Anafranil (clomipramine) for Depression "This drug made me feel worse than anything I have ever taken in my life! It did the opposite of everything it says it does. Any bad memory came straight to the front of my head and stuck there. The drug basically made me suicidal. If this drug works for you more power to you, but I would be careful because this is what it did to me."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "This medication takes time to work. You need to be patient and give it maybe 3 months. Maybe more. It's given me my life back. From waking every day in terror, I now just wake up like a person without OCD. No SSRI drug has helped me. Clomipramine has removed the mild depression that I had for 2 years following an episode of clinical depression. It has taken away my constant anxiety, and calmed my obsessions. I'll stay on it forever."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I'm deciding to comment. I've been on clomipramine 25 mg for a month, then went up to 50 mg for a week. This is in conjunction with 300 mg fluvoximine (which I've been on for several months). I have to say that I was really sad when the meds didn't kick in right away. But since going up on the clomipramine. I have felt a big shift. My ruminations are just about gone and I seem to have more control over my mind (so I'm at about 90 % there) I'm thankful that the Lord led me to a very good physicians assistant who knew what she was doing. I've had OCD for as long as I can remember. Surprisingly I never tried suicide which is by God's grace. My OCD was over the top. But there is a huge light at the end of the tunnel. Don't give up. Some people get relief right away and for some, like me, takes awhile to really kick in. Remember, these thoughts are not yours, even though they powerfully try to make themselves seem real and true, THEY ARE NOT! Press on, the best is yet to come"

For Panic Disorder "Anafranil is the drug that changed my life. The greatest invention of psychiatry. I was at the end of the road. Every second there was a state of panic. What I read before starting Anafranil terrified me so much. I didn't want to start, especially because of what I had read about Alzheimer's and dementia. But I hope whoever reads this review will take me seriously. This drug saved my life. Yes, the first month was very difficult because of the side effects, but now I feel like myself. I live an anxiety-free life. While 1 month ago it felt like I would never come out of this hole, now life gives me incredible pleasure. I'm taking 150mg a day and it's getting better every day. Please give Anafranil a chance. I thought there was no worse case in the world than me, I tried at least 10 different drug and none of them worked, I lost hope. So if I'm healed, I'm sure everyone can recover. Do not lose hope."

For Trichotillomania "I was put on 200mg of Clomipramine (after trying a myriad of other medications for a myriad of diagnoses including SAD, GAD, Major Depressive Disorder, OCD & Bulimia). This medication was suppose to help with my OCD but I didn’t notice much help there; however, a welcoming side effect, is that it did effectively stop my excoriation disorder. I used to pick at my skin for 2-3 hours a day and now I maybe pick it 2-3 hours a week. So I am staying on 100mg of Clomipramine and starting Luvox or Fluvoxamine, for OCD. Fingers crossed it helps."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I have done extensive amount of research on the pathophysiology of OCD and what causes it. I have been suffering with harm OCD since I was around 11-12 yrs old. I have been put on fluoxetine for my OCD, panic disorder, and depression, it seemed to stop working for my OCD but my depression and panic attacks are cured! I tried clomipramine and it truly is a miracle drug, it completely cured my OCD. I am so thankful for modern medicine and the progress we are making in advancing mental health treatments."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "This is my second time being placed on this medication. Both instances were because I’ve asked for it. I’ve tried every single SSRI for OCD and absolutely nothing comes close to Clomipramine. The first time I stopped because I could’ve sworn that it fired me. But my OCD would only strike again and leave me unable to function at all…I couldn’t eat, sleep, shower, get out of bed, or even talk to family on my birthday because of how depressed I was. After being placed back on this, it was only a matter of two weeks before I recognized myself in the mirror again. Life isn’t perfect, but the medication you want to become a better person is definitely Clomipramine. It was the literal answer to my prayers."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "Saris stopped working I had up to 60 obsessions a day morphing. 1 hour toilet routine. I'd been using different ssri's for 20 years with success for OCD but for some reason none of them worked anymore. I held no hope for clomipramine at all. I'm very sensitive to drugs so they were increased very slowly. The worse side effect was dry mouth, it was like a rat had crawled in and died there but it does pass and improve. Also reading movement disorder as a side effect had me begin to be convinced I had one but I didn't believe that until they were fully working. Anyway slowly all my obsessions cleared up to the point where I can almost be the other way. I was considering many ways out of life before this started to show improvement. Now it is like I'm a slightly obsessive person with no OCD. It was a miracle for me. I was nearing the end, I had no quality of life. Give it a try."

For Irritable Bowel Syndrome "I have had IBS-D for 4 years, and it was gradually becoming worse and worse. Because of depression and OCD, my doctor put me on Anafranil 112,5mg. In spite of not helping my depression and OCD, it immensely helped my IBS-D. On Anafranil, I rarely have soft stools. And when I do, it is because I didn't follow the low FODMAP diet. My only complaint is that it caused me sexual dysfunction at doses higher than 37,5mg. It makes sense, as Anafranil is the antidepressant that causes the most sexual dysfunction. If you're searching for a med that can help your anxiety and IBS and doesn't cause as much sexual dysfunction, I would search for Amitriptyline or Nortriptyline."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I was skeptical about clomipramine but this totally changed my life. Built up slowly from 10mg to 100mg under the supervision of a GP who knew what they were doing, because I experienced hardly any nasty side effects! I believe that my OCD exists in ‘layers’ and that clomipramine peeled back several of these layers. All of my rituals - which would take hours out of every day - (for 7+ years) all kind of melted away once I got to about 50mg. Crazy. I still have ocd now, but mostly ‘Pure OCD’ in that my visible rituals have gone. I still experience a lot of doubt and anxiety, the ocd is still there, but the improvement has been more than I could ever have expected. Took several months to really kick in, and had to be this high of a dose. I still want to come off meds one day, but right now, this helps me to function and engage better with therapy."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I take 175mg of Clomipramine for OCD, dermatillomania, and treatment resistant depression for over 6 years. After about 2 months, my dermatillomania has almost vanished and my intrusive thoughts diminished greatly. The only downside is the dry mouth, but chewing gum (sugar free) helps a lot. I've tried SSRI's and they just were sedative. The side effects of clomipramine seem like a small price to pay (at least the side effects I have felt thus far) for relief from chronic OCD and depression."

Anafranil (clomipramine) for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I’ve taken Anafranil for a month now because I had been struggling with anxiety with an OCD element as well. I’m on 150mg right now. This medication is definitely helping. I take Prozac 20mg as well and I think they work better together. For me, it’s helped to stop worrying and thinking about things that don’t matter. Also, I’ve had random intrusive thoughts of uncomfortable words popping into my head. It’s made me realize how ridiculous it really is and that it’s really a bad serotonin imbalance. My mood has improved as well so I think this drug should be used more because it’s a potent drug. It’s gonna hit the anxiety/OCD hard whereas I tried Zoloft, Viibryd, Pristiq, etc and they alone usually aren’t enough. You gotta be on anafranil plus Prozac/Luvox/Paxil or some other SSRI. I’m also on Rexulti, which basically boosts the two primary medications. No side effects so far either. Hope this is helpful."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "Clomipramine gave me back my quality of life and ability to function. My OCD no longer controls me. Obsessive thoughts are less frequent and normally when they do happen I’m able to shrug them off and they don’t torment me. Only side effect is dry mouth and muscle twitches for a few days when increasing dose."

For Depression "This drug was a breakthrough drug for me. I’d tried everything from prozac to ketamine with partial success. Clomipramine levelled out my problems getting to sleep and staying asleep. Ideation was just a fact of life for me until I started this drug. Of course counseling, exercise, diet, and stress management are part of any worthwhile treatment plan for depression, and those haven’t changed. It’s become easier to make and keep good habits. Orgasms take a bit longer, but what antidepressant doesn’t have that effect in men?"

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I started this medicine last year. It does help with intrusive thoughts but for me it was too many side effects. Started at 25mg and it took me forever to get to 50mg. At 50mg the tremors were bad, high heart rate, restless, insomnia, night sweats, constipation, urgency to urinate, feeling bloated. So I figured out why the constipation and bloating, it is because this medicine contains lactose. Currently tapering down. And terrible vivid nightmares."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "This drug changed my life. After having OCD since early childhood, and it getting increasingly debilitating through adolescence I was finally put on this after trialling many SSRI's and Effexor. I feel like it's literally impossible for me to feel anxiety on clomipramine, and my depression has disappeared too. I've been on it around 18 months now. The side effects at the start were terrible, not going to sugar coat it. I fainted so much, couldn't poo for so long (got hospitalised cos it got that bad) but magnesium citrate helps that. Give it time to work. There is a reason this medication is so well rated once its in your system"

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "This stuff literally saved my life. After failing probably 10 drugs and therapy for extreme OCD, clomipramine (75 mg/day) changed my life like nothing else. We have to be very careful because I'm also epileptic, and clomipramine particularly severely lowers the seizure threshold, but I wouldn't stop it for anything. It gave me my life and my sanity back."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I had SSRIs work for 20 years, for some reason they stopped. I had a relapse with OCD and was having 70 obsessions a day, some compulsions too. I went on clomipramine and they started to slowly decrease. It started with one chronic obsession going and slowly got rid of them all, well 90% of them. It took 3 plus months to really feel it. I went up very slowly as I'm drug-sensitive and had the odd lapse where I was so frightened they weren't working, but it just got better and better. Now I'm functioning. I was so chronic, I was going to give up if it didn't work. Definitely with this drug, give it up to 6 months before deciding it's not working. But I believe the person reading this will definitely find peace from an awful debilitating illness called OCD. Try it. Give it a good go. It is rough going at first, it can feel worse, but it will get better. Hold on."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "I started this medicine 2 weeks ago, I had been majorly depressed for about 3 years and OCD longer, it started off ok and I felt better almost a day in, this continued as I increased the dosage, I slept better I was less stressed happier and could relax in a chair which was almost impossible when depressed intrusive thoughts appeared every so often but not as severe on, it was life changing, until day 13 after taking 100mg a day for the past 3 days, I had dissociation, fast heartbeat, panic, anxiety, paranoia hallucinations, shaking, everything turns dark and I smelt a pungent varnish bark smell. I had a trip to A&E for 2 nights, the medication has been stopped and I am left in a dark strange scary place with strange perceptions. I am bed ridden and afraid to go anywhere. I hope I at least am able to recover as I was on them less than 2 weeks and just hoping I get something to come off the drug with. It is seriously brutal - it is like winning football match then suddenly dumped in a graveyard with screaming voices and strangers."

For Obsessive Compulsive Disorder "Clomipramine has been a life saver. It has taken away taken that away nearly 90% of intrusive thoughts. Over the next week the doctors will increase the dose to 150mg and I believe it will help a lot. The first 4 weeks was tough on the drug and I suggest anyone trying the drug to hang on and stick in there. Side effects are it takes longer to orgasm and dry mouth from time to time. Over all a thumbs up from me"

For Depression "I am taking Clomipramine for postnatal OCD, anxiety and depression. The only reason I haven’t given this drug 10/10 is because it has taken 6 months to fully feel it’s effects. I remember reading these reviews at 2/3 months and thinking that it just wasn’t working for me. Side effects: dry mouth, tremor, facial flushing, immediate headache if consuming alcohol. These have mostly reduced but I still can’t really drink alcohol at all. I believe a combination of this medication, therapy (ERP works best for the OCD!), meditation, mindfulness and time have helped me get to this stage. It’s like a new, better level of the drug opens up after 3 months and again after 5 months, that was my experience anyway. If you’re in despair reading this I would suggest speaking to your doctor about Clomipramine, it’s an older tricyclic but has worked much better for me than other SSRI’s. Good luck!"
