"I had a painful tooth which got infected and caused swelling of my right jaw within only 3 days. Doctor prescribed me this antibiotic amoxicillin/clavulanate, 875mg dose 2x to take for 10 days and go to a root canal on the 7th day. I have a phobia taking medications because of previous bad side effects. Since I have taken plain Amoxicillin many times without any major problems, gave this a go. Took one pill in the morning with my breakfast & 2 hours later got violently ill, throwing up until I couldn't, literally, the acid was burning my stomach and throat. Five mins later, started peeing from my butt for 30 mins, liquid diarrhoea, I was very weak and spent in bed. I only took one single pill. Doctor said it is an bad reaction, now have to figure out what to take bec I am allergic to most of the antibiotics and the tooth pain is on the next level."

"Do not take amoxicillin/clavulanate antibiotic EVER! Doctor prescribes me this antibiotic for a bacterial infection, which I did not have, the labs test came up virus later. I did not know that this amoxicillin/clavulanate is just another name for Augmentin because I took the latter years ago and spent one whole day in the bathroom vomiting and diarrhoea. Here we go, took this unknowingly and guess what, same reaction, started jetting out from both ends violently at the same time. And I only took one pill. I just do not know the effectiveness of this drug, because I can't damn keep this pill down in the stomach for more than 30 mins. Now I know I will never touch this stuff EVER AGAIN! Took amoxicillin many times never had that reaction, apart from minor stomach discomfort. NEVER AGAIN!"

"I was prescribed Amoxicillin for a tooth abscess/infection. The medicine worked great and cleared it up. Side effects: Slight Yeast infection (quickly warded off by eating plenty of plain greek probiotic yogurt). Also, my stomach was fine throughout the whole course, but once I finished the medication (6 days later) I have come down with nausea and diarrhea and dizziness that lasted for 3 days. It still beats a toothache. "

Augmentin (amoxicillin / clavulanate) "I took Augmentin back in April 2016 to treat sinus and extreme cough/chest congestion. Within the first 24 hours I had a rash in all the places nobody would wants a rash. It was debilitating.I called the dr. back and said I’m not taking this. I can’t do it. Now here I am 3 1/2 years later and I have the same thing. What prescription do they send to the pharmacy you ask? None other than Augmentin. I called them back and said absolutely not!!! I’m not going through this nightmare again!!!Now I’m stuck waiting for the DR to call me tomorrow to hopefully give me something else. Meanwhile I’m on week 2 of this and taking prednisone which is causing me insomnia and I still can’t lay down long enough to even try to sleep without choking. I guess what I would say is if you want to try Augmentin go for it. What happened to me doesn’t mean it will happen to you. But just an FYI I do medical billing and I asked several of my clients APN and MD if they would recommend Augmentin and they all said NO."

"Ive taken amoxicillin with clavulanate twice and love this drug its stronger than plain amoxicillin, so the first pill always comes on a bit strong. I've used this for jaw infections from bad teeth, for ear infection that I got from strep throat. Also in the past I had taken an awful drug called cipro I was crippled for months couldn't walk lost my job etc. If you're ok with penicillin this drug is godsend I eat yogurt and full stomach when I take it and I never have any problems other then getting thirsty often and i don't exercise on it makes me nauseous and I have no problems working while taking it even though my job is physical labour. I'm 29 male by the way"

Augmentin (amoxicillin / clavulanate) "I took it for a severely abscessed tooth. It did clear up after 5 days (2 1000mg tabs a day). However I felt horrible the entire time. Gave me so much anxiety that I had 2 panic attacks. I had headaches, stomach pain and diarrhea. No appetite even though you have to eat in order to tolerate the medicine. My infection was really bad and I'm thankful that the augmentin cleared it up but I'm not sure if I would be willing to take it again."

Augmentin (amoxicillin / clavulanate) "I had an infection caused by cat bites & scratches on my hand (my cat got caught in a vine by his tail and was in a complete panic; I freed him from the vine, however, during that process he latched onto my hand and bit and scratched - he is ok, thank goodness). I was prescribed this medication; it took time, yet it did work to eliminate the infection. The side-effects of 2 pills/day of 875mg each (total/day = 1,750mg) for 10 days had a strong effect on me. I did not follow-up with the hospital, which I should have done. I would emphasize that if anyone is to take that amount of this medication, to consult with their doctor when side effects are seen."

"This stuff sucks, period. I rarely have problems with any meds, I've taken antibiotics for several reasons in my life, always gonna have some discomfort or side effects, but this stuff can't even work properly because you just puke it up, I got to my second dose of the 875/125 mg and its pointless...projectile vomiting and diarrhea, took with meals and pro biotics, it doesn't matter...I don't care what anybody else says, how is the other meds or pro biotics or food or anything supposed to work if you just puke within an hour or two of taking it? I have even asked other doctors and people who work at hospitals, augmentin is a broad antibiotic used by general practitioners who don’t know specifically what to target, so they throw augmentin at it to just generally treat stuff knowing full well the side effects and that it is a bad and low rated medicine...it “may” work on some people but I feel that number of people is arguably lower than the people it causes problems with."

"i went to my pcp after a week of suffering from what i believed to be both a throat and sinus infection. He prescribed me 875mg amoxicillin with clavulanate. He stated it was a strong dosage, and reminded me to take with food, preferably some sort of yogurt or probiotic. My symptoms were fairly severe, but less than 2 days after starting this antibiotic I began to feel better. I'm now 5 days in, and 90% of my symptoms have subsided. I have had 0 side effects thus far. no upset stomach, no nausea, nothing. im very pleased with this antibiotic."

Augmentin (amoxicillin / clavulanate) "I was prescribed Augmentin for a severe infection at the root of the tooth (I don't even see dental abscess listed as an indication for use here, but the dentist seemed enthused). I was in absolute agony, and the infection had to be cleared up before the tooth could be pulled. Well, first came the sticker shock! I couldn't believe my prescription was over $30 for a generic version, but figured this had to be good stuff. Two days later no improvement, but explosive watery diarrhea every couple of hours despite probiotics. Having been a caregiver, I recognized a C. diff infection. Sure enough, Googling confirmed that Augmentin is notorious for inducing this! I knew this wouldn't be tolerable for the remainder of the course of treatment, plus it can lead to colitis, so I begged to be switched to a "plain" antibiotic. After a day on that, I already feel so much better, and thank goodness the C. diff seems to be resolving on its own. The $2 price tag for amoxicillian was nice, too!"

"I took this drug for a bad abscess tooth and sinus infection. I took the probiotic pill and ate a lot of yogurt. It worked very well for me. The diarea was minimal. I only had small amount 2 times. I took Imodium 2 times in 10 days. Today is day 11. Two teeth removed and I'm done with the meds. I read some not so good stuff but if you take as prescribed and ALWAYS take a probiotic and eat lot's of yogurt you should be just fine. As for bowel movements they weren't normal but nothing to worry about. Now they should return to normal."

Augmentin (amoxicillin / clavulanate) "My 16 month old daughter was prescribed this for an ear infection, her first ear infection ever. She's never been on antibiotics before. This drug is tearing up her insides. We're on day four of ten and I'm not giving it to her anymore. Going to the dr today for other options. She's been crying, screaming, writhing with stomach pain and I feel like the cure is FAR worse than the ear infection!!! Wish I'd known how strong it was before I picked it up. Horrible!!!"

"I have only been taking this for 24 hrs due to an infection from a dog bite. I have been throwing up for 12 hrs straight, have the worst headache in my life, low grade fever, and heartburn. I seriously had to sleep on the bathroom floor due to the lack of energy. I will NEVER take this again!! My husband googled side effects for this medicine and found this site, thank goodness. I thought I was losing my mind. I have to wait until tomorrow to get a different medication. you could not force me to take this ever again!"

Augmentin (amoxicillin / clavulanate) "Strange reactions. I am allergic to sulfa drugs - not to be confused with sulfur. There are no sulfa in Augmentin. I am taking 825/125, 1 every 12 hours. I've noticed the following - none of which are currently severe. (Lots of torso itching - my back, sides, stomach, breasts. Bowel movements are slow and daily, but it feels like my muscles don't work as good as they should be. A little TMI but .. experienced some vaginal itching that caused discomfort while urinating and wiping (yeast infection?). Not serious yet, also could have been caused by PMS. Other then these I have just been exhausted, no appetite, a bit of insomnia once every couple days. I understand my body is fighting things off. But I wish I had known about the symptoms beforehand so I could have been prepared to hibernate for 2 weeks."

"I took this combination for bronchitis 125mg. It has caused severe lip swelling (an allergy?). Even a week later I am still having the swelling. I also got a yeast infection. I am not allergic to the amoxicillin however the clavulante is the culprit. Did you know it can cause death? "

Augmentin (amoxicillin / clavulanate) "I started Augmentin on Thursday morning because I had typhoid. My doctor insisted it will clear it and make me feel better. Since Thursday, I have experience extreme diarrhea, nausea, and body pains. I wake up 8 -10 times during the night to vomit and stool. Both happens simultaneously and as at this morning of the fourth day, I feel like I might never get better. I am going to stop it. I have no more strength to even puke or sit up. I can't lie on my belly or back either and my two sides are aching seriously due to the constant support"

"I have taken this for four days. On day two I noticed I was extremely agitated. I suspected the antibiotic but didn't look into it. Day three was worse. I began to have thoughts of suicide and hateful thoughts I had never thought before. Today I stopped taking it after googling the side effects. Interestingly enough I didn't have diarrhea or cramping but did have nausea."

"Within and hour of taking one pill I was in so much pain.... my stomach had me balled up into the fetal position, then severe diarrhea and vomiting began! If one pill can cause so much havoc I'd hate to see what a second one will do(I will never use this med again).....this was hands down one of the worst and most painful nights of my life! My present state is laying on the bathroom floor "

"I was given 875 mg dosage of amox-clav for a bacterial infection. Been on the medication for one week and no side effects except for the first day. I was pre warned about the side effects before I started. I take each dose 12 hours apart and break the pill into 2 smaller pieces so they are easier to swallow. I eat a slice of bread and milk with each dose. The first day I drank water and 30 minutes later I had horrific heart burn. Next time tried milk and no side effects. Coughing and phlegm are decreased greatly. Doctor said to make sure a probiotic is taken with this medication."
