How soon can I get my MRI results after the test? Does the radiologist have to read them first or can I get the films the same day as the test?

Our clinic waits until the radiologist and my physician discuss them. Then I have an appt. with my doc within a couple of days and we review together. They send an email on the initial result, and I can look up the radiologist report online.
My copies are held electronically and I can get them within a couple hours sent via email. My doc simply has to be available to release them. Printed copies require going to the department and picking them up. Once the doctor okays them.
Good thing you don't live in Illinois. That would never happen here! You have to physically go get the copy & report. Can you believe in this day & age, not one doctor in this area will email to a patient or medical info or anything? They may call you with results, but never email. If you want a copy I think it still comes by pony express... Mary
All hospitals, clinics, pharmacies, etc have to be on an electronic system by 2014 ( i think, will have to check date) per federal law. It's coming. Hold tight. We just happen to have one of the biggest developers of this software here. And their system is everywhere. It is really amazing. Includes app for the iPhones, etc. Been here seven years that I know about.
The hospital is online with the doctors, but they won't let the patients in on it. Isn't that just amazing? I know of another member that gets the results of her tests as they are printed by the lab to the doctor right on her computer. We live in the dark ages here. You should have seen my records at the hospital when they entered them into the new system. Every med & dose of medications were wrong. Human error of course. Glad I didn't have to stay. They probably would have killed me with the wrong doses, & meds... Mary
Bad, bad, record keepers. Lol. They should be sent to a room and be on a bed for a day. They will get it once they find they are at the mercy of the person reading a wrong chart. Ha-ha. Yes, my paper chart was mixed with someone with the same name but twenty years older than me. Poor woman had a mastectomy. My doctor was surprised that I had such remarkable reconstructive surgery. I mean, really? We had a good laugh. Now all electronic they really cannot make that mistake easily. They will get there soon.
It actually depends on the place that you get your MRI. Where I go, I normally can get at least a written report from the radiologist, normally, they have me wait for a few minuets while my films are read by the Radiologist and most of the time I can either get the films that day or the next day at the latest, but I always get the reading in writing. But some places won't do this, they make you wait until they send them to your doctor. Like I said, it just depends on where you go.
It may depend on the hospital. I know our local hospital sends them via computer to the on call radiologist and get a quick reading. I doubt it will be in writting that day, but it would be known if something was wrong.
Hi skeeter. Usually they like to have the radiologist read them first so a report can be generated to go with your films or now CD of your MRI. It can take a day or two. You should call the MRI place & ask them. Where I get mine, I let them know when I have it done that I would like to have a copy for my records, & they will give me a day I can pick up the CD with the radiologists report along with it. It's a good idea to have a copy for your own records. Where I have mine done they will give me one ffree copy. If you need a second there is a $10 fee. I keep all of mine in a fireproof lock box for safety...
