For Dietary Supplementation "I've been using 200 mg of l-theanine combined with caffeine on and off for about 4 months now. At first, it was okay, but I would have this weird dizziness that would fade away after some time. I loved the way it kind of made me 'wake up' for hours so I could work and study with full focus. However, this month and last month have been horrible for me with regards to taking these pills. I've started to feel tingly and numb in the hands and feet, and I have this awful dizziness accompanied by horrible heartburn. I feel like I am living in another dimension right now as everything around me is spinning. I took the pills last night for me to finally realize that this isn't for me. I did not sleep all night long! I still feel restless 10 hours later, and the numbness, dizziness, and heartburn are still there. I am a perfectly healthy woman, and trust me, this supplement isn't for everyone, so be careful."

For Dietary Supplementation "This really does help you be calm and focus, however, it gives me severe insomnia. Even if I take it in the morning, I can't fall asleep that night. It's like my brain is completely wired on it, and what little sleep I got was very restless. If you have insomnia, I would recommend testing this out on a day where you don't need to be up for anything the next morning."

For Dietary Supplementation "Took 100 mg of L-theanine with a 20 oz coffee. Felt energetic and very focused all day long, just like it said I would. Went to sleep and remember having bad nightmares. Woke up at 4 AM with the worst gas and diarrhea I ever had (to the point I thought about going to the ER). I do believe they are onto something with this drug, but the way it randomly affects each person completely differently tells me that more research is needed. It is asinine to be sold over the counter."

For Dietary Supplementation "I was considering talking to my doctor about my anxiety, then a friend suggested Stress Formula by Sundown. I can't believe how well this works. For the money and not worrying about harmful side effects, this is the way to go for me!"

For Dietary Supplementation "Been taking it for a week and have had very vivid dreams, clenched fists, crying, nightmares every single night. Thought it may have been coincidence, but I think not since that's the only thing I did differently. I think I will just go back to taking my 10 mg of melatonin."

For Dietary Supplementation "48-year-old male. Took it for general anxiety disorder, tried every med out there, almost everyone, some worked for a couple of years then stopped working so I go to another, on these meds for 19 years, very medication sensitive, got off all meds a year ago, still had a little anxiety so took l-theanine for about a week, worked really well for 7 days then suddenly developed a massive headache with extreme neck pain and dizziness. I stopped taking l-theanine 250 mgs. It's been 2 days since I stopped and the headache and neck pain are almost gone. Definitely not for me, allergic to pain lol!"

For Dietary Supplementation "I've been having panic attacks. I researched and saw this was highly recommended. I took 100 mg in the morning. That's it. I only took one. It made me feel calm, then way too hyped up, and my heart started beating very fast. I got all jittery. I panicked because of the fast heartbeats! I thought I was having a heart attack. Never again."

For Dietary Supplementation "I have had panic attacks for a few years now. I am on Effexor (75 mg) and Klonopin (very little). Since my doctor wants me off the Klonopin and my anxiety has seemed to get worse, I decided to find other alternatives. I looked to magnesium, which really seems to help. I noticed L-theanine, and like most of you, I took it and felt the anxiety. I was like, what? Isn't it supposed to relax me? Well, I felt just the opposite. It subsided on its own, and I wasn't sure it was the pill, so I took it again at bedtime, and yep, the same. So I won't be taking any more."

For Dietary Supplementation "I tried this when my doctor recommended it for my chronic insomnia, 100 mg. I find it has the opposite effect. While it relaxes you, it makes your mind very aware and focused, too much so to sleep. I woke many times in the night, and after a few nights, I just didn't sleep. While I did not have rapid heartbeats like many have reported on here, I did have substantially elevated blood pressure about 5 or 6 hours after taking the pill (every time). I'm wondering how many of those reporting pounding heartbeat also had high BP but didn't have a BP reader? I know generally doctors don't love you taking amino acids individually because you're not getting a natural product in a small proportional dose. L-theanine is not something I'd take again. Anything that affects your brain chemistry, you need to be cautious with."

For Dietary Supplementation "I struggle with Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and I hate the way medicines make me feel! I saw some stuff about l-theanine and was excited to try something holistic with so many great reviews. At first, it was great; I noticed a calming effect within 30 minutes, I felt focused and alert, and overall in a good mood. I started taking 2 100 mg pills a day. After 2-3 weeks, I started noticing some changes. I felt like I just couldn’t focus at all, was in a weird depressed mood, wanted to sleep all the time, had no motivation to go workout. And if I didn’t take it at all, I felt HORRIBLE: dizzy, anxious, bad headaches. I stopped taking it about 3 days ago, and I’m trying to adjust. It just didn’t agree with me; maybe I should have just been taking it a few times a week rather than every day, but I think for now I’ll just steer clear."

For Dietary Supplementation "At first, I noticed that my anxiety was decreasing while taking this, but as I continued to take it, I got extremely depressed and felt weird (my anxiety came back). My emotions were very scattered, and I don’t know if it was because of this supplement because I heard there’s not supposed to be any side effects. Regardless, I think I’m going to stop taking it."

For Dietary Supplementation "This raised my amylase and lipase levels to such a high level that my Dr. ordered a CAT scan. Luckily for me, the CAT scan came back fine. I stopped taking the supplement, they redid my blood work two more times after discontinuing this supplement, and my levels started to return to normal, kind of. This scared the crap out of me, that an over-the-counter, supposedly safe medication would do something like that to your pancreas."

For Dietary Supplementation "Tried l-theanine for my chronic insomnia. Just one pill taken a few hours before bed made me have crazy vivid dreams almost as soon as I fell asleep, and I was awake again after only an hour but could not get back to sleep. I already have exhausting dreams when I do sleep, but this supplement seems to massively increase them even on the small dose I took. It may work for some to keep them asleep, but it's not for me. I didn't realize it increased dreaming until I researched it the next day. Seems half of other people have the same reaction."

For Dietary Supplementation "I took this supplement this morning on the way to work. By the time I got to work, I felt a little tired and dizzy. Within an hour, I became so nauseous and dizzy, and my head felt tight, and my neck got stiff, and my arms started to feel weak, and I got a little confused when trying to talk. I had to leave and go home. I still feel all of those things. I will not be taking this supplement again."

"I use L-theanine to help with my anxiety and OCD. I take 400 mg - 600 mg 1 - 2 times a day as needed. It has helped to calm and relax in intense situations. An evening dose has helped calm the anxiety keeping me awake at night. It also takes the edge off of caffeine and helps calm nerves for public speaking."

For Dietary Supplementation "I have taken l-theanine for several months after WLS. I suffer from anxiety, and it has helped me a lot. I drink it with coffee, and it gets me through the day. I take 100-200 mg a day. Today I took 300 mg. I completed all of my college assignments, which I sometimes procrastinate on... I feel relaxed and motivated. I think it works for some of us, but not for all. I love it!"

For Dietary Supplementation "I've lived with anxiety my whole life, and in my 50s now, post-menopausal, trying to reduce my tension and mood swings. Pharma made me too sleepy and had side effects, so I gave up on those in my late 30s. L-theanine was recommended by a pharmacist, and I've taken 100-200 mg a day in the morning, and it has worked wonders with my anxiety. It allows me to be calm enough to make cognitive changes and choices before I overreact. It has also helped with my foggy thinking, allowing me to focus. I noticed it in my dog's 'calming chews,' interestingly enough. I have also started giving it to an anxious teenager, and it helps with focus. Taken only in the morning, it may avoid the sleep issues that some have, but I've found that another 100 mg might be needed in the afternoon. I've had no sleep problems with it, but that could be because I usually only take it in the morning."

For Dietary Supplementation "Took one 200 mg pill with dinner, after an hour, felt relaxed, my neck felt relaxed, tightness gone. However, I had the worst night sleep, woke up several times, and finally at 2:30 a.m., gave up and got out of bed. I definitely had a strange reaction to it. Won't be taking it again."

For Dietary Supplementation "I took l-theanine at a 200 mg dose at 2 am in combination with 100 mg caffeine. I was hospitalized hours later. After the extreme weakness and dangerously low blood pressure it caused, panic attacks almost drove me crazy. It doesn't seem to work well for everyone."

For Dietary Supplementation "Well, I tried l-theanine because I was taking ashwagandha, but I was still getting a little anxiety. The first day I started, I felt tingly and a little weak, but I thought maybe because it’s the first time, so I kept on taking it. By the third time, I started feeling a little sad for no reason, and then the fourth day I didn’t feel like that, but then the fifth day I felt negative again, and I wasn’t feeling like this with ashwagandha at all. So yeah, it’s not for everybody, so be careful."

For Dietary Supplementation "Last night before I crawled into bed, I took two L-Theanine. Within 15 minutes, I felt a massive wave of relaxation and fatigue sweep over me. I honored my feelings despite it being relatively early in the evening and turned out the lights at 8:30. Within an hour of falling asleep, I experienced a horrifying dream. I rarely dream, so this was something rather unusual for me. Following my dream, I awoke an hour or so later with my heart pounding. Thank goodness I was able to successfully fall back to sleep. I have yet to try this supplement during the day, which I've read can help manage feelings of stress and anxiety in the workplace and at home. I was really impressed with how quickly this product promoted a sense of peaceful relaxation. I think L-Theanine may become a product I can depend on that will help calm my mind and settle my emotions as I prepare for a sound, restful night's sleep."

For Dietary Supplementation "Works well to increase both light and deep sleep. I noticed that within 6 hours, I had 2 hours of deep sleep, which is very good. If taking in the morning, it works well with caffeine to avoid feeling sleepy. Also, to aid sleep at night, taking it with magnesium works. Anyone who gets a tummy problem, try taking it with digestive enzymes. Anyone taking this who feels specific pain areas might want to get their liver, gallbladder, or pancreas checked because it isn't normal."

For Dietary Supplementation "My holistic friend recommended this supplement to me after the passing of my mom. I could not rest, and my emotions were off the charts! But after using this for a couple of days along with 5 HTP, I have been calmer and more in control of my emotions, without feeling all drugged up or walking around in a daze. I will continue to take both supplements to help manage my depression. I highly recommend both supplements."

For Dietary Supplementation "Let’s be clear here: supplements like this have clearly helped some folks. I just happened to fall on the other side of things, and it needs to be shared. As with others, I had a good first few days, and then days 4 and 5 were something entirely different, with heightened anxiety and depression deeper than I have felt before (worsened existing depression). I only took 200 mg in the morning and 200 mg at night. The moral of the story is to start low and start slow and write down what is happening. Talk to someone before taking this, because it can sincerely mess you up. I am a slow metabolizer, and that may play a role in my experience, just not sure."

For Dietary Supplementation "I've used the amino acid (not a drug) L-theanine off and on for many years. I have inattentive type ADHD and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Depending on the dose, and what I take it with (coffee, for example), it can make me feel simply a little bit calmer to being really sleepy, or in between. I have never had a problem with it, though for some reason, it makes me hungry."
