"I struggled with cough and congestion for two weeks, which turned into a sinus infection. I finally bit the bullet and bought Mucinex D. Within an hour of taking it, my symptoms were manageable. The sinus pressure and pressure in my ears were still there, but decreased, and my headache was almost gone. Every person will react differently to Pseudoephedrine. I'm fortunate enough to not be affected by the unpleasant side effects. I slept like a baby for the first time in weeks (10 hours after taking it at 5 pm). If you do not know how it will affect you, take it in the morning. The price was not much different than the Mucinex you can grab off the shelf: $13.00 for 18 tabs. Well worth it, in my opinion. I swear by this stuff and will definitely use it in the future, even though it’s a bit of a hassle to get your hands on. The pharmacy keeps it locked behind the counter, and you must ask for it and present your ID."

"I have an insanely bad cold, and my sinuses are so stopped up. I took this thinking it would bring me some relief. It sure did, along with anxiety and feeling like I was cracked out of my mind!!!! Now I’m sitting here at 12 AM reading everyone else’s reviews when I have to go back to work tomorrow after 2 days off...ugh. No one told me the pseudoephedrine would make me so wired!"

"Absolutely amazing! My partner and I have nasal congestion for weeks, but 10 minutes after taking one, we coughed and all of a sudden were clear! I feel like I haven't used the bottom half of my lungs in weeks. A little bit expensive."

"I am definitely feeling better as far as not being congested goes. However, I am writing this at 4:52 am because I have not been able to sleep all night long. I took the medicine at about 8 pm, so I probably won't be doing that again."

"I took Mucinex D last night because of slight congestion. It’s currently 4 a.m., and I have the PSAT in 4 hours. I’m wide awake, with my heart pounding and ears rushing. Thought it was the worst case of test-taking anxiety I’ve had, but alas, it was the Mucinex (the pseudoephedrine part). I do NOT recommend this for night use."

"Had congestion for 3 weeks. Doctor gave me antibiotics and suggested Mucinex D twice a day. The first two days seemed to help congestion somewhat, but I had no appetite and was somewhat anxious. The third night, I took it at 11 p.m. and slept about 2 hours. Woke up with my heart racing and anxiety. I couldn't sleep and was pacing. Effects started to wear off at 10 a.m. Wish I had seen this site first."

"Took first dose at 8:30 a.m. and went to work. Definitely cleared me up, so, as directed, took another dose at 12 hours (8:30 p.m.) and went to bed feeling tired. As the medication took effect, I became restless and tossed and turned and found myself unable to sleep. 1:30 a.m. and I'm learning of my mistake. Packaging should definitely be updated to disclose this fact. Works great to clear sinuses, but I won't take it again at night due to the side effect of insomnia."

"I had the worst experience with this Mucinex D Maximum Strength. I could not stop coughing and felt my blood boiling inside my body. This gave me anxiety and insomnia. Do not try it unless you want to feel like you're dying."

"My PCP suggested I take this to help with severe congestion. I took 3 doses of the 12 hours (max strength) at the prescribed intervals. Basically, one that afternoon, then one the next morning, and one that evening. That night, I could not sleep. I have never had problems sleeping and usually could find some way to read for a bit or do a relaxation exercise in the event it took longer than normal. I'm normally asleep by 10 or 11. It's now 4 am, I am not one bit sleepy, and I have to get up for work in 2 hours. Should be an interesting day."

"Have taken Mucinex D several times over the past few years with congestion. It is the best thing out there to make me feel better during the day, but I only take it in the morning with food. Even then, I usually don't sleep great at night but do not experience the insomnia others are talking about."

"I’ve been coughing for days (unable to sleep because of the cough), can’t breathe through my nose and have a congestion headache. Took 2 pills in the morning, and it took a while to kick in, but several hours later I realized I could actually take a full breath through my nose, the headache improved, still coughing but not quite as bad. I didn’t have any issues with feeling jittery or wide awake."

"This worked well for me. I had what felt like a pretty bad cold... headache, nasal and chest congestion, and a generally run-down feeling. Stayed in bed the first day, and on the second, I took the prescribed dose of Mucinex D - 2 tablets at 7:30 pm. I didn't experience the insomnia others spoke of, but maybe my perspective is different because I KNOW that if I hadn't taken it, I'd be up blowing my nose and coughing all night. Yes, I did wake up a few times more than usual, but I wasn't miserable when I did."

"I used Mucinex D last year, taking the recommended 1 pill every 12 hours, and was fine, it helped so much with my horrible sinus infection. I'm on day 3 of some nasty congestion and decided to take Mucinex D last night at 9 pm. DO NOT TAKE THIS IN THE AFTERNOON OR NIGHT IF YOU WANT TO SLEEP. I laid down at 10 pm because I felt like crap. I laid in bed until 2 am and finally fell asleep for a whole 3 hours. I do like this product, but I would just recommend taking it right away in the morning since it lasts 12 hours."

"I read all the information on the previous pages. The box of Mucinex D that I just purchased has a much higher mg of active ingredients than what was reviewed. Mine has 1200 mg guaifenesin and 120 mg pseudoephedrine HCl per pill. The information on the other page was regarding HALF those amounts. So be sure to take the correct dosages into account."

"Do not take this at all unless you want to be up and feeling like you are never, ever going to sleep again. I was taking DayQuil until my very smart girlfriend offered me a Mucinex in the middle of the night. Never, ever take this or any other med containing pseudoephedrine. Whatever you are going through is not worth the anxiety and insomnia. I also threw up as well, which tasted exactly like the Mucinex."

"I have experienced fluid in my ears for almost two years. Consulted with two ear and nose specialists and with an allergist. Tried three types of nose sprays and other natural options, like additional vitamin C, pollen defense, and the neti pot. Nothing worked until just recently. I developed a severe cold and took Mucinex D. To my amazement and happiness, the fluid drained from my ears. Clear ears! Problem - one cannot take Mucinex on a permanent basis."

"I took Mucinex, the capsule, as directions state, to help me with severe congestion the night before Thanksgiving. After reading the reviews, I must say it had the opposite effect on me, it made me tired. The best way for me to describe it was I felt like I took a muscle relaxer, but not as strong. It just made me feel slightly weak and needed to sleep. Although it definitely helped relieve my symptoms from being congested, such as my headache and cough. So for my sake, I would want to take it at night and definitely not have to drive anywhere. I am not one to take medication or any drugs for that matter."

"My doctor told me that the key to Mucinex working effectively is to take it with a full 8 oz of water and then keep drinking water throughout the day. The water is what helps thin it out. If I don't drink plenty of water with it, it doesn't work. When I do, it often works all day and night. I take it early in the day because it does keep me awake. I hope this helps, good luck, and I hope you feel better. * Use a humidifier too, the moisture in the air keeps you from drying out."

"It dehydrates you like crazy, and I could not drink enough liquids. My throat got so dry it caused me to cough uncontrollably. For the past 3 nights, I could not sleep... Even took 10 mg of Ambien, which usually knocks me out cold... But it didn't work. I just found this site and learned that my insomnia is caused by Mucinex D. Not worth the lack of sleep!"

"Took my first dose of Mucinex D at 10:30 a.m. yesterday, took a small nap around 12:30 for about half an hour, and have been awake since. It's now 8 a.m. the next day. Yes, I finally feel relief in my sinuses. I no longer look like a puffy-faced Darth Vader. It sounded like it's cleaning up a ton of congestion, but sleeping is not in my favor. Ugh, but I'm glad it's clearing things up for me. Just need some sleep."

"I had been struggling for several days with a severe head cold that was beginning to expand to my chest. I was using other over-the-counter medications with little effect. A co-worker mentioned Mucinex D, and I began to experience significant relief with the first dose. I did add an over-the-counter nighttime pain reliever, which really helped me to sleep through the night."

"After being diagnosed with bronchitis, I took the prescribed dose of 1200 mg at 11:30 am. It’s now 3:07 am the next day, and I am still not able to go to sleep! Thank God I did not take it every 12 hours as recommended, I would be going crazy like the other reviews! So nervous about if I will be falling asleep at work or still wide awake in a few hours. No rest in sight. I guess it is the pseudoephedrine in it that is keeping me awake."

"I have severe sinus problems all year long, but worse in the fall. The pressure pain is almost unbearable. My doctor has prescribed everything under the sun to help relieve the symptoms, and nothing works better than Mucinex D. I never have any drainage with my sinuses... just the pain/pressure, and I can get almost immediate relief after I take 1 bi-layer tablet (1200 mg guaifenesin and 120 mg pseudoephedrine). The medicine says it has an immediate release layer that works quickly, and it does. Then it has an extended release layer that works over the next few hours. I also have the side effect of insomnia, but it's so worth it to relieve that sinus pressure (those of you who have it know what I'm talking about!)."

"Took DM at bedtime and will never do that again! Yes, I felt better and felt some relief, however, the heart palpitations were out of this world! I was so jittery still 3 hours later that I literally couldn't sit still in my bed. Finally, I was able to sleep at 3 and woke up feeling super dehydrated and almost hungover, with puffy eyes and a bad headache. No más!"

"All I do is simply plan taking this in relation to my sleep routine. I take it in the morning, and then that way it has no effect on my sleep, and it gives me the entire day to expel whatever needs to come out."
