I was just prescribed it, 10 mg to start, and before bedtime. I tried it last summer but stopped it because I developed diarrhea. My current doc said to try it again. I always seem to get whatever side effects are reported in the gastro category. So I'm not looking forward to this as I'm already miserable enough as it is
I was wondering if anyone has taken Elavil for abdominal pain from IBS?

I was put on Elavil several years back and had terrible side effects from it I was so sick taking it that I now list it as being allergic to it I could not function at any level while I was on it and stopped within 2 days of starting it my wife had the same exact experience I did and she also stopped it immediately and also list it as being allergic to it good luck hope you find some help
I took Elavil (i.e., Amitriptyline) several years ago for anxiety, but the most that I got from it was better night's sleep, due to its sedating side effect. As I'm certain that you've already checked, the risk of potential side effects (i.e., listed below) seem quite counterproductive in treating "IBS"? However, your doctor may think that if the side effects are slight and tolerable, a good night's sleep may improve your "IBS" issues. Or, he may be having you use it for an entirely different reason? Sorry that I don't have more advice to offer! Good luck, and please keep me/us updated!
It is my understanding that the Brand Name "Elavil" is no longer available(?), thus, you might be prescribed the generic form: "Amitriptyline"?
Common Elavil side effects may include: constipation, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, upset stomach;
mouth pain, unusual taste, black tongue; appetite or weight changes;
The most commonly encountered side effects of "Amitriptyline" include weight gain, gastrointestinal symptoms like constipation, xerostomia (i.e., the sensation of oral dryness), dizziness, headache, and somnolence. Feb 16, 2023
