Hi, I suffer from a torn rotator cuff and am in constant pain especially at night. My doctor prescribed me four 50mg tablets of Tramadol a day or as needed. She told me to take two at bedtime. Will I be okay taking three? And what's the max mg I can take every day?
I just took three tablets of 50mg Tramadol. Will I be okay?

This get's very irritating, To have old questions responded this started in 2014, Let's all check the dates on questions so these don't keep coming up for years for the original Poster, I don't understand why our site does not remove them in a reasonable amount of time.
Hello administrators; I know it can't be that hard and you're all still there because I have had more and more of my answers held and never get posted on questions that someone wants of needs an answer right away.
Chuck,
You are so right on about this issue!
You put your heart and soul into some complex question, only to find out it is 3-4 years old !
As you know, 3-4 years is dinosaur moments when it comes to health care.
Recycling ends up with 2-3 pages that you have to then read through to make sure your answer isn't already posted.
Hitting delete after 20 min is NOT my idea of fun and no "warm & fuzzy moment of trying to help someone.
It seems to happen when the boards or slow.
While this is a hot topic, I've got another one that is a "pisser".
There will be a new question that requires a prompt response based on the tag line.
It's like should I go to the ER kinda questions.
I look to make sure it's not 5 years old first.
Next I see it was posted 1-2 days before!
I sure hope they DID go when they were not getting a response!
Where was it for the last day ?
Perhaps I'm not understanding the process but I really feel bad when no one responded to a potential serious condition.
Thanks for allowing me to vent. It's better than that first morning cup of coffee. Lol...
I hope I don't lose this to "Pending Approval".
;-)
I actually think it's good that people are still having the conversation years later, the person who originally posted got their answer a long time ago, but what if someone else has the same question now? They will still be reading the replies no matter when they were posted. And because of advice changes over the years, especially in health care, it's always good to allow people to respond to a topic in case there is something new and important to share.
Hi Dave,
I totally agree.
I think starting a new question would provide a better response. People ignore the old dated questions.
Start a new thread and, IMHO, you will get answer of better quality.
Thanks for bringing this up.
Anyone else have an opinion on this issue ?
I Agree with davexwatts as it is my personal experience. I am in agony from Rotator cuff shoulder pain with nerve damage. I Saw GP 10/30/17. RX'd 1 or 2. 50 mg Tramadol X6hrs. Barely takes edge off. Added 4 ibuprofen with it. Pain was then tolerable but not for long. Then added tylenol for break through pain 3 hrs after taking Tramadol and ibuprofen. The pain awakens me at the 3 hr mark so I take meds round the clock never more than 2 or 3 hrs of sleep since pain started early Sept. Dr. Referred me to ortho on 11/13. My "pain cocktail" no longer works. I found this sight through google search today to see if anyone else had a similar situation. So in this sense I am grateful this thread has not closed. At this point I'd welcome a drug induced comatose state until my ortho appointment.
I understand your frustration as well though.
It depends in tolerance but 150 mg at once can make you sick, especially when you first start taking it as well as slow your breathing. I had a prescription for it for just over two years and it will make you nauseous and you may vomit if you just started taking it. The withdrawals are also worse than vicodin, etc in my opinion.
i have bad tendonitis in both legs i have been on tremadol for a couple of weeks now would it be ok if i took 2 every 4 hours? for pain and not every 6 hours? and can i can it up to fix times a day?
right now i take 2 every 6 hours. i was thinking going up to 3 every 6 hours but im a scared of the side effects because im being treated for seizuers already with 550mgs of keppra. p
I'm suppose to take 50mg of tramadol three times daily as needed for pain in my hands, will I be ok. Kind of scared to after reading everyone's responses.
What is the pain in your hands and what is it caused by?
I've been taking tramadol for about 4 years now for RLS and nerve pain. I have, by accident, taken 200MG in one dose in the morning. As a routine, to get ahead of it, I take 2 50MG tabs in the morning. But I know on at least one morning, I forgot I had taken them and took them again.
As Someone else had posted some time ago, tramadol makes me alert, oddly enough. I was a bit more talkative then usual that morning. Since it's taken ahead of the pain and not taking I leaves me usually in pain until the next morning, I do okay taking 1 50MG when I am not sure.
I usually take 5 for the day. 2 in the AM, 2 around noon and 1-2 when I retire for the day. If I miss the AM or noon dose, I pay by losing much sleep which aggravates the condition. Only catch up is more rest and take normal dose. Ibuprofen or Advil make good companions with the Tramadol.
I have taken Tramadol for chronic pain over much of the past several years. The Max. recommended daily intake is 400 mg, according to Rx insert. In our quest for pain relief, we must be diligently protecting our liver, kidneys, heart, etc. Just my opinion, but you're going to be ok with 3. Just get back on track !!! Are you going to have surgery to repair rotator cuff?
Just from my personal experience I was given Tramadol to help my spinal arthritis and my doctor was not aware of the side effects between Prozac and Tramadol and it caused me to have a seizure if you look in any medical book it will say that is one of the most common reactions so I would talk to your doctor I'm not sure what the difference is between Prozac and what you're on just be careful
Hello: chaoskaye. I am on the same medication at 400 mg per day . If you were to ask ten doctors you'll get a different answer on the threshold as far as the highest dose possible. To keep it safe I would not exceed 400mg. I am very tolerant to opioids so I myself take 550 to 600 mg per day. One additional 50 mg pill certainly could not harm you it may cause some insomnia but very little risk of any respiratory depression which physicians are deeply concerned with. Remember it's a schedule 4 drug and it is a synthetic opioid so I feel you're very safe with this drug. As a behavioral scientist I believe you can self direct your care to some degree but always consult your physician if you feel inclined to do so have a great day. I apologize one last thing to consider there is a concern about seizures with this drug going over that 4 to 600 mg dosage. Some individuals choose to take a low dose of a benzodiazepine like Valium in order to raise their seizure threshold.

Valbb; Thank you so much for putting your post here giving people hope and some Positive feelings about this and just how you take it and with what. Even the doctors are at a loss when it comes to pain control. But as you notice so many people are all negative on some things and that is all people hear, It is very important to have people see some good post and that there is hope. It's like a breath of fresh air. The last thing I want to see is these people that put so much negative stuff about a medication etc. Because all of our systems are different. And things work differently for everyone. glad your pretty much under control and its a good combination of meds you're taking really. Also, as you stated even when things are going well we have a day or week here and there that are not as good a lot of thing cause this. very nice post. Stay positive and I hope you continue to feel okay.
Sorry but these old posts throw me and sometimes I can't even figure out who I'm talking to when one pops up on my screen from a year or more ago it gets confusing at times But anything positive is great to have others see. Have a great day.
Thank you Chuck.
In the depths of despair I had depression caused by the constant pain, having to leave work and my life being turned upside down.
But 9 years later, I am significantly better and mobile. The pain is manageable with this combination and to look at me, you'd think nothing is wrong but mind over matter helps to make it through the day, till that time I can lay horizontal and take my meds lol
It's important to try various combinations until you find what works best for you.
Research, be informed and manage your gp as they don't know it all!
I appreciate the warm response.
Hope that you're having a great day :-)
Valbb; Yes you sure have that right you have to have an open mind and pretty much a lot of patience before they find what helps each person. There is no one answer what works for one does not always work for another. And use lots of mind power to stay positive and have a good doctor willing to work with you. But if you don't go through all of this you would be really messed up. Glad it's working out for you. Keep it up Chuck1957 and thanks a lot.
Although Q asked couple years ago, I'm sure others will come across it, just like I did, so wanted to add my tuppence worth.
I've had severe back pain caused by bulging discs for several years, as well as spinal degeneration and arthritis in all major joints.
Anyway, I take 100mg of tramadol twice per day, along with pregabalin and Duloxetine This combination has given me my life back, after spending 6 months in bed and taking 2 hours to roll over just to to go to the loo!
On the odd occasion, when pain is severe, I might take 3 tramadol together. Usually at night as helps restless legs too. I've had no ill effects from doing so. However, I'm conscious not to do this too often.
I've been told by many that tramadol is more effective when taken together with paracetamol, so maybe you could try this combination?
You really need to follow your doctors recommended dose. This is a very strong pain killer that can have side effects. I would be asking your doctor if you can take Panadol Osteo with tramadol. I find this combination gives me good pain relief
This is in response to a Q? asked over 2 yrs. ahí, but was looking to see what the highest dise of Tramadol you can take in one day. I was prescriben 50mg 3x a Day.
Did nothing for my pain. Started takeing 3 tabs 2x a day & nothing. Today I took 3 3 times. Just took the last 3, so Ill see if it world.
Medications efecto people veré differently.
Hi, you really need to be careful taking doses that high. The maximum recommended dose is 100mg in a 4 hour period. The maximum recommended daily dose is 400mg. Ask your doctor if they are happy for you to take this amount, 100mg 4 times per day. When taken at regular periods Tramadol is more effective
Delayne; please listen to my friend Delia she knows and I agree with her. OUR SYSTEMS are all different and a toxic level can just pop us so far you have been lucky but you should not be taking more than prescribed it sounds like you just took the last pill or are very low. Many people you have to taper down off of this. You can have terrible withdrawals from this medication What you should do if your not getting relief go back to the doctor and tell them that this is doing no good. not take more!!! Some people do well on the timed release but taking the standard and just adding more and more your playing with fire please call your doctor,These are worse getting off of then Norco or many opium medications for many people. good luck
I have a urological condition that I take Tramadol for. As mentioned it will affect people differently - my father cannot handle 100mg SR without feeling dizzy. I have consulted a pain neuro surgeon, and he said that a maximum if required, once off, could even be around 800mg a day.
I have had 600mg on 2 occasisions in the last 2 years and boy does it make me dizzy and spaced out - it worked with the pain though. I had no serious side effects.
I am now trying to get off it and I am now having the withdrawal symptoms and am not enjoying it!!! :(
Hi njclifford, i am shocked that you were told that you can take up to 800mg per day!! The maximum recommended dose for slow release Tramadol is 300mg per day, and immediate release 400mg per day. That is really dangerous information to give to you. Please seek advice from a different source... this physician needs to be educated
No way would I take that dose I would listen to MY friend Deili she is so right with this one and a dose like that could do more harm than good not to mention to try and get off of it. were it me I would talk with another doctor and let the doctor know that this medication is just not woking.Chuck1957, when a medication does not work at the normal dose increasing the dose, can be very harmful Be very careful, please. Don't take that high of dose again
I have taken as much 250mg in an hour ,that's (5) 50mg tablets which I crush and dissolve in water and drink. Been doing this for about 3 years now but not that dosage all the time because I run out of pills.
I want folks opinion on the usage of tramadol in place of Norco I am at 8 a day with tablets of 10 /325 or 80 a day for years. How does tramadol compare to Norco for effectiveness in back pain and neuropathy and any side effects that could impair my daily activities.
I have severe neuropathy and take a combination of Tramadol and Gabapentin every 8 hours. Norco and other opioids are less effective than Tramadol for neuropathy, according to multiple studies. You can easily find the studies if you Google ‘treatment for neuropathy’. The first line treatment with the best effectiveness is Gabapentin or Lyrica (pregabalin) the second line of treatment is Tramadol, and the last line is opioids. I find the combination of Gabapentin and Tramadol works better than a few years ago when they just had me on opioids. I hope this helps a bit, good luck and hugs ❤️
You should be fine. I was prescribed 100mg of tramadol every 6 hours, However, be very very careful about interactions with this drug and antidepressants, benzo's, and alcohol. My wife's sister just died and the cause was likely a seizure due to mixing the three. I don't know the type of antidepressant or benzo, but they said there were more and more issues coming to light with tramadol as people got used to taking them and some doctors not really explaining the danger and considering it just a super Tylenol or Motrin..
Oh my goodness. She had Serotonin Syndrome, didn't she? My Doc was VERY hesitant to allow me to be on Ultram for this reason (b/c of the other meds I take). I'm so sorry!
Very well could have been the tramadol.i am on 100mgs twice a day. I tried to stop even with tapering down but felt so bad I had to go back on!, the ex were worse than the ke knee pain!I have chronic knee pain from 2 knee replacements in the same knee . I get little or no relief from the Tramadol. My
GP refuse to prescribe any narcotics. I am at the end of my pain rope. Any suggestions. Pain clinics want to inject some kind of apricot oil in there. I live in the East valley of the Phoenix area.
Tell them that you demand pain relief and you want buprenorphine. If they haven't been through the training to prescribe it FOR PAIN, you want them to refer you to A PAIN MANAGEMENT DOCTOR who has. NOT a doctor specializing in detox - because buprenorphine is a main ingredient in a drug called Suboxone, which is mixed with Narcan, the drug that makes someone in overdose come out of it. It helps someone with heroin addiction slowly taper down from the heroin until they no longer need it.
You can be prescribed the pure form of buprenorphine without the Suboxone in a sublingual tablet - but even if you ARE prescribed Suboxone, it is not because you are a drug addict or are trying to withdraw from heroin LOL They will put on the prescription label "for pain." They (they being the pain management community) have come to realize that buprenorphine is not an opiate like percocet or fentanyl - which they DON'T want patients being on anymore - yet it is a safe and EFFECTIVE method of PAIN RELIEF... if you can just get over taking something that is also used for something else that might embarrass you. My pharmacist doesn't even give me a second glance because my bottle says "for pain," and besides, the folks who take it for heroin get it not from a pharmacist but from people in a clinic. A pharmacist will dispense it to someone who is being prescribed it for pain. It is rocking the pain management world, and I was able to come down off of MAJOR opiates (and trust me, after years and years, I was needing more and more to control my pain). Now I take buprenorphine, and I have been staying at the same level and finding I need less and less over time. I wouldn't be surprised if my pain signals are actually shutting down and I would need minimal to no pain management in five years from now. I never thought it would be like this, so please consider at least looking into it. It completely changes my life, so I'm a huge advocate of it. DO NOT DO NOT DO NOT get the Butrans patch. That's Buprenorphine in a time-released patch. IT DOESN'T WORK WELL. Suboxone works and Buprenorphine sublingual works. I prefer to be on the sublingual pills over the Suboxone only because, if I were ever to need to take opiates because of an injury or surgery, the Narcan in the Suboxone would keep the opiates from working! And that's a good reason to ask for the pill!
Go to a Pain mangement doctor if ur primary doctor won't prescribe the right medication 2 take away the pain. Ask ur primary doctor 4 a referral if message. They will assess ur pain levels n prescribe the good stuff like oxycodine ect.
Hi, you shouldn't take more than 100mg in a 4 hour period, and a maximum of 400mg per day. If you have taken 3 tablets at the same time as a one off you will be fine. You may experience some mild 'hangover' like symptoms. It won't do you a lot of damage. Reading through your notes, you say you have been given the green light to double your dose now??? Hopefully this will be much more effective for your pain
Yes, you will be so don't worry.
I took 3 tramadol last Friday cause i was in pain. And I had a seizure at my job. 30min after taking tramadol. I woke up standing up and looked at my co workers and they were asking me if i was OK. That I was on the floor shaking real bad. Bit my tongue extra hard still hurts and its been 4days already. So yes it is very dangerous taking 3 tramadol of 50mg at the same time.
Tramadol can induce seizures. This isn't a drug to mess with at all. 100mg q6h max... and if your on an antidepressant be even more careful.
