"I've suffered chronic sinusitis for years and after building up a tolenrece for most antibiotics I was put on clarithromycin. After the first day I was experience severe diarrhea and the awful taste in my mouth, it's now day 4, after the constant chemical taste (absolute torture) and waking up two nights in a row from nightmares I quit. Done taking this and will NEVER take it again. Wasn't helping my sinus infection anyways."

"Clarithromycin seems to be quite effective with sinusitis. I hate the side effects though. This antibiotic produces a bitter/metallic taste in my tongue. I haven't experienced diarrhea, but I now poop once in the morning and once in the evening. I used to poop once a day before taking this antibiotic."

"500mg X 2 a day for 7 days First couple of days on it I felt a little queezy with lose bowels. I did wake every night with the horrible taste but nothing to bad. On day 4 the pain in my head has really improved but still coughing. I have another G P appt Monday incase 7 days is not long enough to clear it."

"I was taking clarithromcyin for sinusitis and it worked but I got severe back pain with the medication and a very nasty taste in my mouth. My stomach hurt so then I started taking it with food and the pain never came back"

"I've suffered from chronic sinusitis and post nasal drip for a while now. Biaxin is the only drug which worked for me, my PND started decreasing after one day and my nasal passages were completely clear by day 4. As for side effects it increased my appetite and sent me to the bathroom more often than usual. As for the nausea and metallic taste in mouth that most people reported, that only occurred on my last day of treatment thankfully. It's a small price to pay for the relief I got however."

"Only been taking this antibiotic for pleurisy and a sinus infection for 3 days. Day 1 bad bitter taste in mouth and terrible thirst. Day 2 diarrhea. Day 3 the worst headache I have ever had. This drug should come with a GIANT warning on the packet. DON'T take this drug it has vile side effects. My Dr has told me to stop it immediately. So I have!"

"It has been 2 months since I was put on Biaxin (see my entry on March 3). I only got through 4 days of a 10 day course. I have had diarrhea for 2 months, have lost 20 lbs, have nausea off and on every day. I have had many work ups and stool samples, all negative. My ears have been ringing (tinnitus) since I went on Biaxin. All day and night. It has really taken a huge toll on my life. I wish the doctor had told me to take probiotics. I have esophageal candida from good bacteria being wiped out. My gastroenterologist has to wait until my GI heals a bit before a colonoscopy and a long course of anti fungals to tame the candida. And the sinus thing? Still present. Biaxin has really messed up my body, and my life."

"On third day of treatment for severe sinus infection that Amoxy wouldn't clear. Drainage has slowed somewhat but nose really dry and painful. Taking flonase and mucinex along with singulair. Side effects: anxiety, irritability, strange depressive thoughts and metal taste in mouth, burning urination and slight tummy ache."

"I had a cold and cough which would not go away and a sinus infection for 2 weeks. I was prescribed clarithromycin and after 50 mins of taking it got the biggest headache/migraine in my life. Ended up in emergency on a drip and on anti migraine medication. This drug was not good for me and had terrible side effects, will never use this again!"

"This is not the first time I have been on this medicine for recurrent sinus infections, I don't like it but it always seems to work. I am taking 2 500mg once per day. The disgusting taste in my mouth generally starts around day 2, and headaches around day 3. I can't sleep when I am taking it, but so far no other issues, I will be glad to stop taking it, 4 more days to go."

"12.29.16 I too suffer from sinusitis due to a deviated septum. I've become allergic to penicillin, sulfa & doxycycline, made me lose skin, & I'm sensitive to zpack. I know clarithromycin is in the same family as zpack but man did this work for me within 2 days. No colors, facial pain, cough, etc. I do get that weird metallic taste but I just deal with it. I eat greek yogurt with the doses (500mg twice a day) to avoid stomach pain & diarrhea due to the good bacteria in the greek yogurt. I do find myself getting hyper at times while on it & tired but its worth it. As far as not sleeping I use marijuana an INDICA strain (yes it makes a difference) in the evenings to help sleep. I try to stay hydrated as well, gatorade. It worked wonders for me."

"After taking this medication for two days I got a massive headache which I originally thought was from the sinus infection. I kept taking it for three more days with a continual massive headache. Finally I looked up side effects of this and this has to be the cause. The headaches make me nauseous and Tylenol and Advil don’t even touch it. I threw the rest out and can’t wait until this is out of my system. I have never had such horrible headaches and contemplated having my husband take me to the emergency room for pain relief. I will never ever take this again. It caused me four wasted days on the couch with a pounding headache. Horrible."

"Did clear up the sinus infection i've had raging for a month or so. The nausea is crippling - make sure to take it with food. Definitely experienced the metallic taste - it's disgusting. Interacts with albuterol which is making my life a little extra hard considering that I've had bronchitis/asthma for the past month and a half."

"First off, this tablet makes me feel SO nauseous, however, I've had trouble hearing anything recently and it has picked up since I was prescribed this drug. Though it always leaves an awful, hard to describe metallic tangy taste on the sides of my tongue, it is SO disgusting! I went through a whole packet of mints in 1 hour trying to get rid of it. I always feel sick taking this but it works. Embarrasing to say, I have to poop twice a day now, but they're always small bits! It's uncomfortable, but it gets the job done."

"Had the most bizarre dreams with this tablet. Woke up feeling drugged out and nauseous. Bad headache, bubbly tummy due to wind, foggy head. I only took 3 tablets and will never touch this tablet again."

"The first 3 days of taking this I was having hot flashes and felt nauseous from the taste of the pills. So I ate a lot of throat lozenges to try and get rid of the taste. I would wake up in the middle of the night because I could taste it still. I have one more day left to take the medicine. Sinus is gone which is fantastic. Doctor told me to take probiotics everyday or I could get a yeast infection. I took probiotics everyday and towards the end of taking these pills I had a little painful urinating and now I think I have a yeast infection."

"I've never had any issues with my sinuses thus far in my life. I developed cold like symptoms in mid March and thought it would just go away with time. Well no such luck. I thought I had developed allergies out of no where so I started taking Claritin D with Mucinex. The Claritin D offered no relief so I finally made an appointment with Otolaryngologist. He prescribed clarithromycin for 10 days, once in the morning and once at night. After a few days, all my symptoms went away. I could finally breathe out my nose and the sinus pressure vanished. The only thing is by the middle of the day, I could feel the pressure coming back. I also missed a dose one morning and by the end of the day all the symptom came right back. There is also a bitterness to the pill, so I usually eat it with food. I am only on my first round but I hope the second round gets rid of it. If not, my doctor said I would have to get a CT scan."

Biaxin (clarithromycin) "The first night I was nauseated, but thought it was just from the sinus infection. Two nights later I started to itch all over, thought maybe it was something else and have been itching ever since (2 days ago). Also have thrush. I have been eating yogurt and it's not doing anything for it. I suppose the itching isn't as bad as the pain, but it's equally as annoying."

"This is the third day of taking clarithromycin 500 mg twice a day. I've had a weird taste in my mouth since I took the first pill, which is keeping me awake at night. My upper stomach hurts, I feel like I'm going to vomit, and my throat hurts. I did have a strange pain in my back, but that seems to have gone now. Thing is, I've got such bad sinusitis and am on my second lot of antibiotics, which is making my chronic migraine worse, so I don't really want to stop these. I will see if I can take one this morning without being sick."

"Not entirely sure what rating to give this. I’ve been taking This antibiotic for 4 days for sinus congestion + Eustachian tube blockage... Not sure if it’s normal to have it kick in by now or not? I do feel a slight relief of pressure in my middle ear, I’m assuming that means it’s working? Help?"

"Prescribed Clarithromycin 500mg twice a day for 4 weeks for a resistant sinus infection (cannot take penicillin derivatives). It seems to be working 4 days in - only 24 to go! Only side effects are bad taste in mouth (everyone get this!) and some diarrheoa but since I also suffer from IBS, this in a strange way helps."

Biaxin (clarithromycin) "My 11 year old daughter has sinusitis and the Biaxin has quickly helped her feel better, but she vomited once on the 3rd day and again on the 4th day, both in the morning. Not sure if it's the Biaxin, the dripping from her sinuses, or the combination. The doctor didn't seem too concerned unless it persists. "

"I was put on clarithromycin for a mild sinus infection after two weeks being untreated. Side effects (GI upset and unusual tiredness) were mild but irritating. Symptoms (fever, headache, postnasal drip) were greatly relieved by 3 days of taking the drug."

"Was prescribed clarithromycin for sinusitis and ear infection after zpack didn’t kick it. Took it until the 4 day of the 10 days course before I had to call doc with s.o.s. The metallic taste & little bit of stomach upset were okay but by night 4 I had the headache of death, and woke up every morning a little shaky with a headache. Awful. When the cure is worse than the disease. Was represcribed Cefuroxime Axetil so we’ll see if this can kick whatever it is making me bleh without killing me in the process."

"I was prescribed this medicine for sinus and flu and it has now left me with a constant buzzing in my Right ear and my own and people's voices are distorted. They sound like chipmunks. I have reported this to the regulatory people."
