Can you cut the pill in half?

I am taking 200 mg per day of Toprol-xl. Can I cut the pill in half to take 100mg only, would there be any side effects?

Is it safe to take Indomethacin that is past it's expiration or discard date? Or, can it be given to a free clinic to be disbursed there to the needy? Are there any harmful side effects? Thank you
