotional PMS symptoms are about the same with some added breast tenderness. I'm still fully aware of my cycle, but the reduction in bleeding, cramping, and fatigue are life-changing."

"Phenomenal. My fibroid bleeding has been getting progressively worse over the years, to the point of nearly requiring transfusions for anemia. I'd been taking tranexamic acid, but the next step was a hysterectomy. I desperately wanted to avoid surgery, so my GYN suggested Mirena. The first 3 months with Mirena were awful while my body acclimated, but now that I am at month 6, my cycles are a breeze. I no longer need the tranexamic acid or the super plus/optum supplies. I wish I'd known about Mirena years ago. Just remember, you've got to get through the acclimation phase before the magic begins!"

"I've read quite a few negative reviews of the Mirena coil, but I just wanted to share mine as it's a positive one! I have had the Mirena coil for 3 months now. I had some uterine polyps removed, and at the same time, the doctor put in the Mirena coil as he said it would help with my really heavy periods while thinning the uterine lining and hopefully stopping the abnormal bleeding between periods I had had for years, which was extremely annoying! Well, I'm on my 3rd month, and I am really happy with the results! My periods have been so light. I can't remember the last time I haven't needed to change a pad or tampon more than once in an hour. Now I barely need to use any sanitary products, it's great! So far, I am really pleased with the coil, and I wish I had gotten it sooner! I am 38 and have two children. The added benefit of contraception is also great!"

"I had the Mirena inserted in April 2024 and I've had non-stop bleeding since. It's spotting, light, and heavy at times. It's starting to become annoying. My OBGYN keeps advising me to give it 3-6 months for my body to adjust, but I'm strongly considering getting it removed and going for the uterus ablation. I have friends and family that have the Mirena and have not had any issues. So with that being said, this is my experience, and it may not be the same for everyone."

"When I first had Mirena, I got it under general anesthesia, and I spotted for the first 3 days. Then it was okay, but I had a 3-week period 13 days later. After that, I had spotting on and off and no period for the past 4 weeks. I have non-atypical endometrial hyperplasia, so I'm not sure if I'm not bleeding because of that or if I'm going through menopause. I'm 49 years old. I also have 3 fibroids. Otherwise, I'm great."

"GIVE IT TIME. Everyone is different. Best thing I did! Maybe this will help someone. Prior to the coil, I suffered terrible PMS, heavy periods, felt like I was dying, felt suicidal, panic attacks increased tenfold, it was unbearable (I do think I have endometriosis, but I haven't been tested). I got the coil, but I’m under general anaesthetic as I have a tilted cervix and could not bear a third attempt of the pain I experienced when they tried to fit it. When I came around, I had terrible cramps and was bleeding. I bled and suffered cramps for ten months straight, had bad skin, and sore enlarged breasts. I had numerous checks to ensure all was well-it was. I had always heard that within three to four months, it will settle. I am here to say that isn’t the case with everyone, so if you don’t settle within four months, give it time before you remove it. You may be like me. After ten months of hell, nothing except a light spotting of brown-tinged discharge when I wipe."

"I think I have had enough, yeah, yeah. "You might have spotting". I have had this period for a minimum of 2-3 weeks, before I had my period only about 5 days previous to that. Will this ever end? And it's not enough to call it a heavy period, more like a trickle, but it doesn't smell great, and every time I think it's over, it starts again. Please, someone tell me that this is just a teething issue!"

"I was terrified to get the IUD after reading so many horror stories. I finally did it, and the pain was nothing I couldn't handle and only lasted a few seconds. I went from having awful heavy periods. I was on daily iron pills to barely getting a period, and never needing more than a panty liner. I have had zero side effects. People are quick to blame everything on their IUD. I'm so happy I did it!"
