My Mirena has been out for over 9 months, & not 1 period. I have had blood work done for pregnancy, my thyroid, & other possible issues. We have had scans done & an internal ultrasound to ensure its not cancer, all came back fine. Could this have been caused by the mirena? I have looked for similiar situations, but most people eventually start after 3-4 months, but I have seen nothing like extending out to over 9 months.
We had it removed so we could try to have another baby, & now Im literally infertile because Im not menstrating. Im 27 years old, with two children that I am very thankful for, but I always knew I wanted another eventually whivh is why I had the Mirena put in so I could take it out & get pregnant when we felt the time was right. I had my first one put in Nov 2008, removed & replaced Nov 2013, & then the new one removed Feb 2014. Since then, nothing. We dont know what to do, & my doctor is completely stumped. If anyone has had a similiar situation please help, we thought this was suppose to be a happy time trying to get pregnant & adding to our family, thank you!
Still no period after 9 months of having Mirena removed?

Sorry this has not been answered earlier.Hopefully you have had your period by now and all is well. Infertility has been reported with the Mirena but this is in relation to either a pelvic inflammatory disease or an ectopic pregnancy. Is it possible that you have experienced premature menopause - loss of normal function of your ovaries before age 40? Women with premature menopause stop having periods and can't become pregnant.
No to everything you e suggested. I've had all of those tests run and no I'm not experiencing premature me a pause or loss of normal function of the ovaries or anything else..
All the tests came back normal and the obgyn doesn't have answer.
I still have no period and the mirena has been out now for almost 3 years.
I have accepted that I won't have any more children, that's ok. But I am angry that no one ever mentioned these side effects of the mirena!! I was never given a pamphlet or any information or even told verbally by the doctor.
Hi... maybe this will encourage you... I had my iud removed one yeAR and had no cycle and was ready to try and have another... my docs could not explain it and I was angry that no one had ever mentioned this was possible... we decided with our doc to try drugs to stimulate a cycle and if that didn't work they would try a drug that would cause ovulation... not sure if you've tried this... we decided to wait a few months and out if no where... my cycle just started... I am scared that this is a fluke so if it cone next month I will be more relieved... there are drugs that can help you to conceive... have u already tried these things?
I had my first son when I was 19. Got the Mirena and installed?( LOL) immediately and kept it in for 5 years. Like a year later I had my second son. After that I had one of the iuds I'm not sure which one for 6 years 6 years before removing it only to have another brand inserted. When this happened it was very painful and I asked the doctor why it was so much more painful than I remembered and she said that since I hadn't had sex that was why but that wasn't the type of pain it was. Last year I had the flu which turned out not to be the flu but a UTI since then I've been on 10 different antibiotics that with the UTI only gone for a month to 3 months at best I removed the IUD hoping that that might have been the culprit but still getting sick . Sometimes I feel the flu symptoms and go in only to be told that I don't have a UTI but I feel the way I felt with prior UTIs and I noticed whatever this flu symptom is goes away when I take antibiotics.
Anyways haven't had a period since I had the IUD removed over 6 months ago. I also have severe issues with constipation and have had them for years and recently been getting severe edema on my legs and ankles. My feet fall asleep and cramp easily and I've even begin to get veins on my ankles and feet. I feel like water is not circulating through my body properly cuz even when I do drink a lot of water there's not a change at all. Didn't mean to put all the extra symptoms just putting them in case it rings a bell or put something together for somebody cuz I am so confused as to what's going on with my health I am Young only 35 , always healthy ,but recent years I'm sicker than most of my elderly family members and I'm tired of being sick. Also just remembered another symptom that's plaguing me is my memory. I've always had an excellent vocabulary and continue to try to strengthen my vocabulary but I find myself trying to remember simple words that I use on the day-to-day basis literally to not recall them until I describe them in the thesaurus on the computer.
Not sure how long it has been since this was posted - new to this site - however, I got the Mirena IUD right after my daughter was born and kept it for the full length of effectiveness - my period stopped shortly after getting my IUD and I remained period-free for 10 years. During that time my life was in transition after my daughter's father and I split up when she was 2. I didn't really date for several years and I didn't have sex either. There was a short 2 year relationship when she was about 4 and then I didn't have sex with anyone for almost 7 years. Once she was a little older, I started taking some time to go out and catch up with old friends and I started meeting new people - once I had sex no more than 2 times, my period returned and has been the most regular ever. I am in a beautiful relationship now but I'm also 36 years old and neither of us is ready for another child.
We each have a daughter - they are a year apart in age - so I am thinking it is time to get another IUD, but I'm not sure if anyone has had more complications getting it at my age.
I was lucky because I did not have any noticeable side effects from Mirena. The pill used to make me mean - almost exactly 30-45 minutes after taking my pill I would be agitated like when I have PMS. So I had to stop the pill and the IUD was the best birth control I have used.
I was told that I probably wasn't able to get pregnant and was considered menopausal because I did not have a single period for a decade - not even spotting. It was the best 10 years.
I had my iud (Kyleena) removed in may and still no period. I felt like I was pregnant but tests say no.
I had a similar experience and my inclination is that the IUD has caused uterine scarring. I hope that you have better luck with getting pregnant but the more I read the more often I see that women are infertile after removing the IUD.
I am in the same situation. After having successfully pregnant easily and getting blessed with for my four daughters. So I needed to pause and the doctor advised me to use Marina. I put Marina in in 2016 and since I didn’t feel comfortable with it , I decided to take it of in 2018 but the strap was lost and I took one year in this health system to get removed in 2019. I got my period right away but short and irregular. I would miss it for three months and when it came very short and only spotting. Since February 2021 I have no period . Since we were trying to conceive ,we consulted a specialist and I got all tests and ultrasound done. I would be able to see the fertility specialist this September and I will post what could happen after.
I am 40 now and I regret using Marina.
I'm 43 and I had my mirena out over 6 months ago. It was apparently stuck to my uterus and it was a very painful process to remove it. Anyway the dr was sure I would have some bleeding from the procedure but I have had no bleeding at all since I had my first iud inserted in 2003. I was tested for hormone levels and I'm not in menopause. My common sense tells me that somehow the iud caused scarring of my uterus. Just a thought that's a reasonable idea as I was an l and d RN for many years.
Hi, I made an account just to post an answer to this question. I was very sad by all the women going through problems after IUD removal and decided add my two cents and hopefully it will help!
Im 32 years old and have two children. I had the Skyla IUD for almost two years before finally getting it removed. I had been suffering from horrible side effects like pain in joints and bones, mood swings, premature wrinkles, dry skin, and even loss of muscle mass on my legs! But I stuck with it because I wasn't ready to get pregnant again. I am now trying to induce my period to come because I still feel as if the hormones have not left my body.
Please don't give up and try some natural methods of inducing a period: I am taking about 4 cups a day of apple cider vinegar water, and 3000mg of vitamin C daily(ascorbic acid). Try a 7 day liver detox as well, the liver harbors toxins. And if the liver is not cleansed it will be clogged up by hormones. Im very confident this will work. Someone else mentioned vitex and evening primrose oil. I will try these as well. Bottom line, I will never again play God and disrupt the natural cycle of my body with these horrible hormonal devices! Please don't get them. Use barrier methods, calendar method, female condoms, or other non hormonal options instead.
Update: I took my skyla out on Feb 19 2021. I found o I was pregnant April 1 2022. So it turns out this did not affect my fertility at all. I got pregnant immidietly after removing it which I thought was impossible.
I’m 34 and had my Mirena removed almost 2 years ago and still haven’t had a cycle. I’m going to see a specialist about this as it is not normal. I was not told that it could possibly cause infertility when I first got it and went against my gut feeling and didn’t have it removed after the first 5 years.
i had the Mirena placed in 2012 and removed in 2015. I did not have my period while I was on it and have not seen it since. My doctors ran tests and could not find answers. This is very sad and feel sad for those that are trying to have more children. Although I have 3 children I am still angry that this is allowed to continue happening to other women. I still don’t know what happened and no one seems to either?
It is most likely a hormonal imbalance. See my comment on the last answer about the combination I used to get back to normal after years on artificial hormonal birth control. Worth a try, as long as you're not using any hormonal birth control.
I am 24 years old. My mom made me get the mirena when I was 15. This was not my idea. But when I took it out at 19 years old I hadn’t had a period in over 2 years after removal. Then I got my period but now I only get it twice a year. Then I ended up developing ovarian cysts. Which I have 20+ cysts on each ovary. And no doctor will help me. They say they can’t do anything for me. So I’m in pain a lot and I’m infertile for 98% of the year and no one will do anything for me.
Do some looking into natural support. I found vitex got my hormones sorted out after years on the Depo Provera injection. Took a few months. I take a high dose, once per day. As I say, have a look into it. You can ge it on line or at health stores. I use that alongside Vitamin B6, & high dose Evening Primrose Oil, & the 3 together keep my hormones well balanced, so I get regular periods & ovulation, & my PMS to a minimum.
You can't use vitex if you're using any hormonal contraception. Other than that it could be worth a try.
Hi All, hopefully some of you are still looking at this thread.
I too had the Mirena removed back in May 2020 (I actually did it myself as could not get to see anyone due to Lockdown). Had minor cramping for a few days, BUT like most of you not a single drop of blood. No period since.
It seems a common theme for a lot of us. I have had countless bloodtests which all come back normal.
I am 43 and would love another baby with my new(ish) partner. Nothing is happening. I have no idea if I am ovulating either. So lovely to hear the few success stories on here. I have awaiting a phone call from a fertility clinic to see if I am actually still ovulating.
Would be great to hear of other encounters. I am based in the UK and am appalled that so many of us are going through this ordeal with no support or answers.
Hi, I am in the same situation, I would like to know what happen at the end? Do you have your period back?
Thanks you for sharing!
I had was on my second mirena. When my first Mirena I really didn't have. Low in my size on one I did because my daughter's has started her menstrual cycle but September 2017 was my very last. My Mirena was to come out May 3rd of 2018 I didn't get OB/GYN till June and was lost didn't make it to the ultrasound. I know it's still there because it was it was uncomfortable and it hurt during intercourse. I asked the nurse if I was able to feel it or my husband feel it if we can pull it out on her own since it was expired she said yes but if it hurts at all or like a tugging feeling to stop and come back to the doctor wait he took it out on June of 18 and to this day I still not menstrual cycle. So September will be three years since I've had menstrual cycle.
I got mine back using Vitex. You might want to research it. It can take a few months of use to see a difference. Sometimes sooner.
You can't use it if you're using hormonal birth control, though.
Oh my goodness! I thought it was only me. I had the Mirena removed in October 2019 and not one smidgen of blood. If I remember correctly, I may have had some bleeding after getting the IUD in 2018. I am so lost, just turned 40 and I have everything established except for a baby. Now its too late the Mirena has ruined my life, all the hormone testing and ultrasounds are normal. My GYN is FOS he acts as if I'm the only case he's ever heard about, BS.. I thank you ladies for being on this platform and being honest. I've searched everywhere and I'm sure there are way more women out there but their either ashamed, scared or just don't know where to turn for support.. My fiance has been upset, he was against me getting the IUD so now I'm not sure where that leaves us. Welp if anyone has some tips or remedies to bring back the menstrual I used to hate but am now desperately seeking, please message me details.

Try vitex. I recommended it after long term artificial hormones are leaving people unable to conceive or want regular periods again. It helped me & has helped many other women. Have look into it. You can get it in health stores or online. It may take anywhere from weeks to months.
You can't use it with hormonal birth control.
