I awaken in the middle of the night with my tongue glued to the roof of my mouth. I know how incredibly disgusting that sounds, but it feels as if I've eaten school glue! (My breath must be really sweet and probably smells of roses)
This is not a huge problem, just annoying, and the benefits of neurontin far outweigh the glued tongue situation.
Thanks,

hi tilly,I was on gabapentin a couple of years back but it didn't do much for me. I do read lots of posts from lots people who take it and get amazing relife. dry mouth is a fair trade off if its working for you. It was turning my hands and feet a tiny bit yellow.I guess that was from those 3 months of before I went to my doctor thinking I would just take every OTC pain med So I talked with my doctor and we came up with 800mg of ibuprofen 3x a day. Now I only use it for them really bad days.but if you keep water next to your bed just use enough to wet your tongue dont over do it. water before bedtime is actually bad for your teeth.my dentist told me that it washes of a coating of enamel your gums produse during sleep. who knew... pete
Thank you Pete, GREAT info! "Who knew" is right, I'd no idea about water and tooth enamel. I will just wet my mouth and not guzzle the water.
Than you again,
Tills
Its hard to tell what does it, since everything I'm on has it for a side effect. I find it extremely annoying. I carry water everywhere I go. But like you said, the benefit outweighs the side effects.
kaismama, you just made me think of another med that dries out the mouth that I take, xanax at night, no wonder my tongue feels glued to the top of my mouth. I'm sorry to learn you are on a bunch that dry out your mouth.
Biotene works pretty well, the toothpaste and mouthwash, IF you can get past the taste. Pattishan posted about Biotene a long time ago, so I cannot take credit for that.
Thank you again, and best wishes to you,

Hi Philly, Yeppers with the dry mouth issue... the gin martinis sound good right about now ! There really isn't a whole lot you can do about it except what the girls have already listed above. I chew a lot of gum during the day,sip seltzer with lemon { that water crap got old 4 years ago} brush and gargle good before I attempt sleep and then... take the bottle of water to bed. I've been on Gabapentin/Neurontin for a little over 4 years and it definately is one of the side effects. I have to laugh, you have given away your age with the eating school glue comment but, the description is right on the money !
Be well, Ohmyachinashe
Hi ohmyachinashe, i had to laugh at your post, the bit about giving away my age. Nearing 45 or 50 are we? Don't answer that!!

Tilly/Philly... Mum's the word !
Hi, i checked the side effects of Neurontin and Gabapentin and they both can cause dry mouth, it is listed as a common side effect unfortunately. I don't really know what to suggest about the 'glued tongue' during the night? I get dry mouth from some of my medications also and always keep a drink next to my bed for during the night and when i wake. Do you suffer from this much during the day? If so, simple lozenges are handy to keep in your bag, sucking them will increase the saliva production in your mouth.
Thank you Delila, (love your name) I keep water with me at all times, and gin martinis of course. I don't suffer from this during the day, because I'm always drinking either water or green tea. This really isn't a big deal, just annoying. I shall get some lozenges, good idea.
Thank you much,

Hi Tilly :)
I have never taken neurontin or gabapentin but I was gonna ask my neurologist about it when I go next time. I know for me any kind of pain meds does that to me. I never go anywhere without a water bottle, sometimes two in my purse! The dry mouth kills me! I don't know what causes it but it's probably an indicator that the body is dehydrated from the meds so I try to put back what it needs. I'm sorry I can't be of more help but I wanted to empathize with you & your dry mouth :( I hope someone can give you some advice :) I did read that Biotene mouth rinse helps tremendously with dry mouth so I think I will try that now that you got me thinking! Hugs... Jewels
Hi Jewels, thank you for your kind response. I do have all the Biotene products at my disposal, but have you ever tried the stuff? There is some shmear you put in your mouth that is horrible! But it does help a bit, the toothpaste and mouthwash help as well.
I also carry water bottles or straight gin martini's in my purse (ok, I was just kidding about the martini's) and that does help alleviate it, but at night, my dry mouth actually awakens me. I have water by my bed, but I'm beyond just a sip of water by then. I must get up brush teeth again, and then I'm awake, grrrrrrrrrrr!
Thank you for your kind answer SweeterThanRain!

I have exactly the same problem, but then with a stuffy nose - and breathing through my mouth makes it awful, waking me up several times at night. I've tried all of the above, (BTW Biotene does seem to help a little, but the stuff is nasty, did you know one of the ingredients is milk?) I wish there was a better way, right? They have a medication for dry eye syndrome, why not dry mouth?
