I also use the lidocaine 5% ointment for the same reasons also but I found this better tropical prescription medication called Voltaren gel. It's a NSAID gel that helps with arthritis and some of the PN pain. I have severe pain in my hips that wakes me up at night and before I started using this Voltaren gel I was sleeping on Icepacks but they only lasted a few hours before they melted. So I still use the Icepacks and now I use this new gel and I can sleep longer before the Icepacks and the gel wears off. I normally go to bed around 9:00 pm and I would wake up by 2:30 am in severe pain and I would have to take the some pain medications and wait tell it kicks in. Now I can sleep to around 6:00 am and I rub the Voltaren gel on my hips and take my morning medications which includes pain medications and go back to sleep within ten minutes instead of 45 minutes to an hour.
I apply it three to four times a day which helps great arthritis pain in my hips and other areas and the PN pain too. I use to sleep with the lidoderm patches on my hips at night but my insurance stopped covering it so I got the lidocaine ointment instead. I still use it on different areas but I use the Voltaren gel on my hips and other areas that the lidocaine ointment is not as affected. So talk to you doctor about trying out the Voltaren gel too. My mom used the lidocaine ointment at one point for her arthritis but once she tried the Voltaren gel she switched to it and she doesn't use the lidocaine ointment anymore. With the Voltaren gel depending on the area you use either 2 or 4 grams. You have this plastic strip the you apply the gel on that measure out how much you need instead of just applying how ever much you want to use. I take many other prescription medications for my PN and arthritis plus the long list of other serious health issues I take 41 medications.
I use it on my back and for me it helps enough for my pain meds to work. Sometimes the pain is real bad and my pain meds don't help enough so I put this on my back. I think it would help with your knees.
I don't know. Please let us all know after using it. I'd like to know as well!
