Anafranil (clomipramine) for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "Anafranil helped my OCD symptoms a little bit and helped me sleep at night. However, as my doctor increased my dosage, I started gaining weight, having horrible acne, and SEVERE constipation. It also made me crave junk food like some kind of addict. I was on Anafranil for about 10 months and gained 40 lbs. I haven't taken Anafranil in about 8 months. I've lost the 40 lbs. I didn't have to go on a diet or anything, as soon as I was off the drug my appetite went back to normal. However, 8 months later and my colon is still not healthy. I still have major issues with constipation and bloating. My doctor had me try Zyliss, a drug for IBS, and it helps a little. I feel like Anafranil may have ruined my gut. I have a hard time leaving the house because I am so uncomfortable in my gut. I wish I had never taken this drug. I was much better off before."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I am on 150mg and it has been extremely helpful for my OCD and depression. There are side effects such as dry mouth, difficulty urinating, and it takes longer to orgasm, but overall it has been very helpful."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "Started at 25mg. Week later I was taking 50mg. Mouth was dry but I could deal with that. Went up to 75mg. I was having difficulty urinating. Ok, I can deal with that as long as thats the worst. Went up to 100mg. Could not urinate at all. Went to ER and was catherized - I had to be catherized due to the amount of urine in my bladder. This was Saturday. Doctor looked up this medication and found this happens to 6% of patients- which is considered a fairly high number regarding side effects. Doc said go to urologist on Monday. Went to a very good urologist with excellent staff. They took out cathetar and I was able to urinate. Went home and urinated 2 x. By 2:00 I wasn't able to go at all. Back to urologist and got catherized again. The amount I had in my bladder was 450- - apparently that is quite a lot. Doc said this medication has 5 half lives which equals 160 hours!!! Went home with catheter. Today (thurs) catheter was removed and its 10:00pm and all is good. *knocks on wood*"

Anafranil (clomipramine) for Depression "I had tried escitalopram (Scippa) and vortioxetine (Trintellix) before, practically both were ineffective. Anafranil has been a miracle for me, within a month, it reduced my severe suffering very effectively and made me much better for 90% of my time. And it was reached quickly with a very small dosage: 20 mg a day. Minor side effects occurred during the first couple of weeks, the most unpleasant was the dry mouth and reduced libido, but it bounced back within weeks."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "1 year of being off of this drug and I’m still going through withdrawal. This pill may help your ocd, but it will completely screw up your body in other ways. It messed up all of my hormones and gave me the most painful hot flashes you could ever have to the point where it feels like your whole body is on fire. 14 months of being off of it and I still get at least 20 of these hot flashes every single day. On top of that I was shaking so much while being on this drug you would’ve thought I had Parkinson’s disease. STAY AWAY at all costs, the drug will screw up your life."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "The doctor prescribed this for intrusive thoughts and 'pure-O' OCD. The first night on these clomipramine 25mg pills I woke in sleep paralysis, and for about a week had voices telling me to end my life. I had never had voices before, or even depression really. My GP told me to hang in there. But two weeks in, I am no longer hearing the voices, or having the thoughts. I no longer feel dull. My symptoms are greatly reduced and although I still have intrusive thoughts, I move on quickly. My partner says I am very noticeably different. Other side effects I have experienced include: shaky legs in the morning (dissipates quickly), urinary hesitancy, takes longer to reach orgasm but I get there (F, 32), and reduced sex drive, as well as waking like clockwork in the night at between 2am and 4am, to go to the toilet, but I get back to sleep. A weighted blanket has helped with the sleep issues. Hang in there folks!"

For Depression "Awesome drug!! After trying almost all SSRI with no improvement at all. then the combination of mixing anafranil and lithium (I'm not bipolar) worked wonders for my depression. Have been on it for a couple of years now and still great. However sadly did not notice its full effects until probably 6 months. Felt pretty yuk for the first 6 weeks...but then slowly got better and about 12 months felt great. When nothing else worked it pretty much saved my life!"

Anafranil (clomipramine) for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I had anxiety and intrusive obsessive thoughts so bad that I had insomnia for 3 years. I was an absolute mess, lost 50 lbs, and could barely function. I ended up hospitalized for a week and put on Anafranil 50mg at night. It took about two weeks, but I started to see a light at the end of a very dark tunnel! I had already tried almost everything on the market, and Anafranil finally helped! Today marks 7 years that I have been on this medication. I feel great, and it saved my life!"

For Panic Disorder "I’m diagnosed with GAD, panic disorder and OCD. I’ve been on 150 mg of clomipramine for a week although I started this medication on a low dose in mid November. So far my panic is completely gone and OCD is mild, but I still have problems with anxiety. Is it typical to have anxiety still, at this stage in treatment?"

For Panic Disorder "Clomipramine did not work for my panic disorder. The sexual side effects were bad too. I only had success with Nardil (Phenelzine). Nardil is the best MAOI and it cured my panic and depression too. Don't waste your time on SSRIs or Tricyclics, ask for Nardil if you want real relief for Panic or Depression."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "The lowest dose of clomipramine in combo with luvox gave me dry mouth, nausea, headaches, loss of taste, weight gain, dizziness, fatigue, feeling like needing to pee, and sexual dysfunction. It made me feel numb inside. Some reduction in intensity of obsessive thoughts due to being so sedated. This drug is very old and strong and did not work for me at all. I quit cold turkey after four weeks and have never felt so depressed."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "Intense drug. Didn’t help me. Side effects were brain zaps, nausea, insomnia, suicidal thoughts, increase in depression and anxiety. Was on it for 4 months at 150mg. Quit cold turkey. Withdrawal was gnarly. I changed to ERP (exposure and response prevention), exercise and a healthy lifestyle and you may be better off."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I have OCD on few thing ,which I don't want to share. My OCD was increased last year. I felt nausea and also vomit daily on getting OCD thoughts. Initially my treatment was started with Fluvoxamine low dose and it was increased to 200 mg/day. My OCD decreased to 50% , but not eliminated completely. I sill have nausea and sometimes vomiting also. After some time I had decreased fluvoxamine dose to 100 mg/day, because I was thinking I will cover up with strong will power. But symptoms had not gone, nausea was continue and sometimes vomited also. In short, my doctor kept me on 100mg/day fluvoxamine and clonil 25 mg/daily. Later on my dose fluvoxamine (100mg/day) kept fixed and clonil dose is increased to 50mg/daily. Now its just like magic, my OCD has gone about 90% gone and there is no nausea and no vomiting. My mind is also calm and working according to present situation."

Anafranil (clomipramine) for Panic Disorder "I have been on this clomipramine since I was 9 years old. It has been the best thing for me. When I had taken myself off cold Turkey 4 years ago, I suffered greatly until deciding to go back on. But unfortunately I didn't give it enough time to work before deciding I had become immune. Try others for the next three years. A little over a month ago I decided to try again with this anafrinil, and was put on a higher dosage. 25 mg, x2 a day as needed. Now I don't have to take it everyday! Only as needed and it's an instant calming effect!"

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I started clomipramine due to a sudden rise in panic attacks and severe OCD. (which was super strange because I have only had a couple panic attacks my entire life.) My doctor said this might help my symptoms, and I could not be any happier. It has taken away my OCD symptoms about 90%. This is insane. I can't believe I am even typing this. I have had severe, awful OCD since my childhood, and now all of my intrusive thoughts are gone. If I do have them, they are fleeting and aren't debilitating like they used to be. At the beginning, I had some side effects like extreme dizziness and lack of appetite, but now I feel better and they are lessening. I am confident that this medication saved my life."

Anafranil (clomipramine) for Irritable Bowel Syndrome "This drug was a miracle for me. I have irritable bowel syndrome, my main symptoms are urgency to poop, loose stools and chronic pain in the intestines. But I had to stop taking Anafranil because it gave me a horrible skin side effect on my testicles [genitals]. If you have Irriable bowel syndrome diarrhea you should try it."

For Panic Disorder "Only lasted one day on this drug. I took 25 mg clomipramine right before bed last night and experienced exhausting, intense vivid dreams. Woke up groggy and very spacey. This lasted for a few hours before the nausea hit, which lasted most of the rest of the day. First half of the day I was very tired, but not sleepy, and would start crying randomly. I wasn't as lethargic in the afternoon, but the nausea kept me on the couch. Was prescribed for OCD cyclical thoughts feeding into my anxiety. Granted, I haven't had any such thoughts all day, though this may be due to the distraction from the side effects of the drug. For me personally, the side effects outweigh any potential benefits. I do tend to be highly sensitive to medications though and have had previous issues with antidepressants. Hope it works better for the rest of you."
