Although I'm finding Gabapenten very good for neck pain, I am steadily losing wieght and experiencing low blood sugar symptoms. Is there anybody who is having the same reaction? I am loathed to give it up.

Think gabapentin is lowering my blood sugar not sure
I have the same reaction. My physician took me off of the gabapentin. I have a peripheral neuropathy from a trauma. I need the medicine for the pain but I couldn't handle the way it made me feel. I haven't taken any for eight months now but I still have that reaction although not as severe. All medicines have side effects so we just have to decide if the trade off is worth it.

I had this problem a couple of years ago when I was put on gabapentin / Lyrica for diabetic peripheral neuropathy. I was controlling my blood sugars with oral meds at the time and began having frequent hypoglycemic episodes while out riding my bicycle, which was unusual. Began some medical journal research and found an obscure paper indicating that, in rare instances, gabapentin may cause lowering of blood sugar.
Since then my oral blood sugar medication requirements have dropped significantly.
Hello, KVL. I was on gabapentin and saw my sugars go up. had to increase the NPH insulin I take.
How low are you becoming? Be sure to have sugar, honey, or even Mentos with you at all times. Keep your meter handy as well. If you are falling below 70 on a regular basis, you need to see your endocrinologist ASAP.
If you are not being watched for diabetes you need to see a doctor right away. Weight loss is a real symptom for low sugar and is extremely serious which can lead to coma and death. Karen
Hi. I meant to say, low sugar leads to coma.
i have been on this medication for a month,i have been a diabetic for 20 yrs .my blood sugar has dropped down to 30 at night while iwas sleeping. thank god my dog woke me up.i have figured out that within an hour of taking the medication my blood sugar drops.i now know to eat or drink oj within that hour.
Postmarketing research of gabapentin has shown fluctuation of blood glucose levels. Ask your doctor to evaluate your blood glucose levels for hypoglycemia. He/she might want to adjust your dose of gabapentin, or send you to a dietician to establish a special diet to control the low blood sugar if your glucose is not dropping too severely.

Strange I am having the opposite as a side effect. I was diagnosed last year with 2. My Doctor started treating me with a small dose as my diabetes is caused mainly from my poor diet. I used to have a weekly average of 160-190 and a few weeks back about the time I began gabapentin it is 261-300. Just saying.
john,
The way I read the info in my research, I understood it to mean that the blood glucose levels could fluctuate either up or down. Everyone's body is different and unfortunately, yours went up. I'm just glad the doctor caught it and is treating it. Best of health to you.
Kathy
Thank you.
I am a Type 1 diabetic with other issues as well. I was just put on gabapentin from neuropathy on a couple of toes. It worked great and didn't neet to take 3 100mg pills. Just 1 before bed. However my blood sugar is going through the roof--300+.in the am. I'm pretty much on top of my BS and checked to see if gabapentin is a side effect. Everything I read says no. So, I am perplexed. I will be working on this with my doc, but if anyone has any ideas, please advise
