"I was on Amlodipine, but they were making my ankles swell so badly. Doc put me on 8 mg Candesartan. My blood pressure started to rise, not lower, I had bad pain in my jaw to the point I thought it was my back molar tooth. Dentist said it wasn't my tooth but maybe a gum infection. Five days of antibiotics and no let-up of pain. I was taking up to 10 pain relievers a day. Blood pressure into the 170/103, no less than 147/90 for weeks. Asked doc if tooth pain could be causing this, he said yes. Back to emergency appointment to the dentist. Told me nothing wrong with my tooth, it must be gum disease. I mentioned my blood pressure being high because of pain, he then asked if I was taking tablets for it. Found out then it could be the tablets causing my pain and high blood pressure. I stopped taking the Candesartan straight away, and after a week off them, happy to say my blood pressure is back to normal, and tooth pain fading away nicely."

"I've been on this drug for approx one month and finally went to a chiropractor for extreme neck pain radiating to the back of my head. When that didn't improve my condition, I researched the side effects of this med. Guess what! Neck pain! I stopped them yesterday and already am feeling a bit better. Also don't feel so tired and achy now too. No Advil yet today... will do my own research now on other meds for high BP and try to find one with a side effect I can live with. Then I will revisit my GP."

"I have had a terrible time with this medication. Has not brought my blood pressure down. I have been having heart palpitations, sharp pains in my chest that are so severe I thought I was having a heart attack, also troubles breathing. I was fine on a lower dose with side effects, but it wasn't bringing my blood pressure down, so the doctor put it up to 24 mg from 8 mg. Also been coughing like crazy and troubles breathing. I hope other people have better luck with it. Just wanted to let people know if you're having these symptoms, that's what it is. Thanks."

"I'm on 2 mg Candesartan for mild hypertension. A month in, I had such bad chest pain, my Dr. sent me for an ECG. It was normal, thankfully! Since then, I've gone on to have daily headaches and dizziness. I started HRT at the same time as Candesartan, and I put it down to that. I've now started with a painful neck, pain down both sides, and a niggle in my back. I didn't know Candesartan had all these side effects. I phoned a pharmacist this morning, and she's told me to stop immediately. I'm so glad I found this forum, and I hope this post helps others with the same symptoms."

"Until two weeks ago, I had been on this medication for at least a decade, 16 mg morning. It controlled my BP pretty well. Seemingly unconnected, two years ago I developed what was diagnosed as very painful hip bursitis (both sides) when walking - I was a daily 4-5 km walker. The pain steadily worsened to the point I could no longer walk. From about eight months ago, I was literally only able to hobble around the house. In desperation, two months ago, I changed my GP. He couldn't find anything wrong other than the bursitis, but as a last resort - two weeks ago - suggested stopping the candesartan for a few days (it has a short half-life, so the effect would show up within 36-48 hours). Lo and behold!! 48 hours later, I was able to walk freely. The next day, I walked a km and have stepped it up over the last ten days back to an average of 5 km a day. NO PAIN! I have my life back! I now find that back and leg pain are this med's stated number one side effect. I would appreciate having the kinetics explained."

"I've been taking 16 mg of this medication for approximately 4 months. My blood pressure is the best it's been in 35 years and my heart rate is the lowest it's been in my entire life. The problem is I have absolutely no energy and feel worn out all the time. I wish there was a happy medium. I have been extremely active all my life. I hate feeling down all the time."

"35-year-old Caucasian male. I have taken this drug (the + version with the hydrochlorothiazide diuretic) for several years, and it has kept my blood pressure where it should be. No side effects. I initially switched to this ARB due to the persistent cough associated with ACE inhibitors. Recommended."

Candesartan "Started Atacand HCT with BP ~ 180/90 & bad headache. Five hours later with BP unchanged, took 2 aspirin for headache after verifying compatibility with manufacturer. Two hours later BP 132/77. Fifteen hours after first dose, took second dose of Atacand HCT with BP 166/93. BP remained at ~ 160/90 for next 14 hours. After two doses, six aspirin, and 36 hours, BP dropped to ~ 135/78 and stayed. After a month, a high BP reading was 141/76 and a low 105/66. Noted: lim BP increase with exertion."

"Started Candesartan 6/2020, 16 mg. Seem to be okay until February 2021, blood pressure started to rise. I'm assuming because of the pandemic, couldn't work out like I wanted to. Doctor increased dosage to 32 mg. Since then, my life has been pretty scary. Every morning before breakfast and evening before dinner, I'm so lightheaded, depressed, crying because I don't know if I'm about to pass out. Can't go in the sun, get too dehydrated. Acid reflux every evening. Can't concentrate due to tinnitus. And pressure still high. At the pharmacy now to get a different drug."

"For some reason, this medicine seems to give me nasty palpitations and arrhythmia. It also makes me really tired, even on an 8 mg dose. I tried switching to another medication, and these side effects went away. Sadly, I had to go back on candesartan because the other medicine caused really bad vertigo. Side effects came back after starting candesartan again, so the correlation is pretty clear. Hopefully, I will find something that works for me since I really do NOT want to take candesartan anymore. I know several people who tolerate this medicine well, but for me, it's absolutely terrible. We are all different."

"For the past few months, I have noticed a fast and irregular heartbeat, which at times scared me. I stopped taking the candesartan three days ago, and I feel so much better. I will be visiting the doctor as soon as possible."

"Have been on 16 mg of candesartan for one week, now gone down to 8 mg, and considering stopping. My blood pressure was always borderline, but I was put on this drug anyway. I have floaters in my eyes if my potassium goes too high or I don't drink enough. I have muscle aches and clicking joints when I move them. I feel tired and lethargic most of the day, I have also gained anxiety, which I've never had before. Not a great medication for me."

"I'm a multi-stroke survivor who has silent migraines with auras; malignant hypertension (MHP) and Crohn's. Have tried many BP medications, but the adverse effects I couldn't tolerate, especially the dizziness (already a fall risk after the strokes). A doctor seeing that I'm sensitive to medications and hypokalemic put me on Candesartan as it's a potassium-sparing medication; has a strong BP lowering effect; and fewer side effects than ACE inhibitors. No adverse effects. One of the few medications that is like a sugar pill to me to take. It's not enough to control my MHP itself even at 32 mg, but combined with another and a water pill it can get my 230/120 BP down to 120/80s. I still have silent migraines with auras with Candesartan, but it, and elimination of caffeine, reduces the auras to about once a month. Overall, very pleased with the medication."

"Replying to Paul7, I was on 4 mg candesartan for 2 years, and I could not sleep at night due to the side effect of nasal congestion plus urinary tract infection. I have switched recently to indapamide 1.5 mg SR diuretic, which seems to work well along with my amlodipine 5 mg. Statins also gave me sinus/nasal problems, so I have reduced the dosage and now fine. Hope this helps."

"I started off on the lowest dose of candesartan for high blood pressure, then I was increased to the current 32 mg over 12 months. Luckily, I had no side effects, but no effect on BP at all! I started off at 160+/90+ hr 70+/- and I am still at that now. I'm 56 years old, not overweight, eat healthily, now on clopidogrel as well and a low dose of omeprazole (16 years), feel like I'm starting to rattle!!"

"At my request, following online research, I asked my GP to change me from Losartan to Candesartan, as I was not getting satisfactory BP control. In less than a week, my BP has gone from 160/89 down to 135/80 on 12 mg. I feel fantastic and have no obvious side effects. I wish I'd made the change sooner."

"Diagnosed with high BP (160/100) a few months ago. Tried Ramipril, then Felodipine, but neither brought BP down, and I had heart palpitation side effects. Tried Candesartan, and it reduced BP slightly with minimal side effects. Went from 8 mg to 16 mg to 20 mg with slight reductions of BP to around 140/90. Doctor suggested further increases, but after research, I persuaded him to combine drugs and have 2.5 mg amlodipine too. This is what had worked for my dad. I had to push for it, but mixing them has worked a treat. Not many side effects, and now BP down to 120/80. If you are struggling to find a med that works, keep going, and once you find something that isn't giving you bad side effects, I recommend trying two meds. For me, it worked a treat at reducing BP more effectively."

"This pill works well but has bad side effects. Pain in the back of the neck, back, feet, legs, arms, and even fingers. Stomach issues. Anxiety every evening. Palpitations, such as a thumping heartbeat. Dizziness. Tight throat and trouble breathing. Headaches. Ear pain and head congestion. Trouble sleeping. Tinnitus. Itching. All this on just 8mg. Does lower blood pressure from 160/80 to 130/72. Blood pressure rises in the evening for some reason. I am a female aged 73."

"Took two Candesartan 8 mg. 12 hours after the second dose, I started to feel something in my throat. The beginning of an allergic reaction. I had quite severe throat swelling. It only lasted 12 hours. Be careful when you start using this drug."

"I was put on Candesartan from the start of this year. After that, I started having constant symptoms of respiratory infections, like the symptoms when you are developing a cold or flu. Turns out it's one of the possible side effects of this drug. Other symptoms have been brain fog. Going to switch back to amlodipine, which I was taking before this."

"Started at 4 mg, then increased to 8 mg for high blood pressure; it is not controlling my BP in the least, seems to be like water. However, I have to blow my nose a lot, have palpitations, sore swollen legs, great fatigue, and huge anxiety. I am stopping this useless medication."

"I have high blood pressure (BP), about 140/100, and after several studies, the doctor prescribed me Xiletil (Candesartan Cilexetil). After 1 week, my BP dropped to 130/80, and 1 month after to 120/80. I truly recommend this product. So far, it hasn't caused any side effects on me."

"Been on this drug now for 6 weeks, also amlodipine 5 mg, 8 mg candesartan. Only side effect is swollen ankles, not sure which one is causing this. Don't like being on them, don't like taking them, but BP has come down. Maybe Doc will reduce them soon, I hope so. I was told by another GP that statin side effects are worse than the problem."

"I can fully agree with many of the views, been on different levels of Candesartan sorted with 4 mg, no improvement in blood pressure. It wandered around from highs of 180/100 to lows of 111/68. Increased to 8 mg, had pains in my neck and back, along with low heart rate, nasal congestion. And also picked up tiredness and some depression. All in all, a disaster. Great if it works for you. I'm back at the doctors to discuss further."
